BPHS Chapter 24 — 11th Lord in Houses 7–9 (Wife, Longevity, Fortune)

Method used throughout: take each word of the verse, pick the house that word belongs to, treat that house as lagna, and see which lord the planet is from there and which house it sits in. The agenda of the 11th lord is gains and fulfilment of desires; the house he occupies gives him his resources.

11th Lord in 7th House (verse 127)

Verse: lābheśe dārabhāvasthe lābho dārakulāt sadā, udāraś ca guṇī kāmī jano bhāryā-vaśānugaḥ

• Gains from the wife's family (dārakula)
• Liberal, a giver (udāra)
• Virtuous (guṇī)
• Full of desires (kāmī)
• "Goes into the control of the wife" (bhāryā-vaśānuga)

Why gains from the wife's family:

• The 11th lord's agenda is to give gains "by hook or crook". He occupies the 7th, so 7th house matters are what he has to work with: wife, her family, external interactions, business.
• The 7th shows the wife and everything that comes through her, just as the 3rd shows the brother and everything that comes through him.
• If something enters your life because of your brother — through his friend, his wife, his in-laws — you do not count "11th from 3rd = brother's friend, so lagna". It came through the brother, so the 3rd house shows it.
• A student asks whether the wife's family should be taken from the 2nd from the 7th. Answer: you can, and the 2nd from the 7th matters when you want to see what is happening to them. But what reaches you through the wife — her family, her friend, her colleague — is the 7th house.
• Said later in the class: the 11th lord in the 7th also means gains in business. It is very good for business.

"From your point of view, in your life, that person's influence is through wife. Gateway is wife."

Why a giver:

• The 11th lord only makes a person get; that alone does not make him a giver.
• The house of giving is the 12th. From the 12th house the planet is the 12th lord in the 8th — a duṣṭhāna lord in another duṣṭhāna, a Viparīta Rāja Yoga with respect to giving.
• He may hesitate at first, because the planet's agenda is to gain money, not spend it. Once the hesitation is overcome he gives big.

Why virtuous (guṇī):

• Guṇī literally means "having guṇas"; it can mean several things. The reading that fits is dharmic.
• From the 9th house of dharma the planet is the 3rd lord in the 11th: one upachaya lord in another upachaya. It shows big growth in dharma.

Why full of desires (kāmī):

• Santhanam translates "sensuous". That is possible, but kāmī means full of desires in general — for success in business, for material prosperity, not only physical pleasure.
• A planet in the 7th has a direct aspect on lagna.
• More important: the 11th lord in the 7th is one Kāma trikoṇa lord in another Kāma trikoṇa. The 7th is the house of desire, the 11th the house of fulfilment of desires. A link between two Kāma trikoṇas raises kāma.
• He has a lot of desires and a good chance of fulfilling them.

Why bhāryā-vaśānuga:

• Literally "one who goes into the control of the wife". It can mean a commanding wife. It can also mean a man who understands his wife's heart and behaves so that she is happy.
• From lagna nothing shows a subservient man. The 11th is the house of friendship; its lord sits in the house of interaction. He is a dexterous handler of people and deals with them suavely, the wife included.
• From the 7th house as lagna the planet is the 5th lord in lagna. The 5th lord of emotional stability and pūrva puṇya in lagna: the wife is happy and stable.
• So the meaning here is not a man commanded by a controlling wife. He keeps the wife happy. He gets his gains; she feels cared for.

11th Lord in 8th House (verse 128)

BPHS results:

• Problems in his works
• Long-lived
• The wife dies first

Why trouble in his works:

• The planet whose agenda is gains and fulfilment sits in the 8th house of tensions, troubles and anxiety.
• There will be breaks; it is not a smooth ride. If the planet is strong everything may work out in the end, but he goes through tension first.

Why long-lived:

• The 11th lord gives gain in some positive matter of the house he occupies: in the 5th, scholarship and children; in the 6th, enemies and obstacles; in the 7th, a good wife, gains through her and in business.
• The 8th is the house of longevity (and of sādhana). He gives gain in longevity.
• From the 8th house as lagna the planet is the 4th lord in lagna — a kendra lord in lagna, a good placement.

Why the wife dies first:

• From the 7th house the planet is the 5th lord of pūrva puṇya, which is good, but he sits in the 2nd, a māraka sthāna. He does not show long life for the wife.
• In general, planets in the 8th are in the āyu sthāna for the native and in a māraka sthāna for the wife. They can show longer life for the native than for the wife.

Further results drawn out in class:

• Lottery or inheritance (a student's question): yes. The 11th lord gives gains; the 8th is inheritance, lottery, sudden gains. A windfall one day is possible.
• Friends: the 11th lord also shows friends. In the 8th it can show problems in friendship, or a man who works hard for his friends — a karma yogi for them, since the 8th is hard work.
• Powerful friends: from the 11th house as lagna the planet is the lagna lord in the 10th. Friends of good status, respected for the work they do in society.
• A student's own chart: his 11th lord is in the 8th, and his 6th lord is in the 8th too, which the teacher calls very well placed. The teacher reads the verse onto him — long-lived, outliving the wife, problems in his work — and adds a tendency for gambling, with a chance of gaining in it one day.

11th Lord in 9th House (verse 129)

BPHS results:

• Fortunate (bhāgyavān)
• Clever, skilful (chatura)
• Truthful (satyavādī)
• Respected by kings (rāja-pūjya)
• Owner of wealth (dhanādhipa)

Why fortunate:

• The lord of gains is in the house of fortune. He gives gains in the matter of fortune.
• A student adds that the planet also aspects the 11th. Answer: only Saturn has a full aspect on the 3rd from himself. Other planets have a quarter aspect there, which is usually ignored.

Why skilful (chatura):

• Skills are seen from the 3rd house, general ability and scholarship from the 5th.
• From the 3rd as lagna the planet is the 9th lord in the 7th, aspecting that lagna. The 3rd house of skill and initiative is fortified.
• From the 5th as lagna the planet is the 7th lord in the 5th, with a half aspect on that lagna.
• Either way a trine lord is in a quadrant or a quadrant lord is in a trine. He has initiative, skill, talent, ability and scholarship.

Why truthful (satyavādī):

• From the 2nd house of speech the planet is the 10th lord in the 8th. Nothing good there; this is not an eloquent man, and he may not express himself well.
• Truth does not come from speaking. It comes from the sense of right and wrong, so look at the 9th house.
• From the 9th as lagna the planet is the 3rd lord in lagna: he takes initiative in the matter of dharma.
• Guṇī in the earlier verse meant a good sense of right and wrong. Here the man goes to some lengths to uphold dharma.
• A student adds, and the teacher agrees: the lord of the 11th of fulfilment is in the 9th of dharma, so he feels fulfilled through following dharma.

"In the matter of dharma, he is not only dharmic, he will take initiative to uphold dharma."

Why respected by kings (rāja-pūjya):

• The 10th is the usual house of honour. From the 10th the planet is the 2nd lord in the 12th.
• From lagna, the 2nd lord in the 12th is bad for wealth — losses, giving away. But the 2nd from the 10th is the resources for his karma, and resources must be put to use for work to get done. From any house, the 2nd lord in the 12th puts that house's resources to use. In the matter of karma that is good: he does big karma, and can be honoured for it.
• More important is the 5th, the house of fame and following — among people in general, not just kings. From the 5th the planet is the 7th lord in the 5th. That house is much stronger here.

Why dhanādhipa:

• From the 2nd house of wealth the planet is the 10th lord in the 8th. Read as a 10th lord in the 8th it shows a checkered career with a sudden rise to a high position at some point. With respect to wealth it is not a good placement.
• So this is not a wealthy man in the classical sense. That is why the verse does not say dhanī; dhanādhipa means owner of some wealth, a man who has money.
• The other house for money is the 11th, the house of gains.
• Meaning here: not a huge bank balance, but money in circulation all the time. He does not have to look for money.

"He doesn't accumulate a lot of money, but he gets what he wants so that he can put it to use."
