BPHS Ch.33 Karkamsa: CRITICAL = Do NOT Default to Navamsa (Each Result Implies Specific Amsha); AK in Aries=Fear; Taurus=Animals+Wealth; Gemini/Virgo=Skin; Cancer=Water Danger; Leo=Wild Animals; Scorpio=Snakes+Mother Trouble; Sagittarius=Fall/Accident; Pisces=Moksha (D20); Benefic/Malefic Aspect = Negates Result
BPHS Ch.33 "Effects of Karkamsa" = results given by the sign occupied by the Atmakaraka (AK) in a divisional chart. CRITICAL PVNR principle: "When Parashara says amsa without specifying which one, he does NOT mean Navamsa by default. He assigned each amsa to a topic — D4 for fortune/property, D10 for career, D20 for spiritual, D30 for punishment, D16 for vehicles. Deduce from the result type." Results by sign: Aries = fear, fearsome circumstances (amplified by malefics); Taurus = happiness/wealth from four-legged animals; Gemini = skin diseases ("Mercury = skin in dhatu system; likely D30"); Cancer = danger from water; Leo = danger from wild animals; Virgo = three results: skin problems + fatness + fire danger ("Mars+Sun as 8L+12L from Virgo = fiery malefics → fire danger"); Libra = businessman/trader + creator of luxury goods ("D10 career"); Scorpio = danger from snakes + trouble from mother/nourishment in infancy ("Moon debilitated in Scorpio = mother-karka damaged = not properly fed as infant"); Sagittarius = fall from height or vehicle accident ("Jupiter = enemy of Venus the vehicle-karka; Sagittarius = Jupiter's sign = bad for vehicles"); Capricorn = gains from ocean (pearls, corals, sea creatures) + gains from birds ("D4 or D2 for wealth"); Aquarius = creates water bodies/liquid technology (Tathaka-kara = maker of ponds); Pisces = Mukti-bhag = fortunate for moksha ("must be D20 Vimshamsa — Parashara's chart for spiritual progress"). Disclaimers: functional benefic aspecting = inauspicious results don't apply; functional malefic aspecting = auspicious results don't apply. If benefics in both Karkamsa and Lagnamsha = person becomes like a king. Upagraha in 12th from AK (well-placed, no malefic aspect) = Kaivalya (moksha or very high spiritual state). Cancer in D20 = Bhakti yoga; Scorpio in D20 = Tantra; Sagittarius in D20 = philosophy/teaching path.
"When Parashara says "amsa" without specifying which one, there is absolutely no basis for assuming Navamsa by default. Navamsa is for marriage and dharma. He specifically assigned each amsa to a topic. When he says AK in Pisces gives moksha — that must be the Vimshamsa. When he says AK in Libra gives a businessman — that must be the Dasamsa. The type of result tells you which chart. This is how you deduce the correct amsa."
— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao
BPHS Ch.33 — Karkamsa Introduction
Chapter 33 title: "Effects of Karkamsa" — the results given by the divisional amsha occupied by the Atmakaraka
Key term: "Karkamsa" = the amsha occupied by the Atmakaraka (AK). When Parashara says "if [AK] is in [sign] amsha, result is…" he is referring to results from that sign in a particular divisional chart.
Critical PVNR principle:
— PVNR"When Parashara says 'amsa' without specifying which one, he does NOT mean Navamsa by default. There is absolutely no basis for that assumption. Navamsa is just for marriage and dharma. He specifically assigned each amsa to a topic — D4 for fortune/property, D10 for career, D20 for spiritual progress, D30 for suffering/punishment, D16 for vehicles, etc. When he doesn't name the amsa, we should deduce it from the type of result given."
This breaks with the mainstream tradition (K.N. Rao and Sanjay Rath both use Navamsa for Karkamsa):
— PVNR"K.N. Rao takes AK in Navamsa, places that sign in the Rasi chart, and sees from there. Sanjay Rath uses Navamsa only (AK's sign in Navamsa = Karkamsa). Both may be partially right. But neither is seeing the full truth. We need research."
Karkamsa by Sign — Results by Atmakaraka's Sign in Respective Amsha
AK in Aries (Mesha Amsha)
Result: Fear; life goes on under slightly fearsome circumstances; anxiety, uncomfortable situations
Amplified by: Malefic planet accompanying AK in that sign
Why: Aries is a Martian sign — Mars = aggressive energy, battles, fear; also Aries is the natural 1st house with the energy of self-assertion
Amsha: Unclear — could be various; Aries in D30 = suffering through aggression/fear
AK in Taurus (Vrishabha Amsha)
Result: Happiness from four-legged animals (horses, cows, cattle); wealth from animals
Why: Taurus = Venus; comfort, pleasure, stability; animals that provide comfort and wealth
Amsha: D4 (Chaturthamsa = property, happiness) or D16 (for vehicles/animals as property)
AK in Gemini (Mithuna Amsha)
Result: Skin diseases possible
Why: Mercury = skin in 7-dhatu system; Gemini is Mercury's sign
Amsha: D30 (Trimshamsa = diseases, punishments from past karma) or D1 Rasi (physical body)
— PVNR"If AK is in Gemini in D30, there is possibility of skin disease. Mercury shows skin in the dhatu system." Additional: In Navamsa (if that's the amsha), AK in Gemini might show: very diplomatic in marital life, knowledgeable communicator in relationships (not skin disease — shows why the amsha matters)
AK in Cancer (Karkata Amsha)
Result: Danger from water / drowning
Why: Cancer = water sign; fear from that which the sign represents
Note: Moon (4th house karka) is debilitated in Scorpio but not specifically Cancer — the sign itself = water = potential danger from water
AK in Leo (Simha Amsha)
Result: Danger from wild animals (lions, tigers)
Why: Leo = lion; the sign shows the nature of the threat
AK in Virgo (Kanya Amsha)
Three results:
- Kandu (skin problems) — Mercury's sign shows skin
- Sthaujya (fatness, stout body) — Virgo is the most earthy sign (earth sign + earth planet = maximum earth element = heavy body)
- Fire danger (Vahni-kana-dvayam = fear from fire)
Why fire danger from Virgo?:
— PVNR"Mars and Sun are both malefics for Virgo (Mars = 12th lord, Sun = 12th from Virgo... actually PVNR says they are 8th and 12th lords from Virgo). Both fiery planets being malefic for that sign = some problem with fire."
AK in Libra (Tula Amsha)
Results:
- Vanik (businessman, trader)
- Skilled in creating clothes, jewelry, decorative articles (Vastradi-nirmana)
Why: Libra = 7th house of natural zodiac = business, dealings, Venus = luxury, aesthetics; Libra = balancing = weighing = trade
Amsha: D10 (Dasamsa = career)
— PVNR"This is talking about career — business. That must be the D10."
AK in Scorpio (Vrishchika Amsha)
Two results:
- Sarpa-tadi = danger from snakes (and by extension insects, scorpions, reptiles)
- Matuh-payodhare pida = problem from mother's breast → not fed properly in infancy; trouble with nourishment in young age
Why mother connection?:
— PVNR"Moon (karka of mother) is debilitated in Scorpio. So the sign where the mother-karka is debilitated shows trouble with mother. Not being fed properly at a young age is one possibility. Not having amicable relations with mother is another."
AK in Sagittarius (Dhanus Amsha)
Result: Danger of fall from height OR fall from vehicle (accident)
Why:
- Sagittarius is the natural 9th house; vehicles (natural 4th = Cancer) → 6th from Cancer = 6th of accidents = Sagittarius
- Venus (karka for vehicles, 4th house) is an enemy of Jupiter (ruler of Sagittarius)
- So Sagittarius = owned by the enemy of the vehicle karka = bad for vehicles
— PVNR"This doesn't mean every person with AK in Sagittarius will have an accident. If Sagittarius is 9th lord in your chart, nothing will happen. The thumb rule is just a guideline."
AK in Capricorn (Makara Amsha)
Results:
- Gains from water animals (crocodiles, fish, sea creatures = Jala-udbhuta jantu)
- Gains from birds (Khe-rastha jantu = sky-dwelling animals)
- Gains from ocean gems: conches (Sankha), pearls (Mukta), corals (Pravala)
- Bhava danishtitha — this definitely happens (gains confirmed)
Why: Capricorn = Makara (crocodile sign), ruled by Saturn → watery + earthy = ocean floor creatures, gemstones from ocean
Amsha: D4 (fortune) or D2 (wealth) for gains; D30 for possible danger from crocodiles
— PVNR"If AK is in Capricorn in D4 (fortune chart), fortune comes from ocean-related things — selling gems, ocean animals, birds."
AK in Aquarius (Kumbha Amsha)
Result: Tathaka-kara = one who makes ponds, lakes, water reservoirs; work relating to water/liquids; creation of liquids
Why: Aquarius = water-bearer + Rahu's sign = philosophy + technology + water = creating water structures, liquid technology, or metaphorically: chemicals, amusement parks with water themes, water treatment, etc.
AK in Pisces (Meena Amsha)
Result: Mukti-bhag = fortunate to get moksha; liberation
Why: Pisces = 12th house of natural zodiac = liberation, dissolution; Jupiter's sign = divine wisdom; natural moksha sign
Amsha: D20 (Vimshamsa = spiritual progress)
— PVNR"This specific line must be Vimshamsa, because he said that is the chart for spiritual progress."
Extension by PVNR: If AK is in other signs in D20, it shows the spiritual path:
- Cancer in D20 → Bhakti yoga (emotional devotion)
- Scorpio in D20 → Tantra, occult practices
- Sagittarius in D20 → philosophical/teaching path, etc.
Disclaimers (Ch.33 Verses 10-11)
Verse 10: "Na shubham shubhadra-sandushteh" — If a functional benefic is aspecting, the inauspicious results do NOT apply
Verse 10b: "Na shukham papa-viksiteh" — If a functional malefic is aspecting, the auspicious results do NOT apply
Verse 11: If in both Karkamsa and Lagnamsha (in the relevant divisional chart), there are benefic planets present AND aspected by benefics → Raja bhava = the person becomes like a king; very successful
Question: Which divisional chart for "king" result?
— PVNR"I haven't really studied charts of kings and powerful people enough to know. Navamsa is not bhagya (Parashara never said that). D4 shows bhagya/fortune. D10 shows career. D5 shows political power. Research needed — test on powerful people's charts."
Upagraha in 12th from AK → Kaivalya (Moksha)
Verse: If an upagraha (Mandi, Gulika, etc.) is placed in own sign / exaltation sign / benefic sign, in the 12th house from Atmakaraka, without any malefic aspecting — the person achieves Kaivalya (moksha or a very high spiritual state)
Meaning of Kaivalya: Comes from "Kevala" = oneness. Could mean:
- Full moksha (merging in Brahman), OR
- Permanent residence in a higher loka (Vaikuntha, Kailasha, etc.) = high-level liberation but not necessarily complete nirvana
— PVNR"Even an upagraha, if well placed, can give moksha. That is why how I read it — even a secondary planet, when well placed, contributes."
Problem: Exaltation/debilitation of upagrahas not clearly defined in available texts. PVNR suggests: maybe use the exaltation/debilitation of their corresponding primary planet (Gulika/Mandi = Saturn, so use Saturn's exaltation signs as reference).
