LMT vs Standard Time & Graha Arudha — Deep Philosophy
Local Mean Time (LMT) vs Standard Time: old Indian records and pre-1900 Western charts often use LMT. How to convert: 1 degree of longitude = 4 minutes of time. The Manchester example chart demonstrates how birth time interpretation changes with LMT vs GMT. Philosophy behind Graha Arudhas: each planet has an Arudha (materialized image in the world). A12 = visible image of spiritual life; A7 = visible image of relationships; A10 = visible image of career. The five aspects for any quality (example: abilities) — lagna, lagna lord, atmakaraka, relevant house lord, relevant house in D9.
"Graha Arudha of a planet shows how that planet's energy is perceived in the world — the material projection of that planet's quality into the world of maya."

Local Mean Time vs. Standard Time — Detailed Clarification
The Confusion
When an old birth record says "local time," it may mean Local Mean Time (LMT), NOT clock time based on the local standard time zone. These are different.
The Mechanics
- Standard time: One time zone for a whole region — calibrated for a specific line of longitude (e.g., Greenwich at 0°)
- Local Mean Time: The time calculated for the exact longitude of the birthplace — different for every town
- Before radio/TV: People calibrated watches using LMT; after radio/TV: standard time became universal
The Manchester Example
- Longitude: 2°13' West of GMT
- Correction: 2.2166° × 4 min/degree = 8.87 min ≈ 9 minutes
- So: 20:16 LMT = 20:25 GMT Standard Time — they are the same chart!
- Small rounding difference: LMT was approximated to 20:16 instead of 20:15:08
Rule in JHora Software
- If time was noted using standard time zone → enter as standard time; do NOT click "Use LMT Instead"
- If time was noted using LMT (old records, old astrologers who converted) → click "Use LMT Instead"
- For modern births: almost always standard time (radio/TV calibrated watches)
- For old charts (pre-1900): likely LMT; may need to ask or test both
Practical Advice
— PVNR"It is not that one is more accurate than the other. It depends on which clock was used. If someone used the radio time to note the birth, that is standard time. If some old-fashioned astrologer already converted it to LMT and gave you that time, use LMT in the software."
The Philosophy Behind Graha Arudhas
The Four Levels of Reality (Deepest Teaching of This Lesson)
In Vedic astrology, every area of life (e.g., marriage) can be examined from four angles:
| Level | Sanskrit | What It Shows | Example for 7th house (marriage) |
|---|---|---|---|
| House (Bhava) | Kalapurusha / Satya | The TRUE inanimate circumstance — the relationship itself, at the level of cosmic truth | The 7th house = the relationship in its cosmic truth |
| House Lord (Bhava Lord) | Narayana / Paramapurusha / Satya | The true divine intelligence driving those matters | 7th lord = the intelligence of Narayana driving the relationship (through your thinking, spouse's thinking, elders' guidance) |
| House Arudha (Bhava Arudha) | Kalapurusha + Maya | Tangible inanimate manifestation of the circumstance — what the world can see of the circumstance | A7 = the visible, worldly image of the marriage/spouse's existence — circumstances of their life |
| Graha Arudha (House-Lord Arudha) | Narayana + Maya | Tangible intelligent manifestation — how the intelligence appears visibly in the world | L7 = image of the wife as an intelligent, thinking, active being in the world |
The Key Distinction: Kalapurusha vs. Narayana's Manifestation
- Kalapurusha (Time-being): Houses — the inanimate cosmic structure. Just exists; has no potency or intelligence by itself.
- Narayana (Paramapurusha): House lords — the avataras of Vishnu who inject intelligence into each house. "Ketu is Meena avatar, Rahu is Varaha avatar..." — these are the movers.
- Shakti (Divine Mother): Creates the Maya — the bounded, finite manifestation that we can see and experience
— PVNR"When you are talking about what kind of job a spouse is doing — lawyer, doctor, engineer — that is a Maya thing. If you want to see the circumstance (what type), look at A7. If you want to see the intelligence (how well they do it, how smart they appear), look at L7."
How to Calculate Graha Arudha
Same method as house Arudha, but starting from the house lord:
Formula: From the house lord, count the number of houses to the house itself. Count the same number from the house → that is the Graha Arudha (L7, L9, etc.)
Example: In Navamsa, 7th lord Sun is in Cancer. 7th house = Leo. Sun to Leo = 1 house. Count 1 from Leo = Virgo → L7 = Virgo (image of wife as intelligent being)
In JHora: Right-click chart → Choose a View → "Standard View with Graha Arudhas" → Shows L1, L2, L3... alongside A1, A2, A3...
The Five Aspects for Any Quality — Example: Abilities
For any quality (abilities, fortune, power, etc.) there are FIVE reference points, each subtly different:
| Reference | Shows |
|---|---|
| 5th from Lagna | True inherent ability of the person |
| A5 (5th house Arudha) | Tangible inanimate manifestation of ability — the trophy, certificate, award on the wall |
| 5th from AL | How the world perceives the ability of the person's inanimate manifestation |
| 5th from Lagna Lord | The ability that Narayana (supreme intelligence) has endowed upon you |
| 5th from L1 (Graha Arudha of LL) | World's perceived image of the intelligence of the person |
— PVNR"Try to understand the distinction. Until you do, stick to the simpler method: just take Lagna, house lords, AL, and house Arudhas. As your understanding deepens through contemplation and tapasya, you will naturally know when to apply which."
Practical Warning
These four levels (house, lord, house arudha, graha arudha) must NOT be used interchangeably to justify any prediction. Each has a specific purpose. If you mix them up, every past event will seem to "fit" but every future prediction will be impossible.
Mantra for clarity: Meditate on Dakshinamurti — "Om Shreem Bhleem Medha Dakshinamurtaye Namah" — to get clarity in distinguishing these subtle concepts.
