Marana Karaka Sthana — Complete Table

For every planet there is one house where it feels impotent and unhappy and does not like to be at all.

Mercury — Why the 7th, and the Houses He Likes

• One of Mercury's 108 names says he keeps going back and forth: direct a few days, retrograde a few days. Unsteady, vacillating.
• For benefics the 6th and 8th are normally not good. Jupiter transiting the 6th or 8th from natal Moon does not give great results.
• Mercury transiting the 6th and 8th from Moon gives very good results. It is in the 7th that he does not.
• 6th house: for a scholar the 6th is argument, not weapons. "For a scholar, argument is life." Virgo, the 6th sign of the natural zodiac, is his own sign, mūlatrikoṇa and exaltation.
• 3rd house: Gemini, the 3rd sign of the natural zodiac, is his own sign. Communication.
• 4th house: by transit and by Ashtakavarga, a very good house for him.
• 8th house: sudden changes and hard work. A natural learner thrives when a new point opens a new area. Mercury in the 8th gives wide learning — something of every subject.

Rahu in the 9th

• "Dharmo rakṣati rakṣitaḥ" — dharma protects the one who follows it. Rahu in the 9th is put in charge of your dharma.
• He will try, but he has to try so hard that everything else he normally does takes a back seat. "That's a good thing, because he forgets the greed, deceit, everything and focuses on dharma."

Ketu Has No Marana Karaka Sthana

"Ketu: which house am I in? I don't care. I just want to give you moksha."

• He does not give the results of the house. He detaches you from them.
• Ketu is single-focused: moksha. He does not give death in any particular house.
• Ketu in the 8th of a person: the 8th is the house of sādhana and tapasya, which is what Ketu wants. Such a person is a great sādhaka.

Saturn in Own Sign in Lagna

Even if Saturn owns the lagna he is still in Marana Karaka Sthana. He gives mixed results, good as well as bad.

Do Rahu and Ketu Take the Nature of Their Sign and Companions?

A student's question. The teacher: not entirely.

• That is more true of Mercury. He has no nature of his own — like transparent paper on a red sheet or a green sheet. With Jupiter he is a great benefic; with Saturn he becomes like Saturn.
• Rahu and Ketu with Sun do not become full of light; they obstruct it. With Moon they do not become happy; they eclipse the mind. Rahu with Jupiter is Guru Chandala Yoga: the intellect is there but covered, as by dark glass.
• With friends (Saturn, Venus) they adapt a little. "They have a motive but not an exact nature" — the motive is to destroy Sun, Moon and Jupiter.
• Where a dasha system gives a node no dasha (Ashtottari has Rahu but not Ketu; another has Ketu but not Rahu; another has neither), the planet with the node, or else the lord of its sign, gives the node's results.

Why the 2nd and 7th

• The houses of longevity are the 3rd and 8th. The 3rd is vitality; the 8th is the length of life.
• The 2nd is the 12th from the 3rd; the 7th is the 12th from the 8th. The 12th is loss, giving up.
• Giving up vitality, giving up longevity — that is death.

Who Is a Maraka (Parashara)

• The 2nd lord and 7th lord, by default.
• Any planet that associates with the 2nd or 7th lord, or occupies or aspects the 2nd or 7th house — malefics above all. If Jupiter and Rahu aspect the 7th, Rahu becomes a maraka; Jupiter does not.
• A lagna lord in the 2nd is not likely to kill.

Disease, Accident, Death

• The 2nd house does not show immediate death. It shows death.
• Disease is seen from the 6th and 8th. 6th lord in the 2nd: death because of disease, and the planet shows which (Jupiter with Venus, probably diabetes; Moon with Mars, a blood or blood-pressure problem).
• Accident is not seen from the 2nd. "Accident doesn't need loss of vitality." A very strong person can still have one. The main house is the 8th; some take the 6th also. For a vehicular accident look at the 6th and 8th.
• A link from these to the 2nd or 7th can make it death.

1930 Financial New Year Chart — Great Depression

This Kartika Shukla Pratipada chart shows how business and the financial market fare for the next year, 1930–31. The March–April chart may show some link, but this one is fine-tuned for finance.

Which Chart — the Hora

For finances the important chart is the Hora (D-2). It shows the financial environment in the country.

Note: the placements below are those of the hora chart in the teacher's software. The site's D-2 follows a different hora scheme and does not show them. In the rasi chart of this moment the lagna is also Pisces, with Sun, Moon and Ketu in the 8th (Libra), Mercury in the 7th and debilitated Mars in the 5th.

Four Planets in Marana Karaka Sthana

• Saturn in lagna: his Marana Karaka Sthana. In finance Saturn is the planet of contraction, not expansion. He is also the lord of the 11th of gains and the 12th.
• Mercury in the 7th: the 7th is the house of business, and its lord is in Marana Karaka Sthana.
• Rahu in the 9th.
• Moon in the 8th.
• Ketu has none. So of the 8 planets that can be in Marana Karaka Sthana, 4 are — "a rare occurrence".
• The lagna itself is beaten down: weak, with Saturn sitting in it.

The 5th House

• The 5th is the house of promotion (the class notes call it the house of emotion). In stock-market matters it is very important.
• It holds a very weak Mars — debilitated.
• 5th lord Moon is in the 8th.
• A student pointed to A8 in the 5th. The teacher: in mundane charts, stay away from ārūḍhas.

Sun and Moon Are Key in Any Chart

• Sun is the soul, Moon the mind. In a country, the ruling class and the masses. Both have to feel good about the financial situation.

"Sun is the bringer of the yoga. Any yoga, Sun is the one who brings it and Moon is the one who sustains it."

• Someone may have a Hamsa Yoga; if Sun and Moon are weak the yoga does not function fully.
• Here Sun and Moon are in the 8th house, and one of them (Sun) is debilitated.
• Ketu is with them. Rahu and Ketu eclipse the luminaries. "Luminaries are not only beaten in the 8th house, but they are being eclipsed by Ketu."
• Ketu in the 8th of a chart about money: people feel "it's all gone" and give up. The whole country gave up.

Verdict

"This year is going to be terrible. Not even bad. It's going to be terrible. Luckily, 2006–2007 is not this terrible. It's just bad."

Vimshottari Variants for Mundane Charts

Compressed Vimshottari

• For people Vimshottari runs 120 years. In a Lunar New Year chart the software compresses it to the length of the lunar year (roughly 354 or 384 days).
• Whether the full span is 120 years or 200, once it is compressed to the year it works. "In my experience, if you compress the Vimshottari dasha to 1 year, it is applicable in this chart."
• By ordinary compressed Vimshottari the Galveston hurricane fell in Moon dasha.
• The published class notes name a second choice for a country's chart, since its longevity is not known: Tithi Ashtottari dasa. This is not on the recording.

Conditional Dashas Come First

Vimshottari is not the only dasha. When a condition applies, use that dasha:

• 10th lord in the 10th → Chaturashiti-sama dasha
• Lagna lord in the 7th, or 7th lord in lagna → Dwisaptati-sama dasha
• Lagna vargottama → Shatabdika dasha

Which Star to Start From

Besides Moon's nakshatra there are variations:

• In natal work these have a limited role — only when that star is much stronger.
• In mundane charts, "feel free to use all those". See which is stronger.

Choosing — the 1900 Chart

1. Count the planets in kendras from each. Moon 3, Utpanna 4, Kshema 1, Adhana 3, Lagna 4.
2. Lagna and Utpanna tie at 4. Next test: Jupiter in a kendra is auspicious. He is in a kendra from both (4th from lagna, 7th from the Utpanna star). Still tied.
3. When not sure: prefer Moon; if not Moon, Lagna; only then "these artificial nakshatras". So Lagna Vimshottari is used.

By Lagna Vimshottari, Rahu dasha was running at the time of the Galveston hurricane. Rahu is a maraka in the Rudramsha, and in the rasi he is the 7th lord sitting with the 8th lord in a watery sign.

Do Nakshatra Dashas Apply to Animals?

• A birth chart of a cat or a dog can be read on the same basic principles. It is the same Kālapuruṣa manifesting in all beings.
• But nakshatra dashas rest on Moon, and Moon is the kāraka of human beings. Another species is governed by another planet, and its full span of life is not 120 years (Varahamihira gives the spans of various species).
• So Vimshottari may not apply. The teacher only throws out thoughts and concludes: stay away from what has no logical basis; for an animal's chart use Tithi Pravesha, and even that is uncertain.
