D-10 Career Analysis — Service vs. Business

Dasamsa lagna: Virgo. Venus and Ketu in lagna; Mercury in the 4th; Moon in Aquarius in the 6th; Rahu in Pisces in the 7th; Mars in the 8th; Jupiter in Taurus in the 9th; Saturn in the 12th.

The native is a pure software man — never hardware. The planets of software are Mercury first and Ketu second. Before that he was a civil engineer, from 1990 to 1996, all of it in Jupiter Dasha.

Jupiter Dasha: A Smooth Career, and Unhappy in It

The native's account: no problems with his bosses, who were good to him — only one bad stretch of three months on a posting abroad. Yet he was not happy doing what he was doing. He did not want to be a civil engineer; he wanted to get into software.

Both halves are in the Dasamsa:

• Jupiter is a Kendra lord (4th and 7th), is the lord of the Arudha Lagna, and sits in the 9th house
• Jupiter is also the Badhaka lord

9th House in D-10 = Protection + Boss

"If you see Jupiter in the 9th house, it's a blessing in any chart, any divisional chart. He will protect you."

• The 9th is the house of the boss and the direction you get from the boss. It is also the house of protection. The two are linked: without a good boss there is no good protection.
• Jupiter in the 9th: career is smooth in his dasha. No being laid off and going two years without a job.

"If there is a big layoff and his name is on the layoff list, at the last minute something will come up. His boss's boss will come: we need that guy for that project, keep that guy. Something will always be saving them."

Badhaka and Inexplicable Desire

• For a dual-sign lagna the Badhakasthana is the 7th house. For Virgo lagna that is Pisces, and Jupiter is the Badhaka lord.
• The 7th is a Kama trikona: desire. With a dual-sign lagna, desire is the problem — an inexplicable worry that comes out of desire.
• The 7th lord gives strong desires in any chart. When the 7th is also the Badhakasthana, those desires lead to heartburn, inexplicable tension, inexplicable unhappiness.

"Badhaka is always some kind of negativity, some worry, some unhappiness, and it is inexplicable. You don't really know why. You don't know why you want to be a software engineer. Why not just be happy as a civil engineer? But you are unhappy, and you want to put your finger on why exactly you are unhappy. You don't really know."

Service or Business — The Thumb Rule

In Dasamsa: strong 6th house = service; strong 7th house = business.

• For the thumb rule, count the planets in each house. (The fuller test has other conditions too.)
• If the count is equal, see whether a planet is exalted, strong or in Moolatrikona
• Here: Moon in the 6th, Rahu in the 7th — one each. Neither is exalted or in Moolatrikona. Both are in inimical signs: Rahu unhappy in Jupiter's house, Moon unhappy in Saturn's. Equally unhappy.
• So by the thumb rule service and business are equally likely. The Artha and Kama trikonas are equally strong.

6th Lord in the 7th

What settles it is which lord sits in the 7th. Rahu owns the 6th (Aquarius) and sits in the 7th.

• 6th lord in the 7th: strong desire, but going off to do one's own business is not advisable. The planet in the house of desire is the planet of working hard.
• Such people should first work for somebody. On the expertise they build there, they can later build some independent venture.
• Inherent entrepreneurship: the 7th lord, the 11th lord or the 3rd lord in the 7th. Had the 3rd lord of enterprise been in the 7th house of desire, he would have been an entrepreneur.
• Moon in the 6th, making the 6th equally strong, supports the same conclusion. Even with an empty 6th, Rahu as 6th lord in the 7th would not make a businessman — only a person with some independence and strong desires.

Conclusion: this is the chart of someone who works for someone, with strong desires. As far as the 7th house goes, the focus is more on the Artha trikona than on the Kama trikona.

Lordship Is Agenda; the House Occupied Is Resources

A student asks: so the lordship matters more than the house the planet is in?

• The house a planet occupies shows what it has access to, and what it is told to do there
• The house a planet owns is its agenda

PVNR's own example: sitting in the hall where the class is held, he uses its table for the projector and its heater. Because he uses them he has some duties too — he has to lock the room when he leaves. Those are the resources and responsibilities of the place he occupies, and there is a limit to them. His agenda lies with what he owns: his own house, and SJC — to advance its cause and teach astrology the way SJC believes in. There the responsibility is much higher.

Applied to Rahu:

• Rahu's agenda is the 6th: overcoming obstacles, working hard
• Put him in the 7th and he has the resources of the house of desire
• He gives desire — but desire about work: more money; not senior engineer but principal engineer; chief architect
• Rahu is also the planet of change, innovation and new things. In the 7th he gives the desire to break into something else.

"If somebody is a civil engineer, he may want to go into software. If somebody is in software, he may want to go into some other new software. All these desires will be given by Rahu, but not really the desire of having a business."

Trikona Analysis of Motivation

Whichever trikona is strong in the Dasamsa shows why the person works.

• An Artha-trikona person who wins $100 million in a lottery still goes out and does something, because he cannot be idle
• In this chart no trikona stands out; several are equally strong. PVNR, joking: "He is a confused person."

Siddhamsa (D-24) — Education Analysis

Siddhamsa lagna: Virgo. Saturn in Taurus in the 9th; Moon, Rahu and Ketu in Gemini in the 10th; Jupiter in Leo in the 12th; Mars in Aries in the 8th; Venus in the 4th; Mercury in the 5th.

Houses for the Levels of Education

• 4th house = basic education
• 9th house = graduation, the bachelor's degree
• 2nd house = post-graduation, the master's degree

Planets for the Fields

• Engineering in general: Mars. Mars is fire, so more mechanical and electrical engineering.
• Construction — civil engineering: Saturn and Ketu. Some add Venus secondarily, because beautiful things are built.
• Software: Mercury, and secondly Ketu

Bachelor's and Master's in Civil Engineering

• Saturn is in the 9th house and has Ketu's argala (Ketu is in the 2nd from him) → a bachelor's in civil engineering is definitely a possibility, among several others
• The 2nd house (Libra) is aspected by Jupiter and Saturn — both by rasi drishti
• Saturn, the planet in the 9th, also associates with the 2nd. That link between the 9th and the 2nd decides it.

"If you see links between 9th and 2nd, usually give preference to that planet, even if another planet is associated with the house. Because usually people tend to do masters in what they studied in bachelors, even though it's not always a certainty."

• He did his post-graduation in 1992–94, in civil engineering again, in Jupiter–Saturn
• Rectification check: with Leo, Libra or even Scorpio as Siddhamsa lagna, civil engineering at both levels does not make sense. The Virgo Siddhamsa is "pretty accurate".

The Gap Before Post-Graduation

The native graduated in May 1990, as Jupiter–Jupiter began, and did not start post-graduation until 1992. His own explanation: Jupiter is in the 12th house of the Siddhamsa.

• PVNR: tough to answer. Vimshottari is not fine-tuned for such things; Narayana Dasha is better, and he will take this example up when that is taught.
• The student's logic is reasonable. Still, Jupiter could have given a master's — but in another area. Jupiter in Leo: management, administration, finance, or law.
• Saturn is the planet giving civil engineering. The event waited until his antardasha came.

Astrology Learning: Why Now?

Siddhamsa is not only formal study. Astrology is seen here too. A student points to the 8th house, where Mars sits in his own sign. PVNR asks for the Bhoga of the running Jupiter–Rahu:

• From Jupiter in Leo, Rahu in Gemini is in the 11th
• 11th from Rahu = Aries = the 8th house from Virgo lagna
• 8th house = occult knowledge → in this antardasha a lot of occult knowledge comes to him

He knew little astrology at the start and within about six months rectified his own chart.
