BPHS Ch.13 Verses 6–11 — Financial Difficulties, Government Loss, Dharmic Wealth (Verse 9) & Vaiseshika Amsa
BPHS Ch.13 verses 6–11. Verse 6: 2nd and 11th lords each in an inimical sign (the teacher argues “ripu bhava” here is not the 6th house) with malefics in or aspecting the 2nd and 11th — no money; he softens it to finances that are not smooth. Verse 7: both lords combust and with malefics — poverty from birth. Verse 8: both lords in the 6th, 8th or 12th, Mars in the 11th and Rahu in the 2nd, all together — wealth lost by the king’s punishment. Verse 9: Jupiter in the 11th, Venus in the 2nd, the 2nd lord with a benefic and benefics in the 12th — money spent on dharmakarya; the teacher explains it through the guṇas (2nd house sattvic, 11th rajasic) and shows how Saturn or Rahu with the 2nd lord colours the attitude to wealth. Verse 10: 2nd lord in own sign or exaltation feeds and helps people; a debilitated 2nd lord shows an unhappy, practical attitude, not selfishness by itself. Verse 11: 2nd lord in Paravatamsa or better (own, exalted or moolatrikona sign in 6 or more of the 10 vargas) with benefics — resources come without effort.
Key principle
You can’t really conclude how wealthy the person is with the 2nd house, but you can conclude how wealthy the person feels, how wealthy the person behaves.
BPHS Dhanabhava — Verses 6–11 (Poverty, Loss, Dharma, Generosity, Vaiseshika Amsa)
Verse 6: 2nd and 11th Lords in Inimical Signs + Malefics on the 2nd and 11th → No Money
"Dhanesho ripubhavastho, labheshas tadgato yadi, dhanayau papayuktau va drishtau, nirdhana eva sah"
- Ripu = enemy. Ripubhavastha has two readings: in an inimical sign (e.g. Sun in a sign of Venus), or in the 6th house.
- Labheshas tadgato = the 11th lord similarly placed.
- Dhanayau = dhana + aya, the 2nd and 11th houses. Papayuktau va drishtau = occupied or aspected by malefics.
Why PVNR takes "inimical sign":
- The 6th alone is too specific. Parashara would have said the dusthanas — 6th, 8th or 12th.
- Had he meant one house, he would have said the two lords are together in it. "The 11th lord also similarly placed" is a roundabout way to say that.
- With inimical signs the two need not be together: each is in a sign inimical to himself. Then "similarly placed" is the logical expression.
Rule: 2nd lord in an inimical sign, 11th lord also in an inimical sign, and malefics occupying or aspecting the 2nd and 11th houses → nirdhana, he has no money.
PVNR tones the result down: that is a little drastic. Say the person has financial problems; finances will not be smooth.
Verse 7: 2nd and 11th Lords Both Combust and with Malefics → Poverty from Birth
"Dhana-labhadhipav astau, papagraha-samanvitau, janma-prabhriti daridryam, bhikshannam labhate narah"
- Astau = combust. Both lords, not just one.
- Papagraha-samanvitau = together with malefics.
→ Poverty since birth; the person gets his food by begging.
Probability:
- For a given lagna the 2nd and 11th lords are two specific planets. Both must be close to the Sun, within the combustion orb — some 7 or 8 degrees, varying from planet to planet.
- PVNR adds that the 2nd and 11th houses must also be occupied or aspected by malefics. The verse as recited names only the two lords; he carries the house condition over from verse 6.
- "It is a rare combination, I mean not very rare, but if you look at all your charts, probably you will not find it."
Verse 8: 2nd and 11th Lords in Dusthanas + Mars in the 11th + Rahu in the 2nd → Wealth Lost to the King
"Shashthe'shtame vyaye va'pi dhana-labhadhipau yadi, labhe kujo dhane rahu, raja-dandad dhanakshayah"
All of these:
- 2nd lord and 11th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th — separately or together. (Verse 1 said this only of the 2nd lord; now it is both.)
- Mars (Kuja) in the 11th house
- Rahu in the 2nd house
→ Raja-dandad dhanakshaya = punished by the king, he loses his money.
- Mars is the fiery planet that burns things; natural malefics deplete. In the house of gains he restricts the gains.
- Rahu shows cheating or shock. In the 2nd, a shock to the wealth. The king taking the money away is the shock given by Rahu.
- 2nd and 11th lords in 6/8/12 you will see in many charts. Mars in the 11th with Rahu in the 2nd is what makes it specific.
"All of them should happen. If just Mars is in 11th house or Rahu is in 2nd house, it does not mean money is lost because of a king."
Verse 9: Jupiter in the 11th + Venus in the 2nd + 2nd Lord with a Benefic + Benefics in the 12th → Wealth Spent on Dharma
"Labhe jive dhane shukre, dhaneshe shubhasamyute, vyaye cha shubhasamyukte, dharmakarye dhanavyayah"
- Jupiter (Jiva) in the 11th house
- Venus (Shukra) in the 2nd house
- 2nd lord with a benefic
- Benefics in the 12th house
→ Dharmakarye dhanavyaya = money is spent on righteous works.
What counts as dharmakarya: any good activity, not only a religious one. Dharma means righteous. Getting many orphans married, founding an orphanage, building a temple, running a place where food is served free to all who come.
Jupiter in the 11th:
- The 11th is gains and the fulfilment of desires. Jupiter is the karaka of this kind of dharmakarya; in the 11th, what he stands for is fulfilled.
- The gains are used for Jupiterian purposes.
Venus in the 2nd:
- A natural benefic in the house of wealth: he does show wealth.
- He is also a rajasic planet: not only accumulating the wealth but disturbing it — some passionate use of it. A benefic, so for something good.
Why rajas is needed:
- To do dharmakarya a person must believe he can change the world. One who thinks like a sannyasi — everything is Brahman, whether that man eats or not, what is the point — has no need to do anything.
- "I want to save the world, let me establish a cancer foundation" — that is rajas.
"I am not saying that rajas is a bad thing, but it is some passion, some energy basically, some dynamism."
Guṇas of the two houses:
- 2nd house — natural energy sattva. Accumulated wealth has stability. If tamas enters, it may be destroyed (Rahu in the 2nd in verse 8).
- 11th house — natural energy rajas. Gains coming in means movement.
- The verse puts a positive rajas (Venus) on the sattvic 2nd, and stabilises the rajasic 11th with sattva (Jupiter). Then the gains are used for a good purpose.
- Because the 11th is rajasic, some — PVNR names his father — take Venus as the labha karaka (11th house), with Jupiter the dhana karaka (2nd house).
Benefics in the 12th: the 12th is expenses; with benefics there, good expenses. If the 9th lord is in the 12th, his agenda is dharma: money is spent, but on a dharmic activity. Which dharmakarya depends on which benefic is there and what he owns — 9th lord Mercury in the 12th may build a big university; Jupiter may build a temple.
2nd lord with a benefic:
- "The lord of the 2nd house shows the application of intelligence towards accumulating wealth." To let wealth go, the 2nd lord needs positive connections. With a malefic, selfishness may be there.
- Saturn: Saturn in the 2nd house may make money hard to accumulate. Saturn with the 2nd lord makes the attitude Saturnine — "let me accumulate more wealth and keep it to myself."
- Rahu with the 2nd lord: the person may even want to cheat someone to accumulate wealth.
- A student asked about Rahu as a functional benefic. Balance the functional and the inherent nature. "Rahu is Rahu after all. But if it is a functional benefic, it is like a bad person who learns to behave well."
- Mercury is dual: a benefic or a malefic by association. Consider the natural nature and the functional nature together.
- General rule: the nature of any planet with the 2nd lord, or aspecting him, shows in how the person accumulates resources. A student whose 2nd lord is with Jupiter was told only that he has a strong Jupiter influence there.
Verse 10: 2nd Lord in Own Sign or Exaltation → Feeds and Helps People
"Svabhochchasthe dhanadhishe jatako janaposhakah, paropakari khyatashcha, vijneyo dvijasattama"
- Svabha = own sign; uchcha = exaltation sign.
- Janaposhaka = nourishes people, gives food and other help.
- Paropakari = helps others; a sharing nature.
- Khyata = well known for these qualities.
Rule: 2nd lord in own sign or exaltation → he or she feeds people, helps people, and is known for it.
- A very common combination; the probability is high. So see who aspects and what the other influences are.
- The verse is about the 2nd lord, not the 2nd house. The 2nd house shows only whether the person accumulates resources. The 2nd lord shows the attitude to accumulating them and to putting them to use. In own sign or exaltation, the person uses his resources wisely.
A student's question — is a debilitated 2nd lord selfish?
"We cannot conclude selfishness, desperation, from debilitation. All we can say is there is some practical attitude."
- Exaltation = idealism; a happy, excited attitude. Debilitation = a practical, unhappy attitude.
- 2nd lord exalted: "let's all enjoy it." The person feels there is too much, feels like a millionaire, and shares whatever little he has. It may not be a lot of money.
"You can't really conclude how wealthy the person is with the 2nd house, but you can conclude how wealthy the person feels, how wealthy the person behaves from the 2nd [lord]."
- "If you feel like a billionaire, you do not mind sharing thousands."
- 2nd lord debilitated: the attitude to one's own resources is a little unhappy, a little disappointed — "how come I never get more money?"
"Even if I have a million dollars and you come and ask me for $100, I calculate if I give that $100, my wealth will come down... I feel that I do not have enough money, even though I have."
- Selfishness is only an extension of that. It needs another affliction — Saturn or Rahu — as the clincher; otherwise you can only guess. Still, a debilitated 2nd lord is not auspicious.
Verse 11: 2nd Lord in Paravatamsa or Better, with Benefics → Wealth Without Effort
"Sthite paravatamshadau dhaneshe shubhasamyute, tadgrihe sarvasampattir vina'yasena jayate"
- PVNR had read paravatamsha adau as "at the beginning of Paravatamsa", which makes no sense: it is a division, with no beginning, middle or end to look at. Santhanam's reading is better: adi = "beginning with" — Paravatamsa and the other good amsas.
- These are the Dasavarga Vaiseshika amsas. PVNR could not recall the full list of names in class ("look at the software or the book"). He first said Paravata starts at 3 vargas; the class corrected him: 6.
- So: the 2nd lord in own sign, exaltation or moolatrikona in 6 or more of the 10 divisional charts.
- Shubhasamyute = with benefic planets, conjoined or perhaps aspected. Asked where this is judged, PVNR said probably just in the rāśi chart.
- Tadgrihe sarvasampattir vina ayasena jayate = in that person's house all kinds of resources come without any effort.
"The Vaiseshika amsa of the second lord is very, very important. That is the lesson of Parashara here."
