BPHS Ch.31 Argala — Foundation (Bolt = Certainty), Sthanas, Grades & Rahu/Ketu Reversal Correction
Argala = Sanskrit for "bolt" or "latch" — makes a house's results drudha (firm, fixed, unavoidable). A house/planet WITH Argala produces results with certainty; without Argala, results are uncertain even if a yoga exists. Critical rule: ONLY planets create Argala, not empty houses or signs. Argala sthanas (from any reference point): 4th house = primary (most important, listed first by Parashara — happiness/sukha/home); 2nd = secondary (resources/speech); 11th = tertiary (gains); 5th = special (purva punya/intelligence). Badha (obstruction) sthanas: 10th obstructs 4th; 12th obstructs 2nd; 3rd obstructs 11th; 9th obstructs 5th. Badha is effective ONLY when badha planets ≥ Argala planets in count; if fewer, ignore obstruction entirely. Argala grades: 1 planet = Kanishta (barely noticeable); 2 planets = Madhyama (noticeable); 3+ planets = Uttama (full, undeniable results). Rahu/Ketu correction: ONLY these two tamograhas (shadow planets) reverse their Argala counting direction — Mars and Saturn do NOT reverse (prior teaching was incorrect). "When counting from Rahu or Ketu, count in the reverse direction; all other planets count forward."
"I want to correct myself — Mars and Saturn do NOT reverse. Only Rahu and Ketu — the shadow planets, the tamograhas — reverse their Argala direction. This is what Parashara actually says."
— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao
Context — PVNR's Return and Methodological Note
- PVNR returns after ~4 weeks; guest teacher (Pt. Sanjay Rath's student) covered Jaimini Upadesa Sutras (Lessons 79–82)
- On this Guru Purnima eve, PVNR begins systematic reading of BPHS — going shloka by shloka as Parashara intended
- "Parashara gave us this gift. We should read it properly, not just pick out convenient verses."
- The standard used: R. Santhanam's translation of BPHS (English edition)
- Prior class teaching on Argala had a small error — corrected in this class
BPHS Chapter 31 — Argala: Conceptual Foundation
What Is Argala?
- Argala = Sanskrit word for "bolt" or "latch" on a door
- When a bolt is applied to a door, it becomes fixed — difficult to open, rigid
- In astrology: Argala makes the results of a house or planet "drudha" (firm, solid, fixed, unavoidable)
- A house/planet WITH Argala produces its results with certainty; without Argala, results are uncertain
Critical Rule: Argala is caused ONLY by planets, NOT by empty signs or houses
- "An empty house cannot cause Argala. Only a planet sitting in a house can cause Argala."
Why Does Argala Matter?
- In ordinary analysis: planets in trines aspecting a house show DESIRE to give results
- Argala adds the element of certainty — the results will definitely manifest
- Argala + strong dasha = certain manifestation
- Argala without supportive dasha = delayed/dormant until dasha arrives
Argala Sthanas — The Houses That Create Argala
From any reference point (house, planet, lagna, or Arudha):
| Argala Sthana | House | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Argala | 4th | Most important (mentioned first by Parashara) |
| Secondary Argala | 2nd | Resources, speech |
| Tertiary Argala | 11th | Gains, elder siblings |
| Special Argala | 5th | Purva punya, intelligence |
"Parashara lists the 4th house first among Argala sthanas — the 4th house Argala is the most powerful. Happiness, home, mother, sukha — when this is strong, everything is colored with that."
Badha Sthanas — Obstruction Houses
Each Argala sthana has a corresponding obstruction (badha) house:
| Argala Sthana | Obstructed By (Badha Sthana) |
|---|---|
| 4th | 12th (counts backward from 4th OR the house that "undoes" 4th) |
| 2nd | 12th (same sign in Rashi Drishti sense; 12th obstructs 2nd) |
| 11th | 3rd |
| 5th | 9th |
(Note: the exact mapping is — obstruction is from the sign that is equidistant on the other side: if 4th Argala, badha is 10th from reference [equidistant]; if 2nd Argala, badha is 12th from reference; if 11th, badha is 3rd; if 5th, badha is 9th)
Badha is effective only when: Badha planets ≥ Argala planets in count. If fewer, ignore the obstruction entirely.
Argala Grades — Strength by Planet Count
| Number of Planets in Argala Sthana | Grade | Practical Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 1 planet | Kanishta (minimal) | Barely noticeable; practically ignore |
| 2 planets | Madhyama (medium) | Noticeable but not overwhelming |
| 3+ planets | Uttama (excellent) | Full, undeniable result |
"With one planet, the Argala is weak. With two, you begin to see it. With three or more — it is Uttama, and the house being influenced will produce excellent, unavoidable results."
Rahu and Ketu — Reversal Rule (PVNR Correction)
The Correct Rule (Corrected in this class)
Only Rahu and Ketu (called Tamograhas = shadow planets) reverse their Argala direction.
- All other planets (Sun through Saturn, including Mars and Saturn) count Argala in the normal forward direction
- Prior error: PVNR had previously taught that Mars and Saturn also reverse — this is incorrect
- The reversal applies only to the planet causing the Argala, not to the sign it occupies
- When counting Argala FROM Rahu or Ketu's position, count backward (reverse direction)
- When Rahu/Ketu are in an Argala sthana, their Argala is counted in reverse
"I want to correct something I said before. Mars and Saturn are not reversed. Only Rahu and Ketu — because they are shadows, tamograhas — they reverse. When you are counting from Rahu or Ketu, count in the reverse direction."
