Marriage Timing and the Love-Affair Signature

Navamsa lagna

• Navamsa lagna is Gemini. If the birth time were 4½ minutes earlier it would be Taurus (and it changes again about 9¼ minutes later); the Dasamsa work does not rule that out. The class keeps both in mind and then accepts Gemini.

Marriage: March 7, 1993 — Saturn daśā, Jupiter antardaśā

A student objects that Jupiter is in the 8th house of the Navamsa and should not give marriage.

• Jupiter is the 7th lord placed in the 8th. His agenda is the 7th house. He is only exposed to the resources of the 8th — anxiety and tension.
• Any other planet in the 8th would try to trouble or stop the marriage. The 7th lord there advances the agenda of the 7th. There may be last-minute problems and worry; it will not be smooth.
• The parallel: the 2nd is a maraka sthana, but the lagna lord in the 2nd never kills.
• Jupiter is the 7th lord in the Rasi as well as the Navamsa, and he is in the Upapada of the Navamsa (Capricorn).
• At the antardaśā level the arudhas the antardaśā lord touches are activated (Part 8). Jupiter has the ability to give marriage.
• PVNR notes he himself married in Saturn–Jupiter, with the same Rasi Jupiter (Virgo lagna, Jupiter in the 2nd) but a different Navamsa.

Upapada in the Rasi and in the Navamsa

• UL in the Rasi chart — the manifestation of your giving in the physical plane: the physical compromises, physically living together as wife and husband.
• UL in the Navamsa — giving in the sphere of dharma: how you and your spouse together fulfil your dharma in society.
• The Rasi upapada is more important. For some people, for whom marriage is dharma and less a physical relationship, the Navamsa upapada is more important.

The pratyantardaśā: Venus

• Venus is exalted in the Navamsa, but in the Rasi he is combust, within a degree of the Sun. Venus daśā will not be a great daśā.
• In the Navamsa he is the 5th lord in a kendra (the 10th).
• 9th house = the past. 5th house = the future. Both trines show blessings, but the 9th looks back and the 5th looks ahead. When the 5th lord of a divisional chart is engaged, it shows, like lagna, a new beginning or a focus on the future.

The signature of falling in love

PVNR sees the links and asks whether it was a love marriage. It was arranged — but she had wanted to marry someone else.

• A link between Venus, the 5th house and the Darapada (A7), in Rasi or Navamsa or both: the person is likely to fall in love.
• The 5th is the house of emotions. The Darapada is the people you get to know. Venus is the planet of romance.
• In her Rasi: Venus is in the 5th house; he owns the Darapada (A7 is in Taurus) and aspects it by rāśi dṛṣṭi from Capricorn.
• In her Navamsa: lagna lord Mercury is in the 5th house, and the 5th lord Venus is exalted.
• Such people are romantic. "It's not like, okay, Mommy and Daddy, find me a person to marry."
• Whether she marries that person is a separate question. For that, the planets involved must also be linked to the Upapada. Here Venus is in the 8th from the Rasi upapada (Gemini, in the 10th house, with the Moon). So it cannot be concluded that she marries the one she loves.

Upapada Lagna — Which Relationship Counts as a Marriage

Counting marriages

• In the Rasi: the Upapada shows the first marriage, the 8th from it the second, the 8th from that the third.
• In the Navamsa: the 7th house shows the first spouse, the 8th from the 7th (the 2nd house) the second spouse, and so on.
• The Rasi upapada does not show the husband. It shows the marriage itself, the relationship. To say what kind of person the husband is — aggressive, intelligent, pious, what his work is — take the Navamsa.
• The husbands need not be alike. Someone may be married first to a very mean person and then to a very pious one.

What counts as a marriage

PVNR asks how long she knew the man she wanted to marry. Two years.

• Even with no formal marriage: if a person was committed to another, strongly wanted to marry, and looked on that person as a spouse or fiancé for a long time, that is a marriage astrologically, though not in civil terms.
• A student objects that in society her marriage is the first. "Yes, but astrology doesn't bother about that." Two years of a strong relationship is enough to take an upapada.

"What is UL? It is not tying a knot. UL is commitment. UL is the arudha of the 12th house, giving. It is the manifestation of the giving — a tangible commitment."

• So the two-year relationship is her first upapada, and the man is seen from the 7th of the Navamsa (Sagittarius). The husband she married is the second.
• Had the affair lasted a day, a week or a month, the first upapada would have shown the marriage arranged by her parents.

How did he know? He asked

A student asks where the long affair was seen. "I didn't figure it out. I asked her."

• You have to ask, especially when there is a doubt whether the upapada has the strength to give a lasting relationship.
• PVNR has seen cases where every reading from the upapada was nonsense: the timing and the spouse's nature did not come through. He then asked the man whether he had an affair at the end of 1994. He had — a strong one.

Why the first relationship could not become a marriage (Rasi chart)

• First upapada: Gemini, with the Moon in it.
• The 2nd from the upapada shows the bringing about of the marriage. The 2nd lord from Gemini is the Moon, and he is in the upapada.
• The 9th from the upapada is the protection — the purva punya that brings that particular marriage. There is purva punya behind each event of life: some brings the first marriage, some the second, some a particular job.
• The 9th from Gemini is Aquarius, and Rahu is there, inimical to the Moon. The purva punya is not conducive.
• Rahu in the 9th from the upapada also shows the relationship was considered adharmic. The 9th from the upapada is the dharma of that marriage; Rahu is the outcast and breaks dharma. For some reason the parents or society did not consider it right.
• Conclusion: this relationship did not have the strength to blossom into a formal marriage.

The second upapada: Capricorn

• 8th from Gemini = Capricorn. Venus and Sun are in it.
• Its lord is Saturn. The 2nd from it is Aquarius, with Rahu there; the 2nd lords are Saturn and Rahu. The 9th lord from it is Mercury (Virgo), a friend of them all.
• This marriage has the strength to come about.
• Venus is completely combust, so Venus did not bring it. Saturn and Rahu brought it.
• Between the co-lords of Aquarius: Rahu is in Aquarius himself. When choosing the stronger co-lord, ignore the one placed in the sign and take the other. So it is Saturn.
• Saturn brings a traditional, arranged marriage. Saturn, Ketu and Jupiter are the planets of traditional marriage.

The Second Husband from Navamsa

Which sign

• The man of the first relationship: the 7th of the Navamsa, Sagittarius. Take Sagittarius as lagna and read the planets from it (Jupiter, though debilitated, is in the 2nd from it). The student knew nothing about him, so PVNR leaves it.
• The husband: the 8th from the 7th, Cancer (the 2nd house of the Navamsa).

First read the sign itself

"When you see Sagittarius, say that the person is righteous. When you see Aries, say that the person is very dynamic, very enterprising. Similarly, when you see Cancer, the person is very sensitive."

• Even without any planet, Cancer as lagna means a person more sensitive than others. The student confirms he is very sensitive.
• A spouse read from the Navamsa never gives fully focused results. Take the broad nature.

Planets from Cancer

• Lagna lord Moon in the 12th (Gemini) with Saturn. Lagna lord in the 12th with Saturn: prone to depression — "suicidal" may be too strong a word. PVNR expects it of the husband. The student says the wife is the more depressed of the two; her state is read from her own Navamsa lagna (Part 13).
• Mars in the 2nd (Leo): an aggressive speaker.
• Saturn in the paka lagna (the sign holding the lagna lord, Gemini): a selfish person. PVNR mentions this later in the class.

His career

• The 10th from Cancer is Aries, and Rahu is in it. The students guess an engineer, then a mechanical engineer — Rahu and Mars are the planets.
• PVNR: a good guess, and you cannot be more specific. Even from a person's own Dasamsa you can only say software, hardware, design, mechanical or civil engineer.
• Another student guesses government administration, because the 10th lord Mars is in Leo. PVNR: a good guess, but the Sun is in Pisces, the 12th from that 10th house. The Sun has no role. Had the Sun had argala on the 10th, the guess would have held.

A wrong argument set aside

A student suggests the marriage is troubled because the husband's lagna (Cancer) and her lagna (Gemini) are 2nd and 12th from each other.

• The second marriage is always seen from the 2nd house. It will always be in 2/12 to the lagna. On that logic every second marriage would have clashes.
• "That's not the logic. There is some other reason." The reason is given in Part 15.

Her Own Marital Life from Navamsa Lagna

Whether it is the first, second or third marriage, her existence in marital life is read from her own Navamsa lagna, Gemini.

7th lord Jupiter in the 8th, debilitated

• The relationship is strained.
• It bears more on the first relationship: it may show the first marriage not being able to be brought about.

Moon and Saturn in lagna

• The Moon is the planet of mind. Saturn is the planet of sadness. Together they give a lot of sadness and depression.

"Unhappiness, lots of planets can give. But Saturn makes you cry. He makes you so sad that you want to cry."

• If Saturn afflicts the Moon and lagna, the person may even want to die. It is the combination for depression and for suicidal tendencies.
• If someone comes with Moon and Saturn in the Rasi lagna, be very careful. Direct that person to a psychiatrist, especially when the corresponding daśās are running.
• Here it is in the Navamsa, so it is confined to marital life. In the Rasi it would have been worse.
• Saturn is not only the 9th lord but also the 8th lord.
• Saturn is the 9th lord in the lagna, his maraṇa kāraka sthāna. The 9th is dharma and fortune. In the marriage there will be some breaking of dharma; dharma cannot be maintained. She is not lucky here.
• The Moon is her Ātmakāraka.

Lagna lord Mercury with Ketu in the 5th

• The lagna lord could relieve the unhappiness. He is in the 5th, which is good — but with Ketu, the planet of dissipation, who burns everything.
• Ketu is also the 6th lord here. Lagna lord and 6th lord together in the 5th do not show love. They show quarrels and fights.

Career strong, marriage unlucky

• In the Dasamsa the 9th lord is in the 10th house. In her profession she is a strong and lucky lady.
• In the Navamsa the 9th lord is in maraṇa kāraka sthāna, and lagna and Moon are afflicted by the 8th lord.

The Navamsa is the pillar

A student observes that this must affect the rest of her personality too. PVNR agrees.

"Navamsa is not just marriage. Marriage is one aspect of the Navamsa. Navamsa is the chart of your dharma. It is the pillar on which the rest of your existence stands."

• The fortune you get in this life from the punya of past lives is in the Navamsa. From that fortune you are given certain abilities. From those abilities you have a certain dharma to fulfil in society.
• The Rasi is the chart of physical existence. The Navamsa is the chart of inner existence.
• With Jupiter in the 8th, the 9th lord in maraṇa kāraka sthāna and the lagna lord with the 6th lord Ketu: "she has a tormented inner self."

Graha Arudhas — Satya and Maya

PVNR shows the graha arudhas in the software without teaching how to compute them yet.

Notation

• A1, A2 … A12 are the arudhas of the houses (bhava arudhas).
• L1, L2 … L12 are the arudhas of the house lords (graha arudhas). L5 is the arudha of the lord of the 5th house.

Houses and planets

• Houses show inanimate circumstances. Arudhas of houses show the tangible manifestation of those circumstances.
• Planets are animate — they keep moving. A body may be inanimate, but there is a life force in it that makes it think, move and do things. That life force is seen from the house lords.
• Example, the 4th house of learning:
  • The 4th house — the inanimate circumstance of learning.
  • A4 — the tangible side: what you are learning, from which books, at what place.
  • The 4th lord — the engine behind the learning: intelligence being applied to learning.
• Every house lord is the application of intelligence to the matters of that house. "All grahas are basically Narayana. The intelligence is Narayana."

Whose intelligence is the 7th lord?

The 7th lord shows the application of intelligence to relationships. Is it my intelligence or my wife's?

"If you think that the life force within me and the life force within somebody else that I am interacting with are different, you are in the world of Maya."

• Houses and house lords are Satya — truth, the permanent reality.
• Arudhas are what rises and manifests in the world of Maya — illusion.
• The intelligence in me applied to my learning and the intelligence in my guru applied to my learning are not two things. They are the same Narayana.

"Narayana is satya, but Lakshmi is maya. Shiva is satya, but Parvati, Shakti, is maya. So the same Shiva is within all of us."

• "When you are looking at the 7th lord, don't think that it is your intelligence. It is your wife's intelligence also."
• Each house lord is the universal intelligence applied to the matters of that house, through the native or through other people.
• The God in you, in me and in everybody is the same. It is wrong even to think of it as different parts of one thing.

What the graha arudha is

• The Divine Mother creates the illusion that this existence is one separate person and that existence another. The separation comes from Maya.
• The arudha of a house lord is the manifestation of that intelligence as a separate person.
• The house lord is the universal intelligence applied to the house. His arudha is the individual person, or set of persons, you can point to.

L1 is not the Arudha Lagna

• L1 — how the native manifests as a separate thinking and feeling person. In the Navamsa, in marital life. In the Dasamsa, in professional life.
• AL — inanimate: manifestation as a circumstance, a situation, a status — a lucky person, an unlucky person, a well-known person.
• Whether someone appears intelligent or pious has so far been read from the arudha lagna. Strictly it should not be.

"Wherever thinking, feeling, intelligence is involved, it should be seen from the lords, the planets, rather than the houses. So that should be seen from the graha arudhas."

L1 and L2 — Why the Marriage Is Strained

Finding the two people

• The second husband is the 2nd house of the Navamsa. The actual person is seen from the arudha of the lord of that house: L2.
• She herself, as a separate thinking person in marital life: L1.
• In her Navamsa L1 is in Aquarius and L2 is in Leo (the 3rd house).

Reading them

A student says the two are opposite each other.

• Opposition is not the logic. Vedic astrology does not speak of opposition; the 7th is a kendra and can be a good relationship.
• Look at the lords of the two signs. Aquarius — Saturn. Leo — Sun.

"One is the king and one is the poor servant, poor labourer. She is the poor labourer and he is the king, and they don't get along well. Sun and Saturn are worst enemies."

• That is why the relationship with the second husband is strained. It is not because Cancer and Gemini are in 2/12, which is the case for everybody's second marriage.

How bad is it

• In some charts the negative influences are slight; some pujas and things are solved. In some they are very strong and there is not much you can do.
• This chart has a lot of weakness in itself — Moon with the 8th lord Saturn in lagna — and on top of it L1 and L2 fall in the houses of Saturn and Sun. The husband reads as selfish. There are further negative indications PVNR does not go into.
• Even so, he says this case is not as bad as the one case in which he advised divorce (Part 16).
