Rajiv Gandhi's Chart — Political Power Analysis

Chart: Aug 20, 1944, 7:12:45 AM IST, Mumbai (72°E49', 18°N58'). Leo lagna with Sun, Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus in it; Mars in Virgo; Saturn in Gemini in the 11th; Rahu in Cancer in the 12th.

Who Gives Political Power?

The teacher hides the dashas and asks which dasha the class would expect to make him Prime Minister.

• Sun is the significator of political power. Mars is the secondary planet.
• In D-10 (Sagittarius lagna) Sun is in the 10th house with Ketu → a political leader, a powerful person.
• Sun is the 9th lord. An 8th lord in the 10th would be bad.

• 9th lord Sun in the 10th: a powerful position comes to him very simply.
• With five planets in the Rasi lagna, every planet influences every house and the Rasi chart alone gives no clear reading. For career, forget them and read D-10.

The Exchange Rule — When It Does Not Work

Sun and Ketu are together in the 10th of D-10. Sun dasha or Ketu dasha?

"If we two are staying in one room, we become so close that you do my things and I do your things. But if we are utter enemies, even if we are staying in one room, we will stay in two different corners and we will not do each other's job."

• Sun + Jupiter: Sun can give Jupiter's results and Jupiter can give Sun's.
• Sun + Ketu: Ketu wants to eclipse Sun. They will obstruct each other's results, not give them. So the answer is Sun dasha. (Ketu would still earn 60% marks as a guess.)
• Moon + Rahu: very likely Moon gives Moon's results.
• The nodes hate the luminaries. In the Kurma Avatara story Sun and Moon saw them taking the nectar and told Narayana; Mohini cut the head off. They became an immortal head and an immortal tail.
• With Mercury, Venus and Saturn the nodes are fine. Mars is another planet badly affected by the nodes.
• Jupiter, Sun and Ketu together (a student's question): in order of beneficence it is Jupiter, Sun, Ketu. Sun gives his own results. Jupiter and Ketu exchange — they have no problem giving each other's results.

The Blind Test on Vimshottari

• He became Prime Minister at the end of October 1984, when his mother was assassinated.
• Vimshottari from Moon gives Rahu dasha. Rahu is the 3rd lord in the 4th house of D-10.
• If this man had come in 1980, would you have predicted Prime Minister in Rahu dasha? The class says no.

"Don't think that you have to justify it because it happened. That is the wrong approach. If something makes sense, use it. If something doesn't make sense, you are missing something."

The Conditional Dasha

• Lagna lord Sun is in lagna; the 7th lords are Saturn in the 11th and Rahu in the 12th → Dwisaptati Sama does not apply.
• The 10th lord is not in the 10th → Chaturaseeti Sama does not apply.
• Sun is in lagna → Shashtihayani dasha applies.
• Jupiter dasha came before: Jupiter is the lagna lord in the lagna of D-10 — a dharma trikona, not an artha trikona. Righteous activity, not political power.
• Sun dasha began in March 1984. Within a few months his mother was assassinated and the Prime Ministership was thrust on him.

Antardasha Bhoga — The 1989 Election

In Sun dasha, Venus antardasha, he went to elections in November 1989.

• Count from mahadasha lord Sun (Virgo) to antardasha lord Venus (Aquarius): 6 signs.
• Count 6 signs from Venus: Cancer — the 8th house of D-10.
• Bhoga in the 8th is good for occult activity. For political activity it is a setback, possibly loss of power.

"If the bhoga in a particular antardasha is in the 8th house, you will be a fool to carry out elections in that antardasha."

• Mercury antardasha: bhoga falls in the 2nd house. Not great power, and the 2nd holds the 8th lord, so some tension — but not as bad. Elections six months earlier would probably have kept him in power.

Love Marriage Formula — A7 and Venus

Which Dasha Gave the Marriage?

He fell in love with Sonia Gandhi in 1966–67 and married in 1968.

• Vimshottari: Moon dasha, 1964–1974.
• Asked to pick blind from Rasi and Navamsa, most of the class picks Saturn: 7th lord in the Rasi, and in the Navamsa the 7th lord sitting in the 7th in his own sign with good dig bala.
• Mars is the other candidate: he sits in the Upapada (Virgo) in the Rasi and is the Upapada lord in the Navamsa.
• Moon can be justified — he is with Venus in the Navamsa and aspects the 7th in the Rasi — but so can seven planets on that criterion. No strong logic picks Moon.
• Shashtihayani: the falling in love and the settling of the marriage happened in Saturn dasha. The teacher does not know whether the ceremony itself fell in Saturn dasha or in Rahu dasha, which followed around March 1968. Rahu also owns Aquarius, the 7th.

The Formula

• Karakas: Moon and Venus.
• House: the 5th.
• Pada: A7, the Darapada — the arudha of the 7th house.

Rajiv Gandhi, Rasi chart: A7 is in Libra, a Venusian sign. The planets in Leo aspect it by rasi drishti — Venus and Moon among them. Venus's aspect matters most because he is also the lord of the sign.

• Darapada in a sign of Venus → there is a chance the person will fall in love. The indication is there but not very strong.

Rajiv Gandhi, Navamsa: A7 is in the 5th house (Sagittarius) with Mercury in it. Venus and Moon, in Virgo in the 2nd, both aspect it by rasi drishti. Here it is far clearer.

• The planets who make him fall in love: Venus and Moon. Mercury — their dispositor and the planet in A7 — is also a strong candidate, perhaps as antardasha lord.
• Why Saturn in the 7th gave it, the teacher says he has no answer. But Saturn as 7th lord can get them married.

Pt. Sanjay Rath, Rasi chart: A7 is in Cancer — Moon's sign — with Venus in it, and it is the 5th house. A love marriage is obvious from the Rasi alone. He did have a love marriage.

Extramarital Affairs

A student asks about a relationship that begins after marriage, without breaking the marriage.

• Not seen from UL. Seen from the Darapada — Darapada is affairs.
• Look at the influences on the Darapada in the Rasi chart. If a planet influencing it has its dasha running, there can be an affair.

7th from Venus — Who Arranges the Marriage and From Where

The Rule

• The 7th house shows the marriage and what kind of spouse you have — idealistic, religious, and so on.
• The Upapada shows the family background of the spouse.
• The 7th from Venus shows strictly how the marriage comes about: where the spouse comes from, far or near, who brings it, whether it is arranged or crosses barriers. It is not where love marriage is seen — that is the Darapada.

"7th from Venus shows where spouse comes from. 7th house will show what kind of spouse you have."

Read the lord of the 7th from Venus: which planet he is, who is with him or afflicting him, the sign he occupies, and the house he occupies counted from lagna. A planet sitting in the 7th from Venus also plays a role, but the lord matters more. Navamsa is the better chart for this. The teacher's estimate: it works about 80% of the time.

The Planet — Who Brings the Marriage

• Sun, Jupiter, Moon, Venus show the dharmic path. If such a planet is the lord and is not afflicted by Saturn or Rahu, the marriage is dharmic, brought by the parents.
• "Sun is the planet of dharma — even more than Jupiter."
• Rahu as the lord, or with the lord: somebody from a foreign country, or somebody the group treats as an outcast — an inter-caste marriage. Rahu breaks the barriers. You cannot guarantee a foreigner; you can say untraditional, with a cultural difference.
• Rahu and Ketu are the Chandalas. Sun and Moon are Kshatriyas, Jupiter and Venus Brahmanas; the nodes have no caste. The Rahu–Ketu axis on the lord of the 7th from Venus is not desirable for a traditional marriage.
• If a parent wants the daughter married within the community and the chart shows this, say so — they can be cautious, or at least prepared.

The House — Through What Connection

Counted from lagna:

• Lord in the 10th: somebody at your workplace or in a professional setting.
• Lord in the 11th: a friend, somebody referred by a friend, or a friend of your elder brother.
• Lord in the 3rd: a friend of your brother.
• Lord in the 12th: from abroad.

The Sign — How Far

• "Close" has two definitions and either can apply: close to your birthplace, or close to where you live now.
• Saturn and Rahu as planets also show far away.

Stronger Co-Lord — Saturn or Rahu

When the 7th from Venus is Aquarius, Saturn and Rahu both own it. Decide the stronger lord:

1. Who is with more planets.
2. Who is aspected by more of these three: his dispositor, Jupiter, Mercury. (Being in Mercury's sign does not count; it must be an aspect.)
3. Exaltation wins; debilitation loses.
4. The sign occupied: dual is strongest, fixed next, movable weakest. The teacher had not given this fourth rule before.

Example: Rajiv Gandhi — Why a Foreigner

• Rasi: Venus is in Leo; the 7th from Venus is Aquarius. Saturn (Gemini) and Rahu (Cancer) are both alone, and neither is aspected by Jupiter, Mercury or his dispositor. Tie on rules 1–3. Saturn is in a dual sign, Rahu in a movable sign → Saturn wins.
• Saturn is in the 11th house: a friend, somebody referred by a friend, or a friend of the elder brother. Saturn as a planet: somebody from a faraway culture.
• Navamsa: Venus is in Virgo; the 7th is Pisces; its lord Jupiter is with Rahu in Cancer — Guru-Chandala yoga — in the 12th house from lagna.
• Rahu afflicting the lord → an untraditional marriage, a cultural difference.
• 12th house, and the sign is Cancer → from abroad, across the seas.

Example: the 1965 Chart — Mars–Saturn Parivartana

• Navamsa (Aries lagna): Venus is in Cancer; the 7th from Venus is Capricorn; its lord Saturn is in lagna in Aries — debilitated and retrograde.
• Saturn is in parivartana with Mars, who is exalted in Capricorn in the 10th. They are enemies: one conservative and selfish, the other "go and fight". An exchange between Venus and Saturn would read differently.
• Reading: confusing, conflicting influences. Saturn shows confusion, Mars aggression. After some confusion there is some aggression and it ends in a marriage.
• Because of the exchange Saturn acts as if he is in the 10th house → by the theory, somebody known through work. The native says it was not the workplace. The teacher: the 10th is karma; if they met in college through a project, it fits.
• Saturn shows elders and is debilitated → the elders may not be happy. Mars is the lagna lord — the native — and exalted → he is bold and goes about it aggressively.

"Exaltation is like the state of being at a party."

• Rahu is in the 2nd from Saturn — an argala on him. With Saturn involved, some crossing of barriers. But not a foreigner.
• The class moves on before the native confirms the reading.

Example: the 1949 Chart — The Teacher's Judgment Fails

• Navamsa: Venus is in Aquarius; the 7th is Leo; its lord Sun is with Ketu in Virgo. Rahu, with Jupiter in Pisces, aspects him from the opposite sign.
• A student says Ketu is traditional. The teacher disagrees: Sun is being eclipsed by Ketu, there is a Guru-Chandala yoga, and it all lies on the axis of the lord of the 7th from Venus. He expects some jumping over the barriers.
• The native's answer: it was fully traditional. His father and her father went to school together. Same caste, horoscopes matched.

"Okay, so my judgment is wrong."

• What does hold: the lord is Sun → the father arranged it.
• Distance: he lived in one city and she in another. Sun is in a dual sign → not the same town, not another country.
• Rasi: Venus is in Gemini. The 7th from Venus, Sagittarius, has Moon in it. Its lord Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn but retrograde, which the teacher takes as equivalent to exaltation. Jupiter and Moon give the traditional influence.
• "Usually Navamsa dominates over Rasi, but somehow Rasi dominated over Navamsa in this case."

Example: the 1974 Chart — Father Arranges

• Navamsa: Venus is in Aquarius with Sun. The 7th from Venus is Leo; it contains Mercury; its lord is Sun.
• Sun is not afflicted by Saturn, Rahu or Ketu and is in good company with Venus → a marriage brought by the parents, by the father's will.
• Mercury in the 7th from Venus → an uncle or aunt may also play a role. The native confirms: not an uncle, but his father's sister.
• Sun is in a fixed sign → somebody from his birthplace, or from where he lives now.

D-12 (Dvadasamsa) — Parents and Knowledge Lineage

The Houses of D-12

• 4th house = mother. 9th house = father.
• 9th from the 4th (the 12th) = maternal grandfather.
• 9th from the 9th (the 5th) = paternal grandfather.
• 3rd from the 9th (the 11th) = father's younger brother. The 11th from the 9th is his elder brother.

A student asks whether the lord of the house becomes the lagna. No — the house itself is the lagna for that person. Read the whole D-12 from that sign. It is analogous to that person's Rasi chart; there is only this one chart for them, so the analysis cannot be very fine.

To see the power of the mother, look at the 5th and 10th from the 4th: "5th is the house of influence and 10th is the house of kingdom, the actual crown."

Rajiv Gandhi's D-12 — Who Had Political Power?

D-12 lagna is Capricorn. Sun and Mars are together in Virgo.

Mother — Aries (4th house)

• Sun and Mars are in the 6th from Aries. For malefics the 6th is one of the three good placements.
• Two malefics in the 6th make a materialistic and ruthless person. "The 3rd house gives bravery, but the 6th gives ruthlessness in actually finishing off the enemy." Indira Gandhi was known as the Iron Lady.
• Placement is not enough; their agenda must be power. Mars is the lagna lord, Sun the 5th lord. Lagna lord and 5th lord conjoined in an upachaya → Raj Yoga. And they are Sun and Mars, the planets of political power.

Father — Virgo (9th house)

• Sun and Mars are in the lagna. Sun in lagna = idealistic. Mars in lagna = aggressive, enterprising.
• From Virgo they are the 12th lord and the 8th lord. No political power.
• Feroz Gandhi: aggressive and idealistic, but politically deprived.

Maternal grandfather — Sagittarius (9th from the 4th)

• 5th lord Mars and 9th lord Sun conjoined in the 10th house, a kendra → an excellent Raj Yoga. A great political leader: Jawaharlal Nehru.
• Jupiter is in lagna in moolatrikona → Hamsa Yoga; a righteous person.
• Venus is exalted in the 4th → Malavya Yoga.

Mahapurusha Yoga: Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Mars or Mercury in a kendra, in exaltation, moolatrikona or own sign.

• Jupiter: righteous, noble, respected and followed.
• Venus: loves luxuries; poet; rich.
• Mars: aggressive; a good organizer and warrior.
• Mercury: a scholar who takes care of all his relatives; learned and capable.
• Saturn: ruthless; many servants; works hard and makes others work hard.
• Two at once: exaltation dominates moolatrikona, and moolatrikona dominates own sign. Here Venus wins → a Malavya person, a bhoga-purusha — luxury, comfort, romantic, creative.
• From memory the teacher recalls Nehru's own chart: Cancer lagna with Moon in it and Venus in the 4th. "If you look for connections, you will find them."

Correlating D-10 and D-12

A student asks whether the mother's death can be tied to his rise. Yes — by correlating D-12 (mother) with D-10 (career).

• Sun in the 10th of D-10 gives his political power.
• The same Sun, with Mars, gives the mother her power in D-12. Mars is also the 5th lord in his D-10.

"If a particular planet is showing mother's power in D-12 and his power in D-10, it is possible that he will inherit that power from mother."

• From the father's lagna the same Sun and Mars give nothing. The power is not inherited from the father.
• The grandfather was a big politician, the mother got the power from him, and Rajiv got it from them — in Sun dasha, through the mother's death.
• None of this can be seen in the Rasi chart.

Sanjay Rath — Astrological Knowledge Lineage in D-12 and D-24

Chart: Pt. Sanjay Rath, Aug 7, 1963, 9:15 PM IST, Sambalpur (83°E58', 21°N27'). The teacher opens it to see why the knowledge came to him from his grandfather and his uncle.

His own learning — D-24 (Gemini lagna)

• Mercury is the lagna lord and the 4th lord. Venus is the 5th lord, of retention.
• Learning itself is the 4th house: Virgo and Mercury show how he learnt astrology.

D-12 (Leo lagna): Rahu in Aries; Jupiter and Mercury in Capricorn; Moon in Virgo.

Paternal grandfather — Sagittarius (9th from the 9th)

• Jupiter and Mercury are in the 2nd house → a very good astrologer.
• Virgo is his 10th house of karma. The sign that shows Sanjay Rath's learning in D-24 shows the grandfather's karma. He sees teaching his grandson as his karma.
• Moon in Virgo is his 8th lord → what he passes on is his occult knowledge. He sits with the boy and explains the principles.

Father — Aries (9th house)

• Rahu is in the lagna. Jupiter and Mercury are not in his 2nd, 8th or 11th. Not a good astrologer.
• Virgo is his 6th house — obstruction. He obstructs the learning; he does not aid it.
• The fact: the father had no strong belief in astrology and was against his son learning it. Sanjay Rath once recounted that while he was away, his father burnt all his astrology books.

Father's younger brother — Gemini (3rd from the 9th)

• Jupiter and Mercury are in his 8th house — the same two who are in the 2nd for the grandfather. They are his lagna lord and 10th lord together: a Raj Yoga. A very good astrologer.
• Virgo is his 4th house, and it holds Moon, his 2nd lord. He turns his resources and his predictions towards Virgo.
• Moon as 2nd lord = actual predictions. The uncle gives readings to the people who come to him, and the nephew sits and learns the application.
• The fact: this uncle learnt astrology from his own father, and Sanjay Rath learnt more from him than from the grandfather.

"If you see Jupiter or Mercury in the 2nd or 8th house, conclude that it's a good astrologer, or somebody who's learned in Vedanga, learned in occult sciences."

Conclusion: Virgo and Mercury carry his learning in D-24, and in D-12 they tie to exactly the two relatives who were astrologers — the grandfather (karma, occult knowledge) and the uncle (predictions). From them the knowledge came. The father stood in the way.

Adoption (a student's question): how are adoptive parents seen in D-12 as against the birth parents? The teacher has no answer and no guidance from his gurus on it. Combinations for adoption exist — a Dattaputra yoga is listed in B.V. Raman's 300 Important Combinations.
