Druk Dasha — Methodology

What is Druk Dasha?

Druk = vision. The dasha is the progression of the 9th house.

Jaimini's sutra (2nd adhyaya, 4th pada, as the teacher recalls it): "Kujādi trikūṭa padakrameṇa dṛgdaśā".

• Kuja = 9 in Kaṭapayādi coding: start from the 9th.
• Trikūṭa: in groups of three.
• Padakrameṇa: one commentator reads this as the odd-footed / even-footed (oja-pada, sama-pada) order. The teacher adds another meaning of pada: the ray of light that lets you see, and the spot between the eyebrows. So: in the order of the passing of the ray of light.

The 9th house is the storehouse of God's light in the chart. That light guides every activity — dharma, artha, kama and moksha. Seeing is light reflecting from one thing to the next.

"Dṛg daśā is basically tracing how the light travels with time, how the light of God reflects on various things and makes them visible."

• Though it starts from the 9th, it is not a dasha of dharma alone. The purpose of God's light, and of religion, is to see your true self.
• Summary: Druk Dasha shows religious activities and the spiritual progress that results from them.
• The teacher has not studied how to see the deity worshipped from Druk Dasha. It shows the path of progress and the kind of sadhana, not the deity.

How to Analyze a Druk Dasha

Step 1 — Natal influences on the dasha sign. Planets in it and aspecting it; the yogas they form. The dasha activates these.

Step 2 — Dasha lagna. The dasha sign is the progressed 9th house. So the 5th from the dasha sign is the progressed lagna. Read the natal chart from that sign. Watch its 8th (sadhana), 9th (religious activity) and 12th (detachment, moksha).

Step 3 — Agenda of the planets. To judge how strong a combination seen from the dasha lagna is, check what those planets rule from the natal lagna. A planet in the 12th from the dasha lagna whose natal agenda lies elsewhere works less for the 12th. A cluster in the 10th from the dasha lagna that includes the natal 9th or 10th lord gives a stronger result — a person who founds an ashram or a society.

Step 4 — Dasha Pravesha Chakra. Take the Tajika (annual) chart of the year the dasha begins and read it from the same dasha lagna. It is the birth chart of the dasha.

"Whichever factors are matching between the two, those results we can be more confident of. And factors which are only showing up in one chart and not in the other, we are not so confident to make predictions on those."

Antardashas start from the mahadasha sign. Each is read the same way: 5th from the antardasha sign as lagna, in the natal chart and in the entry chart of the antardasha.

House weights within a dasha:

• 9th strong — religious activities.
• 8th strong — sadhana, effort.
• 12th strong — detachment and inner progress. Do not predict renunciation from this alone; everybody gets a dasha in which the 12th is strong.

Calculation was covered in the previous class and the seminar. The teacher says it takes about twenty seconds by hand.

Chart Analysis — Swami Sivananda (Spirituality Example)

Birth: Swami Sivananda of Rishikesh, founder of the Divine Life Society. 8 September 1887, 4:16 AM, 5h11m east of GMT (local mean time), 77°40'E, 8°48'N — far south India. Lahiri ayanamsa.
Lagna: Cancer 28°14', Ashlesha 4th pada
Moon: Aries 22°41' — Atmakaraka. Bhratrikaraka: Mercury.

Druk Dasha sequence (from Pisces, the 9th from Cancer):

• Pisces: 1887–1896
• Sagittarius: 1896–1905
• Virgo: 1905–1914
• Gemini: 1914–1923
• Aries: September 1923 – September 1930 ← the dasha that turned things around

The Events

The teacher gives these from memory of the Divine Life Society's biography and asks the class to verify the dates.

• Until 1923 he was a successful doctor in Malaysia, fond of luxuries, gems and rings.
• A book by a sadhu turned him to spirituality.
• About 1924 he came to India and decided to renounce. In north India a swami came to him, said the time had come, and gave him diksha.
• Years of intense tapasya followed. He served patients, washing and massaging the legs of those with leprosy. He sat in a hut infested with snakes and scorpions.
• The biography claims Nirvikalpa Samadhi, undated; the teacher places it around 1927.

Savikalpa samadhi still has a seed of "I" — you may see the universe as your deity sees it. In Nirvikalpa there is no seer at all, only Brahman.

Aries Dasha in the Natal Chart

1. Lagna lord Moon is in Aries. Good, but that alone does not mean great spiritual experiences.
2. A guru arrives. Check whether the 9th lord or the Bhratrikaraka aspects the dasha sign. Mercury, the Bhratrikaraka, is in Leo and aspects Aries by rāśi dṛṣṭi. A guru can come in this dasha.
3. Dasha lagna = Leo, the 5th from Aries.
4. 12th from Leo (Cancer) holds Mars, Saturn and Rahu. Three malefics make the 12th extremely strong: sannyasa and intense sadhana.

The planets in the 12th:

• All are ugra grahas, so the sadhana is fierce.
• The two Kanchi Shankaracharyas also had two or three planets in the 12th from the progressed lagna in the dasha of their renunciation — Mercury, Sun and Jupiter in one case, Mercury, Sun and Ketu in the other. Mercury shows sattvic and rajasic forms of the Divine Mother; the Sun, Vedic and dharmic knowledge. Their path was milder.
• Saturn and Rahu are vāyu planets: Raja yoga, pranayama. Sivananda practised it and wrote a book on Raja yoga and Kundalini, to clear up misconceptions. He called the practice dangerous without a qualified master.
• Rahu is materialistic in the 3rd, 6th or 11th. In the 12th he is no obstacle. Rahu and Ketu are vital to experiencing what is beyond form.

Agenda of Saturn and Rahu:

• From the natal lagna they are the 8th lords (Aquarius) — lords of sadhana — placed in the moksha sthana from the dasha lagna.
• From the dasha lagna Leo they are the 7th lords in the 12th: loss of desires; renouncing relationships, marriage and sex.

Pravrajya Yoga (Dasha Pravesha Chakra)

The Tajika chart of September 1923, read from Leo:

• Five planets in Leo: Sun, Moon, Mars, Venus, Rahu. The Moon has only just entered Leo.
• Pravrajya (Parivrajya) yoga: the 10th lord in a quadrant with four other planets makes a sannyasi. Some say four or more planets in a quadrant is enough. Here Venus, 10th lord from Leo, is in lagna with four others.
• Even without the yoga: the lagna holds the lagna lord (Sun), the 12th lord (Moon), Rahu and the yogakaraka 9th lord (Mars). So active a lagna shows epoch-making events in the dasha.
• The natal chart from the same dasha lagna has the three planets in the 12th. Both charts agree.

"Had this person come to you before, you could have actually predicted that there is a very good chance of him becoming a sannyasi."

The Nirvikalpa Samadhi Observation

"When people experience Nirvikalpa Samadhi, I have seen that Sun and/or Moon is afflicted by Ketu on the lagna axis in the daśā praveśa of the Dṛg daśā."

• Stated more fully: Sun and Moon with Rahu and Ketu on the lagna axis of the Dasha Pravesha Chakra.
• Here Sun and Moon are with Rahu in Leo, the dasha lagna, and Ketu is in the 7th.
• Ramakrishna Paramahamsa had it in the dasha in which Totapuri took him to Nirvikalpa. A third chart cannot be disclosed.
• Sun and Moon eclipsed in lagna can show the mind reaching the state Vasishtha calls mind becoming no-mind.

Caveat (given at the end of the class): this rests on three charts. It is a good combination and may show some experience. Do not predict Nirvikalpa Samadhi from it. Heads of great mathas have not had it.
