Mahatma Gandhi's Chart — Career and Death Analysis

Arudha Lagna — Image

• The teacher's caveat on the birth time (7:21 AM, local mean time): he has not verified it; it was left in his computer. The Rasi chart should be right; the Navamsa may be wrong.
• Libra lagna. AL is in Cancer, with Moon and Rahu there.
• Rahu in Arudha Lagna: someone who goes against the norm, unconventional; also the image of a manipulator. In general Rahu in AL shows scandals.
  • There are sections of society that see Gandhi as a cheat and manipulator.
• Moon is in own house, so Moon is strong. Rahu is about 15° away — not close enough to eclipse him.
• Moon dominates: compassionate, kind, forgiving. The dominant image is the compassionate saint.

10th from AL — The Karma of the Image

• The 10th from AL shows the work your image is seen to be doing.
• Jupiter is in Aries, the 10th from AL. Jupiter is peace and wisdom; Aries is the sign of war.

"If Mars is in Aries, it's a war. But if Jupiter is in Aries, it's a peaceful war."

• Jupiter in Pisces there would be purely sāttvic work — a priest, a yogi meditating in the forest. Not even a war.
• Signs are the inanimate circumstances; planets bring intelligence to them. The situation is a fight; Jupiter's intelligence is brought to it. Aries is the struggle, Jupiter the non-violence.
• Moon in the 1st and Jupiter in the 10th from AL: the image of a very sāttvic person.

Which Daśā to Use

Two conditional daśās qualify:

1. Dwisaptati Sama Dasha — the 7th lord in lagna or the lagna lord in the 7th. Here 7th lord Mars is in lagna.
2. Chaturashiti Sama Dasha — the 10th lord in the 10th. Here Moon is in Cancer.

Two criteria when more than one applies:

• Take the one with the longer span.
• Take the one whose condition is least probable.
  • Lagna lord in the 7th: 1/12. 7th lord in lagna: 1/12. Either one: 1/12 + 1/12 − 1/144, slightly less than 1/6.
  • 10th lord in the 10th: 1/12.
• On both counts Chaturashiti Sama Dasha wins. Vimshottari on this chart needs approximations and compromises; this daśā explains even minute events.

D-10 — Venus Dasha (1919–1931)

• Venus is in lagna in the Rasi chart. In the Dasamsa (Sagittarius lagna) he is in the 7th with Mars, and he is the 6th lord — service, enemies, fighting.
• A10 and A8 are together in the 6th house (Taurus).
  • A10 = Rajyapada: the tangible work people can see.
  • A8 = Mrityupada: tangible suffering.
  • In a dusthāna, the house of struggle — not a kendra or trikoṇa.
  • Throughout life his tangible work coincides with his tangible suffering. Not a fortunate person from the material point of view.
  • Contrast: A10 with A9 (Bhagyapada) is a material rāja yoga — fortunate in his work.
• Jivanta Yoga: 5th lord Mars and 6th lord Venus together. (The published class notes write the name as Dheemanta Yoga — applying intelligence.)
  • The 5th is intelligence and ability, the 6th is struggle.
  • He does not learn and then relax. He uses his abilities to the full, puts them to service. An auspicious yoga.
• A4 is in the 12th house (Scorpio).
  • A4 = tangible comfort and relaxation in the career. In the 12th: given up.
  • India's annual chart had A4 in the 12th in a Venusian sign — not that bad. Here it is a martial sign: "it is that bad."
• The lord of A4 (Mars) and the lord of A8 and A10 (Venus) are together in the 7th house of desire. He is pursuing one strong desire — in his case the freedom struggle.
• A student: Venus will give Mars's results. Yes, some exchange, not full — Venus and Mars are not friends.
• Venus Dasha, 1919–1931: a period of struggle.

D-10 — Sun Dasha (July 1943–1955)

• Sun is the 9th lord: fortune and protection.
• Sun owns Leo, which holds A7 and A5.
  • A7 = the tangible interactions with the people he associates with in his karma.
  • A5 = tangible following, the trappings of power.
  • Together: he moves with powerful people and gets some power through that. In Leo, the natural sign of power: kings, prime ministers, presidents.
• Sun is in Ghatika Lagna, the centre of power and authority.
• Sun is in the 11th house, the house of fulfilment of desire.
• Reading his chart during the struggle: unlikely in Venus and Saturn daśās; in Sun Dasha the desire can be fulfilled and his country can get independence.
• But Sun is debilitated and has no strong link to the 5th or 10th. He himself did not enjoy the power. It was A7 — his associates who enjoyed it.
• A student points out nīcha bhaṅga: Venus is in a quadrant from Moon.

Gandhi's Death — 3rd from AL

• The 3rd from AL (Virgo) holds Sun.
• Sun is a pāpa graha for ordinary purposes, with Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. (For dharma, marriage and the like he counts as śubha.) Jupiter and Venus are always benefic. Moon is benefic waxing, malefic waning. Mercury takes the colour of his company.
• Sun in the 3rd from AL, per Jaimini: death by fire or firearms. Other readings of the same placement: the king's displeasure, or a high fever.

"Being killed by a gunshot is definitely one possibility when you have Sun in the 3rd from Arudha Lagna."

Indira Gandhi's Chart — Violent Death Analysis

AL in Aries — The Durga Image

• Arudha Lagna is in Aries, the war sign of Mars.
• Gandhi was seen as a peaceful saint. She is seen as a warrior — unforgiving, one who destroys enemies.
• Around the Emergency and after, propagandists in the media called her Durga.

3rd from AL = Gemini

• Gemini: gardens, press rooms, places of media and communication. Garden is one of the possibilities.
• Ketu is in Gemini. Rahu aspects it from Sagittarius — the 7th by graha dṛṣṭi, and dual sign to dual sign by rāśi dṛṣṭi.
• Mandi is with Ketu. Mandi is the son of Saturn (Manda) and worse than Saturn; he shows poison coming from other people.
  • Mandi is air, Ketu is fire: adding air to the fire.

"In the case of Gandhi, it was just Sun. Here, Rahu-Ketu on the 3rd from Arudha Lagna — Ketu there, Rahu aspecting it. So it's a very violent death."

• Rahu and Ketu: terrorists, people with no logic for what they do, moved by an extreme religious or fundamentalist ideology.

Is Ketu Debilitated in Gemini?

A student raises it. There are two sets of exaltation signs for the nodes:

• Debilitation is the opposite sign in each set.
• For death and the 3rd from AL use the longevity set. So Ketu in Gemini is debilitated only for ordinary results, not for this purpose. Not a big point here; Ketu is there, and Mandi with him.

Who Killed Her

• A student asks whether her own bodyguards can be seen. The teacher: that is tough to see.
• Servants are the 6th house — from lagna, or from Saturn, the kāraka for servants.
• To see who has a role in a death in Gemini, see which graha ārūḍhas aspect it or have argala on it. Here L6, L3, L11, L1, L8 and L7 have argala on the 3rd from AL. L6, the ārūḍha of the 6th lord, shows a servant — one of the possibilities.

"This way you can justify it, but you could not have predicted it."

Kartari Yoga

• A student mentions the "spear-bearers" of Hellenistic astrology: planets in the house before and the house after.
• The same holds here. Planets in the houses before and after a house form kartari (scissors) on it.
  • Two benefics: Shubha Kartari — they protect the house and give results as though both were in it.
  • Two malefics: Papa Kartari — the house suffers.
