Example Chart (Leo Lagna 1987): Civil Engineering → Computers/Electronics (Rahu MD Career Shift); TP 2009-10 Marriage (7L+9L+Ketu in 7H, Cancer); D7 Rahu-Venus (5L+LL) = Children ~2022-23; D20 Venus-Moon in 4H + Exalted Jupiter in 12H = No Confusion in Spiritual Direction; Deity = Lakshmi/Gayatri
A Leo-lagna civil engineer has left her first job and asks whether to work or study; her marriage is fixed for April. In the D-10 (Sagittarius lagna) the job came in Rahu-Rahu-Jupiter, Jupiter being lagna lord in the 6th aspecting the 10th, and went in the pratyantara of Saturn, the 3rd lord in the 3rd. Mercury, the 10th lord, can give a job next, and Rahu-Jupiter should give both the degree and the job. The D-24 favours further study under Jupiter and Mercury, but the nodes on the 10th axis of the D-10 and Rahu as 10th lord of the D-24 point to computers and electronics, not civil engineering. The Tithi Praveśa of 2009–10 shows the marriage: 7th lord Mercury, 9th lord Sun and Ketu together in the 7th house. The D-7 promises a child in Rahu daśā through the Rahu-Venus rāja yoga, the navāṁśa warns of friction in Rahu daśā, and the D-20 with Venus and Moon in the 4th under exalted Jupiter shows a clear spiritual direction.
Key principle
Always Venus-Moon conjunction is a very good conjunction. It gives abundance. And this happening in the 4th house of direction shows there is no confusion in spiritual matters. She will get direction very easily.
Example Charts
Case Study — Example Chart (1987), Leo Lagna
The Chart and the Question
- Lagna 12°01' Leo. Sun 3° Cancer. Moon at the very end of Aries — "on the border of Aries and Taurus". The recording sounds like 29°38', but the divisional longitudes read out later (29°39' in D-12, 29°25' in D-20) put the Moon at 29°58'; the site's chart has 29°55'.
- By house the lagna lord Sun is in the 11th, not the 12th: the 12th house begins at 12° Cancer.
- B.E. in civil engineering. She joined a job in design and planning and has left it. Should she look for a job or study further? Marriage is fixed for April 8.
- Vimshottari: Mars daśā during the degree, Rahu daśā now. Rahu-Rahu is running; the pratyantara is Saturn's, with Mercury and Ketu next.
Career Analysis (D10)
D-10 lagna is 0°08' Sagittarius — on the border with Scorpio. Rahu is at 2° Pisces, next to the 5th cusp (0°08' Aries).
- With Scorpio rising Rahu would be the 4th lord in the 5th, and giving up a job in his period makes little sense. With Sagittarius the events fit. "Probably Sagittarius is right." The birth time is kept. D-20 has the same border, so its lagna is accepted too.
Rahu-Rahu-Jupiter — she joined the job:
- Rahu is the 3rd lord (Aquarius) and aspects the 10th (graha dṛṣṭi from Pisces to Virgo, where Ketu sits). He can give a job, but as 3rd lord he gives breaks.
- Jupiter is lagna lord in the 6th (15° Taurus), aspecting the 10th by graha dṛṣṭi.
- From Rahu, counting houses backwards from 2° Pisces, Jupiter is the lagna lord in the 10th.
Rahu-Rahu-Saturn — she left the job:
- Saturn is the 3rd lord in the 3rd (Aquarius). "He can give a break. Not retirement, but a break."
- From Rahu also, Saturn owns the 2nd and 3rd (Aquarius, Capricorn, counted backwards). 3rd lord from lagna and from Rahu, in Rahu's antardaśā — a break.
What comes next:
- Saturn pratyantara (now): no job.
- Mercury pratyantara: the 10th lord aspecting the 5th. A job is possible. The next few months suit both a job and study.
- Rahu's own antardaśā, he being 3rd lord, leans to a hiatus more than to a new job.
- Jupiter antardaśā (Rahu-Jupiter): the eventful one. Whatever the course is — master's or a diploma — it should be finished within it, and she should start a job in it.
Rahu daśā for career as a whole: Rahu is in the 4th aspecting the 10th, so career is fine, but he owns the 3rd — "a career with breaks". Average, not superb. Jupiter daśā will be far smoother.
Education (D24) and Career Direction
D-24 lagna Taurus. The 9th shows the bachelor's degree, the 2nd the master's.
- Bachelor's: Mars aspects the 9th house and the 9th lord Saturn (Part 11). Saturn-Mars = civil engineering, architecture. She studied it in Mars daśā.
- Rahu is in the 12th (Aries, with Ketu): education abroad is possible. The nodes have only an argala on the 2nd.
- Mercury, lord of the coming pratyantara, is the 2nd lord. Applications and admission will fall in it — conducive.
- Jupiter (19° Scorpio) aspects the 2nd cusp (18°20' Gemini) at 209°: about 77%. He aspects Mercury (22° Cancer), 3° inside his 9th house: 97.5%. With both the 2nd house and the 2nd lord under his aspect, Jupiter can give a successful master's. Further study is a good idea.
But not civil engineering:
"The influence right now is not that of Saturn and Mars. Now the influence is that of Rahu and Ketu. They are the planets on the 10th house axis in Dasamsa. And even in D-24, Rahu is the 10th lord, showing some kind of professional education relating to Rahu-Ketu — machines, computers, electronics."
- Mercury, the 2nd lord of D-24: software, computers, mathematics, logic, analysis.
- The D-10 also shows that kind of career, not a civil engineering one.
The Mother (D12)
Her mother died in September, in Rahu-Rahu-Jupiter — the same period that gave the job. Read in D-12.
From the 4th from the Moon (the Moon is strong). The Moon is at 29°39' Pisces, so the mother's lagna starts at 29°39' Gemini:
- Rahu (26° Cancer) and Saturn are both in that 1st house. Two malefics on the mother's lagna.
- Saturn is its 8th lord. "Any malefic afflicting the 8th lord will become a māraka." Rahu afflicts both the 8th lord and the lagna, and aspects the 2nd.
- Jupiter is the 7th lord. "The 8th lord is a māraka only if he is badly placed. The 7th lord is always a māraka."
From the 4th from lagna (D-12 lagna 24° Sagittarius, 4th at 24° Pisces): Rahu is the 12th lord; Jupiter is the lagna lord in the 3rd, a māraka sthāna.
Rahu Daśā — Caution
- In the rāśi chart Rahu is the 7th lord on the cusp of the 8th house: a māraka. Check longevity first. If life is long he will not kill, but he can give accidents or a serious health problem.
- Rahu on the 8th cusp can also give occult knowledge and experiences. D-20 supports it: Rahu and Ketu are in the 9th (7th lord, a quadrant lord, in a trine), and the 8th lord Jupiter is exalted in the 12th, aspecting the 8th. Some spiritual progress in Rahu daśā.
- D-6: Rahu is in the 7th with Mars and Ketu, the 6th lords, but is himself the 9th lord. "Not that bad", but health may not be perfect in Rahu daśā.
- Remedy the teacher gives: worship Rahu with the Rahu mantra, or Durga Kavacham.
- No gaṇḍānta on lagna or lagna lord, so no other serious worry about health.
Marriage Year Analysis (Tithi Praveśa 2009–10)
Marriage is fixed for April 8, inside the year that began on July 17, 2009. Tithi Praveśa: lagna 22° Sagittarius. The lord of the year is Mars.
TP navāṁśa (Libra lagna):
- Venus, the lagna lord, is in the 9th and in the 7th from the Moon.
- Jupiter, the 3rd and 6th lord, is in the lagna sign but by house in the 12th — 6th lord in the 12th, a vipareeta rāja yoga.
TP rāśi:
- Vivāha saham is at about 18° Virgo. Venus, the kāraka, at 19° Taurus has a half (50%) aspect on it.
- Its lord Mercury is also the 7th lord.
- Sun 1°, Mercury 5°, Ketu 6½° Cancer. Mercury (7th lord) and Sun (9th lord) within 4° — a rāja yoga — and Ketu, taken as kāraka in place of Venus, 1½° from Mercury.
- By sign Cancer is the 8th. By house they are in the 7th: "Using Parashara's reckoning, from 22 degrees Gemini to 22 degrees Cancer is the 7th house."
- Mercury and Ketu are together in the TP navāṁśa also (Leo).
"This whole combination of 7th lord, 9th lord, kāraka Ketu is actually in the 7th house in Rasi. So that explains marriage. That is a very powerful factor."
Daśā in the annual chart on the marriage date: Venus daśā by Tithi Aṣṭottarī; Mercury daśā if standard Vimshottari is run on the Tithi Praveśa chart. Both fit.
Marriage in Rahu Daśā (D9)
In the navāṁśa (Cancer lagna) Rahu is the 8th lord in the 4th.
"The 8th lord shows anxiety, tensions, worries. The 4th house is the house of marital bliss, comfort. So it doesn't suggest a smooth and happy marriage."
- Some clashes, "some roller coaster ride", in Rahu daśā. Worship of Chandi or Durga helps.
D7 Saptāṁśa (Children)
D-7 lagna 24° Libra.
- The Moon and Saturn are both in Libra, but not close: the Moon is alone in the lagna house and Saturn falls in the 12th house. A close Moon-Saturn conjunction would not be good.
- The 5th is Aquarius: Rahu and Saturn are its lords.
- Venus, the lagna lord, is in Scorpio but by house in the 1st. Rahu, the 5th lord, is in Scorpio in the 2nd house. Not very close, but close enough — a rāja yoga between the 1st and 5th lords.
"Rahu daśā promises birth of good children. Rahu-Venus is a very good antardaśā for the birth of a child."
When: Rahu-Venus comes in 2022–23. The student found that late. Other periods that can give:
- Rahu-Ketu — Ketu is the dispositor of Rahu and Venus.
- Rahu-Saturn — Saturn is the other 5th lord (Rahu-Saturn-Saturn, -Ketu, -Venus).
- Rahu-Rahu-Venus is possible. Rahu-Mercury is unlikely.
Boy or girl:
- If Saturn gives the child: he is exalted in Libra, with the Moon (a girl) in an odd sign (a boy). 50-50.
- If Rahu gives it: he is debilitated, with Venus, in an even sign. Likely a girl. Since it is Rahu's daśā, probably Rahu gives it.
The child, with Rahu (25° Scorpio) as lagna and houses counted backwards:
- Mercury exalted in the 3rd (12° Virgo): good communication.
- Jupiter, the 9th and 12th lord, with Ketu in the 7th; Moon and Saturn in the 2nd; Sun in the 11th.
- Mars, the 8th lord, in the 8th: long life.
- Long-lived, spiritual, fortunate.
D20 Viṁśāṁśa (Spirituality)
D-20 lagna 0° Leo, so every planet is in the house its sign shows.
| Planet | Placement | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| Mars — 9th and 4th lord, exalted | 6th (Capricorn) | Natural malefic well placed; fighting strength. From the 9th he is its lord in the 10th: bold karma for dharma |
| Saturn — 7th lord, moolatrikona | 7th (Aquarius) | Śaśa Mahāpuruṣa yoga in D-20 |
| Jupiter — exalted | 12th (Cancer) | Aspects the 4th from the house of mokṣa |
| Venus + Moon | 4th (Scorpio), 27°13' and 29°25' | Within 2½°. The Moon is debilitated |
| Rahu, Ketu | 9th (Aries) | — |
The 4th house is the strength of this chart: its lord is exalted, and it holds Venus and the Moon.
"Always Venus-Moon conjunction is a very good conjunction. It gives abundance. And this happening in the 4th house of direction shows there is no confusion in spiritual matters. She will get direction very easily."
- Venus and Moon are the two kārakas of the 4th, of mental peace. Aspected by exalted Jupiter from the 12th (graha dṛṣṭi, and rāśi dṛṣṭi too): the mind will not be agitated or confused. It gets clearer in Venus and Moon periods.
- Venus, Moon and Jupiter are the main strengths; Mars and Saturn are fine as well.
Deity: the Ātmakāraka is the Moon. Venus, 2° behind her, is in the 12th from her and is also the 12th lord from her (Libra). Venus shows Lakshmi, or sāttvic forms of Devi — Lakshmi, Gayatri, Savitri.
Dṛg daśā: the one running is Scorpio's, with nothing of note. The next is read with Sagittarius as lagna in the rāśi chart: Jupiter with the Moon (Gajakesari) in the 5th, the mantra sthāna; Mars and Sun, two trine lords, in the 8th — good for spiritual experiences. "Next 8 years are, in my judgment, good for spiritual progress." (The recording is unclear on which sign's daśā this is.)
- A student asks whether house cusps are used here. No: Dṛg daśā, like Chara daśā, is a rāśi daśā. Take the whole sign. "Bhāvas do not have aspects. Only rāśis have aspects and planets have aspects."
Overall: "Spiritually and from the point of view of children, this is a very nice chart." Elsewhere it is above average, with some weaknesses and its own strengths.
The Match-Maker's Objection
The student who brought the chart had been told: lagna lord in the 12th and 7th lord in the 8th — and that it was good.
- Lagna lord in the 12th in general shows a giving, humble person, good for marriage. But here the lagna lord is the Sun; "Sun in the 12th would have destroyed the chart." By house he is in the 11th.
- Debilitated Mars is in the 12th. He is the 9th lord: flourishing abroad. Not bad.
- Moon and Jupiter are both in Aries, the 9th sign — a Gajakesari on paper. But Jupiter is in the 8th house and the two are far apart. "It's not there practically."
- The one concern is Rahu on the 8th cusp, whose daśā is running.
