What a spouse indicator actually is
Jyotiṣa does not read marriage from one place. It reads it from three, and the description is trusted where they agree: the navāṁśa (D9) 7th house, taken as the spouse's own lagna; the Upapada Lagna, which is the arudha of the 12th and shows the marriage as the world sees it; and the Dārakāraka, the planet at the lowest degree in the chart, which in Jaimini's scheme stands for the person you actually marry rather than for marriage in general.
All three are read from one chart — yours — which is why you need nobody else's birth details to begin. If you do have someone in mind, the two-chart check further down tests whether your indicators describe them and, separately, whether theirs describe you.
The three spouse indicators

Your 7th lord through the twelve houses
The lord of the 7th house is where a spouse reading starts. Its house placement is the single most quoted indicator in classical practice, and it is what the tool above reads first. These are the readings the engine itself gives, condensed.

A placement never stands alone. The same 7th lord reads differently when it is exalted, debilitated, combust or aspected by a malefic — which is why the tool reports the lord, its sign and what sits with it rather than a single verdict.
Planets on the Upapada Lagna
The Upapada is the arudha of the 12th house — the image of the marriage as other people see it. A planet sitting on it colours that image directly.

What a chart will not tell you
Most pages on this subject promise more than the method supports. Three things are left out here on purpose.
- Where your spouse will come from. The classical distance and direction rules were tested here against 22 charts with verified spouse birthplaces. They performed at chance, and on charts where both people were born in the same city they still returned a confident answer. They were taken out of the engine.
- What they will look like. No appearance rules are used. A chart reads temperament far better than it reads a face.
- Their name, or an exact age difference. Neither follows from the method. Saturn on the 7th indicates an older or more serious partner — a quality, not a number of years.

What is the Darakaraka?
In the Jaimini chara karaka scheme, the Darakaraka (DK) is the planet with the lowest ecliptic degree in your chart. It is the significator of the actual spouse — the specific person you marry, as distinct from Venus, which is the general significator of marriage. Its sign, placement and the planets with it describe the partner's nature and background.
Can astrology really identify the person I will marry?
It describes them, rather than names them — and it describes character, not a face. The D9 7th house, the Upapada Lagna and the Darakaraka together sketch the spouse's temperament, the work and values they bring, and the shape of the marriage. No appearance rules are used, because none of them hold up. When a real candidate's own chart matches those descriptions — and their marriage indicators point back at you — it is a strong sign the two charts are destined to meet.
Why is the check done in both directions?
A one-sided read is weak. This tool checks whether your spouse indicators describe them, and separately whether their spouse indicators describe you. A genuine destined match tends to show up from both sides — your D9 7th and Darakaraka fit them, and theirs fit you. Agreement in both directions is what gives the verdict weight.
Can I find my spouse indicator by date of birth alone?
Partly. The Dārakāraka is degree-based and usually holds with a date, because the planets move slowly enough. The navāṁśa 7th house and the Upapada Lagna both depend on the ascendant, which changes sign roughly every two hours — and the navāṁśa itself every thirteen minutes. Without a birth time those two layers are guesses, and they are the two that carry most of the description.
Who is my spouse according to my chart?
The chart describes a person; it does not name one. The navāṁśa 7th house gives their temperament and the inner texture of the marriage, the Upapada shows how the marriage appears from outside, and the Dārakāraka points at the individual rather than at marriage in general. Where the three agree, the description is firm. Where they disagree, an honest reading says so.
What is the difference between Venus and the Dārakāraka?
Venus is the natural significator of marriage itself for everyone, of either sex — the appetite for partnership and the timing of its arrival. The Dārakāraka is the chara karaka of the actual spouse: the planet at the lowest degree in your chart. Venus describes the institution; the Dārakāraka describes the person.
Does the birth time need to be exact?
Spouse analysis is Lagna- and Navāṁśa-based, so the birth time matters — the Navāṁśa Lagna changes roughly every 13 minutes, and the Upapada depends on the 12th house. A time accurate within a few minutes gives a reliable read; a rough time weakens the D9 and UL layers, though the Darakaraka (degree-based) stays stable.
