Example Chart (1989, Taurus Lagna Rectified): Sun+Ketu Gandanta in 4H (Leo), D24 Sun With Rahu-Ketu Aspecting 9H = Medicine Not Math (Sun-Rahu-Ketu Repeats D1/D24/D10), D10 Rahu in Own 2H Aspected by Sun = Surgery, Venus Lagna Lord Debilitated (Neecha Bhanga) = Average Career, Venus Dasha ~47 = Business
An undergraduate who left pre-med for math and biology: which suits him? Rasi has six planets on the 4th–10th axis, with the 4th lord Sun in gaṇḍānta half a degree from Ketu, yet sitting at the entry of his own house and separating from Ketu. The D-24 lagna is on a border; Saturn daśā gave top-of-class schooling, which fits Cancer (Saturn with lagna lord Moon, yogakāraka from the 4th), so the time moves from 11:37 to 11:36 PM. Taurus against Aries rasi lagna is settled by his speech and temperament and by the father seen in D-12. In D-24 Sun, 2nd lord with Rahu and Ketu, aspects the 9th of the bachelor's degree; in D-10 Rahu in his own 2nd house is aspected by Sun and Ketu from the 8th. The same Sun–Rahu–Ketu combination in three charts points to surgery, with math possible but not career-defining. Career is judged average (lagna lord Venus debilitated, Sun in gaṇḍānta), with business advised in Venus daśā from about 47. Remedies: no ruby, propitiate Sun, a diamond for Venus.
Key principle
Unless he is too bored with it, surgery is the right thing for him. Medicine is the right thing for him. He will be a pretty decent surgeon.
Example Chart
Example Chart — Education & Career Analysis
The Question
- A student's relative, an undergraduate. He started in pre-med, then moved to a double major in math and biology. He is very good at math. In school he was top of his class. He had wanted medicine but, as the student tells it, did not get into the course he wanted. He has turned away from religion.
- At 11:37 PM: lagna 1°31' Taurus, Moon 29°54' Aquarius. D-24 lagna changes 51 seconds earlier, so D-24 is on a border.
- Lagna is at the very start of Taurus, so in the rasi chart every planet is above it: houses and signs coincide. "Less complication." (Five minutes earlier it would not be so.)
- Lagna is not vargottama and the lagna lord is not in the 7th, so no conditional daśā applies; Vimshottari from Moon. Saturn daśā runs 1993–2012, through all of school and into college.
Rasi Chart
- Six planets on the 4th–10th axis, the axis of education and career:
- 4th (Leo): Ketu 1°54', Sun 2°27', Mars 16°, Mercury 27°43'
- 10th (Aquarius): Rahu 1°54', Moon 29°54'
- Jupiter in the 2nd (Gemini); Saturn in the 8th (Sagittarius); they aspect each other. Venus, lagna lord, debilitated in the 5th (Virgo).
- Sun, the 4th lord, is in gaṇḍānta (start of Leo), "even though not in deep gaṇḍānta". Ketu is in gaṇḍānta too, about half a degree from Sun. "Terrible combination."
- Mercury at the end of Leo is a couple of days from his exaltation sign; his uccha bala is nearly full. Strong.
- Three groups on the axis: Sun–Rahu–Ketu at the start of the signs, Moon–Mercury at the end, Mars alone in the middle.
Is the 4th house strong? Judge the house and the lord separately.
- The house: its own lord is in it; Mars, the lord's friend, is in it; the 5th lord Mercury is with the 4th lord. Reasonably strong.
- The lord: in gaṇḍānta and with Ketu. But lagna is at the start of Taurus and Sun at the start of Leo, so Sun sits at the entry of the 4th house.
"So house lord is right at the door of the house. He is not at some corner of the house. His influence on the house is very, very strong."
- Sun moves forward into the house and Ketu moves backward out of it. They are separating, so "the problem is over, basically".
- The gaṇḍānta may then show in some other 4th-house matter, such as the heart, not in education. For education, Sun's state in D-24 decides.
Rectification (D-24 — Siddhamsa)
At 11:37 PM the D-24 lagna is Leo; 51 seconds earlier it is Cancer. Test: Saturn daśā gave excellent schooling. Which lagna makes Saturn good?
| Leo D-24 lagna | Cancer D-24 lagna | |
|---|---|---|
| Saturn from lagna | 6th and 7th lord in the 12th with the 12th lord Moon: Vipareeta Raja Yoga, struggle first. Does not read like top of the class | 7th lord in lagna with lagna lord Moon: Raja Yoga, the better combination |
| 4th house (school) taken as lagna | Scorpio: Saturn is 3rd and 4th lord in the 9th. Nothing special | Libra: Saturn is the yogakāraka (4th and 5th lord) in the 10th, or the 9th by longitude. Well placed either way |
| 4th lord | — | Venus, lord of Libra, is in Capricorn on the same axis; Saturn is his dispositor |
- Cancer explains the schooling. Time moved a full minute, to 11:36 PM, "original time 11:37, changed based on D-24".
Could it be Aries lagna (11:31 PM)? D-24 would still be Cancer.
- Aries: 4th lord Moon in the bādhaka sthāna with Rahu; 2nd lord Venus debilitated and Jupiter (9th lord, kāraka of speech) in maraṇa kāraka sthāna in the 3rd — poor for speech. An Aries-lagna head is typically big and round.
- Taurus: Jupiter in the 2nd, in a sign of Mercury, and the 2nd lord Mercury strong — articulate, speaks nicely and clearly. The student confirms he is a good, clear speaker, determined and stubborn. "Very fixed, stubborn. That fits with Taurus more."
- A modern recorded time being wrong by five minutes is unlikely. "As long as we can explain things through Taurus, we should stick to Taurus."
- D-10 cannot decide it: the last daśāṁśa of an odd sign and the first of the next even sign are the same sign (Capricorn here). D-12 can.
D-12 (Dvadasamsa) — Checking the Father
- Last dvādaśāṁśa of Aries = Pisces; first of Taurus = Taurus. So D-12 lagna is Pisces or Taurus.
- The father: a chemical engineer with a business background, good at math, who has also taught.
- Arudha of the 9th: with Taurus D-12 lagna it falls in Virgo; with Pisces it falls in Taurus.
- Engineering shows either way: from Taurus, Mars and Rahu are in the 10th; from Virgo, Mars and Rahu are in the 6th, aspected by Sun.
- The teaching decides. From Virgo: Jupiter in lagna (respected, teacher-like), Mercury as lagna lord and 10th lord (intelligent, academic career), Venus aspecting the 10th. "Jupiter and Venus are the teachers."
- So Taurus rasi lagna stands.
D-24 — Bachelor's Education
Cancer lagna. Sun, Rahu and Ketu in Virgo; Moon and Saturn in Cancer; Venus in Capricorn; Mercury in Gemini; Mars in Leo.
- School is the 4th (Libra). The bachelor's degree is the 9th (Pisces). The master's is the 2nd (Leo).
- Saturn for the bachelor's: from Pisces he is 11th and 12th lord in the 5th. A functional malefic, mixed results. Not as smooth as school was.
- Strongest influence on the 9th: Sun, with Rahu and Ketu, aspects Pisces from Virgo (graha dṛṣṭi). Sun is the 4th lord in rasi, "naturally the controller of education", and here the 2nd lord. He links the 2nd (master's) and the 9th (bachelor's).
- Sun with Rahu and Ketu is an affliction, but it can show a good surgeon. Medicine and surgery are indicated, and that line is likely to carry through to a master's.
- Math: Ketu aspects the 9th; Mercury in Gemini has rasi dṛṣṭi and argala on it. Mercury is a decent planet here. But Mercury has no link to the 2nd house.
- On D-24 alone, "medicine is fine, math is fine".
The class counts five planets in dual signs and puts Saturn in a trine from Jupiter, i.e. Jupiter in Pisces. Jupiter is at 10°00' Gemini, exactly on an aṁśa border: the site's chart shows him in Aries in D-24, and in Libra (not Virgo) in D-12.
D-10 — Career
Lagna 12° Capricorn (it cannot be earlier; it may be a little later). Here the bhava rule matters: Mars, Mercury and Jupiter are below 12° and go back one house.
| Factor | Observation |
|---|---|
| Mars | Exalted in Capricorn, but by longitude in the 12th. Half a minute earlier in birth time he is in the 1st. Cannot be settled without career events. In the 1st he gives Ruchaka yoga; in the 12th he does not, but he is still exalted |
| Saturn (lagna lord) | 4th house (Aries) |
| Mercury (6th lord) | Taurus, a friend's sign; 4th house by longitude. Not particularly strong |
| Jupiter | Virgo; 8th house by longitude |
| Venus (10th lord) | 7th house (Cancer), not a friendly sign, close aspect on lagna. Some Venusian business. No link to the education seen in D-24 |
| Rahu (2nd lord) | In the 2nd (Aquarius), alone in his own sign. "The strongest house if you ask me" |
| Sun | With Ketu in the 8th (Leo), 8th lord in the 8th giving Sarala yoga; aspects Rahu in the 2nd. Afflicted, "not clean" |
| Moon (7th lord) | 11th house (Scorpio) |
- The 2nd house is resources, the 6th overcoming obstacles, the 10th accomplishment. For a surgeon doing sophisticated surgery the 2nd, the resources he works with, can count for more than the 6th and 10th. So Rahu in the 2nd may decide the career.
- The Sun–Rahu–Ketu combination repeats: on the 4th/10th in rasi, on the 9th in D-24, on the 2nd/8th in D-10.
- A student suggests Ketu for math. With Sun–Rahu–Ketu together you do not pick out Ketu and call it math; Mercury is more the kāraka of logic and analysis, and he is strong in D-24 but not in D-10. He can study math; it may not define his career.
Career Recommendation
"Unless he is too bored with it, surgery is the right thing for him. Medicine is the right thing for him. He will be a pretty decent surgeon."
- He will do well in education.
- Career: average. The lagna lord Venus is debilitated, though with neecha bhanga (Mercury in a kendra from lagna, among others). No planet stands out as powerful. Sun is in gaṇḍānta in rasi; in D-10 the Sun–Rahu–Ketu combination that shows the surgeon sits on the 2nd/8th axis and Sun is afflicted.
- "He will be an average surgeon. He will not be like a great big shot or famous guy; he will do okay."
"If at all he can somehow go back to medicine, medicine is the best for him."
Business in Venus Daśā
- D-10: Venus, 10th lord, in the 7th, aspecting lagna; the 7th lord Moon in the 11th. Good for money from business.
- Venus daśā starts at about 47. Mercury daśā is not really for business and Ketu daśā definitely not.
- Earn as a surgeon first, then start a business in things of Venus and Cancer: beauty goods, luxury goods, vehicles. Venus–Moon antardaśā is one such period.
Spiritual Potential
- Rasi: Saturn in the 8th, lagna lord in the 5th.
- D-20: the 8th house (Cancer) has its lord Moon, in maraṇa kāraka sthāna, aspected by Rahu, Ketu, Sun and Venus from Capricorn. A powerful combination on the 8th. There is potential.
- He is not religious now. The teacher expects a turn toward spirituality between 2012 and 2020, from a daśā with four planets in the 12th from it (the daśā's name is unclear on the recording).
Remedies
For the example chart of this class: Taurus lagna, the 4th lord Sun at the start of Leo with Ketu, the lagna lord Venus debilitated.
For Sun — in gaṇḍānta, weak, afflicted by Ketu:
| Remedy | Detail |
|---|---|
| Mantra | Savitṛ Gayatri; Aditya Hridayam; "Om Ghṛṇi Sūrya Āditya Om" |
| Fire | A homa, if he would do one. Fire is a small representation of Sun |
| Lamp | Light a lamp or candle and gaze at it |
| Morning sun | Surya namaskara, some exercise facing the sun |
- The mantra's grammar: most mantras put the deity in a case — to, for, of. "Hare Rama, Hare Krishna" is in the vocative (sambodhana): you call on the deity as someone apart from you. This mantra is in the plain nominative (prathamā vibhakti): it only declares "Sun".
- The lamp, for someone who will not chant:
"Just light a candle, a deepam, sit in front of the deepam and keep looking at it. That is strengthening the Sun inside you."
Stare at the flame as long as possible without blinking, and think of God in whatever terms he does these days.
No ruby. A student asks whether Sun is a functional benefic. Sun owns the 4th: for a natural malefic a kendra is a neutral house. He is neutral or malefic, not a benefic, and he is in gaṇḍānta.
"Angering somebody in gaṇḍānta by wearing a gem is not a great idea. So do not wear a gem; propitiate him."
Do not ask the one in gaṇḍānta to "come and sit on my lap".
Gomedha for Rahu? Rahu is 10th lord in the 10th, in rasi with Moon but at the opposite end of the sign. A natural malefic owning a kendra is neutral. "I wouldn't really say don't wear it, but I wouldn't really recommend" it.
Diamond for Venus: yes. The chart has two major weaknesses: Sun in gaṇḍānta (he calls Sun the ātmakāraka; by degrees the chara ātmakāraka in the cast chart is Moon) and the lagna lord debilitated. The second can be addressed with a gem. Neecha bhanga is there, but the overall personality is weak and a diamond strengthens it. It may not do much for education.
