Engineering Dropout (Taurus Lagna 1992): D1 4L Sun in 12H Enemy Sign = Weak Education Base; D24 Mercury-Sun AD = Dropout (Sun = 7L Maraka from 9H, Enemy of 9L Saturn); D10 Venus+Mercury Rajyoga in 10H = Entertainment Career (Fame 2027-2047 Venus Dasha); D20 Jupiter Exalted+9L Venus in 8H = Does Not Follow Customs; Lakshmi Stotram 8x + Vishnu Sahasranama Daily

A school topper fails every subject in first-year engineering and drops out; the parents ask whether to send him back. In the rāśi chart the 4th lord Sun is in the 12th in his worst enemy’s sign, so education is weak, while 10th lord Saturn in own sign in the 9th keeps the career sound. The D-24 lagna is fixed as Gemini from the events: he entered in Mercury–Venus–Mercury and dropped out in Mercury–Sun, the Sun being the 7th lord from the 9th house, inimical to 9th lord Saturn, and a maraka from A9. In D-10 the 2nd lord Mercury and the exalted lagna-and-6th lord Venus sit together in the 10th in Īśāna aṁśa, so the career comes from them — entertainment, media, perhaps religious media — with fame in Venus daśā, 2027–2047. Sun–Saturn in D-10 show activism without power; the remedy is Lakṣmī stotra and Viṣṇu Sahasranāma daily. The teacher counts houses from the lagna degree here, so the site’s whole-sign chart shows several of these planets one house later.

Key principle

There is a consonance between the 3 houses that show career. So clearly it has to be given by Venus and Mercury, not Saturn and Rahu. Career will be in entertainment, some field relating to entertainment, and he will be known for political activism later in life.

May 27, 1992 · 6:00 AM IST · India (78°03′E, 15°50′N), as read out in class · lagna 14°51′ Taurus
Lagna 14°51′ Taurus, as in class. The teacher counts houses from the lagna degree; this chart draws whole signs, so planets behind the lagna degree show one house later here. D-1: 4th lord Sun, with Venus and Mercury, in Taurus (his 12th; 1st here); 10th lord Saturn in Capricorn, the 9th. D-24: Gemini lagna; Sun exalted in Aries — 3rd from the 9th house Aquarius, whose lord Saturn is his enemy; Mercury in Sagittarius has argala on the 9th. Moon in Capricorn; the class has Rahu–Ketu there with him, this chart puts the nodes one sign on, in Aquarius. D-10: Taurus lagna; Venus exalted and Mercury debilitated together in Pisces (his 10th; 11th here); Sun and Saturn together in Taurus (his 12th; 1st here); Rahu in Aquarius (his 9th; 10th here); Jupiter in the 7th. D-20: Virgo lagna; Jupiter exalted in Cancer opposite Moon; 9th lord Venus in Aries, the 8th.

Case Study — Engineering Dropout: Education in D-24, Career in D-10

The Question

  • Male, born 27 May 1992, 6:00 AM (believed accurate), India, 5h30m east of GMT.
  • Topper in his school till the 10th standard. Did not do well in the 11th and 12th.
  • Joined engineering (computer science) in 2009 at an expensive private college. Failed all subjects in the first year and dropped out. He wants to do nothing.
  • The parents ask: send him back to engineering, or settle him in another line? And is there any prayer he can do?

How to Read the House Numbers in This Case

The teacher gives lagna 14°51′ Taurus and Moon 8°36′ Pisces. The site's chart reproduces this lagna.

In this case he counts each house as 30° starting from the lagna degree. A planet in the lagna sign at a lower degree than the lagna is in the 12th. His house numbers below follow that count and check out against the cast chart in D-1, D-10, D-20 and D-24. The site draws whole-sign houses, so those planets appear one house later there. Each such case is marked.

Rāśi Chart

  • 4th house = education. 4th lord Sun is in the 12th — his maraṇa-kāraka sthāna — and in Venus's sign, the sign of his worst enemy (adhi-śatru). (Whole-sign: Sun at 12° Taurus is in the lagna sign, behind the lagna degree.)
  • So the planet showing education is weak.
  • 10th lord Saturn is in the 9th in own sign (Capricorn). He is the yogakaraka.

"His career will be fine. Education seems bad, but career will be fine."

  • Venus is the lagna lord. He too is in the 12th (whole-sign: in Taurus, behind the lagna degree). Even so he is the lagna lord: Venus daśā is the good daśā for him.

Fixing the Lagna with D-24

  • To judge the career, D-10 must be right. At 14°51′ Taurus the lagna is 9′ short of 15°, where the D-10 lagna changes.
  • The D-24 lagna changes every four minutes or so: here it would differ 4m24s earlier or 38s later. A 6:01 birth gets rounded to 6:00.
  • So he tests the D-24 lagna against the known events. Candidates: Taurus (earlier), Gemini (time as given), Cancer (later). He sets Taurus aside first — that would need a larger error — and then finds it does not fit either.

Events:

  • Mercury daśā, Venus antardaśā, Mercury pratyantardaśā (26 July – 20 December 2009): entered the bachelor's course.
  • Rest of Venus antardaśā: still enrolled, doing badly from a couple of months in.
  • Sun antardaśā: dropped out.

"Venus should show some problem, Sun should show big problem."

Entry in Mercury pratyantar (Gemini D-24 lagna): Mercury is lagna lord and has argala on the 9th house (he is in Sagittarius, the 11th from Aquarius). That is enough of a link to bachelor's education. Mercury also stands for computer science.

Dropout in Sun antardaśā — judge from the 9th house, the bachelor's education. A student looks at the 2nd lord; the teacher: "Why are you looking at second lord? Look at the 9th house."

D-24 lagna9th houseSun from the 9thVerdict
GeminiAquarius7th lord in the 3rd; inimical to 9th lord SaturnA very strong maraka — fits
CancerPisces6th lord in the 2ndMakes sense, less so
TaurusCapricorn8th lord, exaltedTrouble, but continuation — does not fit

From A9 — the tangible side: going to such-and-such college, doing such-and-such degree.

  • With the Gemini lagna the teacher has A9 in Libra.
  • From Libra the Sun is the bādhaka lord, exalted, in the 7th — a maraka sthāna. He can give instability, even a break.
  • Libra is also not a friendly sign for the Sun.
  • So although the Sun is exalted and in the 11th from lagna, from the 9th and from A9 he ends the education.

Result: D-24 lagna is Gemini. The birth time stands, within a minute or so, and the rāśi lagna is below 15° Taurus.

Will the Education Pick Up?

Asked at the end of the class.

  • Sun antardaśā is still running. Sun is maraka for the 9th house and for A9. "There is no chance of continuing."
  • Moon antardaśā, next: from the 9th house Moon is the 6th lord in the 12th (Capricorn), with Rahu–Ketu. He is eclipsed. From A9 he is otherwise fine, but still eclipsed.
  • Closeness: Moon at 26°, the nodes at 23°. Very close. "Moon is badly eclipsed."
  • The next antardaśā is probably even worse than the current one for education.
  • Mars after that is "okay… actually Mars is also problematic, but let us not go that far."
  • Until May 2012 things are bad.

"It's not worth continuing this education… Instead of continuing the studies, it is better to do something else."

(The site's D-24 puts Rahu and Ketu in Aquarius, the next sign, not in Capricorn with the Moon. The teacher's node is about a degree earlier.)

D-10 — What the Chart Shows Against a Smooth Career

D-10 lagna is at the end of Taurus.

  • 10th lord Saturn is in the 12th — loss, giving, compromises — with the Sun, his enemy. The two are very close. Sun in the 12th is in his maraṇa-kāraka sthāna. (Whole-sign: both in Taurus, the lagna sign.)
  • Rahu, the other 10th lord (Aquarius), is in the 9th. A student says the 10th lord in the 9th is good. The teacher: Rahu in the 9th is in his maraṇa-kāraka sthāna, so there is a bad side too. (Whole-sign: Rahu in Aquarius, the 10th.)
  • "There is a lot of maraṇa-kāraka sthāna influence on career." Some instability. "This is not a smooth chart."
  • Business? 7th lord Mars is not well placed. Jupiter is in the 7th, but he is the 8th lord — a maraka. No success in business shown.

D-10 — Venus and Mercury Give the Career

  • Venus = lagna lord and 6th lord, exalted in Pisces.
  • Mercury = 2nd lord and 5th lord, debilitated in Pisces.
  • Both are in the 10th house. (Whole-sign: Pisces, the 11th.)
  • Lagna lord + 5th lord = rāja yoga, formed in the 10th.

Why these two and not Saturn or Rahu:

  • 2, 6, 10 are the artha trikonas. They show the career.
  • 2nd lord and 6th lord are together in the 10th.

"There is a consonance between the 3 houses that show career. So clearly it has to be given by Venus and Mercury, not Saturn and Rahu."

  • Venus is the stronger, so the career is Venusian with some Mercurian influence.

What kind of work:

  • Venus alone could be a managerial, project-management line.
  • Īśāna aṁśa: both Venus and Mercury are in Īśāna aṁśa of the D-10. Īśāna is dharma — a career connected with religion is one possibility.
  • Entertainment: exalted Venus as lagna lord shows entertainment. Mercury shows journalism. Together: entertainment-related journalism, TV, a film crew, cable-channel shows, writing.
  • Rahu: high technology — or the underworld, cheating, unconventional work. Set aside. Rahu is also the planet of illusion: "The whole TV or movie is an illusion."
  • A student who knows the family: he is a filmy kind of boy, he likes film stars. The teacher: liking is one thing, skill another — but if he develops a skill in those lines, it may work well.
  • If not the writing side, then the technical side of entertainment — audio and the like — using his electronics and computer background.

"Some kind of entertainment area seems to be very auspicious for him."

  • If the career is in entertainment and he is in computer science, he probably will not finish the degree.

Timing:

  • Mercury daśā is running. Mercury is the debilitated 5th lord: weak pūrva-puṇya, hence the trouble. The teacher allows that Mercury can still give some success in a later sub-period.
  • Ketu daśā next: okay, not great. Ketu is the 7th lord in the 3rd — he may go independent, some business. (Whole-sign: Ketu in Leo, the 4th.)
  • Venus daśā: November 2027 – November 2047, age 35 to 55. Venus is good in both rāśi and daśāṁśa.

"This person has a chance of being famous because lagna lord and 6th lord are together… and lagna lord is exalted. So there is a chance of fame, and his fame will come in Venus dasha."

  • Until 2027 things are slow. He has to build the career.
  • Advice to the parents: have a calm talk with him. Find out what he is interested in — singing, films, music. It is worth it; in the end he will be reasonably famous.

D-10 — Sun and Saturn Together: Activism, Not Power

  • Sun–Saturn together in the chart of career shows political activity. Saturn is the 9th lord, dharma — the sense of right and wrong. Someone who stands for causes and goes to the streets.
  • Power? Unlikely. Sun is in maraṇa-kāraka sthāna. No planet is in Indra aṁśa.
  • Sun is in Vāyu aṁśa. Vāyu is strength; social activists have planets in Vāyu. Saturn is in Agni aṁśa. Neither shows power.

"Don't suggest that as a career. That's not a career. Career will be in entertainment… and he will be known for political activism later in life."

D-20 — Will He Turn Spiritual?

A student notes the 12th house is strong in the rāśi chart and that the boy has bad habits.

  • Bad habits do not decide it. Smoking and drink are terrible, but they are easier to give up than pride, lust or jealousy. "The real enemies are the ones inside." People who smoked or drank have left it and become great saints. Do not hold it against the person.

D-20, Virgo lagna:

  • Sun and Saturn in the 11th. (Whole-sign: Leo, the 12th.)
  • Jupiter exalted — good. He aspects the 5th: some pūrva-puṇya that will be triggered at the right time.
  • Venus, the 9th lord, is in the 8th: irreligious, or does not follow customs and does not like them.
  • Lagna lord Mercury is in the 7th. (Whole-sign: Aries, the 8th.)
  • Gajakesari yoga: Moon and Jupiter are opposite each other at 22° and 28° — reasonably close. Moon is in the 4th. (Whole-sign: Capricorn, the 5th.)

"This is basically a reasonably spiritual person, nothing great."

  • Do not conclude from a strong 12th in the rāśi chart that he will become spiritual later.
  • A student ties it to the Īśāna aṁśa: perhaps religious movies or religious serials. The teacher accepts that as something to suggest.

Remedy

  • Venus is the biggest benefic in this chart, in rāśi and in daśāṁśa → Lakṣmī. Read the Lakṣmī stotra as many times as you can.
  • Mercury, the lord of pūrva-puṇya, is badly placed in rāśi and debilitated in daśāṁśa, and his daśā is running. "Whatever is happening right now is under Mercury's influence." Mercury is Viṣṇu → Viṣṇu Sahasranāma.
  • Daily: Lakṣmī stotra 8 times, or Viṣṇu Sahasranāma once — or both. Once he is used to it, both take 20–25 minutes.

"Irrespective of whether they want him to continue his studies or not, he should do Lakshmi and Vishnu worship."
