Example Chart (1987) Virgo Lagna Rectification: D24 Taurus Lagna=Sun in 9H=Medicine+Mercury-Saturn Parivartana=High Intelligence; 6L Venus+Mars(Quarrel Karka)=Rough Patch 2008-10; KEY: Ketu Gives Results by HOUSE Occupied(More Than Owned)=Ketu in 8H=Career Delays; Venus Dasha 2015=Exalted+Well Placed From Lagna, Sun and Moon=Excellent 20-Year Career
A medical graduate (born 1987) has been refused by five US universities and asks whether to keep trying or go home. His given time, 11:24 AM, puts the rāśi lagna on the Virgo–Libra border. The teacher settles Virgo from a lean Vāta build and fast, fluent speech, then moves the time to 11:18:30 so that D-24 has Taurus rising: Sun in the 9th for medicine, a 5th–10th lord exchange between Mercury and Saturn for intelligence, and 6th lord Venus with Mars explaining the fights with professors in Rahu–Venus (2008–10). In D-10, Ketu is the 10th lord but sits in the 8th, and Ketu gives the result of the house he occupies, so the career waits for the 20-year Venus daśā from 2015. D-24 says the present is for study, with a compromise on the choice of university.
Key principle
Though he is the 10th lord, Ketu gives results more based on the house he occupies than the house he owns. So being in the 8th house, he gives only delay and setbacks and anxiety relating to career.
Example Chart
First Example — A Medical Graduate Looking for a Seat in the US (1987)
- Male, born 26 July 1987 in India.
- Time history: the family first gave about 11:50–11:52 AM. A new time, 11:24 AM, came later and was "supposed to be accurate", with a doubt of a minute (11:23).
- The class had seen this chart a few months earlier and rectified it on D-24 and medical education alone, the only event then known.
- Known facts: MBBS in India, finished June–July 2010. A top student through school, entered a good medical college on a high rank. Came to the US some time in 2011. Has written all three licensing steps and now needs a university seat (a paid J-1 or H-1 position) to study cardiology.
- The trigger for the question: he interviewed at five universities and has just heard that none accepted him. He is frightened. Should he keep trying or go back to India and work there?
- Body and temperament, from a student who knows him: 5'11", very slender, talks very fast, grasps things quickly, communicates very well, analytical and logical, "has his way around people" but not what you would call diplomatic. One younger sister, no miscarriage in between.
At 11:24 AM the teacher's chart has the rāśi lagna on the Virgo–Libra border: 11 seconds earlier it changes. D-24 changes within seconds too.
"It's on the border basically. But the thing is, we are in the ballpark. We are in the ballpark, then we can try to do something."
Rāśi Lagna — Libra or Virgo?
The teacher sets the divisional charts aside and asks one question first: does Tulā make more sense, or Kanyā? Is he analytical and intelligent, or diplomatic?
If the lagna were Libra
- The 2nd house, Scorpio, holds Saturn (Manda).
- The 2nd lord Mars is in Cancer, the 10th. The 2nd lord in the 10th is in a trine from his own house, which is good. But he is debilitated there.
- Neither Mercury nor Jupiter has anything to do with the 2nd house, and they are the ones who give power of expression.
- Saturn in the 2nd and a debilitated 2nd lord: "both the ways it is not really that conducive to being a good speaker."
- Body: lagna lord Venus is a watery planet in Cancer, a jala rāśi, and Jupiter aspects the lagna (graha dṛṣṭi, 7th from Aries). That gives a Kapha person, slightly stout and well built. The native is lean and tall.
If the lagna is Virgo
- Kanyā people are smart, intelligent and analytical. Mercury is well placed (own sign Gemini, 10th), so Mercurian traits dominate: understanding anybody, getting along with anybody, intelligence, communication.
- The 2nd lord Venus is in Cancer, a quadrant from his own sign Libra, in a fruitful sign. Not a friend's sign or exaltation, but not debilitated like Mars.
- Jupiter, at the beginning of Aries, throws a very close 7th aspect on the 2nd house.
- Body: Ketu is in the lagna (Pitta or Vāta) and Rahu aspects it (Vāta). The lagna lord Mercury is tridoṣa, but in his own sign in a vāyu rāśi he brings out Vāta. A Vāta build is lean and tall.
Conclusion: Virgo. The 11:24 time is off, and the lagna has to go back.
Cross-Checks in D-4 and D-3
The teacher goes to D-4 before D-24, "because D-24 will change every 3 minutes or so."
D-4
- Start of Libra gives D-4 lagna Libra. End of Virgo gives D-4 lagna Gemini (the 10th from Virgo).
- He came to the US in 2011. In D-4 Vimśottarī, Saturn daśā was running. The antardaśā is not relied on; only the mahādaśā is used.
- From Gemini: Saturn is the 9th lord in the 12th house (Taurus). Going to a faraway place.
- From Libra: Saturn is the yogakāraka in the 8th house. Some auspicious instability is possible, but nothing that clearly says abroad.
- "Gemini is showing more clearly going to a faraway place."
D-3 — no help
- The drekkāṇa lagna is either Libra (first drekkāṇa of Libra) or Taurus (last drekkāṇa of Virgo).
- From Libra the 3rd is Sagittarius, lord Jupiter in Aries, which could suggest a male sibling. But the teacher will not use it:
"We can't really be so sure with the drekkāṇa, unlike in saptāṁśa. That principle of finding the gender doesn't really work well."
- From Taurus, an even sign, the 3rd is counted backwards and is Pisces, again Jupiter's.
- The younger sibling is shown by Jupiter either way. Nothing else is known about the sister, so D-3 cannot separate the two lagnas.
D-24 Rectification — Which Lagna Shows a Brilliant Medical Student?
On the border the D-24 lagna jumps: the end of Virgo gives Gemini, the start of Libra gives Leo. There is a window of about four minutes on each side. Bachelor's education is the 9th house of D-24.
Placements on the teacher's screen in D-24: Moon in Taurus (exalted), Rahu in Gemini, Venus, Mars and Saturn in Virgo (Venus debilitated and far from the other two), Sun and Jupiter in Capricorn (Jupiter debilitated), Mercury in Aquarius.
Leo lagna (11:24)
- The 9th house, Aries, is empty and aspected only by its lord. The 9th lord Mars is in Virgo with Venus and Saturn. Mars can show medicine but would sooner show engineering. "You can make some case."
- Intelligence: lagna lord Sun and 5th lord Jupiter are together, a rāja yoga, but in the 6th house, with Jupiter debilitated in an inimical sign. A lucky person; how intelligent is debatable.
Gemini lagna
- Lagna lord Mercury is in the 9th and the 9th lord Rahu is in the lagna. An exchange between friends: Lakṣmī yoga, fortunate in learning.
- Mercury also exchanges with Saturn (4th and 9th lords). The lagna lord sits in two exchange rāja yogas.
- The 5th lord Venus is debilitated, but in a quadrant (the 4th), not in a dusthāna, and with the 9th lord Saturn. Mars afflicts, but Venus is far from Mars and Saturn, so neither the affliction nor the yoga with Saturn is strong.
- A Mercury-ruled, very strong lagna: smart, good memory, good analysis. Better than Leo for intelligence.
- But medicine? The 9th holds Mercury; its lords are Saturn and Rahu. Medicine is given by the Sun and the Moon. Mars can make a surgeon. Neither luminary touches the 9th house here.
Taurus lagna (11:18:30)
So the teacher tries one lagna further back. 11:20 and 11:19 are not enough; 11:18 brings Taurus.
- The lagna contains an exalted planet (Moon).
- The lagna lord Venus, though debilitated, is in the 5th house of intelligence.
- The 5th lord Mercury is in a friendly sign in a quadrant (the 10th) and exchanges with the 10th lord Saturn, who is in the 5th. The 5th house holds rāja yogas between the lagna lord, the 9th lord, the 10th lord and the 7th lord. "Basically very intelligent, very intelligent person."
- The 9th lord Saturn is with Venus and Mars, but the 9th house itself holds the Sun. Debilitated Jupiter is there too, a malefic for this lagna, but the Sun is closer to the cusp and is the dominant influence. He is a quadrant lord in a trine, well placed though in a difficult sign.
"So this can show a doctor, Sun's influence on the 9th house."
The rāśi lagna, the D-4 lagna and the daśās do not change by going back this far.
The test: the rough patch of 2008–2010
Asked for one more fact, the student supplies it. In the last two years of MBBS the native had serious trouble with professors and classmates, with a lot of politics against him. At one point the family thought he would give up. He did not.
D-24 Vimśottarī then: Rahu–Venus.
- Venus is the lagna lord, but also the 6th lord.
- The 6th house is empty and nobody aspects it, so the 6th lord has to deliver any quarrels.
- Venus is with Mars, the kāraka of quarrels and fights (some distance apart, but together). The lord of the house with its kāraka is doubly qualified.
- Venus is also the lagna lord and sits in several yogas, so he will not make the native give up. "Had he just been the 6th lord, maybe it would have been different."
- Take the 9th house, Capricorn, as the lagna of the bachelor's degree. The Sun, its 8th lord, is in it: tension, political trouble with administrators. Jupiter, its 3rd and 12th lord, is there too. Sun and Jupiter are the people with power and the people with knowledge, and both are bad lords for Capricorn. Two malefics afflict that lagna.
- Under the Gemini lagna the 9th held only Mercury, its own 5th lord (and 8th lord): "relatively cleaner". It would not show this.
Rectified time: 11:18:30 AM.
On the site: the rāśi lagna is Virgo and the D-4 lagna Gemini, as in class. The D-24 lagna shows Gemini at this time, not Taurus, and Sun, Jupiter, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn and Rahu fall in other D-24 signs than the teacher's (Surya Siddhanta positions). Read this part from the notes, not from the D-24 drawn on the page.
D-10 — When Does the Career Start?
The question is about career. The D-10 lagna depends only on the rāśi rectification: Aquarius rises, with room of 7.5 minutes backwards and 5.5 minutes forwards. A firm D-24 only adds confidence about which half of the daśāṁśa the lagna is in.
Ketu daśā (running, about three more years)
- Ketu is the 10th lord, but he is in the 8th house. The teacher checks the longitudes: lagna at 17° Aquarius, Ketu at 22° Virgo. He is squarely in the 8th.
- Not a planet for a flying start. He can delay the career or break it.
"Though he is the 10th lord, Ketu gives results more based on the house he occupies than the house he owns. So being in the 8th house, he gives only delay and setbacks and anxiety relating to career."
- Ketu is with Mars, the 3rd and 10th lord, in the 8th: many breaks, many changes, short-term and temporary positions. No stable good period.
- "It is possible that career may not even start during this time." The teacher expects him to study now and start working only after 2015.
Venus daśā (2015–2035)
- From the lagna: Venus is the yogakāraka, the 9th lord, with the lagna lord.
- From the Sun: Venus is the lagna lord, exalted in the 11th house, with the 10th lord.
- From the Moon: Venus is the 4th and 11th lord, exalted in the 9th house.
- Exalted, and well placed or a benefic from each reference. A very good career daśā.
- 2015 to 2035 is roughly age 30 to 50, "the crux of your career", and it runs under a great daśā.
"He will definitely have a successful career, and he should basically build it in the next 3–4 years. Don't rush into career."
On the site: the D-10 lagna is Aquarius and Venus is exalted in Pisces, Mars in Virgo (8th), Moon in Cancer, as in class. The site puts Ketu in Leo (class: Virgo, 8th), the Sun in Gemini (class: Taurus) and both Saturn and Rahu in Aquarius, so the "9th lord with lagna lord" and "with the 10th lord from the Sun" statements do not show on the page.
D-24 — Will He Get the Master's Seat?
A doctor from India cannot practise directly in the US; he must study there first. So the teacher reads the master's degree, the 2nd house of D-24 (Gemini from the rectified Taurus lagna).
D-24 Vimśottarī now: Rahu–Moon, then Rahu–Mars, then Jupiter mahādaśā.
- Rahu is in the 2nd house. The daśā supports master's studies.
- Moon is the 3rd lord in the lagna. With the 2nd house as lagna he is its 2nd lord, exalted in the 12th: foreign travel for the master's degree, and an exalted planet delivers. He is also in a quadrant from Mercury, the lord of the 2nd. Supportive, the more so now that the native is abroad.
- Mars, from the 2nd house, is the 6th and 11th lord in the 4th, afflicting a quadrant. Obstacles to the master's degree at the end of 2012 or in 2013.
- Jupiter is a debilitated malefic, which is good. But from the 2nd house he is the 7th lord in the 8th, a clear māraka. He ends the master's education, by stopping it or by completing it. Most likely in Jupiter–Jupiter, certainly within Jupiter mahādaśā.
Comparing D-10 with D-24: "This time seems more conducive to studies than to job. So even if he does some kind of work, it will be related to the studies."
Why a compromise is needed
- Moon and Mars are not the best antardaśās for a master's degree. "It's not like Mercury antardaśā or Venus antardaśā. They are okay."
- From the 2nd house, the Moon is in the 12th, the house of compromise.
"Instead of trying all hi-fi universities, maybe he can set the bar a little low and try something else also as a backup plan. So keep trying."
On the site: these placements are the teacher's (see Part 4); the D-24 on the page differs.
