Example Chart (1992, Aquarius Lagna) — Pilot vs FBI Analysis (Amsa-Based), Ketu the 6th Lord in Yama Amsa = Intelligence Work, D24 Humanities/Law & Sadhaka Phase 2015-23

Example Chart — Pilot or FBI Agent? Education and a Spiritual Period (1992)

A student brought his teenage son's chart. It had been looked at three or four months earlier; then the suggestions were surgery or medicine (Mars with Sun) or an automobile line (Mars in the 6th of the Daśāṁśa — the boy likes futuristic cars). Now the boy has narrowed it to two things: pilot, or FBI agent. The questions: which of the two, what to study, and will he finish his degrees.

The Daśāṁśa (D-10)

Gemini lagna.

• 6th house (Scorpio): Mars in his own sign — 6th lord in the 6th. A10 is in the 6th.
• 10th house (Pisces): Venus exalted, the 5th lord — but in an inimical sign, and the 10th lord Jupiter is debilitated in the 8th (Capricorn).
• "Lord of a house being in the same house is always really powerful." If Jupiter were strong the 10th could have dominated. He is not. A10 in the 6th is sufficient to tie the 6th to career; Mars's partial aspect on the 10th is secondary.
• Conclusion: "The career will be given by the 6th house in this case, not the 10th house. 10th house results may be given briefly sometime in his life." Mars defines the career.

Pilot

• The father thought pilot reasonable (Mars; Scorpio as Ketu's house; Ketu for heights). The teacher: "I would have thought otherwise in this chart."
• Tradition gives the pilot to the Sun: Sun shows birds, a pilot flies. The teacher has seen very few pilots' charts; the one he cites, Rajiv Gandhi, has Sun in the 10th of the Daśāṁśa.
• His objection: there were no pilots until a few decades ago, so the rule was coined recently from a couple of charts. And it maps a symbol, not a function — like the book that said a woman became Miss Universe and not Miss World because she ran Jupiter daśā and Jupiter means "universe".
• "Do we look at symbolism or do we look at the actual functionality of the planet?" He holds no strong opinion either way, but prefers function.
• Function of a pilot: a driver, but with much technical training, taking in a lot of information at once, with quick instincts and right judgment. The training starts with mechanical engineering. That gives Mars mainly, with Mercury — "Mars is an important planet for a pilot rather than Sun."
• For pilot in this chart: Mars strong in the 6th with A10; Venus — kāraka of expensive vehicles — in the 10th; the 6th is also Ketu's sign and Ketu stands for heights ("a secondary, secondary thing"). So pilot is a possibility.

FBI Agent

The teacher's caveat: "I have not seen any CIA operative's chart. This is just speculation based on intuition and logic."

• Undercover operations are always Rāhu–Ketu. Rāhu is the head; Ketu is headless — Ketu is the operative. The 6th house here is Ketu's sign.
• Spy work also needs analysis and logic — Mercury.
• It depends on the job:
  • A field operative who infiltrates a society must mix with people and cultivate relationships: the 7th house, Moon and Venus. Analysis is secondary for him.
  • An investigator who analyses data and acts on it: Venus matters little. Mars gives instinct and intuition, but Mercury is the planet.
• In this D-10: Mercury is the lagna lord, exalted in the 4th (Virgo), aspecting the 10th house — by graha dṛṣṭi (7th aspect) and by rāśi dṛṣṭi.

The Amśas Decide

The ten parts of each sign in the D-10 are ruled by the dikpālas. The teacher: "Deity is important."

(The transcript's "Mrityu amsa" is Nirṛti amśa mis-heard; the teacher says "Nirriti amsa" when he comes to Mercury daśā. The four amśas above follow from the planets' degrees.)

• Yama amśa fits an operative: "You don't hate somebody; you go and kill somebody because that is your job… Whatever you do, you are doing impassionately, as your job."
• Ketu is not in the 6th house of this D-10. He is the 6th lord (Scorpio), placed in the 3rd.
• "After looking at the amśas, does pilot seem like a strong possibility? Probably not pilot. But FBI agent is a good possibility."

How the Career Would Run (Viṁśottarī)

At the time of the class he is in Jupiter daśā. His career starts in Saturn daśā.

Saturn daśā — ground-level operative:

• Saturn is the 8th and 9th lord, in Yama amśa: a low-level, routine job done mechanically.
• He is in trine to Ketu (Aries–Leo), is lord of A6, and has 2nd-house argala on the 10th (Aries is the 2nd from Pisces). So he can shape the career.
• As 9th lord he gives fortune and big contacts. As 8th lord placed in A8 he gives instability: "He moves between projects, he moves between towns, he moves between identities."
• A student pointed out Saturn is retrograde in his debilitation sign. The teacher: "It's a good yoga. A debilitated planet in retrogression is always good. It's like Nīcabhaṅga Rāja Yoga." Well placed — but Yama amśa keeps him from being a leader.

Mercury daśā — from about age 45, through the 50s:

• Mercury is in a kendra (the 4th), lagna lord aspecting the 10th, in Nirṛti amśa, with Māndi, in the Ārūḍha Lagna. (AL in Virgo checks by hand: lagna lord in the 4th, the count falls on the 7th, so it moves to the 10th from there.)
• "He will be a leader at that time. He will be a big analyst." Promoted, in a central office, in the analysis wing, no longer travelling.

"Looking at the entire Dasamsa, not just one house, this is not a bad career choice at all. This is a better choice than pilot."

Education — Rectifying the Siddhāṁśa (D-24)

The father reported that studies had gone badly for about two years, in the 10th class, and that the boy was now getting back on track. Viṁśottarī: Jupiter–Mercury ran from January 2007 to about June 2009.

Rāśi chart first — Mercury antardaśā:

• Mercury is the 8th lord in the 6th (Cancer), in A4 — spoiling mental happiness.
• From daśā lord Jupiter (Leo) he is the 2nd and 11th lord, a functional malefic, in the 12th: losses, instability.
• But a rāśi-chart result could be in any area of life. "If education is giving trouble, it is likely that the Siddhāṁśa has a problem."

D-24 as cast (Gemini lagna) does not explain it:

• Mercury is the lagna lord in the 5th. From Jupiter (Virgo) he is lagna lord and 10th lord in the 2nd. "It shouldn't be that bad."

Previous sign (Taurus lagna) is worse as an explanation:

• Mercury would be 2nd and 5th lord in the 6th — a functional benefic; the 6th suits Mercury; 5th lord in the 6th is Dhīmanta Yoga. "I wouldn't have suspected problems."

Next sign (Cancer lagna) fits:

• Mercury becomes the 3rd and 12th lord in the 4th (Libra), and sits in A8.
• "3rd lord in the 4th is always bad for education. It tries to give loss of education, some compromise in the education — doesn't want to study." The 12th lord from lagna in the 4th also wants to break it.
• "From what you are saying, it was a bad antardaśā. And that makes sense if I take Cancer lagna in Siddhāṁśa. So I will take Cancer lagna."

Cancer needs the lagna at 13°45' Aquarius or later — a birth time about two and a half minutes later than given. The rest of the class uses the rectified chart. (The site's chart for 9:54 PM shows Gemini lagna in D-24 and Leo lagna in D-20; the second chart on the page is the rectified one.)

Next antardaśā — Ketu (from mid-2009), with Cancer lagna:

• Ketu is a natural malefic in the 6th (Sagittarius), in exaltation — "for a natural malefic, the 6th is absolutely awesome."
• He is the 5th lord (Scorpio): scholarship.
• The flaw: from Jupiter (Virgo), Ketu is the 3rd lord in the 4th. "3rd lord in 4th, 4th lord in 3rd — it tries to push you towards stopping your education." Mercury is that from lagna; Ketu is that from Jupiter. So: better, not perfect.

Narayana Daśā of the D-24

• Each rāśi daśā gives results in thirds: first third — the lord of the sign; middle third — the sign itself, the house, the ārūḍhas in it; last third — the aspects on the sign.
• Pisces daśā (running; ends 2011) is the 9th house. The first third gave the 9th lord Jupiter. The middle third is running: the 9th house — fortune and good guidance in education — together with the obstacles of A6, which falls in Pisces.
• The last third (about two years): rāśi aspects on Pisces come from four planets —
  • Moon (lagna lord) — good
  • Jupiter (9th lord aspecting the 9th) — good
  • Ketu (5th lord) — good
  • Rāhu (8th lord) — bad
• Three of four are good. One stretch of about six months will be poor; the rest "quite good". He enters college in 2010, inside this last third. "Hopefully he will get his act together." Obstacles last until about July 2009.
• Aries daśā (2011–2021) is the 10th house: the focus goes to career-related education, not to collecting degrees. Aries has 2nd-house argala on the 9th (Pisces), so "bachelor's degree will be nicely finished."

Bachelor's Degree (9th House) — Which Field

• The 9th is Pisces. The 9th lord Jupiter is in the 3rd (Virgo) — his maraṇa-kāraka-sthāna — but he aspects the 9th, and that safeguards it. A6 there gives obstacles. "My feeling is he will finish his bachelor's degree."
• Viṁśottarī agrees. Both degrees fall in Jupiter daśā. He enters college in Jupiter–Ketu or, more likely, Jupiter–Venus, and finishes in Jupiter–Sun (2013). Jupiter is the 9th lord; Venus (in Cancer) has argala on the 9th.
• Jupiter and Venus together show "some kind of humanities or arts, rather than technical subjects." Rāhu, Ketu and Moon also aspect the 9th: humanities more likely; law also possible.
• Combining D-10 and D-24: "Technical line doesn't seem like a good bet here… Jupiter shows law. If he really is keen on the FBI line, some knowledge of law may be useful. Law, international law, international relationships — because Venus can show relationships." A better bet than aeronautical engineering.

Master's Degree (2nd House) — Doubtful

• The 2nd lord Sun is in the 8th (Aquarius), an inimical sign. He aspects the 2nd, but "the 2nd lord is very, very weak." (The transcript adds a garbled remark about the 12th and giving up; A12 falls in Aquarius with the Sun when worked by hand.)
• The father said that with the earlier lagna a master's had looked certain. The teacher: with this lagna it looks bleak. "But it doesn't matter. Who cares if somebody has a Masters or PhD?"
• Aries daśā: Aries aspects the 2nd house Leo by rāśi dṛṣṭi, and the Aries lord Mars joins the 2nd lord Sun — but both are in the 8th from lagna, which is also the bādhaka-sthāna (11th) from the daśā sign Aries.
• Jupiter–Sun: the Sun is in the 12th from the 9th (finishing — or giving up — the bachelor's), the 6th from Jupiter, the 8th from lagna. As 2nd lord he opens the possibility of a master's. "He might start and then give up, or he may not even start."
• "My suspicion is he will not finish Masters. There is some chance, but it is not very strong."

Remedy

• A student asked whether Mercury should be propitiated. Yes: Mercury antardaśā is running, he is the 8th lord in the rāśi chart (tension and anxiety) and a poor planet for education. The deity is Viṣṇu.
• "I am not talking about in general. Right now, in this antardaśā, praying to Viṣṇu will solve some of his problems" and give direction in education.
• A student connected it to the chapter: the 4th lord Venus is in the 5th in the rāśi chart — and BPHS gives "devotee of Viṣṇu" for the 4th lord in the 5th.

A Spiritual Period

• The father sees a philosopher in the boy (Aquarius lagna). The teacher: "He also has a very interesting D-20."
• Venus is the Ātmakāraka, with Sun and Ketu in the rāśi chart. In the Viṁśāṁśa (D-20) the Ātmakāraka is exalted in a kendra. (True of the rectified chart: Virgo lagna, Venus in Pisces in the 7th. At 9:54 PM the D-20 lagna is still Leo and Venus is in the 8th.)
• The teacher predicts a rāśi daśā of Aquarius running 2015–2023, age 23 to 31 — the name of the daśā system is garbled in the transcript (it sounds like Dṛg daśā) — and reads it with Gemini as lagna:
  • The 8th lord Saturn is in the 8th (Capricorn): the 8th is strong.
  • The Rāhu–Ketu axis is on the lagna.
  • Sun, Ketu and Venus are in the lagna, and Venus is the 12th lord.
  • These are the rāśi-chart placements counted from Gemini.

"The link between the 12th house and Ketu is always very good, and that is happening in lagna. So it shows some kind of renunciation, either external or internal."

• "He will make tremendous progress. He will be a sādhaka also, not just a karma yogi."
• For now he sees no serious sādhana. The advice for the present: focus on education, pray to Viṣṇu.
