Example Chart (Virgo Lagna 1966): D10 Sun+Saturn Within 1° in 12H = Terrible Dashamsha; 10 Jobs in Career; Saturn AD = Depression Onset (Moon-Saturn Together in D30 = Depression Prone); Best: Jupiter-Venus AD = Business + Human Interaction (Landscaping/Agriculture); Āditya Hṛdayam 3x Daily
A Virgo-lagna native with an M.Sc. in agriculture, about ten jobs and five years without one. In the rāśi chart the 10th lord Mercury is in the 2nd, 4° from Ketu, the 3rd lord — the 6th lord counted from the 10th. In the D-10 (Scorpio lagna, houses counted from the lagna degree) the 10th lord Sun is in the 12th, his maraṇa kāraka sthāna, less than 1° from Saturn, the malefic 3rd and 4th lord: "a terrible, terrible daśāṁśa". With no planet in the 10th and a weak lord, the field is read from the strongest aspects on the 10th — Venus 99% from Aquarius and Saturn 89% — giving a small own business in decorative plants, herbs or landscaping, with Jupiter–Venus as the good period. The depression is read from D-30, where Moon and Saturn share Taurus and Jupiter is a malefic from lagna and from Moon; it came in Jupiter–Saturn. Remedy: Āditya Hṛdayam three times a day and a simple Sūrya mantra, because Sun is the planet being hammered.
Key principle
This is a terrible, terrible daśāṁśa. With this daśāṁśa, it's very unlikely that you will have any kind of stable career.
Example Chart
Example chart
Lagna: 20° Virgo. Moon: 1°07' Capricorn.
Background given in class (2010): M.Sc. in agriculture; began as an agricultural engineer, moved to software, then sales. About ten jobs, never a stable career, jobless for the last five years. Recently hospitalised for depression.
Rasi Chart Overview
- 9th lord Venus is in lagna. He is debilitated in Virgo, but the 9th lord in lagna is still a blessing.
- 10th house (Gemini): empty and effectively unaspected. So go to the lord.
- 10th lord Mercury is in the 2nd house (Libra). That placement is not bad.
- He is with the 12th lord Sun, but Sun is at 4° and Mercury at 27° — 23° apart. Not a big affliction.
- Ketu is at 23°, within 4° of Mercury. This is the close affliction. Ketu owns the 3rd house (Scorpio). Taking the 10th house as lagna, the 3rd is the 6th from it: obstacles, enmity, fighting. So the lord of work is joined by the 6th lord from the house of work.
- "For instability in the career, Ketu is the key" as far as the rāśi chart goes.
D10 — Career Analysis
Reliability: the daśāṁśa lagna changes if the birth time is 8 min 27 s earlier or 3 min 51 s later. Within that window the D-10 stands.
D-10 lagna: Scorpio, at about 20°. Sun, Saturn, Mars and Rahu are all in Scorpio.
House count used in class: the teacher counts houses from the lagna degree here, not by whole sign. With lagna at 20° Scorpio:
- Mars (lagna lord) is in the 1st house. If the time were a few minutes later he too could fall in the 12th.
- Sun (7°37') and Saturn (6°46') are in the 12th house. Rahu is on the border; "Saturn is pakka in the 12th".
- Jupiter, in the sign Gemini, is in the 7th house. A student first says 8th; the teacher corrects: 7th, house-wise.
- The site's chart shows whole signs, so there Sun, Saturn, Mars and Rahu all appear in the lagna sign Scorpio and Jupiter in the 8th sign. The site's node is also about 0.7° ahead of the class figure, which moves Rahu clear of the border into the 1st.
Why this daśāṁśa is terrible:
- Sun is the 10th lord (Leo) and the kāraka for success in career. He is in a friendly sign — so far so good.
- But he is in the 12th house, his maraṇa kāraka sthāna.
- Saturn is less than 1° from him. Saturn is his enemy.
- Saturn is the 3rd and 4th lord. 4th is neutral, 3rd is malefic, so by the rule just learnt he is a malefic. The 3rd is the 6th from the 10th: leaves and breaks. "Good for business, not good for working somewhere."
- A neutral kendra lord, with a malefic who is also his worst enemy, in maraṇa kāraka sthāna.
"This is a terrible, terrible daśāṁśa. With this daśāṁśa, it's very unlikely that you will have any kind of stable career."
Why he tried so many fields: many influences on Sun. Scorpio shows engineering, Saturn agriculture, Rahu heavy machinery.
The 12th Lord of Rasi as the 10th Lord of D10
A student points to Sun's role in D-1. Sun owns the 12th house of the rāśi chart, the chart of physical existence: feet, a faraway country, physically giving up or sacrificing. That planet owns the house of career in the chart of career.
- So career is tied to a 12th-house matter. If he stays where he is, it is difficult to prosper. In a faraway place there is a better chance.
- "It had better be staying in a faraway country rather than sacrificing and giving up."
- What is showing now is the other side of the 12th: losses, giving up, lack of motivation. The 12th is contentment whether or not you get what you want.
Which Field Suits Him
Aspects on the 10th house of D-10 (graha dṛṣṭi, graded): Venus 99%, Saturn 89%. Saturn is also with the 10th lord. These two control the career.
Business or dealing with people:
- Lagna lord Mars in lagna: enterprise.
- The other lagna lord Ketu is in the 7th (Taurus), on the border of the 6th and 7th by the degree count.
- 7th lord Venus aspects the 10th powerfully.
- So not desk work. He should go and talk to people: business, marketing, sales.
Dikpāla aṁśas of D-10:
- Sun in Agni aṁśa: engineering.
- Mars, lagna lord in lagna, in the aṁśa of "the demon who became a god" (Nirṛti): the basic attitude in career is to break barriers. Cutting-edge things, or slightly illegal things; he may be willing to compromise on rules.
- Mercury in Ananta aṁśa, Venus in Indra aṁśa (noted without comment).
Why Venus is read instead of the 10th lord: there is no planet in the 10th and its lord is very weak. So take the planet with the strongest aspect on the 10th.
- Venus is a neutral planet for Scorpio lagna (7th and 12th lord), in Aquarius, a great friend's sign.
- He is the dispositor of Ketu, the stronger lagna lord.
- In the rāśi chart he is the 9th lord, bhāgya.
- His antardaśā comes in a few years.
What Venus in Aquarius shows:
- Venus alone: arts, crafts, interior design; also management.
- In Saturn's sign he is not hardcore arts. Aquarius is philosophy, psychology, hard work. Saturn is agriculture, and Saturn is the other planet on the 10th.
- Combined with his training: herbs, special or decorative plants, landscaping. "Something related to agriculture but having to do with good taste."
- As his own small business or consulting.
- Software and software sales do not show up here. "He should focus on his roots."
Daśā
- Jupiter mahādaśā is running. Jupiter is the 5th lord in the 7th house of D-10 (by the degree count): a trine lord in a quadrant, so by Parāśara's rule a yogakāraka for the daśāṁśa. The daśā lord is in the 7th and the 7th lord aspects the 10th closely: the 7th house is strong now.
- Antardaśās: Jupiter–Mercury "is not good"; Jupiter–Ketu "also not that good"; Jupiter–Venus will be good.
- He will never be very successful in career because of the basic weakness of the 10th lord. Whatever success he gets comes through a venture rather than a regular job.
- Advice: a small, modest, self-employed business. No big risk.
"Jupiter wants to do good, but the chart itself is so badly hammered with the Sun–Saturn–Rahu combination in the 12th house."
The teacher's image: you bring a golden idol to donate to a temple, but the temple has no room for it.
Depression Analysis
Why Jupiter daśā gave a health problem (rāśi chart): for Virgo lagna Jupiter is the bādhaka lord, and he is the dispositor of the 6th lord Saturn (in Pisces). The ṣaṣṭhāṁśa shows nothing particular, so the teacher goes to D-30.
Triṁśāṁśa (D-30), Capricorn lagna:
- Jupiter is the 3rd and 12th lord, in the 9th house. The house is not bad, but a 3rd and 12th lord is a malefic. His daśā can give bad results in health, including mental health.
- Moon and Saturn are in the same sign in D-30 (Taurus), though some degrees apart. From Moon, Saturn is in the 1st house, his maraṇa kāraka sthāna. That shows depression.
- "Moon–Saturn combination gives depression. Moon–Mars combination gives anger, irritability."
- From Moon in Taurus, Jupiter owns the 8th and 11th. He is a malefic from Moon as well as from lagna. "He will give testing times to the mind."
In the rāśi chart Moon is in Capricorn and Saturn in Pisces; the same-sign combination is in D-30.
Timing:
- The teacher says to be careful in Saturn antardaśā, then checks: Jupiter–Saturn had just ended. The student confirms the depression came in that antardaśā.
- Jupiter–Mercury, just begun and lasting a couple of years, is easier for the mind: from Moon, Mercury is in the 6th house but he is the 5th lord. Venus will be better still.
Severity in Jupiter daśā: Jupiter is bad, but he is not tied to the 6th or 8th house of D-30. As 12th lord he can give hospitalisation. Nothing like a sudden grave diagnosis stands out.
"He is bad, but it is not like he is so mad at you… He is not associated with the 8th house or 6th house. So it's not that bad."
Remedy
Whom to propitiate: Rahu is far from Sun; Saturn's affliction is the worst. But suppose Saturn is appeased and leaves Sun alone — Sun himself is still the 10th lord in the 12th. So Saturn's propitiation is not enough. Propitiate Sun.
- Āditya Hṛdayam, three times every day (ten minutes at most). A Veda mantra of the Sun also works, but few can chant it properly now.
- One simple mantra to keep running in the mind all the time: Om Ghṛṇiḥ Sūrya Āditya (the eight-syllable mantra of the Sun given by Manu; Om may be added at the end), or Om Sūm Sūryāya Namaḥ.
- "The power of simple mantras is you can do them all the time." A mantra works when it reverberates in the mind most of the time.
- After about a year of this, a significant change in career may begin.
- A student asks about worshipping a guru figure. That is fine, but "if I have to pick one, I will pick Sun."
- Sun is also the kāraka for health: reading Āditya Hṛdayam keeps health good whatever the lagna.
"Without some propitiation of Sun, nothing is going to happen. Neither Jupiter nor Venus can do anything if the 10th lord continues to be hammered."
