Example Chart — Which Seed for Narayana Daśā in D-24

Students bring the chart of a boy born 17 November 1990, 8:47 AM IST. He is still at school and is very keen on studying medicine. The family asked about his education.

The doṣas in the chart

• Rāśi lagna is Sagittarius with Saturn in it. Saturn in lagna is in his maraṇa kāraka sthāna.
• Born on Amāvāsyā: Amāvāsyā doṣa.
• Born on a Saṅkrānti day: Sun is at the very beginning of Scorpio. Saṅkrānti doṣa.
• The family has done no remedy for any of these.

The students' question — 12th house seed or 4th house seed?

The default seed for the D-24 Narayana daśā is the 12th house. The teacher had also once mentioned the 4th. The students tried both and both made sense. Which is right?

"Technically the seed is the 12th house. So the 12th house is technically the correct one, but Sanjay ji uses the 4th house to see formal education. The 12th house is your overall evolution, overall learning."

• Formal education is part of your overall growth, so it should also be visible from the 12th-house seed.
• The teacher tends to use only the 12th. Sanjay Rath tends to use only the 4th. "You should see in both."
• To focus only on formal education, the 4th-house seed is perhaps more accurate.

The D-24 Chart — 9th House, Trilochana Yoga and a Weak Moon

Everything in this part is read in D-24 (siddhāṁśa), not in the rāśi chart. D-24 lagna is Scorpio.

Why the students said medicine

• Mars, Sun and Mercury are in Cancer, the 9th house of D-24. The 9th shows bachelor's education.
• Mars and Sun show medicine and surgery.
• Mars is lagna lord and Sun is 10th lord. Lagna lord and 10th lord joined in the 9th is an auspicious rāja yoga.
• 10th lord in the 9th: the bachelor's education is tied to the career. If Sun or Mars also connect to the 10th in D-10, what he studies is what he will practise. It is a professional education.

Trilochana yoga through parivartana

• Moon, 9th lord, is in Gemini in the 8th. Mercury, 8th lord, is in Cancer in the 9th. Moon and Mercury exchange signs.
• So Mercury behaves as though he were Moon, and it is as though Sun, Moon and Mars sit together in Cancer.
• Sun, Moon and Mars in mutual trines is Trilochana yoga.

"So indirectly there is a Sun, Moon and Mars yoga in Cancer in the 9th house. That is Trilochana yoga. So indirectly results akin to Trilochana yoga are given in the 9th house."

• Result: his early schooling may or may not be very good, but the bachelor's education will be strong. He will go through many testing situations and come out with flying colours.

The drawbacks

• 9th lord in the 8th and 8th lord in the 9th is a duryoga: big changes and anxiety about the bachelor's education.
• Counted from the 9th house, Mercury is the 12th lord sitting in its lagna: displacement. He may have to go far away even for a bachelor's degree.
• Mercury is 3rd and 12th lord from the 9th house. Mars is yogakāraka from it. Sun is its 2nd lord, a māraka, sitting in it: when Leo or Sun get their turn in the daśās, the study can stop there.
• A6 and UL fall in the 9th house: some struggle over the bachelor's education.
• Moon is hemmed by malefics on both sides (Saturn in Taurus; Sun and Mars with Mercury in Cancer) and is in the 8th, his maraṇa kāraka sthāna. The one hope is the parivartana: sooner or later Moon starts behaving as though he were in Cancer. Until then there can be a big starting trouble.
• Still, the duryoga is dominated by the Sun–Mars combination. He calls that combination a protection.

Moon antardaśā — will it spoil the entry to college?

The students found that by Vimshottari the Moon antardaśā (in Saturn mahādaśā) is running when he enters college, around September 2008. Is that a bad period?

• No. A lagna lord, however weak, never gives illness. In the same way the lord of the 9th never gives big problems to the bachelor's education.

"On account of being weak, he may not safeguard well, but he himself will not destroy."

• For the bachelor's education Moon is the greatest benefactor. That college starts in his antardaśā suggests the D-24 lagna is right. (The students had not rectified the time; the D-24 lagna changes within 11 seconds.)
• From the 9th house, its lord Moon is in the 12th: moving away for the studies.
• From lagna, Moon is in maraṇa kāraka sthāna and in pāpa-kartari. Lagna is the person. So the person goes through anxiety, transition and flux, while the 9th-house matter itself has no problem.
• You cannot predict that the bachelor's studies will not proceed or that he will drop out. In Moon antardaśā they will start.
• The teacher is careful: "We are not predicting that he will go to medicine." The family reports that he wants to.

Narayana Daśā in D-24 — Both Seeds at Work

12th-house seed (overall learning): Capricorn daśā

• He is running Capricorn daśā. Capricorn is the 3rd house of D-24.
• Saturn, in Taurus in the 7th, aspects Capricorn by rāśi dṛṣṭi. Saturn is the lord of Capricorn, so the lord is aspecting his own sign. The result of that aspect is being given now (the teacher puts it at November 2005 to July 2007 or 2008).
• The 3rd is initiative, the 7th is desire. Both are kāma trikoṇas. One kāma trikoṇa lord sits in another and aspects the first.
• Saturn is also 4th lord (learning), and he is in A9. The 9th is the bachelor's education; A9 is its tangible manifestation.
• Reading: this is not the period in which he enters college. It is the period in which he nurtures a strong desire for a certain course or a certain university.
• This seed shows learning, not formal education. "He really wants to learn from inside."

4th-house seed (formal education): Scorpio daśā

• 4th lord of the rāśi chart is Jupiter. In D-24 Jupiter is in Libra.
• Compare Libra with its 7th, Aries. Aries is empty. Libra holds Jupiter and Venus. Libra is stronger, so the daśās start from Libra.
• He is now in Scorpio daśā, the D-24 lagna.
• The part of the daśā that gives the aspects on Scorpio: Rahu and Ketu (Capricorn) and Mars, Sun and Mercury (Cancer) aspect Scorpio by rāśi dṛṣṭi. Scorpio is lagna, a new beginning; planets of the 9th aspecting it show a new beginning in bachelor's studies. In this third he is thinking about and preparing for them.
• The part that gives the lord's result: Mars, lagna lord, in the 9th, in a pṛṣṭhodaya sign, gives his result in the last third. That is when he enters the bachelor's course. Lagna lord in the 9th can give a bachelor's education.
• The two seeds agree. From the 12th-house seed he wants to learn. From the 4th-house seed the 9th house is activated. And the Vimshottari Moon antardaśā is coming. "Things make reasonable sense."

The recording is not consistent on which third of Scorpio daśā was running on the day of the class: the teacher first says the last third and later the middle third.
