Case Study — Biotech Student, Master's and Career

Birth data (read out in class): 21 June 1990, 10:40 PM IST; male
Class date: 27 November 2010. Running Rahu mahādaśā, Venus antardaśā, Venus pratyantardaśā.

The situation: finished a bachelor's in biotechnology in India in May 2010. Wrote an entrance exam for an M.Sc., took a job meanwhile, and quit it after a month. Came to the US for a master's. His scores did not reach the university in time, so admission slipped from fall to the spring semester; he is taking courses until then (two so far, 4.0 out of 4.0). Top of his class throughout. He now talks of going back to India. His parents ask whether he will carry on.

D-24 Lagna Rectification

No dated events were available, so the teacher rectifies on what is known: a very sharp student, top of the class.

• At the given time the D-24 lagna is Sagittarius. It becomes Capricorn 25 seconds later and Scorpio 3 minutes 47 seconds earlier.
• A recorded "10:40" can easily be 10:35. "The question is not that. Does it explain things?"

Sagittarius D-24:

• 5th lord Mars is in lagna, but with 8th lord Moon; by longitude the two fall in the 12th house.
• Jupiter, lagna lord (education overall) and 4th lord (basic education), is in the 2nd house in an inimical sign. That does not explain excellent schooling.

Capricorn D-24:

• 4th lord Mars goes to the 12th, in a friendly sign → schooling away from the parents. He studied at home. Rejected.

Scorpio D-24 (lagna taken near 27° Scorpio):

• Lagna lord Mars and 9th lord Moon are together in Sagittarius, a friendly sign, Jupiter's house. Chandra-Maṅgala yoga and a rāja yoga of two trine lords.
• They are at the start of Sagittarius (2° and 12°), so by longitude both are in the 1st house.
• 5th lord Jupiter is in a quadrant (Aquarius), though in an inimical sign. By longitude he is on the border of the 3rd and 4th houses.
• 4th house has two lords, Saturn and Rahu. Saturn is in the 9th, a trine (28° Cancer; he stays in the 9th only if the lagna degree is below his).
• Lagna lord, 9th lord and 5th lord are all well placed.

"When there is fundamental strength in the chart, other things basically will follow. If you have a nice house, even if one room is a little dirty, still the house has an appeal. Whereas if the house looks very bad and very old and everything broken down, even if there is a beautiful room inside, it doesn't make sense."

• Without strength in lagna and lagna lord, a decent 4th lord alone does not make an achiever in education.
• Scorpio is taken: a time about four minutes before the recorded one.

What the site's chart shows: it is cast for 10:36 PM so that the D-24 lagna is Scorpio and the D-10 lagna Pisces, as in class. The site counts houses by sign, so Moon and Mars show in the 2nd sign and Sun in the 3rd; the teacher counts each house from the lagna degree, which puts Moon and Mars in the 1st and Sun in the 2nd. The class has Rahu and Ketu in Gemini in D-24 (Rahu at 7°) and Rahu in Capricorn with Jupiter in D-10; the site's node is about a degree and a half higher in the Rāśi and falls in Cancer in D-24 and in Aquarius in D-10. In D-4 the site's Rahu is in Cancer and does not aspect the 9th house as the class has it.

D-24 Narayana Daśā

• Libra daśā ran for the last ten years. A movable sign gives its own results in the first third, its lord's in the second, its aspectors' in the last. Aspectors: Venus and Jupiter, 7th and 5th lords. The last two thirds were good.
• Virgo daśā runs now: the 11th house. Own results first, aspectors' second, lord Mercury's third.
• Aspectors of Virgo: Moon and Mars (good), Ketu (lagna lord in the 8th — fine), Rahu (4th lord in the 8th — so-so). One short stretch in the middle third is of concern. Otherwise the coming years are fine for education.

Bachelor's Degree in Rahu Daśā

• By longitude Rahu is in the 7th house of D-24, and he is 4th lord. All the schooling so far fell in his daśā.
• The bachelor's degree is the 9th house. What links Rahu to the 9th?
  1. 9th lord Moon (2° Sagittarius) aspects Rahu (7° Gemini) by graha dṛṣṭi, about 90%. Counting Rahu's houses in reverse from his degree, Moon falls in the 6th from Rahu, so Rahu does not aspect Moon; Moon aspects Rahu.
  2. Rahu is in the 12th from A9.
  3. A student's point, accepted: Saturn, co-lord of the 4th, is in the 9th, and Rahu gives a hint of Saturn — hard work.
• Rahu gives the 9th house "in Rahu's own way": path-breaking, not regular engineering.
• The subject: 9th lord Moon is the basic planet → life sciences. Rahu–Ketu act on Moon (unconventional), and Mars is with Moon (high-tech). Biotechnology.

Master's Degree

• Master's is seen from the 2nd house.
• 9th lord Moon is in Jupiter's sign; Jupiter is the 2nd lord. 2nd lord Jupiter is in Rahu's sign, Aquarius. There is continuity between the 9th and the 2nd → the master's will be in the same field.
• Jupiter is well placed: a benefic for the chart, friend of Mars, dispositor of the lagna lord–9th lord rāja yoga.
• Rahu and Jupiter are in mutual trines (Gemini and Aquarius) and Jupiter is in Rahu's house, so Rahu can give Jupiter's results. A master's in Rahu daśā is fully possible.

Why the delay — Venus pratyantardaśā:

• Venus is in the 10th or 9th house. He has little to do with the 2nd.
• He aspects 2nd lord Jupiter by graha dṛṣṭi (Leo to Aquarius) and is Jupiter's enemy.
• Take the 2nd house, Sagittarius, as lagna. Venus is its 6th and 11th lord — a functional malefic for the master's.

"It's like 6th lord aspecting lagna lord effectively. Taking the 2nd, Sagittarius, as lagna, lagna lord Jupiter is being very closely aspected by the 6th lord, malefic."

• So Venus antardaśā, Venus pratyantardaśā delayed it, the way the 6th house obstructs.
• The whole Venus antardaśā need not be bad. The mahādaśā is favourable; the right pratyantardaśā sets it right.

Sun pratyantardaśā (January–March 2011):

• Sun is in the 2nd house of D-24. He is 10th lord — not a malefic by Parāśara; neutral or slightly benefic.
• More important: from the 2nd house as lagna he is the 9th lord placed in lagna.
• Only flaw: an inimical sign. "It will not be perfect."
• Far smoother than the Venus period.

Moon and Mars pratyantardaśās after it: both are yoga-kārakas whichever level of education is in question. In their periods he enjoys what he studies, does well and gets recognition.

Verdict: a good chance of the master's starting around 7 January, give or take two weeks — the spring semester. That stretch till March is very good, and the coming year is good.

Career in D-10

D-10 lagna: Pisces.

Rahu daśā:

• Rahu is 12th lord in the 11th. "It's okay. He is not great." A 12th lord gives losses; he does not show a career starting.
• He is with Jupiter, lagna lord and 10th lord, and afflicts him. Being with the 10th lord he may start the career.
• A student's point: the job came in Rahu–Ketu (May–June 2010). Rahu in the 11th aspects the 5th, where Ketu sits.

Rahu–Venus (July 2010 – July 2013):

• Venus is 3rd and 8th lord. He does not show a stable career.
• He afflicts Jupiter closely: Jupiter 25° Capricorn, Venus 24° Capricorn.
• Venus antardaśā began about 9 July 2010 (± two weeks). The job ended as it began.
• "Instead of trying to pursue career in that antardaśā, it's better to study."

Jupiter daśā (from 2017):

"Engage in all the studies in the Rahu period, and once your Jupiter Dasha comes, irrespective of what you studied, what you did not study, which lines you went into, Jupiter Dasha will be good for career."

• No hurry to start a career now. Master's, doctorate, post-doctorate in Rahu daśā; the career from 2017.

Guru-Chāṇḍāla Yoga in D-10 — Research

• Jupiter is afflicted by Rahu and Venus in Capricorn: Guru-Chāṇḍāla yoga, and Jupiter is debilitated.
• Read another way: Rahu is the kāraka of the unconventional and the cutting-edge, and of research. Venus owns the 8th — unearthing what is hidden, research.
• Lord of the house of research and kāraka of research, both with the 10th lord → a career in research. Very modern, very unconventional.
• Guru–Venus–Rahu can show sinful surroundings and actions. "Some of the modern biotech research does happen in sinful environments."
• Capricorn is a sign of ghora Kali. Jupiter is there with Rahu and Venus — "demon and demon teacher" — in a demoniacal sign.

"Very cutting edge, very modern kind of research that is morally speaking sinful but very liberal."

• He offers stem cells as a guess and declines to be specific: "You will be on the cutting edge of biotechnology."

Stay or Return — D-4

• Rahu–Venus is running. In D-4 Venus is the 9th lord and Rahu aspects the 9th house.
• "Being abroad makes sense."
• Do not think of going back to India. The mix-up can be cleared. Both the daśā and the antardaśā favour staying. Do the master's and the Ph.D. there.

Propitiation

• Durgā — Rahu daśā is running.
• Lakṣmī — in the Rāśi chart (Aquarius lagna) Venus is yoga-kāraka and 4th lord in his own sign. Good for education in general, and he is the antardaśā lord. Lakṣmī aṣṭottara for the next three years.
• "Praying to Lakshmi will give him yoga, and whatever little weakness is there of being a malefic in the Daśāṁśa, it will be removed."
• Lakṣmī first, Durgā second.

Rahu or Saturn in the 12th From an Ārūḍha

Recalled in class while explaining the bachelor's degree:

"Saturn and Rahu being in the 12th house of an Arudha is a Raj yoga for that Arudha. If Rahu is placed in an Arudha, he will ruin it. But if he is placed away from it, in the 12th house from it, he will basically make it flourish."

• First taught for ārūḍha lagna. "The same applies to all Arudhas."
• Here: Rahu in the 12th from A9 → rāja yoga for A9. He not only gives the bachelor's degree in his daśā but makes the native do well in it.
