Example Chart (1969): D16 Moon = 6L Debilitated in A8 = Vehicle Accidents; D6 Moon = 11L in 6H = Litigation; 5H in D4 = India Pull vs Rahu = Abroad & Example Chart (1955): Annual D10 6L in 7H = Layoff Risk; Harsha Yoga in Annual Chart = Win Litigation
Two charts read in class on 4 May 2009. The 1969 native has boss trouble, has just hit a cyclist and been taken to court, and wants to move back to India. The teacher chooses Ṣaṣṭihāyanī daśā over Śatābdikā by testing it on past events, then reads Sun–Moon varga by varga: in D-10 the Moon is the debilitated 5th lord in the 9th with Rahu and the 8th lord Venus (boss trouble, loss of peace); in D-4 he is the 5th lord in lagna (pull to the motherland) but eclipsed by the 12th lord Rahu; in D-16 he is the debilitated 6th lord in A8 (vehicle accident); in D-6 he is the 11th lord in the 6th (a court case he can win). Two Tithi Praveśa charts rectify the birth time by 30 seconds and place the likely closure of the case in the Mars period, September 2009 — Harṣa Yoga. The 1955 native faces a layoff round: in the annual D-10 the year lord Mars is the 6th lord in the 7th — loss of service — and his period runs 8 June to 4 July 2009. The coming Mercury daśā (8th lord exalted in the 8th, lord of ārūḍha lagna) is judged good after an unsettled start.
Key principle
6th lord shows service, 7th house shows loss of service. So 6th lord in 7th house shows loss of service. And he is the owner of the year, and he is running from June 8th to July 4th.

Chart Analysis — Vehicle Accident, Litigation and the Wish to Go Home (1969 native)
The Question (class date 4 May 2009)
- A computer engineer living in the US. Married September 1996; went abroad about 1997–98; career began 2002; independent consultant since 2004.
- Inexplicable worries for a year. His boss troubles him.
- He has booked tickets for the first week of June to move back to India for good.
- Two days before the class he hit a cyclist with his car, and it has gone to court. Earlier he twice narrowly missed hitting a pedestrian.
- He asks when all this ends and whether he can go back in peace.
Which Conditional Daśā?
- Two apply: Ṣaṣṭihāyanī (Sun in lagna) and Śatābdikā (lagna vargottama).
- Thumb rules: prefer the daśā whose condition is less probable; prefer the daśā with more years.
- Sun in lagna: 1 in 12.
- Lagna vargottama: 1 in 9 — a lagna sign can only have 9 of the 12 navāṁśas, and exactly one of them is vargottama (first for movable signs, middle for fixed, last for dual).
- Probability favours Ṣaṣṭihāyanī; years favour Śatābdikā (100 against 60).
- The Sun is at 9° and the lagna at 27° — at opposite ends of the sign. His hold on lagna is weak. On that count Śatābdikā looked the better choice.
- The student who brought the chart had tried Ṣaṣṭihāyanī and thought it did not fit. The teacher tests it against the known events:
- Marriage, September 1996 — Jupiter daśā. Jupiter is the 7th lord in rāśi and navāṁśa, sits in the 9th of navāṁśa, and aspects the Upapada in Pisces. A strong candidate.
- Career start, 2002 — Jupiter–Venus. Jupiter is the 10th lord in rāśi aspecting the 10th; in D-10 he is lagna lord and 10th lord aspecting the 10th, in ārūḍha lagna. Jupiter fits. Venus fits poorly — he is in maraṇa kāraka sthāna from the daśā lord. "It is not really making that much sense."
- Consulting, 2004 — Jupiter–Rahu. Ketu has no daśā in Ṣaṣṭihāyanī, so Rahu gives Ketu's results. In D-10 Ketu is the 9th lord in the 3rd. Consulting and independent work are the kāma trikoṇa — 3rd (initiative, short projects, being in charge of your own work), 7th (business), 11th. It fits.
- Going abroad, 1997–98 — Jupiter–Sun or Jupiter–Mars. In rāśi Rahu, a lord of the 9th and kāraka for foreign travel, is in watery Pisces; Jupiter is his dispositor, aspects him by graha dṛṣṭi, and is the bādhaka lord. In D-4 Rahu is the 12th lord in lagna in Pisces, aspected by his dispositor Jupiter from the bādhakasthāna. Within Jupiter daśā, Mars is the stronger antardaśā: in D-4 he is the 9th lord in the 12th.
- Ṣaṣṭihāyanī also explains the present troubles (below), so the teacher keeps it.
"When multiple conditional daśās are applicable, it is as though there is a room with different glass windows. One window is clean; another has some dirt, so you can see through it, but it is hazy. Ṣaṣṭihāyanī seems very clean in explaining the known past, so we are sticking to it. But the other daśās will also be working."
- Exercise he sets: run Śatābdikā from the Moon and from lagna against the same events. They should make sense too.
- Rectification margin: the student's software put Mercury in navāṁśa lagna; the teacher's has Mercury in the 12th of navāṁśa (vargottama in Taurus). Mercury is on the border. The site's chart shows Mercury in Gemini navāṁśa, as the student had it.
Boss Trouble — Read in the Daśāṁśa (D-10)
Running: Sun daśā (since 2005), Moon antardaśā (August 2008 to early August 2009).
- Sun daśā. In D-10 (Pisces lagna) the Sun is in his own sign in the 6th — very strong — but with Saturn and Gulika. Political tension at work. Things have been rough since Sun daśā began.
- Moon antardaśā. In D-10 the Moon is the 5th lord, debilitated in the 9th in Scorpio, with Rahu, Venus and Mandi.
- The 5th lord does not show change. He shows recognition, following and emotional fulfilment. (Lagna and the 5th are good for getting a new offer, because someone recognises your ability. Change is shown by the dusthānas, especially the 8th and A8.)
- The Moon, also kāraka of mental peace, is eclipsed by Rahu, the 12th lord — the 12th is loss and also the sense of loss, thinking you are losing something. Venus with him is the 8th lord. Two dusthāna lords, both enemies of the Moon, hammer him.
- The Moon's agenda is emotional stability, and the resource he has been given is the 9th house — boss, guru, professional guidance. Rahu eclipses him while he tries.
"This Moon antardaśā will confuse him. It will rob him of his emotional stability, and he sees his boss as the reason for it."
- Not only this period. The 8th and 9th lords (Venus and Mars) are in parivartana in D-10. A debilitated Moon with Rahu and Mandi is in the 9th. The Sun, kāraka for authorities, is with Saturn in the 6th of enmity.
"In general, this is somebody who will be complaining about bosses. If not boss, boss's boss or some higher-up will be messing with his life most of the time."
- Rahu, Moon and Venus periods accentuate it. The tension lasts the whole of Sun daśā; Sun–Saturn will be the worst for trouble with boss and authorities. Just as the Sun with Saturn in D-10 gives a boss who is always unhappy.
- Sāḍe-sātī is running. Saturn is the natal 8th lord and sits in the 8th from natal Moon. He is now in the 12th from the Moon; when he moves into Virgo he crosses the natal Moon, Jupiter (bādhaka lord) and Ketu (6th lord) — worse. A rocky few years, accidents or no accidents.
Will He Go Back to India? — Chaturthāṁśa (D-4)
- For someone living abroad, the 5th house of D-4 is going back to the motherland. The 5th is belonging and fulfilment: the place you call yours, where your roots are. The 5th also shows patriotism.
- D-4 lagna is Pisces. The Moon is the 5th lord, in lagna. Lagna in D-4 is a new beginning in residence. So since Moon antardaśā began in August 2008 there has been a strong pull towards India.
- Will the Moon succeed? He is eclipsed by Rahu:
- Rahu is the 12th lord — staying in a faraway country — and the 8th lord counted from the 5th house: he wants to destroy the plan.
- The dispositor Jupiter could help, but he is in the bādhakasthāna (7th) with Ketu, the 9th lord — again a faraway country. Their dispositor Mercury is in the 9th.
- Saturn is the 12th lord in the 5th: foreign residence, with some sense of belonging to the foreign country.
- Many influences say stay abroad. Only the Moon, and Saturn by position, push towards India. The Moon is weak and afflicted.
- Mercury antardaśā (from August 2009) will not take him back: in the 12th in rāśi, and in D-4 the 7th lord and bādhaka lord in the 9th — "staying in a faraway country, maybe happy, maybe unhappy".
- Venus has some chance later: 8th lord of change in D-4, aspecting the 5th house (graha dṛṣṭi, Capricorn to Cancer).
- Verdict: if he goes before Moon antardaśā ends, good. Otherwise it may not happen. The June trip will probably be postponed — the court case alone will hold him.
Vehicle Accidents — Ṣoḍaśāṁśa (D-16)
Can the Moon give accidents? "Oh, absolutely."
- Rāśi (generic). The Moon is in the 4th house of vehicles, afflicted by Ketu, a lord of the 6th. Counted from Venus, kāraka of vehicles, the Moon is the 4th lord placed in the 6th.
- D-16 (Aquarius lagna).
- The Moon is the 6th lord of accidents, debilitated in Scorpio.
- He is in A8 (mṛtyupada). A8 is the tangible manifestation of the 8th house — upsets, unexpected events, a roller-coaster. The 6th lord in A8 links 6th and 8th.
- From Venus, who is strong here by the company of several planets, the Moon is the 4th lord in the 8th — the maraṇa kāraka sthāna of the Moon.
- A student asks about Venus antardaśā. From lagna Venus is yogakāraka; he is the 12th from the 4th house and in the 3rd, so he can show expenditure on vehicles or buying one. Not as bad as the Moon. Mercury is mixed — 5th and 8th lord. Mars is again a problem. "Moon is the real problematic planet."
Litigation — Ṣaṣṭhāṁśa (D-6)
An accident need not bring a court case — you can exchange phone numbers and be done. The case must show in D-6.
- D-6 lagna is Virgo. The Moon is in the 6th, in an inimical sign. Litigation in Moon antardaśā.
- Can the Moon give success? He is the 11th lord — fulfilment of desires — placed in the 6th. He will fulfil his agenda using litigation as his resource: he gives a case and makes him win it. The 11th lord in the 6th is a kind of rāja yoga.
- A student adds: in the natal rāśi Mars, the 6th lord, is strong in the 6th. He gets into trouble and comes out of it. Accepted.
- But the Moon is weak: in Rahu's sign, and Rahu–Ketu with Jupiter aspect him. The chance of closure within Moon antardaśā (June–July) is small and will probably be missed.
- Mercury antardaśā is the likely closer: lagna lord in the 5th, aspecting the 11th by graha dṛṣṭi; from the daśā lord Sun he is the 5th lord in the 9th.
"I am not afraid that he will lose the case. He will either win the case or it will be settled with reasonably favourable terms to him."
- Jupiter's aspect on the Moon does not rescue him. A student points out that Jupiter aspects the Moon. But Jupiter is the bādhaka lord and sits with Rahu–Ketu, and Rahu is the Moon's dispositor. You are stuck in your enemy's house, and your friend is being beaten by that enemy: the enemy calls the shots. Jupiter also shows the lawyer — he may engage the wrong one, a cheat, who drags the case and makes money from it.
The Annual Chart of the Accident Year
The site's Tithi Praveśa moment for 2008–09 is 11 July 2008, 11:41 AM IST; the teacher did not read his out. His annual lagna is just under 15° Virgo — he says D-16 is within seconds of a sign border. The chart shown on the site is set a few minutes earlier (11:35 AM) so that it reproduces the vargas used in class.
- Year lord (hora lord): Mars. In the annual rāśi he is the 8th lord in the 12th with Saturn, the 6th lord. A year of tension, whatever the daśā.
- Rectification. With birth at 7:10 the annual D-16 lagna is Leo, 22 seconds from the border; lagna lord Sun is then in the 6th. With birth 30 seconds earlier it is Cancer. The class picks Cancer and sets the birth time to 7:09:30:
- The Moon is in lagna. Venus, the 4th lord of vehicles, is in the 12th of loss.
- Jupiter, the 6th lord of accidents, aspects Venus (graha dṛṣṭi, Sagittarius to Gemini). A kendra lord with a dusthāna lord is a duryoga, and 4th and 6th — vehicle and accident — are incompatible houses, like 10th and 8th, career and retirement. Jupiter and Venus are also enemies. The 4th lord in the 12th alone would not give an accident.
- Saturn and Mars are in the 8th. Saturn is the 8th lord in his own house, making it strong; Mars is kāraka for accidents.
"They are like two thugs who hate each other. When you put them in one room, they will destroy everything."
- The accident came in the annual daśā of Venus, antardaśā of Mars (27 April to the night of 1 May).
- Why litigation. In the annual D-6 (Sagittarius lagna) Venus is the 6th lord in the 11th and the dispositor of Mercury (bādhaka lord) and Moon (8th lord), who are together in the 6th.
- Rule: any two of bādhaka, 6th and 8th linked give big trouble thrust on you unexpectedly. Here all three meet.
- Venus–Mercury (1–12 May) is the period of legal notices and formalities.
- Venus is also the 11th lord in the 11th and can give some closure; 7–21 June is a good window if there is a hearing. But the annual chart only adds to what the natal chart shows, and the natal chart makes that unlikely.
- Sun, 9th lord (authorities) in the 10th but aspected by Rahu, Ketu and Mars: dealing with authorities, not favourably.
The Next Annual Chart: Marriage, Life and the Court Case
Tithi Praveśa for 2009–10 falls on 30 June 2009 at 4:35:11 PM IST.
- Year lord: Mercury. Scorpio lagna. Mercury is the 8th and 11th lord — a functional malefic — in the 7th with the 7th lord Venus.
- 8th lord in the 7th: trouble in marriage; and a māraka — danger to life is possible.
- Navāṁśa: Mercury is with the bādhaka lord Moon and afflicts lagna lord Ketu. Problems with the wife; separation is possible.
- D-10: Mercury is the 8th lord with the 10th lord Sun. Not good for career.
- Is his life in danger? Check the natal daśās. Ṣaṣṭihāyanī: Sun, 3rd lord in lagna, is not a māraka. Vimśottarī: Jupiter daśā — 7th lord with the 2nd lord, aspected by Rahu, a māraka; but the antardaśā is Mars (Moon is over), 6th lord in the 6th, and from Jupiter the 3rd lord in the 3rd — not a strong māraka. No concern for longevity. Career and marriage will see trouble this year.
- Litigation in the annual D-6 (Sagittarius lagna). Mercury, bādhaka lord, is with the Moon, 8th lord, in the 4th: they rob his sukha. Period by period:
- Venus: 6th lord in the 11th — possible.
- Jupiter: lagna lord in the 5th of pūrva puṇya, aspecting lagna and the 11th. In the annual rāśi and D-10 he is the 5th lord in the 4th — comfort, relief, a sense of direction. A strong candidate.
- Sun: 9th lord of authorities in the bādhakasthāna — the authorities will not be for him. In the annual rāśi he is in the 8th: fevers.
- Moon: 8th lord with the bādhaka lord. No major hearing should fall here.
- Mars: 5th and 12th lord, a functional benefic, aspecting the 5th house and Jupiter. In the annual rāśi he is lagna lord and 6th lord in the 6th — Harṣa Yoga. He makes the person crush his enemies.
- Prediction. The case most likely closes in the Mars period — September — with a favourable result. At worst, the end of the year or early next, when Jupiter brings full closure. (The natal reading only said "Mercury antardaśā", a year long; the annual chart narrows it.)
- Harṣa Yoga also means many obstacles to overcome in Mars's period — but with fighting spirit: "I can do it", where before it was "can I do it?". Jupiter's period is when he finally feels he knows what he is doing. Jupiter is the key annual daśā.
Remedy
- Students propose Subrahmaṇya, Lakṣmī, Hanumān, Narasiṁha: the 6th lord Mars in the 6th gives fighting spirit, and Mars is Hanumān, Subrahmaṇya, Narasiṁha.
- From the chara kāraka. Enemies, rivalry and litigation are seen from the Jñāti kāraka, here the Sun. As the 6th from Amātya kāraka is used for work, the 6th from Jñāti kāraka in navāṁśa is used for fighting litigation. The Sun is in Sagittarius navāṁśa; the 6th is Taurus, holding Mercury — Viṣṇu and his avatāras. (The site's navāṁśa has Mercury one sign on, in Gemini; see above.)
- In D-6 too, Mercury — lagna lord, whose antardaśā is expected to solve the problem — points to Viṣṇu.
- Mars and Mercury together: Narasiṁha.
- Practice: meditate 5–10 minutes on the bīja kṣrauṁ (kṣa as in kṣatriya, ra under it, au), then recite the mantra ugraṁ vīraṁ mahā-viṣṇuṁ jvalantaṁ sarvato-mukham…
- A student sees a graha mālikā; it needs Rahu to complete it. Without Rahu there are only three planets. "Just forget it."
Chart Analysis — Layoff Risk and Relocation (1955 native)
The Question
- A student of the class. He moved to another state for a job last year and has survived several rounds of layoffs there. One more round is expected next month.
- He could not sell his house, lives in an apartment, and is thinking of moving back to the city he left.
- No special conditional daśā applies; Vimśottarī from the Moon is used.
The Coming Mercury Daśā (17 years, from about 25 July 2009)
He is at the fag end of Saturn daśā, in Saturn–Jupiter.
- Rāśi. Mercury is the 8th lord, exalted in the 8th at 6° Virgo; he also owns the 5th. A functionally neutral planet.
- He is lord of AL, in a kendra from AL — materially this cannot be a bad daśā.
- He is lord of A8 and A9 too. A8 is a little problematic, but AL and A9 are together in a trine from lagna.
- 8th lord in the 8th is a good yoga, and no planet afflicts him.
- A student points out the pāpa kartarī — Sun and Mars in Leo, Saturn in Libra. Sun is in his own sign, Mars in a friend's, Saturn exalted: fire planets in a fire sign, an air planet in an air sign. Kartarī from strong planets is not much of a problem.
- Gulika is near but on a sign border and far from Mercury by degree. Ignored.
- Only the Moon, the 6th lord, has graha dṛṣṭi on Mercury, and it is close by degree (Moon 5° Aquarius, Mercury 7° Virgo). 6th lord aspecting 8th lord: a partial Viparīta Rāja Yoga.
- Spiritually. The 8th is the house of sādhanā. In navāṁśa Mercury is the 9th lord aspecting the 12th. In D-20 he is the 6th and 9th lord in the 12th of mokṣa — 9th lord in the 12th is very good for sādhanā. Once the daśā settles he will do much more.
- Career (D-10, Aquarius lagna). Mercury is in the 6th house of service as the 8th lord — Viparīta Rāja Yoga; he owns the 5th as well. Not a bad placement. "He is not great, but he is OK."
- Saturn was better: lagna lord in a kendra, in ārūḍha lagna.
- As the 8th lord Mercury can give retirement at some point in the daśā. No big setback such as losing a job and being unable to find another.
The Layoff Round: the Natal Sub-Periods
- Jupiter antardaśā. In D-10 Jupiter is the 2nd and 11th lord — fine for income — but in the bādhakasthāna, and a benefic in the 6th from ārūḍha lagna. Some problem in career at some point.
- Rahu pratyantardaśā (running). In D-10 Rahu is in the 3rd from lagna — a temporary break, leave, or contract work. Worse: from Jupiter he is in the 7th, and an enemy of Jupiter.
- The 7th house is the break in service: it is the māraka of the 6th.
- Sūkṣma periods in June: Ketu is in the 7th from Rahu and the 8th lord from him; Venus is the 2nd and 7th lord from Rahu. Both māraka for the job.
- Cause for concern — but Vimśottarī alone is not enough for this kind of prediction.
- The site's D-10 puts Jupiter in Scorpio, the 10th. Jupiter is at 24°01′ Cancer, a hair past the daśāṁśa border; the teacher's chart has him in Libra — the 9th, bādhakasthāna for Aquarius, with Rahu in the 7th from him.
The Annual Chart: Year Lord Mars in the 7th
Tithi Praveśa for 2008–09 fell on 14 September 2008 at 7:24:58 PM IST. A student confirms the moment and the D-10 lagna on her own software. Rāśi lagna Pisces, D-10 lagna Gemini. Year lord: Mars.
- In the annual D-10, Mars is the 6th lord in the 7th house, which is also his maraṇa kāraka sthāna.
"6th lord shows service, 7th house shows loss of service. So 6th lord in 7th house shows loss of service."
- He is the lord of the year, and his period runs 8 June to 4 July 2009. If the layoffs fall then, he is very likely on the list. The first week of June is the Moon's period.
- A student objects: should the lord of the year not favour the native? No. The lord of the year is the one with the biggest say. Whether he uses it for good or bad depends on his agenda.
- Could Mars in the 7th give a business instead? Mars in the 7th can give business, but he is the 6th lord of service, not, say, the 3rd lord.
- Saturn's period is good.
- Mercury's period, next: in the annual D-10 Mercury is lagna lord in the 8th with Venus, the 5th lord, in a friendly sign; their dispositor Saturn is in the 9th of fortune. A new beginning, a new job — with a change of place or a setback first, because it is the 8th. He may lose the job and then something suddenly works out.
Relocation
- Annual rāśi (Pisces lagna): Mercury is the 7th lord in the 7th — the bādhakasthāna — with Mars (9th lord) and Venus (8th lord), and is their dispositor. 7th, 8th and 9th together: bādhaka is big change, the 8th instability, the 9th a far place.
- Annual D-4 (Sagittarius lagna): Mercury is again the 7th lord in the 7th, the bādhakasthāna, and dispositor of the 12th lord Mars.
- Natal: Saturn–Jupiter has already given one change of place. Mercury, 8th lord in the 8th, can give a big one. Once Mercury daśā starts — late July or August — another move is possible.
- So: a change of place is likely again, and there may be trouble in career.
Practical Advice
- Keep the résumé ready and send it round now.
- Do not let anyone at work know he is thinking of moving back. That is an easy reason to put him on the list. (Said "not astrologically, but practically".)
- Be prepared for the layoff; do everything to avoid it.
Remedy
- Ātma kāraka Jupiter; Amātya kāraka Saturn. In navāṁśa the 6th from Amātya kāraka holds Ketu (its lord is Mercury): Gaṇapati. Mercury also stands for pṛthvī tattva, which Gaṇeśa governs. Gaṇapati mantra or homam.
- Mercury daśā is starting and Mercury is in the 6th of D-10: Viṣṇu Sahasranāma with sampuṭīkaraṇa using the Māyā bīja:
- oṁ hrīṁ before each verse, hrīṁ oṁ after it — not hrīṁ alone.
- Every day from now, at least once, three times when there is time.
- Purpose: not to be laid off, or if laid off to find something at once.
- He has been doing Satyanārāyaṇa vrata every Pūrṇimā for about a year. Very auspicious; continue. Viṣṇu matters for him as Mercury daśā begins.
Prognosis
- Saturn–Jupiter brought instability: Jupiter is in the 6th house.
- The daśā sandhi — some months to a year either side of the change — is a hard one here because one planet is lagna lord and the other the 8th lord.
- After the first unsettled stretch Mercury daśā gives stability and a clear direction. It will not tear down what he built: 8th lord in the 8th, and lord of AL and A9.
- Two or three difficult months ahead. He should not worry too much.
- A very good daśā for learning astrology: "He will be a better astrologer in this period."
