Example Chart — D9 Char Dasha: Aquarius(6H)+Saturn Exalted in 9H from It=Good Results; Key Rule: Char Dasha Lord Transiting 9H from Dasha Sign=Conducive; Pisces Char Dasha(7H)=Better for Marriage; Ashtottari(10L in 10H)=Conditional Dasha Adds Hope; Remedies: Subramanya(Mars-Rahu Obstacle), Srinivasa Mangapuram Kalyanam(Mercury=Srinivasa Energy), Durga for Sustaining Marriage

The same marriage question is taken through the Chara daśā of the Navāṁśa, read simply: what house the daśā sign is, how its lord is placed, and the chart from that sign. Aquarius, running until May 2012, is only the 6th house, and Pisces after it is the 7th and better; but the lord of the daśā sign transiting the daśā sign, aspecting it, exalted or in own sign makes a daśā give very good results, and Saturn is exalted in Libra, the 9th from Aquarius, in February 2012. The conditional daśā that applies in this Navāṁśa is Chaturaśīti-sama (10th lord in the 10th), not Aṣṭottarī, and its Mercury–Mercury period adds some hope. The remedies follow from the chart: Subrahmaṇya to get married, because Mars the 8th lord and Rāhu obstruct; Durgā afterwards to keep the marriage, because Moon–Rāhu is there for life; and a Śrīnivāsa Kalyāṇam at Śrīnivāsa Maṅgāpuram, because Mercury is the key planet of the Navāṁśa. The teacher puts the odds at 30–70 or 40–60.

Key principle

The rule is: when the lord of the daśā sign is either transiting in the daśā sign, or aspecting it, or is exalted, or in own sign, that daśā will give very good results. Daśā lord in the 9th house, exalted, can give marriage.

Example Chart

Example chart — woman, marriage delayed (1980)
May 21, 1980 · 4:21 PM IST · India
Open the D-9: Virgo lagna, so Aquarius (the Chara daśā sign until May 2012) is the 6th house and Pisces, the next, is the 7th. Moon and Rāhu are in Aries in the 8th and their lord Mars is debilitated in Cancer — the pair the Subrahmaṇya remedy answers. In the rāśi chart Mars and Rāhu are together in Leo in the 12th. The class reads Mercury in own sign Gemini in the 10th of the D-9 with Jupiter, which is the 10th-lord-in-10th condition for Chaturaśīti-sama daśā; cast here Mercury falls in Taurus in the 9th, and Saturn in Scorpio does not aspect Gemini as the class has it.

Chara Dasha of D9 — Transit of the Dasha-Sign Lord

This continues the marriage question of the same chart (woman born 1980, D-9 lagna Virgo, D-9 Viṁśottarī of the 8th lord Mars running).

Which daśā: the Chara daśā of D-9 as Parāśara gives it, not Nārāyaṇa daśā.

  • A student asks why. The teacher: Nārāyaṇa daśā comes from tradition, not clearly from any book; it is attributed to one line of Parāśara, and that is not a clear thing. "We are sticking to what Parāśara talks."
  • A student asks whether the three-part rule is applied. It is not. The reading is: what house is the daśā sign, how is its lord placed, and how is the chart with that sign as lagna.

Aquarius Chara daśā (until May 2012):

  • Aquarius is the 6th house of the D-9.
  • "Compared to that, Pisces is a better daśā for getting married, because it is the 7th house."
  • The one thing in favour of Aquarius: its lord Saturn aspects the lagna lord and the 7th lord. "Quite honestly, it is not really showing marriage that well."

The transit rule:

"When the lord of the daśā sign is either transiting in the daśā sign, or aspecting it, or is exalted, or in own sign, that daśā will give very good results."

  • Checked for February 1, 2012, taking Aquarius as lagna: Saturn is transiting Libra, his exaltation sign, the 9th from Aquarius.
  • "Daśā lord in the 9th house, exalted, can give marriage. So there is a chance of marriage during this period."

Pisces Chara daśā (from May 2012): named as the better daśā because it is the 7th house. The teacher says "we will go there later" and the class does not return to it.

Convergence: February 2012 comes out of the Viṁśottarī antardaśā (Ketu), the Tājaka annual chart (Jupiter's period, Māgha māsa) and the Chara daśā transit. The teacher fixes on that window and moves to remedies.

Conditional Dasha — Chaturasiti-sama

  • Chaturaśīti-sama daśā applies when the 10th lord is in the 10th house. In this Navāṁśa Mercury, the 10th lord, is in the 10th. So the condition is met in D-9.
  • By it, Mercury–Mercury is running; the Mercury daśā started the previous year.
  • Mercury is the lagna lord.

"So there is some hope. Things can materialise if they are already talking."

  • Bottom line for the native: "Things are dicey. You have some weak combinations in the horoscope, but there is some hope. Do some pūjās."

Remedies

What she was already doing (the student's earlier advice): propitiate Lakṣmī and fast on Saturdays. The teacher: that is perfectly fine. "Any devatā will eventually give you that if you worship with a particular goal."

The reasoning:

  • Lagna lord Mercury is very strong in own sign in the Navāṁśa. Mercury can be strengthened.
  • The other way is to address what denies: Moon and Rāhu sit in a sign of Mars in the Navāṁśa, and Mars, the 8th lord, is the one delaying the marriage.
  • The student had suggested Durgā for Moon–Rāhu. The teacher: Durgā is a good idea and can take care of debilitated Mars too.
  • For Mars, Subrahmaṇya. For Rāhu also: Rāhu shows sarpas and Subrahmaṇya is associated with them.
  • In the natal Rāśi chart too, Mars and Rāhu are together in the 12th house with a bunch of planets.

Subrahmaṇya — to get married:

  • "Durgā is okay, but in my opinion Subrahmaṇya is better."
  • Any prayer of Subrahmaṇya is fine. A stotra that prays to him as the husband of Vallī is especially good: worshipping him as a husband is auspicious for getting married.
  • The mūla mantra with bījākṣaras is also fine to give.
  • About half an hour of Subrahmaṇya worship every day.
  • She can come to the temple on every Skanda Ṣaṣṭhī.

Durgā — to keep the marriage:

  • The Moon–Rāhu combination is in the natal Navāṁśa, so it is there for life.
  • Mars is running now and Mars is the dispositor of Moon and Rāhu, so Subrahmaṇya first.

"To keep the marriage, Durgā will be useful in the long run, basically to keep the fights from being there. But to get married, a male devatā, especially Subrahmaṇya, is a better idea."

  • If she has time she can do both. Continue the fast for life if possible; it helps sustain the marriage.

Śrīnivāsa Maṅgāpuram (near Tirupati) — suggested because of the Rāhu influence and because Mercury is so strong:

  • This is where Śrīnivāsa and Padmāvatī were married.
  • A very powerful place with calm energy, hardly any crowd — "much better than Tirupati actually". It is not Alamelu Maṅgāpuram, the Padmāvatī temple; it is further away.
  • Have a Śrīnivāsa Kalyāṇam performed there, and if possible go and pray there.
  • "Given that Mercury is a key planet in the Navāṁśa, that can really help her get married."
  • It may not be practical since she lives in the US; on her next trip to India.

The odds: "There is a 30–70 or 40–60 kind of chance. It is not a 100% chance, because the Mahādaśā itself is not very conducive. With some prayer the probability can be maximised."

  • Had Mercury or Jupiter daśā been running with the same Moon–Rāhu, she would have been fine. The trouble is the 8th house being this strong and the daśā of its lord running.
