Example Chart — D9: Saturn Yogakaraka=Marriage Feb 2007 (Saturn MD+AD); Ketu(A8 Lord in 11H from A8)=Divorce 2008; Saturn+Mercury=12L+8L from UL=Double Divorce Activator; Saturn/Rahu in 12H from Arudha PROMOTES It; Venus AD 2012=Best Marriage Candidate (Yogakaraka+Lagna Lord); UL Lord in UL Itself=Very Determined to Marry; Prashna July 2011=Venus Combust+Saturn Opposing UL=Not This Year
A marriage case worked from the navamsa and its arudhas. The native married in February 2007, separated in March 2008 and was divorced in January 2009, and asks when he will marry again. The recorded time is moved three minutes so that the D9 lagna is vargottama and the dasha for a vargottama lagna applies; marriage and break then both fall in Saturn dasha, Saturn antardasha. Saturn, yogakaraka and dispositor of the 7th lord, gives the marriage; the same Saturn with Mercury is the 12th and 8th lord from UL and sits in the 12th from A8, which gives the break. The annual navamsa charts of 2006 and 2007 confirm both events, the second through Ketu, a lord of A8 placed in the 11th from A8. A prashna of 11 July 2011 shows delay (combust Venus in the 7th, Saturn in the UL), and the 2012 annual navamsa with the natal Venus antardasha points to August–September 2012. Remedies, the 7th from Venus for the wife, and the D7 for children close the reading.
Key principle
In Saturn dasha, Saturn antardasha, the marriage happened as well as the break happened, because he is strongly linked to both A8 and the UL.
Example Chart
Marriage Case — The Question
A man living in the United States, once married and divorced, wants to know when he will marry again. Three or more matches have each run for two or three months and then been dropped. He asks what is obstructing, when it will happen and what he can do.
Events given
- B.Sc. in computer science, 1992–95
- First trip abroad, to Japan, January 2002
- Arrived in the United States, 22 November 2004
- Married 8 February 2007, in India
- Separated 29 March 2008
- Divorced 30 January 2009
- M.S., October 2008 to February 2010
Rasi chart — relations in general
- 7th lord is in the 6th house.
- Sun and Saturn, enemies, are in the 7th. The Sun is a functional benefic; Saturn is a functional malefic.
- This is not only about a wife. Making and keeping relationships of any kind is a difficulty.
Marriage Case — Natal D9, Marriage and Break in One Period
Finding the dasha (and the birth time)
The recorded time is 8:07 PM. The navamsa lagna is Libra and could be Virgo.
- Sun is in the navamsa lagna → Shashtihayani dasha. Marriage falls in Jupiter dasha, Mars antardasha. Jupiter is the 6th lord with no link to the 7th. It does not fit.
- That Sun is debilitated in Libra, so his being in lagna may not carry weight. Next is Shodashottari. Marriage falls in Moon dasha — 10th lord in the 11th. "Nothing that makes you say, wow, that makes sense." Virgo lagna also gives Shodashottari, with Moon as 11th lord in the 12th. No better.
- Move the time back three minutes, to 8:04 PM. The navamsa lagna comes to 2°21' Libra, the first navamsa of Libra: vargottama. The dasha for a vargottama lagna applies (the 100-year dasha, in which Saturn has 30 years).
With that dasha, marriage, separation and divorce all fall in Saturn mahadasha, Saturn antardasha. The antardashas then run Sun, Moon (running in July 2011), Venus (from 2012).
The teacher says the rectification is not certain. One more minute keeps the lagna in Libra but takes it out of the vargottama navamsa.
The navamsa (Libra lagna)
- Saturn and Mercury in Taurus, the 8th house: Mercury 22°, Saturn 24°.
- Venus, lagna lord and 8th lord, aspects them within 3° (graha drishti).
- Mars, the 7th lord, is in Aquarius, the 5th house, close to Jupiter.
- UL is in Aquarius, with Mars almost on it.
- Moon, the 10th lord, is in Leo, the 11th house, at 22°.
- A8 has Mercury as lord, and Saturn and Mercury are in the 12th from it.
Can Saturn give marriage? Yes
- For Libra he is the yogakaraka.
- He joins the 9th lord Mercury: a raja yoga.
- He is the dispositor of the 7th lord Mars.
- He is in the 8th house, so the marriage comes with tension, anxiety and ups and downs. But the dasha of a yogakaraka can give marriage.
Can the same Saturn give the break? Yes
The usual marks — 7th lord in the 8th, or 8th lord in the 7th — are absent. The 7th lord is in the 5th. A student suggests Saturn and Mercury exchange results; the teacher refuses: "We stopped doing that." The break is read from the arudhas.
From UL. Giving up the UL is the 12th from it. Killing it is the 8th from it.
- Saturn is the UL lord, and also the 12th lord from UL.
- Mercury is the 8th lord from UL.
- Saturn–Mercury together = the giving up and the destruction of the UL. They are 2° apart. Had Mercury been far away, Saturn would have been free of him.
From A8. A6 is tangible quarrels. A8 is the mrityu pada, the death of the thing.
- Mercury, lord of A8, is in the 8th house from lagna. He ties A8 to the 8th house.
- Venus, who aspects them, is also the 8th lord. So 8th house, 8th lord and A8 are all joined to Saturn and Mercury.
- Saturn is in the 12th from A8. For Saturn that is a raja yoga for the arudha (Part 9). Saturn enhances A8.
So Saturn–Saturn gave the marriage and gave the break. He is tied to the UL and to A8 alike.
Arudha Rule — Benefics in the 2nd, Saturn and Rahu in the 12th
Parashara's rule, as the teacher recalls it. He tells the class to go back to the chapter on arudha padas.
- Mercury, Venus, Jupiter in the 2nd (or 11th) from an arudha nourish that arudha.
- For Saturn and Rahu those places are poor. The 12th from the arudha is excellent for them: there they nourish it.
- Saturn is the planet of ignition. In the 12th from an arudha he ignites it. That is a raja yoga for that arudha.
- Any planet in the 11th from an arudha promotes it. If the lord of the arudha is himself in the 11th from it, "nothing like it."
- The rule does not care whether the arudha is welcome. It raised AL and A5 in Vivekananda's D10. It raises A8 here.
- When reading who occupies or aspects an arudha, the inherent nature of the planet counts for more than its functional nature. Mars is the planet of haste. Mars almost on the UL means haste in the marriage — it may happen suddenly and break suddenly.
"Saturn is the planet of ignition. So if he is in the 12th house from an arudha, that is a raja yoga for that arudha."
Marriage Case — Annual Navamsa Charts for 2006 and 2007
2006 annual navamsa — the year of marriage (February 2007)
Lagna Sagittarius.
- Against marriage: 6th lord Venus in lagna. 8th lord Moon in the 7th. 7th lord Mercury in the 6th. UL in the 8th house, Cancer.
- For it: lagna lord Jupiter in his own sign in a quadrant, with Ketu — Hamsa Mahapurusha yoga. Sun and Mars together: 9th lord with 5th lord, a yoga of the two trine lords.
- From UL: Jupiter is in the 9th from it, in his own sign, and protects it. Sun and Mars are in a quadrant from it. Mercury is in the 11th from it and promotes it.
7th lord in the 6th. The 6th is the house of quarrels, but the 7th lord's own agenda is to give marriage.
- The lord of any house placed in the 12th from that house gives its result after going far away, or after giving something up.
- 7th lord in the 12th from the 7th: he travels far and marries. He flew to India to marry.
- Mercury is in a friendly sign. For Mercury as a planet the 6th is a good house. No obstruction.
Dasha. The lagna is weak, with Venus on it. From Chandra lagna the 10th lord Jupiter is in the 10th, so Chaturashiti-sama dasha of the navamsa is used. The marriage fell in Mercury dasha, Jupiter antardasha: 7th lord and lagna lord.
2007 annual navamsa — the year of separation (March 2008)
Lagna Leo.
- Lagna lord Sun is in the 3rd house, debilitated. The year before he was in his own sign with Hamsa yoga.
- Both 7th lords, Saturn and Rahu, are in the 8th house, with Mars. Saturn–Mars–Rahu is an evil combination: violence and sudden events.
- Mars owns A6 and A8.
Dasha. Chandra hora, Sukla paksha → regular Vimshottari of the navamsa, compressed into the year. Ketu's period ran 21 March to 12 April 2008. The separation was on 29 March.
Why Ketu.
- He is on the 2nd–8th axis, opposite Saturn, Mars and Rahu in the 8th. The 8th is the death of the marriage.
- The end of a marriage is a tangible event, so look at A8. A8 is in Scorpio. Its lords are Mars and Ketu.
- Ketu is in the 11th house from A8. The lord of A8 in the 11th from A8: A8 flourishes.
"A8 lord in the 11th from A8 — done."
Marriage Case — When Next: Antardashas, Prashna, the 2012 Chart
Moon antardasha (running, 2011) — possible, not strong
- Sukla paksha Moon: a natural benefic.
- He aspects the UL from the 7th from it (graha drishti; Moon at 22° Leo, UL in Aquarius).
- He aspects the 7th lord Mars and Jupiter, who are close together there.
- He is the 10th lord in the 11th: a wife found at another place, or through a friend.
- A second marriage is not read from the 8th from UL. "UL is marriage and we will see UL."
Venus antardasha (2012) — the strong one
- Venus is lagna lord. From UL he is the yogakaraka.
- He aspects the UL lord Saturn.
- Yogakaraka Saturn, 9th lord Mercury and lagna lord Venus form an extremely close raja yoga.
- Saturn–Venus, above all Saturn–Venus–Venus, is a powerful period for marriage. "Second half of next year is a much better candidate for getting married than the current period."
2011 annual chart — unusable
The rasi lagna is at the very start of Taurus and could be Aries. The navamsa lagna is at the start of Capricorn and could be Sagittarius. The time is not known to that accuracy. "Give up. There is no point in even trying."
Prashna — will marriage happen very soon?
11 July 2011, 8:23:43 PM, 4 hours behind GMT, cast for the place of the class in Massachusetts. Lagna 25°33' Sagittarius. Only the rasi chart is read.
- Rahu is in lagna, but far from the lagna degree and moving away, toward the 12th. Not much of a problem.
- 7th house: Sun, Venus, Ketu. Ketu is far off. Sun and Venus are close: Venus is combust.
- Sun and Venus are the 9th and 6th lords. Their conjunction is a duryoga, sitting in the 7th.
- 7th lord Mercury is in the 8th. Not a great placement for a 7th lord, though for Mercury as a planet the 8th is not bad.
- UL is in the 10th house, at about 5°. Saturn is in that sign. UL contains Saturn: the tangible event of marriage is delayed.
- Verdict: average. A decent chance in general, but probably not this year.
2012 annual navamsa — the year
Lagna 5° Pisces.
- Jupiter 10°, Venus 16°, Mercury 25°, all in lagna. None is a great functional benefic here; Venus is even a malefic.
- But Jupiter is lagna lord, Mercury is 7th lord, Venus is the karaka of marriage. Lagna lord, 7th lord and karaka together in lagna.
- UL is at 10° Cancer. The three are in the 9th from UL.
- The UL lord is in the UL itself, close to its degree. The UL is very strong.
"When UL lord is in UL, he is determined to get married."
Dasha. The 7th lord is in lagna, but at 25° against a lagna of 5° — almost in the 2nd house, so that condition is not taken. Chandra hora, Krishna paksha → Shodashottari of the navamsa.
- Jupiter dasha, August to end of September 2012: lagna lord in lagna, aspects the 7th house, aspects the UL and its lord, dispositor of AL. AL is status, here marital status. The first strong candidate.
- Moon and Mercury dashas, 19 December 2012 to 30 March 2013: also a strong period.
The prediction
- Some chance in 2011 and the first half of 2012, but the technique gives nothing firm there.
- A strong chance in the second half of 2012, most likely August–September 2012. The natal Venus antardasha and the annual chart agree.
- Advice: do not hurry the choice. Mars on the UL gives a pull toward haste.
Marriage Case — Remedies and Remaining Weaknesses
Why a remedy is needed
- The whole Saturn mahadasha carries Saturn's link with A8: in the 12th from A8, with the A8 lord, in the 8th from lagna. There will be anxiety or disturbance in marriage. So that it does not recur, propitiate Saturn and Mercury.
- The raja yoga of Saturn, Mercury and Venus involves the 8th house. A raja yoga in the 8th fructifies after much effort or suffering, and late in life. It does promise a happy marriage, but late; worship brings it earlier.
- Chara karakas are not yet in use in this method, but the teacher notes: atmakaraka Jupiter (27°17' Pisces) and darakaraka Sun (0°11' Libra) are in mutual shashtashtaka, the 6th and 8th from each other. At the level of the soul there is a difficulty with marriage.
The remedies
- Saturn in a benefic sign with Mercury shows Venkateshwara. Taurus is Venus's sign and Venus aspects, so Padmavati goes with him. Worship Padmavati and Venkateshwara every Saturday (Friday is possible; Saturday is easier). A picture of the two will do.
- Chant Lakshmi Ashtottaram, then Vishnu Ashtottaram, in that order, and repeat the pair. Vishnu Sahasranama is also good.
- Fasting on the day of the UL is to be taken from the natal chart, not from the divisional chart used for dasha. The rectification may have changed the UL; check it.
Will the second wife be a divorcee?
"It will be mostly speculation. We are not good enough astrologers to do that."
- Tradition, not confirmed: the circumstances in which the wife comes are seen from the 7th from Venus. In this navamsa the 7th from Venus holds Saturn and Mercury.
- Mercury, retrograde here: someone unpredictable, erratic.
- Saturn: traditional and orthodox; or lowly; or, where Saturn gives the wife, a widow or a woman married before.
- So she may be a divorcee. There is no clear way to say.
Marriage Case — Children from the D7
The teacher will not split it into "first child of the second wife". "Children are children." Read the D7 as a chart: lagna strong, 5th strong, functional benefics strong.
The D7 (Aries lagna)
- Venus is in lagna. A neutral, slightly benefic planet here. The lagna is slightly afflicted.
- Lagna lord Mars is in the 11th house. Good for a lagna lord, and good for Mars as a planet (for Mars and the Sun the 3rd, 6th and 11th are good houses). The sign is Saturn's: a permanent neutral and a temporary friend, so a friendly sign on balance. The lagna is strong.
- 9th house: afflicted by Rahu. But the 9th lord Jupiter is strong in a quadrant from the 9th. Fortune is there.
- A5 is at 11° Pisces and Jupiter is at 20° Pisces. Jupiter with A5 is the one who blesses children.
- 5th house: aspected closely by a malefic Mercury (20°) and a benefic Mars (18°). Neutral on balance.
- 5th lord Sun is in the 3rd house, the 11th from the 5th. The lord of a house in the 11th from it is well placed, and the 3rd is a good house for the Sun.
- Sun, Mars and Jupiter are the planets that carry children in this chart.
Timing
- Conditional dasha: the 7th lord Venus is in lagna, so Dwisaptati-sama should apply, though Venus is not in a friendly sign. Saturn's dasha is running. He is with A5, so there is some likelihood, but he is a malefic and does not himself show children. The teacher is unsure this is the right dasha here.
- Vimshottari of the D7 always applies. Sun dasha runs from January 2013 to 2018. The Sun is the well-placed 5th lord. A favourable dasha.
- Sign dasha (its name is not clear in the recording): Leo, the 5th, has just begun and has a strong chance soon after marriage. Virgo follows from 2013, and Virgo can give a child because it is the 7th from A5. Parashara keeps pairing an arudha with the 7th from it, and any planet aspecting an arudha can give it. Arudhas are to be used in a sign dasha too, not only houses and planets. Some events that made no sense before come out this way.
- Transit: Jupiter in Taurus in the second half of 2013, aspecting Virgo. Jupiter exalted in Cancer in 2014–15 — the strongest.
- Prediction: a chance in 2013–14, most likely 2014–15. The years to 2020 are promising.
Remedy for children
- Jupiter is the key planet, but the Sun is the 5th lord and his dasha is coming.
- Aditya Hridayam three times every morning — ten to fifteen minutes — with a sankalpa for a good child.
- First let him marry. This is for after the marriage.
Key Rules
| Rule | Teaching |
|---|---|
| Navamsa of a divisional chart | Take the divisional chart as rasi and find its navamsa from the divisional longitudes. Vargottama of a D10 or D9 lagna is judged this way. |
| Dasha of a divisional chart | Special conditions first, by longitude and with a planet strong enough to carry them. Otherwise hora of lagna and paksha. |
| Hora and paksha | Chandra hora + Sukla = Vimshottari. Surya hora + Krishna = Vimshottari from Ardra. The other two = Shodashottari. (Lomasha) |
| Dispositor of AL and A5 | Gives name and image in his dasha. |
| Planet in the 11th from an arudha | Makes that arudha flourish; strongest when it is the arudha's own lord. |
| Benefics in the 2nd from an arudha | Feed it. |
| Saturn or Rahu in the 12th from an arudha | Ignite it: a raja yoga for that arudha, welcome or not. |
| Functional malefic in the 8th from A9 | Takes away the tangible guru in his dasha. |
| Two functional malefics in the 7th of D9, with the 8th lord there | Marriage denied. |
| Upapada | Giving. In a navamsa strong in dharma and weak in the 7th it shows giving to disciples and an order. |
| 12th lord and 8th lord from UL together | Giving up and destruction of the UL. |
| A8 | The tangible end of a thing. Its lord in the 11th from it, or Saturn in the 12th from it, brings the break. |
| House lord in the 12th from his house | Gives the result after travelling far or giving something up. |
| UL lord in UL | The person is determined to marry. |
| Saturn in the UL (prashna) | The tangible event of marriage is delayed. |
| Raja yoga in the 8th | Comes after effort or suffering, and late. |
| 7th from an arudha | Can give the result of that arudha, in a sign dasha as well. |
| Deity | Atmakaraka from the rasi, placed in D20; the 12th from it, its occupant and stronger lord. Rahu in a martial sign = Durga or Kali. |
