Example Chart (1974): D9 Rahu Dasha=Marriage Feb 2002 (Rahu Linked 7H From 3 References); D7 Jupiter MD+Saturn AD=Child Nov 2007 (Saturn Stronger: In 5H From Lagna+Aspects 5H From Moon); Child's D12 Rahu Dasha=Father Losses(Rahu in 12H From Cancer Reference); D10 Jupiter(3L+6L=Malefic in 12H)=Career Instability; Mercury(9L in Own Sign)=AD Recovery Soon
A man born in 1974 married in February 2002, had a son in November 2007 after a long wait, and has had an unstable career ever since. The two known events are checked first: Rāhu gave the marriage because he links with the 7th from lagna, Moon and Sun in the Navāṁśa; and the child came in Jupiter–Saturn, not Jupiter–Jupiter, because in the Saptāṁśa Saturn sits in the 5th from lagna and aspects the 5th house and 5th lord from Moon, while the kāraka Jupiter has only weak links. The child's chart has Saṅkrānti doṣa, and in its D-12 the running Rāhu daśā shows losses for the father until 2017 — but the teacher insists this only adds to what the father's own chart must already show. That is Jupiter in the D-10: a functional malefic afflicting the debilitated lagna lord Venus from all three references. Mercury antardaśā, the 2011–12 Tājaka chart and Jupiter's station opposite the D-10 lagna degree all point to a job in December–January, or by March–April.
Key principle
The fact that it did not happen in Jupiter–Jupiter, it had to wait till Jupiter–Saturn, means Jupiter is an okay candidate but not a strong candidate. Saturn must have been a better candidate — that is why it had to wait till Saturn, even though Jupiter is the kāraka.
Example Chart
D9 Navamsa — Marriage in Rahu Dasha
The case: Man born September 4, 1974, 6:35 PM IST. Married February 15, 2002. A son born November 15, 2007 after a long wait. Career unstable since the birth; out of a job since June 2011. The family asks what the combination is.
The teacher checks the known events before the question. The D-9 Viṁśottarī daśā at marriage (2002) was Rāhu.
From lagna:
- Rāhu is with the 5th lord Mercury.
- Rāhu aspects Ketu, the co-lord of the 7th house (Scorpio), by his 7th aspect.
- So Rāhu links with the 5th and the 7th.
From Moon:
- Rāhu conjoins the 7th lord.
- Rāhu aspects the 7th house by graha dṛṣṭi. (A student notes the rāśi dṛṣṭi; the teacher: that we do not care about here — he has graha dṛṣṭi on the 7th.)
From Sun:
- Rāhu has a full aspect on the 2nd house as well as the 5th, 7th and 9th. By it he aspects the 7th house from Sun.
"He is having aspect on the 7th house from Sun. He is having aspect on the 7th house from Moon and is also conjoining the 7th lord from Moon. And from lagna he is aspecting the 7th lord. So basically, based on these aspects, Rāhu can give marriage."
Cast-chart note: a modern-ephemeris chart gives the same D-9 lagna (Taurus), Sun, Moon and Mercury. It puts Rāhu in Capricorn, one sign behind Mercury, not with him in Aquarius as the class has it.
D7 Saptamsa — Child in Jupiter–Saturn, Not Jupiter–Jupiter
The son was born in November 2007. The D-7 Viṁśottarī period was Jupiter Mahādaśā, Saturn antardaśā.
"The fact that it did not happen in Jupiter–Jupiter, it had to wait till Jupiter–Saturn, means Jupiter is an okay candidate but not a strong candidate. Saturn must have been a better candidate. That is why it had to wait till Saturn, even though Jupiter is the kāraka."
Jupiter (D-7 lagna Cancer; Jupiter in Gemini):
- From Sun: Jupiter is the dispositor of the 5th lord. He is also the dispositor of the 9th lord and aspects him. The 9th is taken as the house of fortune. So he links with the 5th and 9th from Sun.
- From Moon: no link with the 9th. On the 5th house he has only argalā. He does not aspect the house or its lord. "It is a weak link."
- From lagna: the 5th is Scorpio; its lord Mars is in a sign of Jupiter. Jupiter does not aspect it. "There is some link, but it is not a very strong link."
Saturn (in Scorpio):
- From lagna: Saturn is the 7th and 8th lord, a slight functional benefic, and he sits in the 5th house.
- From Moon (Capricorn): Saturn is the lagna lord and aspects the lagna (3rd aspect). He aspects the 5th house Taurus (7th aspect). He aspects the 5th lord Venus by his 10th aspect — a friendly aspect, since Saturn and Venus are friends.
- From Sun: the 5th is Aries. Saturn has no link with the house; he has a half aspect on its lord Mars.
"He has a very strong link on the 5th from Moon and a pretty strong link on the 5th from lagna, because he occupies it. So two of the references he has covered."
- Saturn is a great candidate, and Jupiter–Saturn gave the child.
- Both events fit, so the birth time is accepted as given.
Child's Chart — Sankranti Dosha and the Father in D12
Child's birth data: November 15, 2007, 9:41 AM IST; India. A boy.
Why look at it: the father's trouble began with the birth. The student had already checked the pañcāṅga for a gaṇḍānta or a nakṣatra needing śānti and found none.
Saṅkrānti doṣa:
- Lagna is Sagittarius with Jupiter in it.
- The Sun is at 0°01' Scorpio — he has just entered the sign. That is saṅkrānti.
- A Saṅkrānti doṣa śānti pūjā should be done. The procedure is in BPHS.
- Jupiter is also on a sign border. "Being on the border is not the problem. If the Sun has just entered the sign, then it will be a problem."
D-12 for the father:
- The 9th house shows the father. Take the 9th from lagna and the 9th from Sun, and also the 9th from Moon. "Sun and lagna are more important than Moon when you are seeing father."
- The child was born in Rāhu daśā, which runs until 2017. The question is how the father fares during the child's Rāhu daśā.
- 9th from lagna is Capricorn. Counted from Capricorn, Rāhu is in the 6th and aspects the 12th house and the 12th lord Jupiter.
- 9th from Sun is Cancer. Counted from Cancer, Rāhu is in the 12th house.
- "Rāhu basically does not like Jupiter, so Rāhu's aspect on Jupiter is not good." An inimical aspect on the 12th house and 12th lord from one reference, placement in the 12th from the other.
- The 12th shows losses and compromises. A student asks why it should mean career. The teacher: it need not — "it shows some losses for the father, some disappointments and losses".
After Rāhu: Jupiter daśā. From one reference Jupiter is the 6th lord in the 6th, from the other the 12th lord in the 12th — Harṣa Yoga and Vimala Yoga. That will be a better period.
How far to take it:
"It is unfair to say it is happening because of him. There must be some indication in his own chart. This is basically adding to it."
- Until 2017 there may be some instability going by the child's chart.
- A student asks whether Rāhu should be propitiated. The teacher: no — propitiation only from the father's own chart. In the child's name, get the Saṅkrānti doṣa śānti done.
Cast-chart note: with a modern ephemeris and Lahiri ayanāṁśa the Sun on this date and time is about a degree and a half short of Scorpio, and the D-12 placements of Rāhu, Jupiter and Sun differ from those read in class. The saṅkrānti reading rests on the teacher's calculation settings.
Father's D10 — Jupiter Dasha and Career Instability
D-10 lagna: Libra, not on a border. The D-10 Viṁśottarī period running is Jupiter–Mercury.
The career became unstable in 2007, in Jupiter–Jupiter and Jupiter–Saturn. "Once Jupiter kicked in, the career has become unstable. It must be Jupiter who is doing this."
From lagna:
- Jupiter is the 3rd and 6th lord — a functional malefic — in the 12th house of loss.
- Alone, the 6th lord in the 12th would have been a Viparīta Rāja Yoga. But he is with the lagna lord Venus, and that makes it worse.
- Venus is debilitated and afflicted by Jupiter, a functional malefic who is also his enemy.
- Lagna lord and 6th lord together is a duryoga.
- The Viparīta Rāja Yoga still applies in part, because Venus is also the 8th lord: 8th and 6th lords in the 12th. "Towards the end of the daśā some better things may happen."
From Moon: Jupiter is the 8th and 11th lord, again a functional malefic, and again he afflicts the debilitated lagna lord Venus.
From Sun: Venus is a yogakāraka, but debilitated. Jupiter is again a functional malefic, afflicting the yogakāraka.
"From all the three references, Jupiter is a functional malefic and afflicting either a lagna lord or a yogakāraka. In both cases weakening it. So things are not looking auspicious."
Mercury antardaśā (until February 2013):
- From lagna: 9th lord in the 9th.
- From Moon: 5th lord in own sign.
- From Sun: 9th lord in own sign. A student points out he is also the 6th lord from Sun. The teacher: "6th lord in the 6th is okay."
- A student objects that the job was lost in this very antardaśā. The teacher: it is a three-year period, and overall it has to be beneficial.
"I do not expect this to be a long, drawn-out kind of problem. He is likely to find something soon."
Remedy: propitiate Jupiter, going by his own chart. The student proposes Gāyatrī. The teacher: possible, but simply worship Śiva — Sadāśiva — or recite Jupiter's own navagraha stotra. That is sufficient.
Lagna-based refinements are left out for now: "We do not consider the ārūḍha lagna and argalās in this case. We keep them aside for now. We will eventually."
Cast-chart note: a modern-ephemeris chart gives the same D-10 lagna, Moon and Mercury. It puts Jupiter and Venus in Leo (11th), one sign short of the Virgo 12th house the class reads.
The Year 2011–12 — When the Job Comes
His birthday had just passed, so the 2011–12 annual chart is read. For annual charts the group is using Tājaka only at this point, not Tithi Praveśa.
- The lagna lord Jupiter is in the 11th house. Good, but he is afflicted by Venus, so not that strong.
- The 10th lord is extremely powerful in the 10th house. "That is the greatest blessing."
- The period running is Rāhu's. Rāhu is in the 5th, but the teacher is not sure he can give a break.
- Jupiter's period begins after November 22 and can give a lucky break. A student objects that Jupiter is the troublemaker in the natal D-10. The teacher: in this annual chart he is an auspicious planet.
- Mercury's period, in March–April, is the best.
Prediction: December–January is very likely to bring a job. If not, March–April is as good as certain. If he already has something by then, in March–April he will start enjoying the work. "Very soon his career will be on track. I am not concerned about his career."
Stationary Transits of Jupiter and Saturn
The teacher adds one more check.
The rule:
- When a planet turns retrograde or direct it slows down and stays within about half a degree to a degree for many days. That point has a strong effect.
- Whatever natal position in the natal divisional charts is conjoined or aspected by the stationary planet at that degree gets triggered.
- Only the slow planets, Jupiter and Saturn, trigger events this way.
- Important events fall within about a month either side of the station. Whether the house triggered is good or bad tells the kind of event.
Applied here:
- Jupiter is stationary on December 30, 2011 at 7°26' Aries.
- No natal D-10 planet is near that degree. But the D-10 lagna is at about 8° Libra, and Jupiter aspects it by his 7th aspect.
- "That is quite auspicious. So around that time, December–January, some new thing can get triggered." This agrees with Jupiter's period in the annual chart.
- Saturn is stationary in February at about 5° Libra. He makes no interesting contact with the natal positions.
- "Stationary transits happen many times. It is not necessary that something interesting be happening there."
Final advice: worship Jupiter for the father; Saṅkrānti doṣa śānti for the child. "The child is not really bringing bad luck. It coincides with some bad luck in his own chart until 2017."
