Example Chart — D9 (1981): Krishna Paksha+Surya Hora=Shodashottari (NOT Vimshottari); Venus MD=Yogakaraka in 2H+5L=Marriage Conducive; Warning: Sun(8L in 9H Afflicted by Ketu) AD in 2013=Problems; Saturn Debil+Neecha Bhanga Aspects Lagna=Strong Despite Weakness; Prediction: Marry Before March 2013

A woman born in 1981 cannot find a match; the question is when she will marry. The Navamsa has Capricorn rising: the lagna lord Saturn is debilitated but has neecha bhanga and aspects his own sign, the 7th lord Moon is in the 12th (the 6th from the 7th), and the weak point is the 8th lord Sun within 2½° of the badhaka lord Ketu in the 3rd house, which is the 9th from the 7th — the fortune of the marriage. The page then shows why Shodashottari and not Vimshottari is the dasha to use: the Navamsa lagna is in Chandra hora and the birth is in Krishna paksha. Shodashottari of the Navamsa gives Venus–Venus now, and Venus is the yogakaraka and 5th lord in the 2nd, so the teacher expects marriage before March 2013 and warns of tension in 2013–14 when the Sun antardasha runs.

Key principle

It is the Venus dasha that is running right now. So this is actually a conducive dasha for getting married. In 2013, Venus–Sun will start, and Sun is a problematic dasha. But there is a very good chance that before 2013 March she will get married. So the next year and a half is basically a very good time.

Example chart — marriage timing from the Navamsa (1981)
Aug 16, 1981 · 5:31 AM PDT (7 h west of GMT) · 116°32'W, 33°49'N
Read the Navamsa. Capricorn rises. Sun (8th lord) and Ketu (badhaka lord) are together in Pisces, the 3rd house and the 9th from the 7th. Venus, the yogakaraka, is in Aquarius, the 2nd. In class the 7th lord Moon is in Sagittarius (12th), Saturn is debilitated in Aries aspecting the lagna, and Mercury is in Gemini (6th); the site's Drik cast puts these three just across a navamsa border (Moon in Capricorn, Saturn and Mercury in Taurus). The Navamsa lagna falls in the first half of Capricorn — Chandra hora — and the birth is on Krishna Pratipat, so Shodashottari applies.

Marriage Timing from the Navamsa — Woman Born 1981

The Question and the Birth Time

  • Her family finds it hard to get a match for her. The question: when will she marry?
  • The Navamsa lagna is not on a border — 7 minutes of leeway on one side, 8 on the other. Rasi and Navamsa are safe.
  • The Dasamsa lagna is on a border. Nothing is known of her career, so it is ignored.
  • The known events carry no information. The teacher assumes the time is right and predicts.

Navamsa Assessment

Before timing the marriage, see whether the Navamsa shows a marriage and what weakness it has.

  • Lagna: Capricorn rises in the Navamsa.
  • Lagna lord Saturn is debilitated, but has neecha bhanga. He also aspects the lagna by his 10th aspect (graha dṛṣṭi from Aries on Capricorn).

"If the lord of a sign aspects the sign, it is powerful for that sign."

  • 7th lord Moon is in the 12th house, Sagittarius. A friendly sign, but the 12th is the 6th from the 7th. Not well placed. Moon in the 12th is also bad in itself.
  • Venus is the yogakaraka (5th and 10th lord) in the 2nd house of family, in an adhimitra rasi. Well placed. A student offered Venus in the 2nd as the weakness; the teacher rejected that.
  • Mercury is the 6th lord in the 6th, in his own sign Gemini. The 6th is a house of quarrel, but the 6th lord in the 6th is good — Harsha yoga. Well placed.
  • Sun is the weakest planet. He is the 8th lord in Pisces, the 3rd house, with Ketu. Ketu is at 22½° Pisces and Sun at 25° Pisces — within 2½° in the Navamsa.
    • Ketu is the badhaka lord (co-lord of Scorpio, the 11th from a movable lagna).
    • The 3rd is the house of initiative and parakrama, the third of the kama trikona.
    • It is also the 9th from the 7th — the fortune of the marriage. That house is afflicted by the 8th lord and the badhaka lord. This is the big weakness of the chart.

Site cast: Capricorn lagna, Sun and Ketu in Pisces and Venus in Aquarius agree. Moon (Capricorn), Saturn (Taurus) and Mercury (Taurus) are each just across a navamsa border from the class positions.

Which Dasha: Shodashottari, Not Vimshottari

  • First attempt: Vimshottari of the Navamsa. Ashtottari does not apply and the lagna is not vargottama. Vimshottari gives Rahu–Mercury, and a student found Mercury a good dasha for marriage.
  • The teacher then applies the standard rule. The birth is in Krishna paksha. The Navamsa lagna is in the first half of Capricorn — Chandra hora.
  • The rule:
    • Chandra hora + Sukla paksha → Vimshottari
    • Surya hora + Krishna paksha → Vimshottari
    • Chandra hora + Krishna paksha → Shodashottari
    • Surya hora + Sukla paksha → Shodashottari
  • Memory aid: in Sukla paksha the Moon is big, so Moon's hora goes with it.
  • Chandra hora in Krishna paksha: Shodashottari applies more than Vimshottari here.

Marriage Timing Prediction

  • Shodashottari of the Navamsa: Venus dasha is running, and Venus–Venus is the antardasha now.
  • Venus is the yogakaraka, in an adhimitra rasi, and the 5th lord of purva punya. A conducive dasha for marriage.
  • In 2013 Venus–Sun starts. Sun is the 8th lord and afflicted. A problematic antardasha.

"If she gets married before then, during Sun dasha there will be some problematic situations, because Sun is the 8th lord and he is afflicted. So during 2013–14 there will be some tension in the marriage. But there is a very good chance that before 2013 March she will get married. So the next year and a half is basically a very good time."

  • A student's software showed different antardasha dates. The cause was the antardasha option: antardashas must start from the mahadasha lord and run in order (F, G, H, A, B … for mahadasha F).
