Example Chart — D4: Mars+Rahu in 9H(From Lagna+Moon=2/3 Convergence)+9th-12th Parivartana(From Sun)=Flourishes Abroad; 5L Saturn Debil in 7H=Weak Desire to Return; Lagna+10L Parivartana=All Residence Changes Career-Driven; Saturn-Venus AD=Staying Abroad; Moon AD 2013=30-35% Return Chance; Mutual Trine+Friendship Rule
The question is whether a man living in the USA will go back to India for good. In D4 (lagna and Moon in Libra) Mars and Rahu are in the 9th; from Sun the 9th lord and bādhaka lord Moon is in the 12th and the 12th lord Venus in the 9th. A link between the 9th, the 12th and the bādhaka sthāna from all three references shows a person who flourishes far from his birthplace. The 5th lord of the motherland, Saturn, is debilitated in the 7th: long visits home, no return. Lagna lord and 10th lord exchange signs, so every change of residence follows the job. Saturn–Venus and the Sun antardaśā keep him abroad; the Moon antardaśā of 2013–14 carries a 30–35% chance. A second chart from the class shows the same method: Jupiter daśā from February 1999 took that native abroad for good in October 1999, and no return shows before Mercury daśā in 2033.
Key principle
So when there is a link between 9th, 12th, and Bādhaka sthāna, it shows somebody who flourishes in a faraway land, in a foreign culture, away from where he is born.
Example Charts
First Chart — Data and Questions
A student brings the chart of a man he does not know personally. The class is held in late 2011.
Birth data as given: August 27, 1977, 10:10 PM IST (5h30m east of GMT); India, 78°30'E, 17°27'N. Male.
Rāśi lagna: 17°52' Aries in the teacher's software.
Known: he lives in the USA and works in software. His only child, a son, was born on August 22, 2009. Nobody knows when he moved abroad.
Questions: (1) Will he go back to India for good, soon? (2) He has a job but is looking for a change — will it happen?
The teacher reads the second question itself as a sign: looking for a change means some instability or discomfort with the present job.
Get events with the data
- Only one event is known. The teacher asks for more in future:
"When somebody wants to find out something, get a few details. When he came here, when he got married, 2 or 3 events, so that we can verify the time."
- The first aim is to rule out a gross error — a wrong day or month, or day and month swapped. Without events, the data "may or may not be useful".
Calculation model
- The teacher's software is set to "calculation options as recommended by the author" (his Surya Siddhanta-based settings). Its longitudes differ from this site's chart. Here the difference matters: the site puts Mercury near 26° Leo, while every statement in class needs Mercury in the 12°–15° Leo range; Rahu and Mars also fall one amsa away in some vargas. The notes below follow the class. Where the site's chart shows something else, it is said.
D4 Chaturthamsa — Will He Go Back to India?
Leeway
- D4 lagna holds for 7 minutes backward and 19 minutes forward of the corrected time. Lower vargas like D4 usually have plenty of leeway unless the lagna is near a border.
Static reading (before any daśā)
In the class chart: lagna Libra with Moon in it; Sun and Mercury in Scorpio; Venus in Cancer; Saturn in Aries; Mars and Rahu in Gemini.
From Lagna and from Moon (both Libra):
- The 5th lord Rahu and the 7th lord Mars are together in the 9th house.
- The 9th and 12th lord Mercury is with the bādhaka lord Sun. (The site's chart has Mercury in Taurus, not with the Sun.)
From Sun (Scorpio):
- The 9th lord Moon — also the bādhaka lord — is in the 12th.
- The 12th lord Venus is in the 9th, which is also the bādhaka sthāna.
- So the 9th and 12th lords are in parivartana.
Reading:
- There is a confluence of the 9th house, the 12th house and the bādhaka sthāna from all three references.
- A student asks whether this is about comfort, or about a strong lagna. Answer: a strong D4 lagna means a very good house that he is happy with. That is not what is being judged here.
- Bādhaka sthāna shows big changes. The 12th shows a change of place away from where one was born. The 9th shows flourishing in a faraway land.
"When there is a link between 9th, 12th and Bādhaka sthāna, it shows somebody who flourishes in a faraway land, in a foreign culture, away from where he is born."
- Without any daśā: he will probably live abroad for most of his life.
The 5th lord — the motherland
- A student asks about Saturn, the 5th lord. The teacher agrees that when Saturn becomes dominant there is a chance of going back.
- But the 5th lord of patriotism is debilitated (Aries), though he aspects the lagna. And he is in the 7th house of long travel.
- So he shows a long trip back to the motherland every couple of years, not going back to stay.
Lagna lord and 10th lord in parivartana
- Lagna lord Venus is in the 10th; 10th lord Moon is in lagna.
- D4 is the chart of residence — not of children or wife. With the 10th lord in lagna, his mind in this area of life is on career.
"All these changes of residence, going abroad or leaving one town and going to another town, everything is driven by career."
- Not "I love living in Florida, let me live there". It is "there is a good job in New Jersey, let me live in New Jersey".
D4 Vimshottari — Saturn mahādaśā
- Saturn is yogakāraka for Libra: he gives what the world sees as good fortune in the matter of residence.
- He is in the 7th: long travels. He aspects the 9th house and Rahu in it (graha dṛṣṭi, 3rd-house aspect).
- A yogakāraka aspecting the 9th and Rahu in the 9th settles him abroad. As 5th lord Saturn has a small chance of taking him back, but only if the antardaśā helps.
Venus antardaśā (running):
- From Sun: 12th lord in the 9th. Nothing more to explain.
- From Lagna and Moon: he is in the 10th, which gives argalā on the 9th (2nd from it) and on the 12th (11th from it). He is also in a trine from the 9th and 12th lord Mercury.
"When two planets are in mutual trine, they benefit each other's agenda, especially if they are friends. If they are enemies, they may not work together."
- Sun is in the same trine, but Sun and Venus may not cooperate. Mercury and Venus are good friends.
- Venus is linked to the 9th and 12th from all references. No return in the next six months.
Sun antardaśā:
- Parashara's rule: when Lagna and Moon are together, or Lagna and Sun are together, give that reference more weight. Here Libra carries a lot of weight.
- From Libra, Sun is the bādhaka lord with the 9th and 12th lord. "Even Venus has some chance, but Sun has practically no chance."
Moon antardaśā:
- From Sun he is a strong giver of foreign residence. From Lagna he is the 10th lord, but placed in lagna, and lagna can show going back to the motherland.
- Nothing is possible till about February 2013. In 2013–2014 there is a 30–35% chance — "a very small chance".
- Mars and Rahu antardaśās follow. Even if he goes, it would be for about six months and he will be back.
Answer to the first question: no. This is the chart of somebody who stays abroad.
Second Chart — Lagna on the Virgo–Libra Border
A student present in the class gives his own data.
Birth data as given: October 1968, 5:30 AM IST, Andhra Pradesh, India. Male. The recording gives the date as the 26th, but the weekday discussion and every placement used in class fit the morning of the 25th (Moon in the middle of Scorpio with Venus). The notes and the site's chart use the 25th.
Weekday
- The native thought he was born on a Friday. The software says Thursday.
- Sunrise that day was 6:05 AM. Birth was half an hour before it.
"According to the Vedic calendar, the weekday doesn't change at midnight. It changes at sunrise."
- By the everyday (vyāvahārika) reckoning it was Friday. By Vedic reckoning it was still Thursday.
Virgo or Libra?
- Lagna is 29°12' Virgo. 3m22s later it is Libra.
- The teacher says to judge by physical features more than attitude. Attitude has to be asked, and the answer can mislead: "Somebody may think he is a great intellectual, but he may actually be the dumbest person on earth."
- A student calls Virgo "fickle-minded". Corrected: Virgo is intellectual, analytical, logical. Not all Virgo people are fickle.
- With Virgo lagna, lagna lord Mercury is in lagna — very strong. The native says he is analytical and logical, and adds "perfectionist". The teacher: Kanyā lagna people, himself included, are perfectionists. Things have to be a particular way, and one is uncomfortable otherwise unless sādhana overcomes it.
- If Libra: Venus and Moon together in the 2nd, no other strong influence on lagna except a debilitated Sun. Venus would dominate — very fair, handsome, with big eyes. His eyes are medium to small. Those are given by Kanyā, by Mercury. So Virgo.
- Jupiter and Ketu are in lagna with Mercury. Ketu with the lagna lord makes a person slightly spiritual or slightly eccentric and unpredictable.
- Lagna has pāpakartarī: Sun and Mars on either side.
- The native adds that the time could be anywhere from 5:00 to 5:30, closer to 5:30. The D4 border is the same as the rāśi border (3.5 minutes forward, ruled out by looks). Backward the D4 lagna holds for about 27 minutes; before that it is Pisces.
Second Chart — D4: Will He Go Back to India?
Events: first came to the USA in January 1997, went back at the end of that year, and returned in October 1999. That was the permanent move.
In the class chart: D4 lagna Gemini; Jupiter and Rahu in Virgo; Saturn in Sagittarius; Moon and Mars in Taurus; Sun in Capricorn; Mercury in Pisces. (The site's chart has Rahu in Gemini — his longitude is a fraction of a degree short of the next amsa.)
Why Jupiter daśā brought him abroad
- He first came at the fag end of Rahu daśā and went back. D4 Jupiter mahādaśā began in February 1999. He moved for good in October 1999 — soon after the daśā began, the paperwork started moving.
From Lagna (Gemini):
- Jupiter is the bādhaka lord and the 7th lord of long journeys.
- He is with Rahu — the 9th lord, and the kāraka for living abroad.
- The 12th is the only house not joined directly. But he aspects the 12th (graha dṛṣṭi, 9th-house aspect on Taurus), and the teacher calls him the dispositor of the 12th lord.
- With the previous D4 lagna, Pisces, Jupiter would be lagna lord in the 7th — "hardly likely to bring him abroad". This supports the time.
From Moon (Taurus):
- Saturn is the 9th lord and bādhaka lord, and he is in Jupiter's sign.
- Jupiter aspects the 12th lord Mars (graha dṛṣṭi, 9th-house aspect).
- He is with the kāraka Rahu. This link is weaker than the other two.
From Sun (Capricorn):
- Jupiter is the 12th lord in the 9th house with Rahu. "Case closed."
- He aspects the bādhaka lord Mars.
Jupiter joins the 9th, the 12th and the bādhaka sthāna, strongly from Lagna and Sun. No wonder his daśā took the native abroad.
Can he go back?
- Mars antardaśā (running): from Lagna, no link with the 5th or lagna. From Moon he is in lagna, but as 12th and 7th lord — he will not take him back. From Sun he is the bādhaka lord aspecting the bādhaka sthāna.
- Rahu antardaśā (next): 9th lord from Lagna, in the 9th from Sun.
- Till the end of Jupiter daśā (2014): very unlikely.
- Saturn mahādaśā (after that): in the bādhaka sthāna from Lagna and a 9th lord from Lagna; 9th lord from Moon; in the 12th from Sun. No return.
- Mercury mahādaśā (from 2033): he is the lagna lord, though debilitated, and has little to do with the 9th. From Moon he is the 5th lord aspecting the 5th. The best opportunity is after 2033 — retiring in India. Even then he may stay.
"The horoscope doesn't indicate it. You have to exert your free will to do that. If you leave things to your destiny, you will end up staying here."
What to look for
- "Will I go back to India?" is a very common question. The rule the teacher gives:
- In D4, the planet that makes the 9th and 12th weak and the lagna and 5th strong is the one likely to take the person back. Look for its period.
Lagna, Sun and Moon Together
- Read every house from Lagna, Sun and Moon, as Parashara taught.
- A planet linked to the house in question from all three references can give its result even if placed in the 8th or 12th. Few planets have such a link.
- The link must be made by the planet itself: owning, occupying or aspecting the house, or joining, aspecting or disposing its lord. Someone else aspecting the planet's own sign is not a link.
- When Lagna and Moon are in the same sign, or Lagna and Sun, give that sign more weight.
- If a known event is explained from Sun and Moon but not from Lagna, and the lagna of that varga is close to a border, try the neighbouring lagna. If it then fits from all three, the time has a small error.
Abroad or Motherland in D4

| 12th house | Change of place away from the birthplace |
| Bādhaka sthāna | Big changes |
| Strong lagna | A very good house that he is happy with |
| 5th lord strong and dominant | Patriotism; can take the person back |
| 5th lord debilitated, in the 7th | Long trips home every couple of years, no return to stay |
| Lagna lord–10th lord parivartana | Every change of residence is driven by career |
| Planet with argalā on the 9th and 12th, or in trine to a friend who rules them | Its period keeps the person abroad |
