Example Chart — D7 Child Birth Aug 2009: Rahu MD Verified — From Sun(5L=Rahu) + From Moon(Rahu Disposes 5L+Aspects 5H) = Strong From 2 References; Leo Lagna Reference Fails = Time Rectification Needed; Cancer D7 Lagna (Rectified 10:07PM): 5L=Ketu, Rahu Aspects Him = 5H Link From All 3 References; Shodashottari+Vimshottari Consistency Check

A man born in 1977 had his only child, a son, in August 2009. In D7 Vimshottari that is Rahu mahādaśā, on the border of Ketu and Venus antardaśā; the conditional Ṣoḍaśottari daśā gives Venus–Sun. The teacher tests Rahu against the 5th house from Sun, Moon and Lagna: from Sun he is the 5th lord, from Moon he aspects the 5th and disposes its lord, but from the Leo D7 lagna he has no link at all. The D7 lagna turns to Cancer only 2m31s earlier; there the 5th lord is Ketu and Rahu aspects him, so the link holds from all three references. The time is corrected to 10:07:15 PM. Venus, the Ṣoḍaśottari lord, fits from Sun and Moon but not from either lagna — Vimshottari read from three references is the more consistent of the two.

Key principle

So from Lagna he is aspecting the 5th lord, from Sun he is the 5th lord, from Moon he disposes the 5th lord and is aspecting the 5th house. So he has a link with the 5th house based on all the three. So this suggests that there is a little bit of error in the time.

Example Charts

Example chart — birth time as given, 10:10 PM (1977)
Aug 27, 1977 · 10:10 PM IST · India (78°30′E, 17°27′N). The class software (Surya Siddhanta-based settings) has lagna 17°52′ Aries; this chart has it about a quarter degree further on, and Mercury some 12° later in Leo.
Open D7. Lagna is early Leo, Sun in Libra, Moon in Capricorn, Venus in Aquarius, Jupiter in Cancer. Test Rahu against the 5th house from each reference: 5th lord from Sun (Aquarius), dispositor of the 5th lord Venus from Moon, nothing from Leo lagna. In class Rahu is in Virgo and Ketu in Pisces; this chart puts them one amsa back, in Leo and Aquarius, so Rahu’s aspect on Taurus (the 5th from Moon) is not seen here.

Example chart — corrected time, 10:07:15 PM (1977)
Aug 27, 1977 · 10:07:15 PM IST · India (78°30′E, 17°27′N). Time corrected in class from the birth of the son. This chart gives D4 lagna Libra and D10 lagna Virgo as in class; its D7 lagna is still Leo (Cancer only before about 10:06:30 PM).
The time adopted in class. In the teacher’s software the D7 lagna is now Cancer: the 5th is Scorpio, its lord Ketu, and Rahu aspects Ketu — a 5th-house link from Lagna as well as from Sun and Moon. This chart’s lagna runs slightly ahead of the teacher’s, so its D7 lagna is still Leo at this time; the nodes’ mutual aspect is the same.

First Chart — Data and Questions

A student brings the chart of a man he does not know personally. The class is held in late 2011.

Birth data as given: August 27, 1977, 10:10 PM IST (5h30m east of GMT); India, 78°30'E, 17°27'N. Male.
Rāśi lagna: 17°52' Aries in the teacher's software.
Known: he lives in the USA and works in software. His only child, a son, was born on August 22, 2009. Nobody knows when he moved abroad.
Questions: (1) Will he go back to India for good, soon? (2) He has a job but is looking for a change — will it happen?

The teacher reads the second question itself as a sign: looking for a change means some instability or discomfort with the present job.

Get events with the data

  • Only one event is known. The teacher asks for more in future:

"When somebody wants to find out something, get a few details. When he came here, when he got married, 2 or 3 events, so that we can verify the time."

  • The first aim is to rule out a gross error — a wrong day or month, or day and month swapped. Without events, the data "may or may not be useful".

Calculation model

  • The teacher's software is set to "calculation options as recommended by the author" (his Surya Siddhanta-based settings). Its longitudes differ from this site's chart. Here the difference matters: the site puts Mercury near 26° Leo, while every statement in class needs Mercury in the 12°–15° Leo range; Rahu and Mars also fall one amsa away in some vargas. The notes below follow the class. Where the site's chart shows something else, it is said.

D7 Saptamsa — Child Birth Verification

Leeway in D7

  • At 10:10 PM the D7 lagna is 5° Leo.
  • It changes to Cancer if birth was 2m31s earlier, and to Virgo if 12m32s later.
  • A 12-minute error is unlikely. A 2.5-minute error is easily possible: "They said 10:10; it may be 10:07 or 10:07:20."
  • So the question is whether Cancer or Leo makes more sense as D7 lagna.

Which daśā gave the child?

  • D7 Vimshottari: Rahu mahādaśā (1998–2015). August 22, 2009 falls on the border of Rahu–Ketu and Rahu–Venus — a day apart, so the antardaśā cannot be fixed.
  • Conditional daśās: he runs through the conditions on the D7 lagna — 10th lord in 10th, lagna lord in 7th, 7th lord in lagna, lagna vargottama, Sun in lagna, lagna lord and Rahu in mutual kendra/koṇa. None applies. But lagna is in the first half of an odd sign (Sun's horā) and birth is in śukla pakṣa, so Ṣoḍaśottari applies.
  • D7 Ṣoḍaśottari: Venus–Sun gave the child.

Rahu tested against the 5th house (Leo lagna)

"We take Sun, Moon and Lagna, the three, as the references, as Parashara taught."

In the class chart Sun is in Libra, Moon in Capricorn, Rahu in Virgo, Venus in Aquarius.

ReferenceRahu's link with the 5th house
From Sun (Libra)Rahu is the 5th lord (Aquarius). He sits in the 12th from Sun.
From Moon (Capricorn)Rahu is in the 9th and aspects the 5th house, Taurus (graha dṛṣṭi, his 9th-house aspect). The 5th lord Venus is in Aquarius, Rahu's sign — Rahu is his dispositor.
From Lagna (Leo)No link. He does not occupy or aspect the 5th, is not with the 5th lord, does not aspect or dispose the 5th lord Jupiter.
  • A student objects: from Sun the 5th lord is in the 12th. The teacher: 5th lord in the 12th is not a great placement, but Virgo is a good sign for Rahu. And when all three references are used, a planet linked to the house from the three references can give the result even from the 8th or 12th, "because there aren't too many planets who are connected with all the three".
  • From Moon, the 9th is māraṇa kāraka sthāna for Rahu. Whether he is "well placed" is a dicey call. For a child, a planet in the 9th aspecting the 5th is helpful.
  • A student offers: from Leo lagna the 5th lord Jupiter aspects Rahu's house. Rejected:

"Rahu's house doesn't matter. Rahu should have a link. It has to be a link established by Rahu."

If the D7 lagna is Cancer

  • The 5th is Scorpio; its lord is Ketu. Rahu aspects Ketu.
  • From Lagna Rahu aspects the 5th lord; from Sun he is the 5th lord; from Moon he disposes the 5th lord and aspects the 5th house.

"So he has a link with the 5th house based on all the three. So this suggests that there is a little bit of error in the time."

Venus (the Ṣoḍaśottari daśā lord)

  • From Sun: Venus is in the 5th house. From Moon: Venus is the 5th lord.
  • From Leo lagna: his only link is his aspect on the 5th lord Jupiter (rāśi dṛṣṭi, Aquarius on Cancer). But Jupiter is his enemy: "Compared to Rahu aspecting Ketu, Venus aspecting Jupiter doesn't make him give the best results."
  • From Cancer lagna: Venus is in the 8th. The lagna reference does not make much sense either way.
  • Conclusion: verify both the conditional daśā and Vimshottari. In many charts the conditional daśā may or may not fit the three references. Vimshottari "seems to be working pretty consistently" when read from all three instead of from lagna alone. Still, "even conditional daśās should have some indication" of the event.

Corrected time

  • Time taken as 10:07:15 PM ("it could be a little earlier also"), which puts the D7 lagna in Cancer in the teacher's software.
  • He suggests one more check that is not carried out in class: Jupiter or the Sun should be strong in the son's own chart.
  • Later he notes the correction changed nothing in D4 or D10. It was an exercise. It would matter if the lagna were on a border in those charts too.
  • On this site the lagna is about a quarter degree ahead of the teacher's, so the site's D7 lagna is still Leo at 10:07:15 and becomes Cancer only before about 10:06:30. The site also shows Rahu in Leo and Ketu in Aquarius in D7 (class: Virgo and Pisces). Rahu's aspect on Ketu holds in both.

Lagna, Sun and Moon Together

  • Read every house from Lagna, Sun and Moon, as Parashara taught.
  • A planet linked to the house in question from all three references can give its result even if placed in the 8th or 12th. Few planets have such a link.
  • The link must be made by the planet itself: owning, occupying or aspecting the house, or joining, aspecting or disposing its lord. Someone else aspecting the planet's own sign is not a link.
  • When Lagna and Moon are in the same sign, or Lagna and Sun, give that sign more weight.
  • If a known event is explained from Sun and Moon but not from Lagna, and the lagna of that varga is close to a border, try the neighbouring lagna. If it then fits from all three, the time has a small error.

Conditional Daśā and Vimshottari

  • Check which conditional daśā applies in the varga, and keep it at hand beside Vimshottari.
  • The conditional daśā may or may not make sense by the three references. Vimshottari read from all three works consistently.
  • Verify both.
