Example Chart (1989) D10: Shodashottari Doesn't Explain June 2011 Job; Leo Char Dasha(5H=Raj Yoga+Yogakaraka Mars in Lagna From Leo)=Job; Transit From Leo=Jupiter in 9H+Venus+Mars in 10H=Career Trigger; Mercury Exalted 6H=Harsha Yoga+Nirriti Dashamsa=Cutting-Edge Software; Moon as Lagna Reference: When Dasha Conditions Fail, Try Chandra Lagna
A man born in 1989 joined as a software engineer on June 26, 2011. His Dasamsa (Aries lagna) shows the career — 6th lord Mercury exalted in the 6th, in Nirriti's dasamsa — but the dashas chosen from the lagna do not show the job: Shodashottari gives Ketu–Ketu, the 8th lord in the 7th, and Vimshottari gives Venus–Mercury. Chara dasha does explain it: Leo holds a raja yoga, and on the day Jupiter is in the 9th from Leo and Venus and Mars are in the 10th. The teacher then applies the dasha conditions from Chandra lagna, which is stronger here: Dwadasottari gives Mercury–Saturn and Ashtottari from Ardra gives Mercury–Mercury; the thumb rule is to apply the conditions from the stronger of lagna and Moon and to test the contenders on known events. The page closes with the same native's degrees of May 2011, used to rectify the Siddhamsa lagna to Libra.
Key principle
There are many charts I find where things don't make sense, but when I take Moon as lagna and apply the condition, things suddenly make sense. You are calculating the dasha from Moon. It's a progression of Moon. So Chandra taken as lagna as the reference is very important.
Example Chart
A First Job — Which Dasha of the Dasamsa Explains It?
Does the Dasamsa Show a Software Career?
- Dasamsa lagna Aries. 10th lord Saturn.
- 6th lord Mercury is exalted in the 6th house, Virgo. The 6th is very powerful, and the 6th house of service can show the job. Exalted Mercury gives an intellectual career — software, logic, analysis.
- 10th lord Saturn is in the lagna with Rahu. That can show flexibility.
- Mercury is in Nirriti's dasamsa: either cutting-edge technology or underground, illegal work. With the 6th lord exalted in the 6th it is cutting-edge technology. In the long run he succeeds more in the latest technologies.
Site cast: the Dasamsa lagna is Aries, Moon is in Leo, Sun in Sagittarius and Venus in Cancer, as in class. Mercury, Saturn, Mars and Rahu fall in other signs (Cancer, Taurus, Virgo, Pisces).
Dashas from the Lagna Do Not Explain the Job
- Dasamsa lagna at 12° Aries is Surya hora. The birth is in Sukla paksha. Surya hora + Sukla paksha → Shodashottari.
- Shodashottari of the Dasamsa: Ketu–Ketu. Ketu is the 8th lord in the 7th house.
"It makes no sense at all. He is 8th lord in the 7th house. He can't give job. He will actually take away any existing job."
- One expects Mercury (6th lord in the 6th) or Saturn (10th lord in the lagna, a new beginning, aspecting the 10th) to give the job.
- Vimshottari: Venus–Mercury. The antardasha fits. Venus is the 2nd and 7th lord in the 4th; he does not show the start of a career. Some sense, not strong.
- The teacher does not move the lagna. This lagna shows the career correctly, and Saturn, the 10th lord, was transiting Virgo over the exalted 6th lord when the job came.
Chara Dasha and the Transit from the Dasha Sign
- Chara dasha of the Dasamsa: Leo.
- From the lagna, Leo is the 5th house and holds a raja yoga of the lagna lord Mars and the 4th lord Moon.
- Taking Leo as lagna: the 9th lord Mars, the yogakaraka, is in it, and its lord Sun is in the 5th.
- Transit on June 26, 2011, counted from Leo:
- Jupiter, the 5th lord from the dasha sign, is in Aries, the 9th, and aspects the dasha sign.
- Venus and Mars are in Taurus, the 10th. Venus is the 10th lord, Mars the yogakaraka: the 9th and 10th lords together in the 10th. A raja yoga in transit, and the 10th lord in the 10th.
- Sun, lord of the dasha sign, is in the 11th with the 11th lord Mercury.
"This lucky break can be explained based on Chara dasha. So let's not jump to the conclusion that this is inaccurate."
Conditions Applied from Chandra Lagna
- From the lagna no special condition applies: the lagna is not vargottama and not in Venus's amsa.
- The teacher has seen many charts where the dashas make no sense until the conditions are applied with Moon as lagna.
"You are calculating the dasha from Moon. It's a progression of Moon. So Chandra taken as lagna as the reference is very important. In general, lagna and Chandra lagna are both important — mind and body."
- Here the lagna carries nodal influence: debilitated Saturn with Rahu in Aries. Moon in Leo with Mars is the stronger. Chandra lagna dominates.
- Dwadasottari. Moon is at 5°42' Leo in the Dasamsa. The navamsa of that position (D-10 then D-9) is Taurus, where Moon is exalted. Chandra lagna is in Venus's amsa, so Dwadasottari applies.
- Dwadasottari of the Dasamsa: Mercury–Saturn. Mercury is the 6th lord in the 6th; Saturn is the 10th lord in the lagna aspecting the 10th. A great candidate for a job.
- Ashtottari. The lord of Chandra lagna is Sun. Rahu is in a trine from him, and in the 9th from Chandra lagna, not in it. When the lagna lord and Rahu are in mutual trines or quadrants and Rahu is not in the lagna, Ashtottari applies. Rahu alone: start from Krittika. Rahu with another planet (here Saturn): start from Ardra.
- Ashtottari from Ardra: Mercury dasha began in October 2009. The job came in Mercury–Mercury.
- Score: Vimshottari Venus–Mercury, some sense. Shodashottari Ketu–Ketu, none. Dwadasottari Mercury–Saturn, excellent. Ashtottari Mercury–Mercury, excellent.
The Thumb Rule — and Its Limit
- There is no golden key and no perfect formula yet.
- See whether the lagna or Moon is stronger. Apply the conditions from the stronger one. Among the conditions that apply, use the one that applies most strongly.
- Better: find known events in the same area of life. See which contending dasha explains them. One dasha works beautifully and the others are only okay. Use that one.
- A student asked how the job could have been predicted beforehand. Chara dasha gave a strong indication that the period was auspicious; the nakshatra dasha still has to be picked correctly. Chara dasha and transits can always be used alongside.
The Same Native's Degrees — Rectifying the Siddhamsa
The Event
- May 2011: a combined bachelor's and master's degree in computer science. He joined the job the next month.
- The native is a very intelligent student.
Which Siddhamsa Lagna
- The D-24 lagna could be Libra or Scorpio. The leeway is 3½ minutes forward and 2 minutes back.
- Libra: lagna lord Venus and the yogakaraka Saturn (5th lord) are together in the 9th, Gemini — a raja yoga.
- Scorpio: lagna lord and 5th lord are together in the 11th — also a raja yoga.
- Both explain a quick learner. The dasha has to decide.
Testing the Dashas
- Scorpio lagna: Sun in the lagna → Shashtihayani applies. It gives Venus–Sun. Sun is the 10th lord in the lagna — maybe. Venus is the 7th lord in the 8th. Not much sense.
- Libra lagna: 10th lord Moon in the 10th → Chaturashiti-sama applies. It gives Moon–Venus.
- Moon is the 10th lord in the 10th. A Sukla paksha Moon is a natural benefic, and a benefic owning a quadrant turns slightly malefic; but he is in his own house. A mixed, neutral dasha. His education ran through the whole Moon dasha: the 10th lord in the 10th gives education tied to career.
- Venus is the lagna lord in raja yoga with the yogakaraka. The degree in Venus antardasha makes sense.
- From Moon as lagna: none of the special conditions apply, and the navamsa of Moon's D-24 position is not Venus's. Moon and Rahu are in mutual quadrants, so Ashtottari from Ardra would apply: Mars–Venus. No better.
- Best case: Libra lagna with Chaturashiti-sama. The time is moved from 2:07 to 2:05 PM.
Site cast: the D-24 lagna is Scorpio at 2:07 and still Scorpio at 2:05; the class positions of Venus, Saturn, Mars and Jupiter in D-24 are not reproduced either. Moon in Cancer and Sun in Scorpio agree.
Why Computer Science
- Mercury is the 9th lord and aspects the lagna.
- The key combination of the chart — lagna lord Venus with yogakaraka Saturn — is in Gemini, Mercury's sign.
- Strong Mercury and Gemini make an intellectual. Mercury's fields: accounting, mathematics, computers.
- The SJC thumb rule (the teacher has neither accepted nor rejected it): the 9th house shows the bachelor's and the 2nd the master's.
- The 9th is owned by Mercury.
- The 2nd receives a three-quarter aspect of Mercury; its lord Mars is in Mercury's sign; its other lord Ketu can also show computer science.
Cross-check: Chara Dasha and Tithi Pravesha
- If Libra is right, the Chara dasha of D-24 must also fit. The dasha is Sagittarius.
- Sagittarius is the 3rd house. Its lord Jupiter, the 3rd and 6th lord and a malefic for Libra, is in the 12th.
- Taking Sagittarius as lagna: the lagna and 4th lord Jupiter and the 5th lord Mars are together in the 10th. A raja yoga in the 10th — career-related education.
- Transit at the event: Jupiter, lord of the dasha sign, is in Aries, the 5th from Sagittarius, with the 5th lord Mars. The natal Mars–Jupiter yoga repeats in transit in the 5th from the dasha sign.
- With 2:05 PM, the Tithi Pravesha chart of that year has Libra rising in D-24 with exalted Saturn in it — a very auspicious event in education during the year.
