Example Chart (1985): D4 Rahu MD(8L Guru Chandala in 4H=Ancestral Property Dispute); Settle Before Saturn AD; D24 Aquarius Lagna(Mars in Own Sign Aspects 9H=Hardware Electronics vs Capricorn Lagna 9L Mercury in Own Sign=Software); D9 Venus AD 2015=7L in Lagna=Marriage; Char Dasha=Jupiter Transit Cancer(9L Exalted in Char Dasha Sign); Mercury 6L in 8H=Anxiety Not Marriage
A Libra-lagna native (1985) whose lagna sits half a minute before a border shared by D-4, D-12, D-20 and D-24. The teacher fixes the time from three known facts: the family deity (D-20), a good relation with the father (D-12) and hardware electronics (D-24, where Mars in own sign aspects the empty 9th). In D-4 the Rahu daśā has the 8th lord Rahu with 9th lord Jupiter on the 4th cusp — a dispute over the ancestral home; he should compromise and pay in the 12th lord Mercury's period and finish before the maraka Saturn's antardaśā. In D-9, Jupiter–Mercury gives anxiety over marriage; Venus antardaśā about 2015, with Jupiter transiting the Cancer Char daśā sign, is the time. D-10 is read briefly. The page opens with a student's chart (1994) whose D-24 lagna, Cancer or Leo, decides between medicine and other fields and is left open.
Key principle
So 9th-8th lord combination in the 4th house is the reason. My suggestion would be try to do some settlement before the next November.
Example Charts
A student whose D-24 lagna is on the border (Cancer lagna, 1994)
The question and the lagna
- A high-school student, very good at studies. He wants medicine. Will it be medicine or something else?
- His parents are divorced. He lives with his mother and visits his father.
- Whether the family can afford the course is not a question for the chart.
- Lagna is at the very beginning of Cancer. A birth 4 minutes earlier gives Gemini. The time was given as 1:12, not rounded to a 5-minute multiple, so the teacher takes it as accurate.
- The D-24 lagna is Cancer. It becomes Leo 1 minute 18 seconds later. Both have to be considered.
- 12 and 24 are multiples, so a D-12 event can often settle a D-24 border. Here it cannot: the D-12 lagna does not change on the forward side.
- The praśna still has Virgo lagna, with the same pāpa kartari of Mars and Saturn and debilitated lagna lord Mercury in the 7th. Mercury is also the planet of education, so the praśna fits a question on education.
D-12: away from the father
Cancer lagna in D-12.
- Sun, the pitṛ kāraka, is in lagna with Ketu. He is afflicted and weak.
- Jupiter is the 9th lord from lagna and from Sun. He is in the 12th, the house of being away, loss or rejection, with the 8th lord Saturn.
- 9th and 8th lords together in the 12th: away from the father.
- Lagna afflicted by Sun and Ketu, lagna lord Moon in the 12th with 8th lord Saturn: instability in the parental environment. Not a smooth family.
- The mother's side is better. Mars, the yogakāraka, is in the 4th; by Parashara a house occupied by the yogakāraka is blessed. 4th lord Venus is in a friendly sign. By sign he is in the 8th, but by exact degree he is on the border and falls in the 9th house. Moon, though afflicted by Saturn, is with Jupiter.
- The 4th house is much better than the 9th. This matches what is known.
D-27: what each planet shows
The teacher uses this chart to illustrate D-27. The lagna is not certain, so the planets are read first.
| Planet in D-27 | Shows |
|---|---|
| Mars | Energy and initiative |
| Moon | Manas, clarity of mind |
| Mercury | Learning ability |
| Jupiter | Discrimination |
| Venus | The spirit of happiness |
| Saturn | The spirit of hard work |
| Ketu | The spirit of detachment |
"So you see all those and see which are strong, which are afflicted."
For this student:
- Mars is in mūlatrikoṇa: a charged-up person with a lot of initiative.
- Venus is exalted, with Moon: subconsciously there are forces that make him happy. Cheerful and optimistic.
- Mercury is in a friendly sign and aspected by his dispositor. A planet aspected by the lord of its sign is strong. A good learner.
- Ketu is in Moon's sign, which gives an inherent detachment, but he is with Sun and afflicted, so it may not show.
- If the lagna is accurate, more can be said: Mercury in lagna gives an intellectual person, Saturn's aspect a hardworking one, Venus and Moon in the 3rd a very creative one.
- This is the subconscious make-up of the person.
D-24: medicine or not
With Cancer lagna (the time as given)
- Basic education is read with the 4th house, Libra, as lagna. Its lord Venus is in the 9th from it. Saturn, the yogakāraka from Libra, is debilitated in Aries with Moon and Sun, and aspects Venus. The 5th, 10th and 11th lords from Libra are together and aspect Libra. Basic education is very good.
- Bachelor's education is read with the 9th house, Pisces, as lagna. Its lord Jupiter is in the 11th from it, but debilitated. Exalted Mercury aspects him. The Sun–Moon–Saturn group has argalā on Pisces, but they are the 6th and 11th lords from it. Good, not great.
- For medicine: Mars aspects the 9th house (graha dṛṣṭi), and Mars is also the 9th lord counted from the 9th. There is a Martian influence. But the influences that stand out are Jupiter and Mercury. Exalted Mercury shows economics, finance, law, media, communications.
With Leo lagna (1 minute 18 seconds later)
- The 9th house holds Moon, Sun and Saturn together. That is excellent for medicine. Medicine is very likely.
Verdict
- The time is on a border and there are too few events to test it. The teacher does not decide.
- He asks for dated events: academic distinctions, the parents' divorce, any period of depression. The chart is to be taken up again in the next class.
Where the site's chart differs (1994 chart)
- D-12: the site shows Sun in lagna with Saturn, not Ketu; Ketu with Moon in the 12th; Jupiter in Taurus in the 11th, not in the 12th.
- D-27: the site shows Capricorn lagna and Mars in Aries as in the class, but Venus and Moon in Aquarius, not Pisces, and Mercury in Scorpio, not in lagna.
- D-24: the site shows Cancer lagna, Sun and Moon in Aries, and Mars aspecting Pisces as in the class. It shows Saturn in Gemini, Venus in Taurus, Jupiter in Scorpio and Mercury in Leo, so the Saturn, Jupiter and Mercury readings above do not appear there.
Ancestral property and marriage (Libra lagna, 1985)
The questions and the border lagna
- An engineering graduate in electronics and telecommunication, working in the same field, on the hardware side. He works in a city far from his home town; his mother lives at home. His education was always away from home and family.
- His father died two years ago. He had a very good relation with him.
- Relatives are trying to take the ancestral home. He wants to pay them off and keep his father's property.
- With the father gone, other elders are pushing a marriage that suits them. He is nervous about it.
- The family deity is Lord Venkateswara.
- In the praśna, debilitated Mercury again stands out. Mercury shows relatives, so trouble from relatives; and he is in the 7th house of marriage.
- Lagna is at 22°23' Libra. 22°30' is a border for D-4, D-12, D-20 and D-24 together. Half a minute later all four lagnas change. In a chart where the D-4 lagna changes only every half hour, the birth is half a minute from the border.
Personality: Libra lagna
- He is described as very cheerful, keeping everybody happy, never butting heads.
- Mars and Ketu are in lagna, with Moon and Rahu opposite. Mars is more than 11° from the lagna degree and Moon is far. No influence on lagna is very strong; the closest is Ketu.
- Ketu is in a sign of Venus, an adhimitra rāśi. Ketu is detachment; in a great friend's sign he gives a happy-go-lucky nature.
- Libra is the balance: balanced, diplomatic, pragmatic, hard to read. Tula people are like this unless there is serious affliction.
- The 2nd house holds Mercury and Saturn, both functional benefics. It is strong: wealth and good speech. Saturn is slow and measured. Mercury with Saturn in the 2nd gives measured, soft, gentle speech, even though the sign is Scorpio.
Family deity from the 2nd house of D-20
The family deity is seen from the 2nd house of Vimśāṁśa. The known deity is used to test the two possible lagnas.
- Gemini lagna (time as given). The 2nd house has exalted Jupiter, aspected by Saturn. Its lord Moon is with Venus, which shows a female deity. Jupiter shows Shiva or some other form. Not Venkateswara.
- Cancer lagna (half a minute later). The 2nd house, Leo, holds Venus and Moon: a Divine Mother form. Its lord Sun shows Shiva. Neither shows Venkateswara, until a student points out that Rahu aspects the 2nd house.
- Rahu is in Aquarius, his own sign, aspecting Leo. Kumbha shows hills. Rahu shows Varaha, and Venkateswara is associated with Varaha. Saturn also has an aspect on the 2nd. Saturn and Rahu can show Venkateswara.
"Even though 2nd house contains Venus-Moon combination, it is aspected by a planet in own sign. Excellent point."
- So the lagna is probably Cancer.
D-12: good relation with the father
- Cancer lagna. The 9th house is empty. 9th lord Jupiter is in the 4th, a quadrant, with Rahu, but Rahu is at 0° Libra and Jupiter at 15°, too far to matter. Lagna lord Moon and 9th lord Jupiter are in mutual trines. That explains a good relation with the father.
- Gemini lagna. 9th lord Saturn is in the 9th in own sign, but afflicted by Mars and Sun, and lagna lord Mercury and Saturn are in a 3rd–11th relation. Acceptable, not great.
- Both are possible. Cancer explains the father a little better.
- The time is moved to 3:17:30 AM. At 3:15 in the morning people are sleepy and the recorded time can easily be off.
D-24: hardware electronics
Every D-12 border is also a D-24 border, so the D-24 lagna changes too, from Capricorn to Aquarius. The reverse does not hold.
- Capricorn lagna. The 9th house, Virgo, is empty. Its lord Mercury is in own sign Gemini: software, mathematics, logic, communications, media.
- Aquarius lagna. The 9th house, Libra, is empty and aspected by Mars in own sign (graha dṛṣṭi from Aries): hardware, electronics. Its lord Venus is with Rahu and Ketu. Lagna lord Rahu with 9th lord Venus is a rāja yoga: a very good bachelor's education. Rahu shows hardware, electronics and communications.
- The native is on the hardware side. Aquarius fits.
- All the events checked so far agree with the changed time.
D-4: the ancestral home
D-4 lagna changes from Aries to Cancer. The teacher reads the Vimshottari daśā of D-4.
Rahu daśā (from 2008–09)
- Rahu is the 8th lord: worry and tension over property.
- Rahu is with Jupiter in the 4th. Both are at the very beginning of Libra and lagna is at the beginning of Cancer, so they sit on the cusp of the 4th house.
- Jupiter is the 9th lord: father and ancestors. The 9th lord in the 4th house of property is ancestral property.
- The 8th lord closely afflicts him. They are enemies, and it is a Guru-Chandala yoga. Serious problems over ancestral property.
- The trouble began a year or two after the daśā started. The timing fits.
"So 9th-8th lord combination in the 4th house is the reason."
Jupiter antardaśā (running)
- Some good settlement is possible. Jupiter is the 9th lord and can give fortune.
- Jupiter is also the 6th lord. The 6th house holds Venus, the bādhaka lord, with Sun, who shows government. Some litigation may start in the next year and a half.
Saturn antardaśā (from the end of next year)
- Saturn is the 7th and 8th lord in the 8th in own sign. He is a maraka: a risky planet. If the matter drags into his period it means a lot of tension and possibly losing some of the property.
- Mercury shows relatives. Saturn and Mercury in the 8th: problems from relatives.
"My suggestion would be try to do some settlement before the next November."
Pratyantardaśā
- Mercury's runs now, for the next few months. He is in the 8th, but he is the 12th lord, with the 8th lord in the 8th: a vipareeta rāja yoga. He is also the 12th lord from Jupiter, the antardaśā lord.
- The 12th is compromise, giving and expenditure. Spend some money, pay people and settle. The middle of this year is favourable.
- Venus's runs from September to next January. He is the bādhaka lord in the 6th with Sun and can give litigation.
Annual chart and praśna for the property
D-4 of the Tājaka annual chart for the running year
- Lagna lord Saturn is exalted in the 10th.
- Mercury, the 9th lord of the father's property, is in a friendly sign in the 2nd.
- Take the 4th house of property as lagna. Its 7th lord is in it: many dealings over property. Mercury is in the 11th from it: fulfilment of desires about ancestral property.
- Venus is at 8° Aries and Saturn at 12° Libra, aspecting each other within 4°. Yogakāraka and lagna lord: a very good rāja yoga.
- The periods of Saturn and Venus are the conducive ones: April to June, and August.
- From now until Sharan Navaratri in September–October is the opportune time. He should make a move and gauge how the others react.
D-4 of the praśna (7:48:44 PM)
- Lagna holds Mercury, the 4th lord of property. Lagna lord Jupiter is exalted in the 5th and aspects lagna: a blessing.
- Ketu, a 9th lord, is in the 9th in own sign, in trine to Mercury.
- Lagna lord, 4th lord and 9th lord are in mutual trines. The D-4 shows promise: the matter can be solved.
- The other 9th lord, Mars, is in the 12th of compromise and expenditure, and Mars is the kāraka of real estate. Some payment over the ancestral property will be needed.
- Praśna and annual chart both favour a settlement. He should move in the next few months.
D-9: marriage timing
Vimshottari of D-9: Jupiter daśā, Mercury antardaśā (from last year)
- Jupiter is the 9th lord in the 5th. Jupiter daśā is very conducive for marriage.
- Mercury is the 6th lord in the 8th in Scorpio, an evil sign. He does not show marriage.
"This is more like a period of some anxiety and tension relating to marriage than really getting married."
The later antardaśās
- Ketu (2014): the 8th lord, but in the 11th house of fulfilment, and in the 7th from Jupiter.
- Venus (from about 2015, at about age 30): the 7th lord in lagna.
- Jupiter–Ketu and Jupiter–Venus have a better chance of marriage than Jupiter–Mercury.
Char daśā of D-9 with transit
- Cancer daśā runs. Take Cancer as lagna. Jupiter now transits the 10th from it: not conducive. Next he comes to the 11th; some chance.
- Around February 2015 Jupiter is in Cancer. During Cancer Char daśā the 9th lord transits exalted in the daśā sign. That is conducive, and Venus antardaśā runs then.
D-9 of the praśna
- Lagna holds Venus and Ketu. Lagna lord Mercury is with Jupiter in the 3rd.
- Venus is the 5th lord. The 5th lord in lagna can show falling in love and marrying. It does not look like a rebellious marriage that the elders oppose. He can find someone he loves whom the elders also accept. That takes time.
- Ketu is the planet closest to the lagna degree, and he is the 6th lord: wrong moves and wrong motivations at work now. Ketu also shows delay.
Advice
- This time is not conducive. Do not rush. He is still in his twenties. Attend to career and the property now and marry a few years later.
D-10: career
A student asks whether he will stay in the profession or go into business.
- Sun is in the 10th.
- The 7th house is strong: Mercury, a functional benefic, is in it and the 7th lord is exalted. Some chance of business exists.
- Vimshottari of D-10: Jupiter daśā runs until 2019. He is the 8th lord, but in the 12th, so the daśā is good. From lagna he is the 11th lord; from Moon he is the 10th lord in the 11th; from Sun he is the 2nd and 11th lord. From all three references the 11th house dominates: fulfilment of desires.
- Saturn daśā follows. Saturn is the yogakāraka in the 5th.
"Until then it will be good, then it will be super."
Where the site's chart differs (1985 chart)
- The site's lagna is about 0.2° higher, so it already shows Cancer in D-4, D-12 and D-20 and Aquarius in D-24 at 3:17:00. The chart is kept at the rectified 3:17:30.
- The site uses the mean node, about 2° behind the teacher's Rahu and Ketu. Rahu therefore appears in Sagittarius in D-20 (not in Aquarius aspecting the 2nd), in Virgo in D-12 and in Cancer in D-4 (not in Libra with Jupiter), and Ketu in Capricorn in D-9 (not in the 11th).
- Venus is at the very end of Scorpio on the site and at the start of Sagittarius in the class. The site shows Venus in Cancer in D-20, in Leo in D-4 and in Pisces in the 12th of D-9, where the class has Leo, Sagittarius (the 6th) and Aries lagna.
- Mercury: Taurus in D-4 (class: Aquarius, the 8th), Sagittarius in D-10 (class: the 7th), and Cancer in D-24, which matters only for the rejected Capricorn lagna.
- Jupiter is in Cancer in the 4th of D-9 on the site (class: Leo, the 5th). Saturn is in Libra in the 6th of D-10 (class: the 5th) and in Pisces in D-12 (class: Aquarius).
- The site does show: D-24 with Aquarius lagna, Mars in Aries aspecting Libra and Venus with the nodes in Gemini; D-4 with Jupiter in Libra in the 4th, Saturn in Aquarius in the 8th and Sun in the 6th; D-12 with Jupiter in the 4th in trine to Moon; D-9 with Aries lagna and Mercury in Scorpio in the 8th; D-10 with Taurus lagna, Sun in the 10th, Jupiter in the 12th and exalted Mars.
- The varga-specific Vimshottari daśās, the Char daśā of D-9 and the Tājaka periods are as the teacher read them from his software.
