The Example Chart and the Questions

Events supplied by the native

• Jobs: sales support till 2005, marketing till 2010, a sabbatical in 2010–11, high-voltage design engineering since August 2011. Every job included project management.
• The first job's start date is not given. The teacher places the sales-support work between the bachelor's (2002) and 2005.

Her questions

1. Continue the engineering job, go back to technical marketing, or something else? "I have been undercompensated in all jobs so far. Will that be so in future too?"
2. What is the best source of income — job or business? Are career and wealth tied together?
3. Career has been a source of constant change and dissatisfaction. Remedies welcome.

Method

• It is a career question, but the birth time is tested first against the known events, one varga at a time.
• Each event is read in the varga that owns it, with that varga's own Vimśottarī daśā (Navāṁśa Vimśottarī for marriage, Saptāṁśa Vimśottarī for the child, and so on). The periods named below are these varga daśās, not the ordinary Vimśottarī from the rāśi Moon.
• The class software places Rāhu about a degree earlier in Virgo than the site's chart does (below 6°, against 6°46'). In this chart that moves the nodes across a boundary in D-9, D-10 and D-24. The notes give the class positions and say where the site's chart differs.

Marriage — Navamsa (D-9), Mars–Rahu

• Legal marriage January 1999, rituals December 1999. The teacher assumes they lived as husband and wife after the legal marriage, so the legal marriage is taken as the marriage.
• Navāṁśa Vimśottarī in January 1999: Mars–Rāhu, towards the end of the Rāhu antardaśā.
• Navāṁśa lagna is Pisces. At first sight the teacher says Mars–Rāhu "doesn't make any sense". Then he works it out.

Mars, the daśā lord

• Mars is the 2nd and 9th lord, placed in Libra (8th house).
• By graha dṛṣṭi he aspects the 2nd house Aries (7th aspect), the 7th lord Mercury in Capricorn (4th aspect), and the lagna lord Jupiter in Taurus (8th aspect).
• 9th lord with aspect on the 2nd house, the 7th lord and the lagna lord: "he is a powerful planet here." The 2nd-house link shows a change in the family.

Rahu, the antardaśā lord

• A student: Rāhu is a strong 12th lord — he owns Aquarius and sits in it, 12th lord in the 12th. (The site's chart puts Rāhu just across the line in Pisces, the lagna.)
• From the daśā lord: take Mars as lagna. Aquarius is the 5th from Libra, so Rāhu is the 5th lord in the 5th, the house of puṇya.

"From daśā lagna, so Mars as lagna, Rāhu is the 5th lord in the house of puṇya. So it is possible Mars–Rāhu can give marriage."

• The teacher's verdict is "possible", not "certain". No change to the birth time is called for.

Daughter — Saptamsa (D-7), Rahu–Mercury

• Daughter born December 2006. Saptāṁśa Vimśottarī then: Rāhu–Mercury.
• Saptāṁśa lagna is Aquarius.
• Rāhu is the lagna lord, in Aries, the 3rd house. The 3rd is the 11th from the 5th — the house of gain of children. "Being the lagna lord, he can give a child."
• Mercury is the 5th lord in the 5th, in his own sign Gemini. "He is very, very powerful."
• From the daśā lord Rāhu in Aries, Mercury is the 3rd lord in the 3rd — again the house of gain of children.

"Being the 5th lord in the 5th house, he can definitely give a child. And moreover, from Rāhu, the 3rd lord in the 3rd."

Move Abroad — Chaturthamsa (D-4), Jupiter–Rahu

• Moved to the US in January 2000. Chaturthāṁśa Vimśottarī then: Jupiter–Rāhu.
• Chaturthāṁśa lagna is Aries.
• Jupiter is the 9th and 12th lord, in Pisces, the 12th house. His period shows a change in her domestic conditions.
• Rāhu is in Virgo, the 6th house, and aspects the 12th house Pisces by the 7th aspect. He is the kāraka for foreign lands.
• A student adds: Rāhu is also the bādhaka lord for this lagna (Aries is movable, the bādhaka house is the 11th, Aquarius). The teacher agrees.
• From the daśā lord Jupiter in Pisces: Rāhu owns Aquarius, the 12th, and sits in Virgo, the 7th. 12th lord in the 7th, the house of long journeys.

"12th lord in the 7th, that is perfect."

• Conclusion so far: "With the time given, mostly things are making sense."

Education — D-24, and How Far the Time Can Move

• D-24 lagna is Libra at the given time. It becomes Scorpio 18 seconds later, so both are considered.
• Education: bachelor's in electrical engineering, master's an MBA in marketing.

Libra lagna in D-24

• 9th house is Gemini. Its lord Mercury is in Sagittarius and aspects it: owned and aspected by Mercury. Mathematics, logic, analysis.
• A student objects that electrical engineering needs Rāhu, Saturn or Mars. The teacher answers that an electrical engineer has done a great deal of mathematics and logical work, so a Mercury 9th house is possible.
• 2nd house (the master's degree) is Scorpio. Saturn is in it and the Sun aspects it from Taurus. The student also counts Rāhu and Ketu as influencing it (the site's chart has the nodes in Sagittarius, the 3rd). The 2nd lord Mars is with Venus in Aquarius.
• Sun and Venus influence can show management and marketing.

Verdict

"We are not fully 100% sure of this D-24. But moving it to the next sign doesn't really make things any better."

• Libra is better than the next sign and better than the previous one, so the time is left alone.
• The D-9, D-7 and D-4 checks have a wide margin — about ten minutes. All they prove is that the time is not wrong by more than ten minutes backwards. It could still be five minutes early.
• The Daśāṁśa changes lagna only 3 minutes earlier, so it is the finer test.

Dasamsa (D-10) Lagna — Aries or Pisces

• Daśāṁśa lagna at the given time is Aries. A birth 3 minutes earlier gives Pisces. The career decides between them.

Aries lagna against the career

• Rāhu daśā till 2005 — sales support. In the class chart Rāhu is the 11th lord in the 3rd house, Gemini, a Mercury sign. The 3rd is the house of interaction and communication. A salesperson talks to people. Rāhu in the 3rd can show sales work. (The site's chart puts Rāhu in Cancer, the 4th, and Ketu in Capricorn, the 10th. In class Ketu is in Sagittarius, the 9th.)
• Jupiter daśā from 2005 — marketing. Jupiter is the 9th lord in the 11th house.
• A student asks whether marketing is a Venus–Mercury trade rather than a Jupiter one. The teacher: by varṇa, marketing is Vaiśya work, so Mercury must be involved. Venus is a rājasic Brāhmaṇa and need not show marketing.
• 10th house. The 10th lord Saturn is in the 6th, in Virgo: routine work, and not much satisfaction. Virgo is a Mercury sign — the planet of business, marketing, sales and communication.
• Moon in the 10th. Work that means moving among people. It can show motherly work (a nurse, teaching at a small school, daycare) or food and restaurants. Moving among people, it can also show marketing. But the Moon is in an inimical sign, so the career has not been very successful so far.
• Mercury in Libra has a three-quarter aspect on the 10th house (the 4th-house aspect) and a full aspect on the lagna.
• 7th house is very strong. The 7th lord Venus is in the 7th, in his own sign Libra, with the 6th lord Mercury.
  • The 6th lord shows service. But he is in the 7th, the house of interaction. Even when she works for somebody else, it is almost as though she is on her own, talking to people.
  • A strong 7th house also shows success in business eventually.
  • Mercury–Venus together: pulling people in by display, a grand picture put up to attract them.

Pisces lagna (3 minutes earlier)

• Sun and Mars would be in the lagna. Mars would be the 9th lord. Two strong fiery planets in the lagna show a leader: politics, management, administration.
• Ketu would be in the 10th house as the 9th lord. Ketu is mathematics, computers, hardware design. Her recent engineering work would have been the main career all along.
• It does not explain a career in sales and marketing.

"So the bottom line is this makes a little more sense."

The business attempt confirms it

• Business registered April 2011, closed March 2012 — all inside Jupiter–Mercury.
• Mercury is in the 7th house, so he gave her a business. He is the 6th lord, so from the business he led her back to service.

"Mercury being in the 7th house, he gave her business. But because he is the 6th lord, eventually from the business he took her into service."

• Aries is kept. The birth is not earlier than 2:16 PM: between 2:16 and 2:19, or a little later. The given time stands.
