Chartered Accountant (Leo Lagna 1971): D10 Sagittarius Lagna Rectification (7L Mercury in Lagna = Business; CPA=Mercury+Jupiter's Sign); Satapdika Dasha (Vargottama Lagna); Mars Dasha 1989-2009 = Business Partnership (A7 in Aries, Mars in 7H D10 by Bhava, Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga); Saturn Broke Partnership Jan 2010 (12th from A7 + Badhaka)

A chartered accountant (Leo lagna, 1971) was in business for ten years, split from his partner in January–February 2010 and became CFO of a mining company. The class first repairs the birth time: the saved time gives Capricorn D-10, which does not make an accountant, so it is moved a few seconds back to Sagittarius D-10 with 7th and 10th lord Mercury in the lagna sign. The lagna is vargottama, so Satabdika daśā is used: Mars 1989–2009, Saturn from June 2009. Reading the D-10 by bhava, Mars is 5th lord in the 7th house, debilitated with nīcabhaṅga, and lord of A7 — the daśā of business and partnership. Saturn sits in the 12th from A7, is bādhaka lord from it and an enemy of Mars, so his daśā broke the partnership and took the native into service in a Saturnine industry.

Key principle

Apart from the fact that Mars was in the 7th house, he is the owner of A7. So there is no wonder that the entire Mars dasha he was pretty much in a partnership. He was doing business.

Example Chart

Example chart — chartered accountant, career change in Saturn daśā (1971)
Nov 27, 1971 · 12:25:30 AM IST (rectified in class). Cast here 2 s earlier (12:25:28): the site's ayanamsa puts the D-10 border a second before 12:25:30, and the class needs Sagittarius D-10.
Leo lagna just under 15°, vargottama (D-9 lagna Leo). Open D-10: lagna Sagittarius at 29°57′, so the class counts houses from the lagna degree and each planet falls one house earlier than its sign shows. Mercury (7th and 10th lord) in Sagittarius; Mars debilitated at 29° Cancer — 8th by sign, 7th house by bhava; Jupiter in Capricorn (1st by bhava) and Moon in Libra (10th by bhava) cancel his debility. Saturn at the start of Aries is in the 12th from A7, which the class puts at 10°30′ Aries. The class has Ketu at 20° Cancer with Mars; this chart (mean node) shows Ketu at 0° Leo.

Case Study — The Chart and Its Rectification

The Chart

  • Born 27 November 1971, 12:25:30 AM IST (rectified time).
  • Lagna Leo, a fraction under 15°. Moon at 24°31' Aquarius.
  • Navamsa lagna is also Leo — lagna is vargottama.
  • D-10 lagna is Sagittarius, in its last degree.

The question

  • The native is a chartered accountant (a CPA in American terms). He has been in business for the last ten years.
  • He split from his partner of several years, a classmate, in January–February 2010, about three months before the class.
  • He has now taken a full-time position as CFO of a mining company.
  • Wanted: profession, career and money — the outlook for the next few years after this big change.

Rectification

  • The chart had been seen in class a couple of years earlier and the saved time was already a rectified one: 12:25:33 AM.
  • In the software as now set, that time puts the lagna barely past 15° Leo. The dasamsa lagna changes from Sagittarius to Capricorn at 15° Leo, so the chart opens with Capricorn D-10.
  • PVNR: Capricorn lagna "doesn't make sense to me". With Capricorn rising Mercury is only the 6th lord, and the 10th house is strong with Sun and Moon in it — so the 10th would give the profession, not Mercury. That does not make an accountant.
  • A student proposes Sagittarius: the 7th lord Mercury is then in lagna. PVNR agrees — he had the same thought.
    • 7th lord in lagna = someone in business.
    • Mercury is also the 10th lord, and Mercury is accounting.
  • How the saved time went wrong: it was rectified when the software used Lahiri ayanamsa. Under Lahiri the lagna is 14°57'28" Leo, safely Sagittarius in D-10. The software now uses a different ayanamsa, which pushed the lagna just past the border.
  • PVNR's guess at the original: a round figure such as 12:30, moved back to reach Sagittarius.
  • Fix: the software reports that the D-10 lagna changes at 12:25:32.5. He sets 12:25:30.

"We do not know for sure. It could still be wrong by a few seconds. It is either this time or a few seconds, a couple of minutes earlier."

The site's chart is cast two seconds earlier still (12:25:28): its ayanamsa puts the border about a second before 12:25:30, and at 12:25:28 it gives the D-10 lagna of the class, 29°57' Sagittarius.

Reading the D-10 by bhava

PVNR reads this D-10 with the divisional longitudes: houses are counted from the lagna's degree, not sign by sign. Because the lagna is at the very end of Sagittarius, every planet falls one house earlier than its sign suggests. Lordships are still counted from Sagittarius.

In the class software Ketu is at 20° Cancer with Mars. The site's chart uses the mean node and puts Ketu at 0° Leo.

Daśā System and the Mars Daśā

Which daśā

  • Lagna is vargottama, so Satabdika daśā applies, started from lagna. Vimshottari is kept for cross-checking.
  • Mars daśā: 1989 – 2009 (20 years).
  • Saturn daśā: from June 2009 (30 years). Within six months of it starting he made a huge change in his career.

Mars in D-10

  • By sign Mars is in the 8th from Sagittarius. By bhava he is in the 7th house.
  • He is the 5th lord (Aries), lord of pūrva-puṇya — a functional benefic. He should do good to the career.
  • The 7th is business, partnership. So Mars does not give service under someone else. He gives a partnership.

Why an accountant

  • Mercury is 7th lord and 10th lord, placed in lagna's sign: business and the overall work both come from Mercury.
  • Mercury alone could be a mathematics teacher. He is in Sagittarius, a sign of Jupiter, and Jupiter's signs show law, teaching or the finance world.
  • A student objects that Mercury is in the 12th house. PVNR: the house may be the 12th, but the sign is Jupiter's.

Mars in maraṇa-kāraka-sthāna

  • A student points out that the 7th is Mars's maraṇa-kāraka-sthāna.
  • What that means: the planet is so attached to the house he sits in that he looks after it and forgets the houses he owns. Mars is the planet of enterprise. Put in the house of enterprise, he dedicates himself to it.
  • His own house, the 5th, may suffer. For the 7th he gives excellent results.

Debilitation

  • Mars is debilitated in Cancer. (A student reads him in Gemini from the bhava chart. That chart only shows the house. Read debility and exaltation from the actual aṁśa.)
  • Exalted planets show idealism. Debilitated planets show pragmatism.

"I know that this is not the right thing to do, I am not happy doing it, but this is what it takes to get things done, so I will do it. That attitude is shown by debilitated planets."

  • An exalted Mars would not give a bribe. This one may bribe, or cook the books — he is capable of it.
  • A debilitated planet can also show a very hard worker. With exalted planets things come easily.

Nīcabhaṅga

  • Jupiter, who is exalted in Cancer, is in the 1st house. Moon, the owner of Cancer, is in the 10th. Both are in kendras from lagna (by bhava).
  • The debility is cancelled. Nīcabhaṅga of a functional benefic is a rāja yoga.

Ketu

  • Ketu is with Mars and, as co-lord of Scorpio, is the 12th lord of giving up. That is an affliction.
  • But Mars is at 29° Cancer and Ketu at 20° — nine degrees apart, not within 5–6°. PVNR ignores it.

Result

  • Mars gives pragmatism, a good work ethic — a workaholic — and a mind so set on business that he ignores other things.
  • The daśā that has gone by was good for his business. His ten years in business all fall inside it.

Why Saturn Broke the Partnership

Timing

  • Saturn daśā began in June 2009, give or take a month. Mars's hold on his mind receded and Saturn's grew.
  • A split in January must have been in his mind for some months. It was Saturn who broke the partnership.

A7

  • A student notes Saturn is the 2nd and 3rd lord; another says a partnership is seen from A7.
  • The 7th house is the relationship. A7 is how it shows tangibly — the formal partnership on paper.
  • In this D-10, A7 is at 10°30' Aries.
  • Mars owns Aries. So besides sitting in the 7th house, Mars is the lord of A7.

"There is no wonder that the entire Mars dasha he was pretty much in a partnership. He was doing business."

Saturn from A7

  • Saturn is also in Aries, so by sign he looks to be with A7.
  • Take A7 as the reference degree: its 1st house runs from 10° Aries to 10° Taurus. Saturn is at 4° Aries. He is in the 12th house from A7 — break, giving up.
  • For the business, Mars is the lagna lord placed in the 4th with argala on it. Saturn is the planet in the 12th.
  • Saturn is also the bādhaka lord from A7 (Aries is movable; its 11th, Aquarius, is Saturn's).
  • So as soon as Saturn came, he broke the partnership Mars had given.

Enemy of Mars

  • Had Jupiter been in that 12th house, he would not have broken it outright. As a friend of Mars he would have caused a compromise — the native handing the business to the partner and turning passive, some lessening. The 12th is not always complete giving up.
  • Saturn is an enemy of Mars. He broke it.

Why a mining company

  • Saturn is the planet of mining, oil, coal — heavy, old-fashioned industry.
  • Saturn daśā has begun and he has gone into a Saturnine industry.

Enterprise to service

Asked later in the class why a man with this chart took employment:

  • 7th lord in lagna, Mars in the 7th house, Mars lord of A7, Mars the kāraka of enterprise.

"This is a pakka enterprise chart. He was an entrepreneur until now."

  • From lagna, Saturn is in the 4th house and aspects the 6th house of service by his 3rd aspect. He has some aspect on the 7th too, but more on the 6th.
  • Saturn and Mars are opposites. Saturn is the servant. Mars is the entrepreneur. Business kāraka Mars, service kāraka Saturn.
  • He passed from Mars daśā to Saturn daśā, and from his own business to working for somebody else.
