Example Chart (1983, Leo Lagna) — Narayana Dasha Career: Pachakadi Relationships (Pachaka/Bodhaka/Karaka/Vedhaka) & Kalachakra 8-Spoke System (Indira Gandhi: Death, Power, Sanjay)
A student asks whether Narayana Dasha shows a permanent position at work. The teacher has him read the natal chart from the progressed lagna before the period entry chart, split the Libra dasha in three parts, and then move to the Dasamsa Narayana Dasha: Aries, the 2nd house, holding A6 — fights at the workplace and permanent service, not business. Vimshottari is then read in the Dasamsa: Ketu, 9th lord in the 11th, with antardashas ranked Venus, Sun, Moon and then Mars and Jupiter as the good ones. Pachakadi Sambandha (Pachaka ripens, Bodhaka explains, Karaka executes, Vedhaka obstructs) explains why Venus gave a break and why the Sun antardasha troubles the 9th house — boss and guidance. The class ends with the Kalachakra of a Tithi Pravesha chart, an axle and eight spokes, used only to confirm what the divisional charts show; four years of Indira Gandhi’s life are the examples.
Key principle
Compared to Venus, Sun is better. Compared to Sun, Moon is better. But Mars antardasha should be good. Until then, things will go slowly, but once the Mars antardasha comes, things should be better.

Chart Analysis — Career Question (Leo Lagna, 1983)
A student brings his own chart. Things at his workplace point to a full-time position, and he wants to know whether Narayana Dasha shows it and whether he is reading the dasha correctly.
Rasi Narayana Dasha
- The 7th house is stronger than lagna, so Narayana Dasha starts from the 7th (Aquarius). It traces the progression of the 7th house.
- Running dasha: Libra, 2008–2016, eight years. Narayana is in Libra, the 3rd house. The progressed lagna is the opposite sign, Aries.
The student's reading: he went to the period entry chart, where the 8th lord Sun is exalted and joins the yogakaraka Venus, and expected ups and downs in career.
The teacher's correction — natal chart first:
- Take Aries as lagna in the natal chart. The 10th lord Saturn is in the 7th, exalted but retrograde. Not so well placed.
- The 6th lord Mercury joins the 5th lord Sun, who is exalted, in the progressed lagna. That is good for career.
- From the 9th house (Sagittarius), the 8th and 9th lords exchange signs: Ketu in Sagittarius, Jupiter in Scorpio. A bad combination for the 9th.
- Rule: trust what is common to the natal chart and the period entry chart.
"If you see something only in the period entry chart, it may not really mean much. So try to look for things that are common between the two."
- The progressed lagna Aries holds A6 (obstacles, rivals, service). The dasha activates it.
The three parts of the dasha
The teacher calls this more reliable than the antardasha. The rule is applied to the dasha sign, not to the progressed lagna.
- Libra is a Śīrṣodaya sign, so the sign gives its results first.
- First third (2008 to January 2011): Libra itself, the 3rd house — initiative, effort, fight. This was running at the time of the class.
- Middle third (2011 to 2013): the lord Venus, who is also in a Śīrṣodaya sign. Venus is the 3rd and 10th lord in the 11th. Gains in career and in 3rd house matters.
- Last third (2013 to 2016): occupant and aspectors. Saturn is exalted in Libra. Mars aspects Libra by rāśi dṛṣṭi from Taurus.
Dasamsa Narayana Dasha
- The Rasi Narayana Dasha shows too many things. For career go straight to the Dasamsa Narayana Dasha.
- It starts from Leo. This is the progression of the 10th lord, not of lagna.
- Running dasha: Aries, since 2002. Aries is the 2nd house of the Dasamsa (Pisces lagna): money, resources.
- Aries is a Pṛṣṭhodaya sign, so the sign gives its results in the last third. The lord Mars is also in a Pṛṣṭhodaya sign and takes the middle third. Occupants and aspectors take the first third.
- Middle third (just ended): Mars, exalted in the 11th of the Dasamsa with Ketu and with the Badhaka lord Mercury. Mixed, but good.
- Last third (just begun): the 2nd house. More money and more resources to do the job.
- A6 is in Aries in the Dasamsa. A6 in a sign of Mars gives its results strongly: fights and tension at the workplace over the next couple of years.
- The student asks whether A6 can mean service. Yes: a permanent position. It is not conducive to business.
Period entry chart of a Dasamsa Narayana Dasha: the student tried it. The teacher: the tradition does not teach how to read it. This dasha progresses the 10th lord, not lagna. Experiment if you like.
Vimshottari Dasha read in the Dasamsa
Vimshottari shows how the mind views things. Ketu Mahadasha began about a year and a half before the class.
Ketu in the Dasamsa:
- 9th lord in the 11th, with the 7th lord Mercury and with Mars, who is the 2nd lord and the other 9th lord, exalted.
- A functional benefic for Pisces lagna, in the house of gains.
- One blemish: Mercury is the Badhaka lord. Ketu with the Badhaka lord gives some inexplicable trouble.
- Overall a dasha of gains in profession.
Ketu in the Rasi:
- 4th lord in the 5th. The 4th and 5th lords, Ketu and Jupiter, exchange signs.
- The 4th is learning and the 5th is knowledge. A good time for Vedic learning, astrology and similar subjects. The peak is Ketu–Jupiter.
Antardashas (all placements in the Dasamsa):
| Antardasha | Reading |
|---|---|
| Venus (just over) | 8th lord in the 6th: Viparita Raja Yoga, but Venus is in Maraṇa Kāraka Sthāna there. In the 2nd from Arudha Lagna, where a planet in Maraṇa Kāraka Sthāna does not nourish the image well. In the 8th from the dasha lord, though yogakaraka from him. Bhoga falls in lagna, with Ghati Lagna and A9: a new beginning, a break. Mixed, not smooth. |
| Sun (running) | Bhoga in the 9th: some fortune. 6th lord in the 10th, an Artha-trikona lord in an Artha trikona: busy with work. From the dasha lord, 8th lord in the 12th: Viparita Raja Yoga, but in Maraṇa Kāraka Sthāna. Neutral. Hard work. A short antardasha. |
| Moon | Bhoga in lagna. 5th lord (recognition) in the 12th: some compromise, not bad. From the dasha lord, 7th lord in the 2nd of money. Decent; better than the two before. |
| Mars | The other 9th lord, exalted in the 11th. From the dasha lord, the 4th and 11th lord exalted in lagna. Very good both ways. |
| Rahu | Okay. |
| Jupiter | Lagna lord in the 9th, in A11. Dasha lord in the 11th, antardasha lord in A11: the 11th is fully activated. Very good. |
- A student asks whether Rahu and Moon, in each other's signs, exchange results. Unlikely. Moon acts as Moon. Mars acts as Mars.
"Compared to Venus, Sun is better. Compared to Sun, Moon is better. But Mars antardasha should be good." … "Until then, things will go slowly."
- Confirm each year with the Tithi Pravesha chart.
Pachakadi Sambandha
The Venus antardasha gave the student a break. Beyond lordship and placement, the teacher checks the Pachakadi relationships of Venus in the Dasamsa. A planet standing in one of four fixed places from another planet acts on that planet's results:
| Relationship | Meaning | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Pachaka | ripening, cooking | Results that are partly there are speeded up and made ready |
| Bodhaka | explaining | Guides; gives clarity about the other planet's results |
| Karaka | doer | Executes; gets the other planet's results done |
| Vedhaka | obstruction | Puts the brakes on the other planet's results |
Ask from which planet, and what that planet owns or signifies.
Venus (the break):
- In Pachaka sthana from Moon. Moon is the 5th lord. Lagna and the 5th house matter for a break: the 5th is recognition of ability. Venus ripened it.
- In Karaka sthana from Sun. Sun is the 6th lord (service) in the 10th (career) and the karaka of career. Venus got service and career done.
- These worked in addition to the bhoga falling in lagna.
Sun (running):
- By nature Sun is Vedhaka to Moon, Jupiter and Venus. Jupiter is the lagna lord and Moon the 5th lord here.
- But by place Sun is in Karaka sthana from Moon. He wants to get things done for Moon. The two cancel.
- What stands out: Sun is in Vedhaka sthana from Mars, the 9th lord, and the teacher also counts him as Vedhaka from Jupiter, who is in the 9th.
- So the 9th house is obstructed: protection, boss, guidance. Not only obstruction — lessons taught through situations.
"You may not get good guidance from the boss. Your boss may be misleading you."
Venus in Maraṇa Kāraka Sthāna — a student's doubt
- The student had heard that Venus in Maraṇa Kāraka Sthāna deprives the results of the houses he owns, here the 3rd and the 8th.
- The 8th has two sides: longevity and the end of longevity. An 8th lord in Maraṇa Kāraka Sthāna can give death. Or there is no death and the tensions are removed some other way. Both are possible.
- As 3rd lord Venus could give a short break. Being in Maraṇa Kāraka Sthāna he may not.
Kalachakra — Axle and Eight Spokes
A student asks when the Kalachakra in the software is used. One use is in the annual Tithi Pravesha chart.
Structure
- An axle in the middle holding 4 nakshatras.
- 8 spokes, 3 nakshatras each, named after the lords of the directions:
| Spoke | Planets here bring |
|---|---|
| Indra | Power |
| Agni | Prosperity, well-being |
| Yama | Death and similar unexpected troubles |
| Nirriti | Curses of gods and other beings |
| Varuna | Suffering, or great effort and hard work; foreign lands |
| Vayu | Dispersion of energy, wandering |
| Kubera | Money |
| Ishana | Blessings of gods |
How it is drawn
- The usual reference is the Moon's nakshatra. The software also allows the Sun's or the lagna's.
- For a Tithi Pravesha chart the teacher recommends the nakshatra of the lagna.
- That nakshatra goes at the eastern tip, the end of Indra's spoke. Count 1, 2, 3 inward along Indra's spoke. The 4th is in the axle. 5, 6, 7 go outward along Agni's spoke. 8, 9, 10 come inward from the tip of Yama's spoke, and so on round the wheel.
- The planets are placed by their nakshatras in the rasi chart.
- The class examples below reproduce when Abhijit is counted (28 nakshatras: 8 × 3 + 4).
Tip of the spoke and axle
- A planet in the nakshatra at the tip of a spoke gives the spoke's result most prominently. The middle nakshatra less. The one beside the axle least; it is almost on the axle.
- A student had it the other way round. The teacher: the axle is the basic support. Each spoke is a direction, and the pull in that direction is strongest at the end.
- The spokes pull in different directions and the axle holds everything together. Planets in the axle are the foundation of the year.
It confirms; it does not predict
- "You don't say, okay, Jupiter is in Yama's spoke, so in Jupiter dasha you will die."
- Find the event in the rasi and divisional charts first: a Maraka in the rasi or Rudramsa for death, the Saptamsa for a child, the rasi, Hora and Dasamsa for wealth. Then see whether one of those planets is in the matching spoke: Yama's for death, Kubera's for wealth.
- The teacher's own view of it: knowledge passed down in the tradition, not reliable by itself, and probably something in its use is missing. The Tithi Pravesha chart and its divisions are far more reliable. "Use it sparingly, use it with caution."
The student's own 2008–09 Tithi Pravesha is opened to show the layout: Jupiter in Uttarashadha in Yama's spoke; Venus in Ashwini and Moon in Uttarabhadra in Varuna's spoke.
Kalachakra Examples — Indira Gandhi
The data used in class
November 19, 1917, 11:07 PM IST. The teacher has no birthplace on file and has entered Delhi; he says the data may not be exact and need not be for this purpose.
His Tithi Pravesha moments come from his own software (a modified ayanamsa, the centre of the Sun). The students' software gave slightly different times. The site's engine also lands a few minutes away, so some divisional lagnas of the annual charts differ on the site. The differences are named under each example. Planets and nakshatras agree.
Example 1: Assassination (October 31, 1984)
- Chart: the 1983–84 Tithi Pravesha, December 10, 1983, about 3 AM. Libra lagna.
- One planet is in Yama's spoke: Moon, and not at the tip. (Lagna in Swati, Moon in Dhanishta — the 10th nakshatra, the one beside the axle.)
- Does Moon have a role in death? For a violent death look at the Rudramsa. Moon is the 8th lord of the Rudramsa.
- The Marakas of the rasi chart are Mars (2nd and 7th lord), Jupiter (3rd lord in the 2nd) and Rahu (a malefic in the 8th). None of them is in Yama's spoke.
- "At least the Rudramsa 8th lord is in Yama's spoke. So there is a possibility of death."
Example 2: Return to Power (January 1980)
- Chart: the 1979–80 Tithi Pravesha. Cancer lagna.
- Mars and Rahu are in Indra's spoke (lagna in Pushya; both in Magha, the 3rd nakshatra).
- Rasi: Mars is the 5th lord of power and the lord of Arudha Lagna.
- Dasamsa: Mars is the 6th lord in the 5th house of power, the Ghati Lagna lord on the teacher's data, and in the 3rd from Arudha Lagna.
- He owns the house of power in the rasi, sits in the house of power in the Dasamsa, and is in Indra's spoke. He can give political power.
- It need not come in his own dasha. It came in the Tithi Ashtottari dasha of Venus: the 5th lord, placed in the 5th from Arudha Lagna. (This holds in the teacher's Dasamsa, Gemini lagna.)
- On the site the Dasamsa lagna of this chart shows as Taurus and the Saptamsa lagna as Aquarius. The teacher's Tithi Pravesha moment is a few minutes later, giving Gemini and Pisces.
Example 3: Sanjay Gandhi's Death (June 1980)
- Same 1979–80 chart. Sun and Mercury are in Yama's spoke (Anuradha and Vishakha, the 10th and 9th nakshatras). A student asks what they show.
- Rudramsa: nothing much.
- Saptamsa, Pisces lagna (the students' software gave Aquarius). The second child is seen from the 7th house, Virgo. Its lord Mercury is in Aries. Take Aries as the lagna of the second son for the year.
- From Aries: the 8th lord Ketu is in lagna with the 6th lord Mercury. The 6th and 8th lords together in lagna show an accident. Ketu makes it violent.
- Sun is in the 3rd from Aries, the house of the circumstances of death.
- Both planets tied to the child's death in the Saptamsa are in Yama's spoke. The two corroborate.
- He died in Mercury dasha of Tithi Ashtottari (May 12 to July 11).
"Planets in Yama's spoke not only kill the person, they may kill father, mother, brother, anybody. They bring Yama to the person's life."
- The prediction rests on the Saptamsa. "Even if they weren't in Yama's spoke, still the event could have been given. And if they were in Yama's spoke but the Saptamsa did not show anything, the son wouldn't have died."
Example 4: Loss of Power (1977)
- Chart: the 1976–77 Tithi Pravesha. Sagittarius lagna.
- A planet in Indra's spoke can also take power away. He brings Indra's energy into the life, and if he is not conducive to power he misdirects it.
- Venus is at the tip of Indra's spoke (in Purvashadha, the lagna's own nakshatra), so he gives results about power prominently.
- Rasi: Venus is the 6th lord in lagna, exchanging signs with the lagna lord Jupiter. The lord of obstacles. He does not show power.
- Dasamsa: the teacher's software shows Leo lagna, but 40 seconds earlier it is Cancer, and he takes Cancer. Then Venus is in the 12th.
- She lost power in the Tithi Ashtottari dasha of Moon. Rasi: Moon is the 8th lord in the 2nd, and the 10th lord is in the 12th. Dasamsa (Cancer lagna): the lagna lord Moon is in the 6th with the 8th lord Rahu — the lagna lord eclipsed in a dusthana — and in the 8th from Arudha Lagna.
- On the site the Dasamsa lagna of this chart shows as Taurus; the planets are in the signs the teacher uses.
- Axle: the only two planets in the axle are Moon and Saturn. Moon is the 8th lord of the rasi and Saturn is in the 8th house.
"The only two planets in the axle of the Kalachakra are associated with the 8th house. So it shows the axle has some holes in it. So this is a rough ride."
- The reverse also holds. Planets in the axle that form a Raja Yoga in the rasi, Dasamsa or Navamsa — 9th, 10th, 11th lords — show a good year.
