Example Chart (1975, Gemini Lagna) — D10 Rectification Tested by Events and Dropped, Navamsha Verification, Saturn in AL = Status Trouble & Contract Work Safer than Employment

A software engineer’s chart (1975, Gemini lagna) brought with a career question. The teacher suspects the D-10 lagna should be Leo, not Cancer, and the D-9 lagna Sagittarius, not Scorpio, and tests both against the marriage (December 2001) and the first job (March 2002) using Chaturaśīti-sama daśā, the 2001 Tithi Praveśa chart and Narayana daśā. The annual chart and the Scorpio Narayana daśā of the navāṁśa both support the time as given, so nothing is changed: Scorpio D-9 and Cancer D-10 stand. The year is then read: Sun–Saturn antardaśā (July 2007 – April 2009) with Saturn, the 8th lord, in the ārūḍha lagna of D-10 is bad for status and brings trouble with bosses, and the 2008 Tithi Praveśa confirms a bad year for service — she had just been given notice. Advice: short-term contract work, a good window from September 12 to December 16, a possible shock after that, and worship of Venkaṭeśvara for Saturn and Rahu.

Key principle

If you jump to a conclusion, all your readings will be based on wrong data. So you should spend some time, convince yourself. Unfortunately our knowledge is imperfect — we can only say this makes some sense, this makes a little more sense, but I cannot rule this out.

Example chart — career query, lagna and daśā check (1975)
Jul 2, 1975 · 5:00 AM IST · India
Gemini lagna 4°48′ with Sun and Saturn; lagna lord Mercury with Ketu in the 12th; Jupiter, the 10th lord, in the 10th with Moon (hence Chaturaśīti-sama daśā). D-10: Cancer lagna — Sun in the 5th, 10th lord Mars in Gemini in the 12th, Mercury exalted in the 3rd, Jupiter, Venus and Rahu in Leo, Saturn in Pisces in the 9th, which is also the ārūḍha lagna. The rejected alternative is Leo lagna, with Mercury exalted in the 2nd. D-9: Scorpio lagna — Mars and Saturn in the 8th, Sun and Ketu in Aquarius, Venus in Aries, Moon in Sagittarius. Scorpio Narayana daśā of D-9 gave the marriage.

Hora lord (ruler of the year) Saturn. D-9: Libra lagna with Moon in the 7th — the wedding came in Moon daśā of the year; Venus and Saturn together in Taurus. Rāśi: Cancer lagna, 7th lord Saturn with Venus in the 11th. D-10: Gemini lagna with Saturn (9th lord) and Venus (5th lord) in lagna — the job came in Saturn daśā. A birth time 8 minutes later would make this D-10 lagna Cancer and put the pair in the 12th, which is why the rectification was dropped.

Hora lord (ruler of the year) Venus; Venus daśā runs first, to September 12. D-10: Scorpio lagna with Venus, Ketu and Saturn in it — bad for service. Sun and Mars in the 11th and Moon in the 5th form the rāja yoga on the 5th–11th axis; Jupiter, the 5th lord, is in the 10th. The teacher’s chart has Mercury, the 8th lord, in Cancer (9th, bādhaka sthāna, ārūḍha lagna); the site computes him at 21°01′ Taurus, just past the boundary, and shows him in Leo.

Chart Analysis — Career Query (1975, Gemini Lagna)

The question

A student brings the chart of a woman, a software engineer and database administrator: how is this year for her? The recording restarts mid-discussion. The teacher first asks whether the birth time is sure, because he is not comfortable with the daśāṁśa lagna.

Events known:

  • Married December 6, 2001
  • First job March 2002
  • Changed job three months before the class
  • A notice to leave from her boss in the two weeks before the class (told only after the teacher reads the year)

Rāśi: Sun and Saturn in lagna; lagna lord Mercury with Ketu in the 12th; Moon and Jupiter in the 10th in Pisces; Mars in the 11th; Venus in the 3rd; Rahu in the 6th.

Step 1 — The doubt about D-10

Cancer D-10 lagna (time as given):

  • 10th lord Mars is in Gemini, Mercury's sign, with Mercury's argalā on him. That points to software, but "it is not fully explaining the career."

Leo D-10 lagna (time a few minutes later):

  • Moon is exalted in the 10th and the 10th lord is Venus, but the 2nd house is very powerful: 2nd lord Mercury is exalted in the 2nd.
  • Career shown by the 2nd house, and it shows computers.
  • Mercury is aspected by Saturn from Pisces (7th aspect) — routine programming — and by Mars from Gemini (4th aspect). Together: database administration.
  • First guess: "Probably the lagna is Leo. It could be Cancer also, but I suspect it is Leo."

Lagna is at 4°47'–4°48'. D-10 lagna becomes Leo at 6°; D-9 lagna becomes Sagittarius only past 6°40'. In clock time the D-10 change is about 5 minutes away and the D-9 change about 8 minutes.

Step 2 — Which daśā, and the two events

Daśā choice: Chaturaśīti-sama daśā (84 years), because the 10th lord is in the 10th house (Jupiter in Pisces). Sun in lagna would call for Ṣaṣṭihāyanī, but he is not that strong, so Chaturaśīti-sama gets precedence.

First job, March 2002 — Sun daśā, Mars antardaśā:

  • Cancer D-10: Sun is the 2nd lord of earning in the 5th house of recognition; Mars is the 10th and 5th lord. "This is actually explaining quite well."
  • Leo D-10: Sun is lagna lord, but why did Mars start the career? At first "not a really great explanation"; later he allows that Mars is the yogakāraka for Leo and can begin a career.

Marriage, December 6, 2001 — again Sun–Mars:

  • Scorpio D-9 (time as given): Sun is the 10th lord and is with Ketu, the co-lord of lagna, in Aquarius. Mars is lagna lord in the 8th. Some explanation, "but we are not fully happy." In rāśi Mars is only the 6th and 11th lord.
  • Sagittarius D-9 (8 minutes later): Sun is the 9th lord of dharma. Mars is in the 7th with Saturn. The present AL would become the UL, in Capricorn, so Mars joins the UL lord. Mars is the 5th and 12th lord and Venus's dispositor — a functional benefic in the 7th "has a good chance of giving marriage."
  • So the navāṁśa, more than the daśāṁśa, suggests adding time.

Step 3 — Tithi Praveśa of 2001

Both events fall in the 2001 annual chart (the year runs from July 2001; the job came in March 2002).

Navāṁśa of the TP chart — lagna Libra, and it would not change for nearly 12 minutes, so both candidate birth times give the same chart:

  • Hora lord (ruler of the year): Saturn.
  • The wedding came in Moon daśā of the year. Moon is in the 7th house of the navāṁśa and is Ketu's dispositor.
  • Lagna lord Venus is in his own sign Taurus with yogakāraka Saturn, who is also the Hora lord. (The site's chart puts them in the 8th from Libra; the recording is unclear on the house number.)
  • In the TP rāśi chart, 7th lord Saturn is in Venus's sign with Venus in the 11th, a kāma trikoṇa.
  • Good indications of marriage; Moon is as good a candidate as any.

Daśāṁśa of the TP chart — lagna Gemini, with about 6 minutes of margin. Adding the 8 minutes the navāṁśa asked for would make it Cancer. The job came in Saturn daśā, the ruler of the year:

  • Cancer: Saturn is the 7th and 8th lord in the 12th with Venus, the 4th and 11th lord. "Does it show getting a job? Not really."
  • Gemini: Saturn is the 9th lord with the 5th lord Venus in lagna — "excellent rāja yoga." He is in maraṇa kāraka sthāna, but he is in lagna, and lagna shows a new beginning in career. From ārūḍha lagna he is in the 9th with the AL lord.
  • So the annual chart supports the time as given. The suspected rectification is not right.

Step 4 — Other daśās tried

  • Ṣaṣṭihāyanī: marriage in Mars–Saturn. No better than Sun–Mars. For the job, Mars as 10th lord can give career, "but why Saturn?" No clarity.
  • Vimśottarī: marriage in Venus–Moon. In the Scorpio navāṁśa Moon is the 9th lord in the 2nd and Venus is the 7th lord but in the 6th. Sun and Mars are both tied to the navāṁśa lagna, so they explain it better.
  • Stay with Chaturaśīti-sama.

Step 5 — Nothing changed, and why the exercise was still worth it

"At the end of all this exercise, we didn't actually change anything." The time could be 5:01 or 5:02, but not 5:06 or 5:08. D-9 lagna stays Scorpio and D-10 lagna stays Cancer.

"If you jump to a conclusion, all your readings will be based on wrong data. So you should spend some time, convince yourself."

"Unfortunately our knowledge is imperfect, so we cannot say this must be it, this cannot be it. We can only say: this makes some sense, this makes a little more sense, but I cannot rule this out."

Even at that level of knowledge prediction is possible. Look at different techniques.

Step 6 — Narayana daśā settles the navāṁśa

A student suggests Narayana daśā of the navāṁśa.

  • For the D-9 Narayana daśā, take the lord of the 9th house. The 9th from Gemini is Aquarius: lords Saturn and Rahu. Take the stronger of the two in navāṁśa, not in rāśi, and start from him.
  • Each is with one planet (Rahu with Mercury; Saturn, in the site's chart, with Mars), so the count is tied; on the full comparison Saturn is stronger.
  • The marriage came in Scorpio daśā — the navāṁśa lagna itself.

"The daśā of the lagna or UL or 7th house — they are certainly capable of giving marriage."

  • "Now we are more confident that Scorpio lagna in navāṁśa is right. Had it been Sagittarius as we surmised earlier, it wouldn't have explained the marriage."

The three parts of the daśā: Scorpio is a śīrṣodaya sign, so the first third gives the sign's own results and the second third the lord's. The lords are Mars and Ketu. Mars fits:

  • lagna lord from navāṁśa lagna
  • lagna lord from Śukra lagna (Venus is in Aries)
  • in the 7th from Chandra lagna (Moon in Sagittarius, Mars in Gemini)

Lagna (intelligence) and Chandra lagna (mind) are the two lagnas that matter in every chart. The third is the kāraka lagna for the matter in hand: Venus for marriage, Sun for success in career, Jupiter for children. From all three, Mars is tied to lagna or the 7th.

Step 7 — Narayana daśā of the daśāṁśa

  • The career began in Scorpio daśā. The teacher's reason in the recording is "6th house — simple." In the site's D-10, Scorpio is the 5th from Cancer lagna and holds the 2nd lord Sun; it is the 6th from the rāśi lagna. Unsettled which he meant.
  • Running now: Virgo daśā, the 3rd house of D-10, until July 2011.
    • It holds the UL and the 12th lord: losses or compromises.
    • Mercury is the 3rd lord in the 3rd, in his own sign: very good for contract work, communication, technical writing.
    • A natural benefic in the 3rd is not so good — some loss of boldness. A planet in own house is always good. A mixed sign.
    • The first third is running, which gives the results of the sign itself: a benefic sign in the 3rd — some loss of initiative, some disappointment. A chance of negative results until July 2011.

Step 8 — Chaturaśīti-sama daśā now: Sun–Saturn

In the natal D-10 (Cancer lagna):

  • Sun daśā: Sun is in the 5th, good. But he is in A8.
  • Saturn antardaśā, July 2007 to April 2009:
    • Saturn is the 7th and 8th lord — neutral by Parāśara, but a duḥsthāna lord — and Ketu's dispositor.
    • He is in the ārūḍha lagna (Pisces). "That is the worst thing." Saturn in the 12th from AL would have been good; Saturn in AL is not good for status. Ārūḍha results come out more in the antardaśā.
    • He is the 8th lord in the 9th: trouble on account of the boss.
    • The 8th lord, a planet in the 8th, or a planet tied to A8 can always give a job change.
  • The 9th lord: Jupiter is in Leo with Rahu, the 8th co-lord, and Venus, the bādhaka lord, and with Māndi. Guru-chāṇḍāla yoga. The 9th house holds the 8th lord Saturn. In general she has some difficulty getting along with bosses.
  • Rahu has no daśā in this system. His results are given by his dispositor (Sun) or by Saturn. Sun daśā, Saturn antardaśā: Rahu's results come out strongly. "That is another reason for this roller-coaster ride."
  • The good side: A5 (recognition) and A9 (fortune) are in the 11th from AL and in a quadrant from lagna. Some sudden recognition cannot be ruled out.

The native's side confirms it: problems with bosses for the last year and a half; she left the previous job quickly because of them, and the same trouble has come up in the new one.

"From 2007 July to 2009 April is a bad time."

Step 9 — Tithi Praveśa of 2008

The year begins June 26, 2008. The teacher is asked to say what happened in the last two weeks.

D-10 of the TP chart, Scorpio lagna:

  • Ruler of the year: Venus, and Venus daśā runs first, until September 12.
  • Venus, Ketu and Saturn are together in lagna — a tapasvī yoga in the daśāṁśa.
  • Venus (7th lord) with Ketu (co-lord of lagna) is not that bad. Saturn spoils them: he is the 3rd and 4th lord — the 4th neutral, the 3rd malefic, so overall a malefic for this lagna — and he is in maraṇa kāraka sthāna.
  • The 7th house is the māraka for service. From the 6th house of service Venus is the 2nd and 7th lord in the 8th.
  • Bad for someone in service; not bad for someone in business. "This is a bad time for career, until September 12th."
  • Venus is the lord of A10, and A10 is in the 12th from lagna: some loss of career this year.
  • Mercury, kāraka for service with Saturn, is the 8th lord in the bādhaka sthāna and in the ārūḍha lagna. "Anybody having to do with bādhaka and the 8th house is quite bad." (The site's chart has Mercury at 21°01' Taurus, a hair past the 21° boundary, so it shows him in Leo, the 10th; the teacher's chart has him in Cancer, the 9th.)
  • Sun (10th lord), Mars (lagna lord) and Moon (9th lord) are on the 5th–11th axis: a rāja yoga. Their daśās will be good.
  • Jupiter is good: in A8, but the 5th lord in the 10th.
  • A3 is in the 11th house.

The feedback: she got a notice to leave from her boss, suddenly.

The reading for the year:

  • "This is a very bad year for service." It is the remaining part of the Saturn antardaśā.
  • A new job before the end of Venus daśā is possible — Venus is in lagna — and she should try.
  • September 12 to December 16: "three months is a very good time, excellent time."
  • December 16 to February 10, Mercury: "a chance of another shock. I won't say it will happen, but there is a good chance. She should be prepared."
  • A student's suggestion, which the teacher calls very good advice: with Mercury so strong in the natal D-10 and the Narayana daśā activating him, and A3 in the 11th of the year, go for a contract, a short-term one, this year. In service there will be many disappointments.
  • "She will get a job relatively easily, but this seems a rocky year." If she does take a service job, she should not be too disappointed if something goes wrong within a few months.

Step 10 — Remedy

  • The trouble with bosses is "not a lifelong thing, this is a current thing" — it comes from the antardaśā working on the natal weakness.
  • The main culprits are Saturn and Rahu. Combined remedy for Saturn and Rahu: Venkaṭeśvara — a stotra or mantra of Lord Venkaṭeśvara. "Govinda, Govinda."
  • Saturn is the amātyakāraka. In navāṁśa the 6th from him is Scorpio, Mars's sign, so Mars shows the pālana devatā; Mars is with Saturn, so the same worship covers it.

Step 11 — Personality and the image at work

Rāśi:

  • Sun in lagna makes a person confident and assertive, royal. Here Saturn afflicts him.
  • Lagna lord Mercury is in the 12th with Ketu: inherent spirituality and humility. The 12th is the maraṇa kāraka sthāna for Sun — the opposite of Sun's nature.
  • "She is torn between the two personalities." Sometimes very assertive, sometimes very humble, sometimes unsure and confused. Which one shows depends on daśā, antardaśā and gochara.
  • Sun–Saturn in lagna and lagna lord with Ketu in the 12th are both bad for material things. The second is good for spirituality.
  • A student adds: the 12th from the ātmakāraka (Jupiter) in navāṁśa holds Ketu and Sun. The teacher agrees — she is quite spiritual.

The image she projects in career — AL of D-10:

  • AL is in Pisces: soft, gentle, not a fighter.
  • It holds Saturn, the 8th lord, not a good Saturn: she comes across as incapable.
  • If Saturn is made benefic through Venkaṭeśvara, she comes across as a hard worker.
  • "She has to come across either as a hardworking person or as an idiot, but not as a really smart, brilliant kind of person. So shooting for that is futile."
  • The practical step: put in longer hours. That makes Saturn give his hard-work result and lessens the other. A planet gives one or other of its results; raise one consciously and the other reduces.

Closing: she should find a new job easily, but it may not last long.
