Pada Divisional Longitude Transit: Within 2-4° of Pada's D-Chart Longitude Triggers Events; Three Lagnas for Marriage (7H from Lagna=Physical, Moon=Mental, Venus=Conjugal Spirit); the native (1980, Virgo Lagna): Saturn-Rahu MD-AD = Marriage + TP 7th Lord in 7H Confirms

Verse 23 of BPHS Ch.30 leads to a timing technique: an ārūḍha pada has a divisional longitude in every varga, and a marriage planet transiting within 2-4 degrees of the Upapada's navāṁśa longitude can bring marriage. The page gives the orb, the teacher's research method and how to compute a divisional longitude by hand. The case study is a Virgo-lagna chart married in February 2005 in Saturn-Rahu of Vimshottari. Marriage is judged from three references — the 7th from lagna (physical), from the Moon (mental) and from Venus (the spirit of enjoyment) — and in the navāṁśa Saturn and Rahu are tied to those 7th houses when the houses are measured by divisional longitude. The Tithi Praveśa of the marriage year, read after a small change to the birth time, shows the annual daśā lord Jupiter as 7th lord in a kāma house and the lagna lord in the 7th.

Key principle

7th house from Venus shows partnership from the point of view of spirit of enjoyment within you. 7th house from Moon is partnership from the point of view of mind, mental partnership. And 7th house from Lagna is physical partnership, physical companionship.

Virgo lagna. Open the navāṁśa: Aquarius lagna, Saturn (lagna lord) in the 10th in the last minutes of Scorpio — the class has him at 0°02' Sagittarius — aspecting the 7th by graha dṛṣṭi. The Moon is exalted at about 19° Taurus, so Saturn falls in the 7th house from the Moon when houses are measured by divisional longitude. Venus is in Sagittarius; Saturn is in the 12th house from Venus and aspects the 7th from Venus. Rahu is in Aries, the 3rd from lagna and by longitude the 11th from the Moon, aspecting the 7th from both. Marriage came in Saturn-Rahu, February 2005.

Annual chart for the year of marriage. Look at its navāṁśa: Gemini lagna, lagna lord Mercury in the 7th (Sagittarius), 7th lord Jupiter in the 3rd (Leo) with Rahu. Jupiter's annual daśā gave the marriage. In class the Tithi Praveśa first showed a Taurus navāṁśa lagna, with Jupiter as 8th lord in the 4th, and came to Gemini only after the birth time was moved by about 2 minutes 40 seconds; the site's engine gives Gemini at the recorded time.

Verse 23 — Transits over a Pada's Divisional Longitude

The verse is recited ("lagna-padād upārūḍhe…"), but the recording breaks during its explanation. It resumes on the last words — a planet "very close to the longitude, within a couple of degrees" — and on a student's question about "padāṁśa and transits".

The Rule

  • An ārūḍha pada has a longitude, so it has a divisional longitude in every varga, not just a sign.
  • When a planet that matters for the event transits within a few degrees of the divisional longitude of the related pada, the event can come.
  • Marriage: take the Upapada's longitude in navāṁśa. A planet that has something to do with marriage in the natal navāṁśa, transiting close to that point, gives a chance of marriage.

The teacher's example: UL in Libra in rāśi; its navāṁśa divisional longitude about 8°30' Gemini. A marriage planet transiting roughly 6° to 12° of Gemini fits.

Orb

  • 2-3 degrees, or 3-4 degrees.
  • In some examples the transit planet is exact to the minute. In several it is a degree, a degree and a half, or two degrees away. It is not perfect.

Which Place for the Transit Chart?

Student's question: is the transit chart drawn for the place of marriage? Answer: it does not matter. A window of several degrees of a planet's longitude does not depend on where the chart is cast.

How the Teacher Researched It

  • Two instances of Jagannatha Hora open. One shows the transit chart for a saved event (he keeps many event charts — weddings and so on). The other shows the natal chart with all the padas.
  • Pick the 2-4 planets of interest. In his own chart: Mars is 7th lord in navāṁśa, Jupiter is 7th lord from the Moon and from Venus, Venus is lagna lord and the kāraka.
  • Some of them may closely conjoin the Upapada counted from lagna, or the Upapada counted from Venus. So several ārūḍha padas have to be watched.
  • If nothing interesting transits the D-9 longitude of the Upapada from lagna, check the one from Venus.

Computing a Divisional Longitude by Hand

The released software did not show a user-defined point in the divisional-longitude list. Work-around: find the pada's longitude, define a special point there to see which sign it falls in in each varga, then compute the degree.

Worked example — 8°30' Gemini in D-20:

  • A D-20 part is 30/20 = 1°30'. Parts run 6°–7°30', 7°30'–9°, 9°–10°30'…
  • 8°30' is in the part beginning at 7°30'. It is 1° into it.
  • 1° × 20 = 20°. The software shows the sign: Capricorn. So 20° Capricorn in D-20.
  • In general: divide the longitude by the size of one part, drop the fraction, multiply back, subtract from the longitude, and multiply what is left by the division number (× 9 for navāṁśa, × 24 for D-24).
  • The result is only as accurate as the pada longitude you started from.

Software Note

The next release of Jagannatha Hora is to show the divisional longitudes of the ārūḍha padas of all 12 houses counted from 10 references (lagna and the 9 planets) — 120 padas — in every divisional chart up to D-60. The release was waiting on a fix to a Kālachakra daśā variant.

Case Study — Marriage in Saturn-Rahu

The Case

  • Virgo lagna (3°38'). The family holds the time to be very accurate.
  • Married February 2005.
  • Pregnancies lost in 2007 and in 2009.
  • Out of work for the last two years; getting depressed.
  • The question: is there a possibility of children, or should she adopt?

Which Daśā

The 10th lord Mercury is in the 10th sign but, at 0°10' Gemini against a lagna of 3°38', technically in the 9th house. The teacher drops the point: "Let's just take Vimshottari. In any case Vimshottari will always work."

February 2005 falls in Saturn mahādaśā, Rahu antardaśā.

Three References for Marriage

A student objects when the Moon is brought in. The reply:

"We are not looking at Moon as a planet. We are looking at Moon as a reference. I am not saying Moon gives marriage. I am saying from Moon, 7th lord gives marriage."

  • 7th from lagna — physical partnership, physical companionship.
  • 7th from the Moon — partnership from the point of view of the mind; how the mind views partnership.
  • 7th from Venus — partnership from the point of view of the spirit of enjoyment within you. The spirit of happiness inside is seeking a partner.
  • All three are important for marriage. Parāśara says so.
  • Why Venus and not Jupiter? Jupiter belongs to the sthira kārakas. As naisargika kāraka it is Venus: to see marriage, see the 7th from Venus.

Saturn in the Navāṁśa

Navāṁśa lagna is Aquarius. Houses here are measured from the divisional longitude of the reference, not by sign.

  • From lagna: Saturn is lagna lord and sits in the 10th house. From the 10th he aspects the 7th (his 10th-house graha dṛṣṭi), and the aspect is very close to full.
  • From the Moon: the Moon is exalted in Taurus. By sign Saturn looks like he is in the 8th from the Moon. But the Moon is far advanced in Taurus (18°50' in the navāṁśa) and Saturn is at 0°02' of Sagittarius. So Saturn is in the 7th house from the Moon, not the 8th.
  • From Venus: Saturn is in the 12th house from Venus and aspects the 7th from Venus. Not a full aspect, but an aspect.
  • Saturn is linked to the lagna, the 7th from lagna, the 7th from the Moon and the 7th from Venus. Saturn daśā can give marriage.

(The site's engine puts Saturn at the very end of Scorpio navāṁśa instead of 0°02' Sagittarius — a difference of a few minutes of arc. By sign that is the 10th from Aquarius lagna and the 7th from the Moon, which is the same conclusion.)

Rahu in the Navāṁśa

  • From lagna: Rahu is in Aries, the 3rd house — a kāma trikoṇa — and aspects the 7th house (Rahu's 5th-house graha dṛṣṭi).
  • From the Moon: by sign he looks like the 12th. Looked at carefully, by longitude, he is in the 11th house — again a kāma trikoṇa — and aspects the 7th from the Moon.

"He is in Kama Trikonas both from Lagna and Moon, and he is aspecting the 7th in both cases. So there is a chance of giving marriage."

Tithi Praveśa 2004-05

The marriage came in the annual daśā of Jupiter. Hora lord of the year: Mars. The houses the teacher reads match the navāṁśa of the Tithi Praveśa chart.

With the birth time as given — lagna Taurus:

  • Jupiter is 8th lord, in the 4th house.
  • He is 7th lord from the Moon and 7th lord from Venus, but from lagna he is 8th lord.
  • "Can he give marriage? Not very likely."

With the birth time moved — lagna Gemini:

  • Lagna lord Mercury is in the 7th house.
  • The 7th lord is Jupiter, the daśā lord. He is in the 3rd house, a kāma house, with Rahu, the 9th lord (co-lord of Aquarius).

"Does this explain marriage better or the previous one? This explains marriage better."

  • From this the teacher concludes the birth time has to change by at least 2 minutes 40 seconds. The direction of the change is not clear in the recording.
  • The site's engine already gives the Gemini navāṁśa lagna for the Tithi Praveśa at 13:32 (2 June 2004, 03:12 IST), so the chart on this page is left at the recorded time.
