Example Chart — Woman (Jun 1975, Scorpio Lagna): Three Lagnas in D9 for Marriage (Natal + Venus + Moon), Rahu+Venus Foreign Dasha Confirmed (Karka in 12H + 12L in 9H), D10 Mercury+Rahu+Jupiter — AK as 3L+6L Gives Raj Yoga Bhanga; Jupiter AK Dasha NOT Career Rajyoga

A woman born in Sri Lanka in 1975 (Scorpio lagna 10°53′, Jupiter Atmakaraka and vargottama, running Jupiter dasha). The class first tests the data: the time zone (6h east of GMT kept, 5:30 tried by students) and a 4-minute earlier time that would make the navamsa lagna Virgo; it settles on 4:45 or 4:44 because the D-10 then puts Mercury in the 10th house. Marriage on Jan 21, 2001 in Jupiter–Jupiter is explained from three lagnas in the Libra navamsa: from Lagna Jupiter is 6th lord in the 6th (Harsha yoga); from exalted Venus he is lagna lord in lagna aspecting the 7th and its lord; from the Moon he is in the 7th house. The 2000 Tithi Pravesha (hora lord Mars, Venus dasha) is read alongside, and the teacher says plainly that it does not fall fully into place. Going abroad in April 1995 in Rahu–Venus: Rahu is in the 12th by house, Venus is 7th and 12th lord in the 9th exchanging aspects with the 9th lord Moon. Career: Mercury in Yamamsa with 6th lord Jupiter in the 10th of D-10 gives software testing; D-24 shows Mars on the 9th and 2nd for electrical engineering. Jupiter is 3rd and 6th lord in D-10, so he spoils the 5th–9th lord Raja yoga of Rahu and Mercury — being Atmakaraka does not promise recognition.

Key principle

Lagna is not the only reference. If you take the Venus lagna and Moon lagna, those are the other two lagnas which are important for seeing marriage. He is in the 7th house from Moon, he is aspecting the 7th house and 7th lord from Venus, and he is the lagna lord of Venus in lagna. That can make him, irrespective of the lagna placement, a strong giver of marriage.

D-9 (Libra lagna): Jupiter and exalted Venus in Pisces, Mercury in Cancer in the 10th, Moon in Leo — read Jupiter from Lagna, from Venus and from the Moon. D-10 (Libra lagna 18°50'): Mercury, Jupiter and Rahu in Leo; Mercury and Jupiter fall in the 10th house by longitude, Rahu in the 11th; Jupiter is 3rd and 6th lord. D-24 (Pisces lagna): Mars, Rahu and Ketu in Scorpio in the 9th; the 2nd is Aries.

The Example Chart — Data, Questions and the Time-Zone Doubt

What Is Known

  • Came to the USA: April 1995
  • First job: January 4, 1999
  • Married: January 21, 2001
  • First child, a girl: December 19, 2005
  • Second child, a girl: October 1, 2008
  • Studied electrical engineering; worked as an electrical design engineer; in software testing for the last 10 years; also tried to start her own business
  • Spiritual practice: meditation
  • Atmakaraka: Jupiter (vargottama — Pisces in D-1 and D-9). She is running Jupiter mahadasha, which began in 1999.

Her Questions

  1. Jupiter is Atmakaraka and vargottama. Why is his dasha not giving recognition?
  2. Ketu is 12th from Atmakaraka Jupiter (in her navamsa). She believed in Ganesha in childhood, not much now. Which mantra, which path?
  3. By saptamsa the first child should have been a boy. Why a girl? Is a boy possible?

Which Dasha

  • No special dasha condition applies, so Vimshottari is used.

The Time-Zone Doubt

  • Some students cast the chart with 5:30 east of GMT, like India. That gives a different D-10 lagna, and they read the career from it.
  • The teacher: the time-zone tables in his software came from public data and have errors for some countries. He is not sure of Sri Lanka's.
  • Decision: "The fact that somebody born in Sri Lanka specifically wrote 6 — that is probably the right one. Let us assume that her data is right, 6 hours, and continue."
  • "We should actually have data accurately, the time zone."

The 4-Minute Question

With the given 4:45 PM the D-9 lagna is Libra (about 8°). Jupiter is 6th lord in the 6th — hard to see why his dasha gave marriage.

  • A student's suggestion: 4 minutes earlier (3 min 50 s) the D-9 lagna becomes Virgo. With 4:41 PM (D-1 lagna 9°57'45" Scorpio) Jupiter is the 7th lord of the navamsa — "whether he is in the 7th house or not, he is at least the 7th lord."
  • The 2000 Tithi Pravesha reads better with the 4 minutes taken off (Part 3). The foreign-residence check was done with 4:41 (Part 4).
  • The D-10 pulls the other way. Its lagna is Libra either way — 9°38' with 4:41, 18°50' with 4:45 — but Mercury falls in the 10th house only when the lagna degree is above Mercury's (Part 5).
  • Where the class ends up: "probably the time is not 4:41. It is either 4:45 or maybe 4:44", and the marriage is explained from the Libra navamsa with three lagnas (Part 3).
  • D-7 lagna is the same from 10 minutes earlier to 8 minutes later, so the saptamsa is safe if the time zone is right.
  • No event gave a narrow window. "The time we have seems to explain everything so far."

Marriage Timing — Jupiter–Jupiter, January 21, 2001

Marriage came in Jupiter mahadasha, Jupiter antardasha.

Tithi Pravesha of 2000

The marriage was in January 2001, before the birthday, so the 2000 annual chart applies.

  • Birth tithi: Jyeshtha Krishna Chaturthi. It returned on June 21, 2000 at 3:52:40 AM.
  • Hora lord (ruler of the year): Mars.
  • The dasha of the year running on the wedding day: Venus.
  • TP navamsa, Sagittarius lagna: Mars and Venus are together in Sagittarius. Venus is 6th lord, but he is the karaka of marriage, he is with the ruler of the year, and he is the dispositor of the 7th lord (Mercury in Taurus). Mars is 5th and 12th lord.
  • As cast, Venus falls in the 12th house by longitude. Take the 4 minutes off and the navamsa lagna is 15° Sagittarius: Venus is in the 1st house. The karaka of marriage in the 1st explains the marriage better than in the 12th.
  • From Moon as lagna (Moon in Gemini in the TP navamsa): Venus is 5th lord in the 7th.
  • Vivaha Sahama is at 21° Pisces: no planet aspects it, and its lord Jupiter is not linked to the 7th. Nothing there.
  • The teacher's own verdict: "Do we jump up and say this makes perfect sense? Not really, even with the changed time. Something is not really falling in place yet." The TP can be explained. It does not prove the time.

Natal Navamsa — Three Lagnas

With the original time, D-9 lagna is Libra. "Lagna is not the only reference."

  1. From Lagna: Jupiter is 6th lord in the 6th house — Harsha yoga. By sign he is with Venus, who is lagna lord and 8th lord. Going by the divisional longitudes, Venus (start of Pisces) falls in the 5th house and Jupiter (8° Pisces) is alone in the 6th: "a clean Harsha yoga". A good yoga, but not by itself a marriage combination.
  2. From Venus as lagna: Parashara says take the Sun as lagna for father, the Moon for mother, Venus for marriage. Venus is exalted in Pisces, so Venus-lagna is very powerful here. Jupiter is lagna lord in lagna. He aspects the 7th house (Virgo) and the 7th lord Mercury in Cancer (graha dṛṣṭi, his 5th aspect).
  3. From Moon as lagna: Moon is at 14° Leo, Jupiter at 8° Pisces. Taking houses from the divisional longitudes, Jupiter is in the 7th house from the Moon.

"He is in the 7th house from Moon, he is aspecting the 7th house and 7th lord from Venus, and he is the lagna lord of Venus in lagna. That can make him, irrespective of the lagna placement, a strong giver of marriage."

Foreign Residence — Rahu–Venus, April 1995

She came to the USA in Rahu mahadasha, Venus antardasha. (Checked with the 4:41 time.)

Rasi Chart

  • Rahu is the karaka for foreign residence. He is in the lagna sign, but lagna is 9°57' Scorpio and Rahu is 5°41' Scorpio — by house he is in the 12th.
  • Venus is 7th lord and 12th lord in the 9th house (Cancer).
  • Both are in watery signs, one in the 9th and one in the 12th. "Perfect candidates."
  • The 9th lord Moon (24°51' Capricorn) and Venus (26°45' Cancer) are opposite within two degrees — they exchange aspects (graha dṛṣṭi).
  • 12th lord and 7th lord in the 9th with the aspect of the 9th lord: "a great combination".

Chaturthamsa (D-4)

  • D-4 lagna is Aquarius. Rahu is in the 10th (Scorpio), not the 9th — but he is the karaka, and he is lagna lord (co-lord of Aquarius) debilitated. A debilitated lagna lord can give displacement.
  • Venus is 9th lord in the 3rd house (Aries), aspecting the 9th. A good candidate too.
  • Nothing in D-4 is near a border, so it does not help fix the time.

Tithi Pravesha of 1994

She left in April 1995, before the birthday, so the 1994 annual chart applies.

  • Hora lord: Saturn.
  • April falls in the Moon or Mars dasha of the year (the day is not known). The Moon does not explain it. Mars does: he is 9th lord in the TP rasi, and 12th lord aspecting the 12th in the TP chaturthamsa.
  • Jalapatana Sahama: 27° Scorpio — in the 9th house, owned by Mars.
  • Paradesha Sahama: 7° Gemini — Mercury is very close to it, and Mercury is 7th lord and badhaka lord.
  • Mercury dasha and Mars dasha are the two to expect. It was probably Mars, in the second half of April.
  • A change of 5 min 14 s would alter this chart, so it does not narrow the time.

Career and Education — D-10, D-24, and Why Jupiter Dasha Gives No Recognition

Dasamsa (D-10) — Software Testing

  • D-10 lagna: 18°50' Libra with 4:45 PM; 9°38' Libra with 4:41 PM.
  • Mercury, Jupiter and Rahu are all in Leo. With the lagna at 18°50', Mercury's degree is below the lagna's, so Mercury is in the 10th house, not the 11th. Jupiter is below it too: also in the 10th. Rahu at 27° Leo is in the 11th.
  • Mercury shows computers and software. He is in Yamāṁśa — that turns it to software testing.
  • Jupiter is 6th lord. "Such a Mercury in the 10th house, that too with the 6th lord, can show a software career."
  • This needs the D-10 lagna degree above Mercury's, which is why the time is kept at 4:45 or 4:44.
  • The 10th lord Moon is in the 8th, in Agni-aṁśa.

Which Dasha Built the Career

  • First job, January 4, 1999: Rahu–Mars, just before Jupiter dasha. Rahu is in the 11th but he is 5th lord (co-lord of Aquarius). "The 5th lord can give career. He can initiate the career."
  • Most of the career came in Jupiter dasha. Jupiter and Mercury are the two in the 10th.

Siddhamsa (D-24) — Electrical Engineering

Read with the original time (D-24 lagna Pisces).

  • 9th house (Bachelor's): Scorpio, holding Mars, Rahu and Ketu.
  • 2nd house (Master's): Aries, owned by Mars.
  • Mars influences both levels → electrical engineering fits.

Why Jupiter Dasha Is Not Giving Recognition

Her complaint: Jupiter is Atmakaraka and vargottama, yet his dasha gives no recognition.

  • "Who said that Atmakaraka gives recognition?"
  • Rasi: Jupiter is 5th lord in the 5th. Some areas of life go well — he gave children in his dasha.
  • Navamsa: 6th lord in the 6th. A functional malefic, though the yoga he gives there is fine.
  • Dasamsa: Jupiter is 3rd and 6th lord, a functional malefic, placed in the 10th. "She has a career, she should be happy." He is not giving any Raja yoga.
  • The Leo group in D-10 is the 5th, 6th and 9th lords together. Mercury (9th lord) and Rahu (5th lord) alone would be a Raja yoga. Jupiter as 6th lord spoils it by being there.

"Yes, he is in vargottama, but he is a functional malefic in navamsa and dasamsa. So why is she expecting a great Raja yoga?"
