One chart (June 4, 1974, 9:10 AM IST, Cancer lagna) is checked varga by varga against dated events, using the Vimshottari dasha of each divisional chart. D9 (Virgo lagna): marriage on February 21, 1996 in Jupiter–Mercury — Jupiter is the 7th lord, and lagna lord Mercury sits with 5th lord Saturn in the 5th, the 7th from Venus. D7 (Aquarius lagna): yogakaraka Venus is in the 5th; the class ayanamsa gives Ketu–Mercury and Venus–Moon for the two children, and Ketu cannot be explained, while a second ayanamsa puts both births in Venus dasha — Venus–Venus for the daughter (1998) and Venus–Jupiter for the son (2004), Jupiter being the lord of the second child’s lagna Pisces, exalted in its 5th. D4 (Libra lagna): she went abroad in Jupiter–Rahu, with Rahu in the badhaka sign and Mercury, 9th and 12th lord, exalted in the 12th; the strong 12th keeps her abroad. D24 (Capricorn lagna, even-sign corrected): yogakaraka Venus in the 4th gave the B.Com in 1995, both CPA failures fell in Venus–Mercury, the running Venus–Ketu has Ketu in the 8th from Venus with the debilitated 7th lord Moon, and the advice is to retake the same exam around 2015 in the antardasha of lagna lord Saturn. The birth time is not moved for the class ayanamsa.
Key principle
If your yogakaraka is in the 5th house, or the 5th lord is in the 5th house, or an exalted planet is in the 5th house, he will give very auspicious results related to the 5th house. So in the Venus dasha both the children were born.

The Case — Birth Data and Events
Birth: June 4, 1974, 9:10 AM IST, Andhra Pradesh, India. A woman living in the US. The chart is brought by a fellow student.
Lagnas: Rasi Cancer · D9 Virgo · D4 Libra · D7 Aquarius · D10 Taurus · D24 Capricorn.
Her questions: education — try the CPA again or study something else? — and career. She works in shops and odd jobs and has no stable career. Health comes up at the end.
Events given:
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| B.Com degree | 1995 |
| Marriage | Feb 21, 1996 |
| First came to the US | Jan 26, 1997 |
| First child, a daughter | May 24, 1998 |
| Second child, a son | Apr 11, 2004 |
| CPA exam, failed | Aug 2008 |
| CPA exam, failed | Oct 2010 |
- Both CPA attempts failed narrowly — by a couple of marks.
- The family went back to India to settle, gave up their house, and returned to the US on August 21 of the year of the class (2012), after only a few months.
The birth time is kept
All timing in this case uses the Vimshottari dasha of each divisional chart. PVNR checks every divisional lagna against an event and does not move the time for the ayanamsa the class uses.
- D7: about 2 minutes later the lagna becomes Pisces. Almost 17 minutes earlier it would change the other way. Pisces fails (see the D7 part). "Lagna is not off by more than a couple of minutes."
- D24: 2.5 minutes earlier the lagna changes. The B.Com fits Capricorn. "So we will just stick to this lagna."
- D10: a student proposes other times. A change of 4 minutes breaks what was already verified. Taurus stays.
He is also testing a second ayanamsa in a second window (its name is unclear in the recording). With it the D7 lagna comes out different, so for that ayanamsa only he moves the time back by about 1 minute 10 to 1 minute 30 seconds. With the class ayanamsa, "stick with the current time."
"When we use the divisional Vimshottari, it's four times more sensitive than the Vimshottari. And if there are ayanamsa errors, this can change."
Two close ayanamsas give mostly the same chart, but the dashas shift. Here they are off by about 6 years.
D9 — Marriage
Event: February 21, 1996. Dasha (D9 Vimshottari): Jupiter–Mercury.
D9 lagna is Virgo.
- Jupiter is the 7th lord (in the 8th house). His dasha is running. "Jupiter is the 7th lord, so he can give marriage."
- Mercury is the lagna lord in the 5th house (Capricorn), together with the 5th lord Saturn — a Raja Yoga in the 5th.
- Venus is in Cancer. Capricorn is the 7th from Venus.
"Lagna lord and 5th lord together in the 7th from Venus, so he can give marriage."
"So it does basically add up." The Navamsa lagna is accepted.
D4 — Settling Abroad
Event: first came to the US, January 26, 1997. Dasha (D4 Vimshottari): Jupiter–Rahu.
D4 lagna is Libra. The badhaka sign is Leo.
How Jupiter–Rahu explains it
- Jupiter is in the 2nd house with the badhaka lord Sun.
- Rahu is in the badhaka sign, Leo. Rahu is also a significator of going abroad.
- Mercury is both the 9th lord and the 12th lord, exalted in the 12th house. The link of 9th and 12th lords shows fortune away from home.
Would you have predicted it?
PVNR asks the class what they would have expected without knowing the answer. A student: Jupiter would not have been his candidate — he is the 3rd and 6th lord.
- Saturn is the yogakaraka in the 12th house. He gives excellent 12th-house results.
- Mercury is the 12th lord exalted in the 12th. But Mercury dasha comes very late.
- So Saturn–Saturn or Saturn–Mercury were the natural candidates.
With the second ayanamsa the same event falls in Saturn–Saturn, which "makes excellent sense".
"Any planet who is exalted, or in own sign, or a yogakaraka — any auspicious planet in the 9th or 12th houses can give that result."
Jupiter–Rahu can be explained after the fact. He does not pretend it would have been predicted.
Will she stay abroad?
- "The powerful 12th house does show that this person may settle abroad."
- On hearing that they went back and returned within months: a long stay is what the chart shows. A year here, ten years away and then back would not add up.
- Asked at the end of the class: Saturn dasha has been running in D4 for a while. After it comes Mercury, the 9th and 12th lord in the 12th.
"I don't really see her going back to India and settling down in India soon. Whether she finds a job or not, whether she is frustrated or not, she will end up being here."
D7 — Children
D7 lagna is Aquarius. Venus, the yogakaraka for Aquarius, is in the 5th house, Gemini.
With the class ayanamsa: Ketu–Mercury and Venus–Moon
The D7 Vimshottari gives Ketu–Mercury for the daughter (May 1998) and Venus–Moon for the son (April 2004).
- First child is seen from the 5th house, Gemini. Its lord Mercury shows that child. He is exalted — which can show a boy — but he is in Virgo, a female sign. So a girl.
- Second child is seen from the 3rd from the 5th: Leo. Saturn is there. Leo's lord Sun is in Pisces, so Pisces is the lagna for the second child.
- From Pisces, the lagna lord Jupiter is exalted in the 5th house (Cancer) with the 5th lord Moon. Moon or Jupiter can give this child.
- Venus has nothing to do with either child in particular. But he is the yogakaraka in the 5th house — "a well-placed and important planet in the chart", so his dasha is auspicious and childbirth can occur in it.
What does not fit: Ketu as the dasha lord for the first child.
- From Mercury, Ketu is in the 9th — but as the 3rd lord. No significance.
"Can you come up with a decent logic why Ketu should give the child? Venus can give, being the yogakaraka in the Saptamsa. Mercury can give, being the planet showing the child. But why Ketu?"
With the second ayanamsa: Venus for both
Both children fall in Venus dasha: Venus–Venus for the daughter and Venus–Jupiter for the son.
- Venus–Venus: he is in the 5th house, so he can give.
- Venus–Jupiter: the second child's lagna is Pisces; its lord Jupiter is exalted in the 5th from it. "So he can definitely give the child."
"If your yogakaraka is in the 5th house, or the 5th lord is in the 5th house, or an exalted planet is in the 5th house, he will give very auspicious results related to the 5th house. So in the Venus dasha both the children were born."
"The antardasha running at the time of each child perfectly explains that particular child."
Why the lagna is Aquarius, not Pisces
Two minutes later the D7 lagna is Pisces.
- From Pisces, Venus is the 3rd and 8th lord. Such a planet giving both children is not likely.
- Mercury giving the first child does not make sense from Pisces either.
"All the things that we have seen suggest that lagna is actually Aquarius."
D24 — Education and the CPA Exam
Read from the corrected D24 of Part 2. Lagna Capricorn.
How strong is the chart?
"My basic rule is, first of all, is this a powerful chart or a weak chart?" A finished bachelor's degree is not a major event. Expect an average Siddhamsa with one good dasha in it.
- Lagna lord Saturn is in the 5th with the 4th lord Mars. Both are natural malefics and not friends. "Not too bad."
- Yogakaraka Venus is in the 4th house of education. But the 8th lord Sun is there too. The 4th is a little weak.
- The luminaries matter in any chart. Sun is fine. Moon is debilitated and with the nodes.
"This is not a terrible chart, but this is not really like a great intellectual chart either. This is an average chart."
B.Com, 1995 — Venus dasha
- She finished in 1995, probably May–June, in Venus–Venus. Most of the degree fell in Venus dasha.
- Venus is the 5th lord and yogakaraka in the 4th house. Getting a degree in his period makes sense.
- Venus is with the 8th lord Sun and combust by the exalted Sun. That can also show that she did not study further afterwards.
The D24 lagna is confirmed.
The two CPA failures — Venus–Mercury
Both attempts, August 2008 and October 2010, fell in Venus–Mercury. "In Venus–Mercury there are some setbacks relating to her education."
The period running in 2012 — Venus–Ketu
"From the dasha lord, the antardasha lord's position is very important."
- From Venus, Ketu is in the 8th house.
- From lagna, Ketu is the 11th lord — but for Capricorn the 11th lord is also the badhaka lord.
- Ketu is with the debilitated Moon. Moon is the 7th lord, and the 7th is the house of desire.
"If the 7th lord is weak and afflicted, it shows strong desires that are unfulfilled, and some frustration."
- In any chart, a debilitated Moon owning the 7th very likely shows frustrated desire in that area of life. Here the area is education.
- Rahu and Ketu are the ones afflicting Moon. "During Rahu and Ketu periods, it's unlikely that there will be any happiness."
- The one thing in Ketu's favour: 11th lord in the 11th, aspecting the 5th by graha drishti. Some recognition is possible.
What comes next, and the advice
- After Venus comes Sun dasha. Sun is the 8th lord in the 4th. "He doesn't really show education."
- So the timing for going back to school for a new degree is not favourable.
- Saturn is the lagna lord in the 5th house. His antardasha comes around 2015. That is the window: 2014–2016.
The fellow student explains that the old course credits have lapsed. She must retake the formal courses — about two years — before she can sit the exam.
"Don't really plan any new education, like joining a new course. Just go for the CPA exam maybe once more."
- Take it easy this year. Start the courses next year (2013). Aim to finish in the 2015 time frame.
- "I don't really see any point in going to college and doing anything else. Whatever she failed twice already, just try to finish that off."
