Example Chart — Woman (1973): D4 Gemini Char Dasha = Saturn(12L)+Rahu(12L) in Sign = Going Abroad; D9 Saturn+Rahu = 7th House Lords; Same Planets = D4 Foreign + D9 Marriage = Went Abroad FOR Marriage. D4×D9 Sub-Divisional = Blessings in Residence Area. KEY: Positive Events Require Functional Benefic; Papa Graha Spoils Houses They Touch; Marriage Requires Shubha Graha Activation

The 7th house of the caturthāṁśa can mean travel because of marriage, but only a link with the 7th of the navāṁśa lets one say so. The example is a woman who married on 24 January 1999 and was in the US within a week. In her D-4 the chara daśā is Gemini, holding the 12th lords Saturn and Rāhu and aspected from Sagittarius by the 9th lords Mars and Ketu; the D-4 Viṁśottarī is Saturn–Mars. In her D-9 the same planets are the 7th lords (Saturn, Rāhu) and the occupants of the 7th (yogakāraka Mars with Ketu): she went abroad because of marriage. The class then introduces D-4/D-9, the navāṁśa of the caturthāṁśa — blessings in the area of residence — where the navāṁśas of Saturn and Mars both aspect the 12th of the D-4 and flank the daśā sign; the teacher marks this as research, not Parāśara. The page closes with the rules of the class: śubha graha for a śubha event, pāpa grahas ruin the houses they touch, and a functional malefic in the D-4 gives visits, not settlement.

Key principle

The same planets who show the 12th house in the Chaturthamsa are having a link with the 7th house in the Navamsa. So when you see such a link, it is likely that the person will go abroad for the purpose of marriage or because of marriage.

Example chart — woman who went abroad on marriage (1973)
Jul 26, 1973 · 9:48:10 PM IST · India
D-4 (Pisces lagna): Saturn in Gemini, the chara daśā sign of 1999, and Mars opposite in Sagittarius — 12th lord and 9th lord in samasaptaka. D-9 (Leo lagna): the 7th is Aquarius, ruled by Saturn and Rāhu. The class used Sūrya Siddhānta positions, where Rāhu is with Saturn and Ketu with Mars in the D-4, and Mars and Ketu are in Aquarius in the D-9. The chart cast here differs: the nodes fall in Pisces and Virgo in the D-4, and in the D-9 Mars is in Pisces and Ketu in Capricorn.

Example Chart — a Woman Who Went Abroad on Marriage (1973)

  • Birth: 26 July 1973, 9:48:10 PM IST (5h30m east of GMT), India. Female.
  • Events: married 24 January 1999. Within a week — by about 1 February — she had her dependent visa and came to the US.
  • Her going abroad is because of marriage. So there must be a link between the 7th in the navāṁśa and the 9th or 12th in the caturthāṁśa. Otherwise the chart does not make sense.

D-4 chara daśā: Gemini

Pisces rises in the D-4. In the class chart Saturn and Rāhu are in Gemini and Mars and Ketu in Sagittarius. (A modern ephemeris keeps Saturn in Gemini and Mars in Sagittarius but places the nodes one quarter earlier, in Pisces and Virgo.)

  • The chara daśā at the end of January 1999 is Gemini.
  • Gemini holds Saturn and Rāhu, the two lords of Aquarius — the 12th lords.
  • Mars and Ketu, the two lords of Scorpio — the 9th lords — aspect Gemini from Sagittarius.
  • 9th lords and 12th lords in samasaptaka, with Rāhu, the kāraka, among them.
  • Gemini as lagna: its 9th is Aquarius, so the 9th lord is in lagna. That way too going abroad makes sense.

"This is a clear case. This caturthāṁśa, if you see, you can say this person settles down abroad. This is not a chart of staying in the motherland."

D-4 Viṁśottarī: Saturn–Mars

  • Around 1 February 1999 the D-4 Viṁśottarī is Saturn daśā, Mars antardaśā.
  • Saturn is the 12th lord, Mars the 9th lord. They are in samasaptaka, and Rāhu–Ketu are on the same axis.

"Saturn–Mars taking the person abroad is a very straight case."

The D-4 ↔ D-9 Link — Abroad Because of Marriage

Now the navāṁśa of the same chart. Leo rises.

  • In the class chart Mars and Ketu are in the 7th house (Aquarius). Mars is the yogakāraka for Leo. Yogakāraka in the 7th: a good marriage, luck in getting married.
  • The 7th lords are Saturn and Rāhu.

"The same planets who show the 12th house in the caturthāṁśa, are with the 9th lords and having a yoga, are having a link with the 7th house in the navāṁśa. So when you see such a link, it is likely that the person will go abroad for the purpose of marriage or because of marriage."

  • In D-4: Saturn + Rāhu = 12th lords, Mars + Ketu = 9th lords, the two pairs opposite each other.
  • In D-9: Saturn + Rāhu = 7th lords, Mars + Ketu = occupants of the 7th.
  • The same four planets carry the foreign residence in one chart and the marriage in the other.

"If you know anybody else who just came abroad because of marriage, see some link. There has to be some link like this."

(With a modern ephemeris Mars falls in the last navāṁśa of Pisces and Ketu in Capricorn, so the 7th house is empty in the chart cast on this page. Saturn and Rāhu remain the 7th lords.)

The D-4/D-9 Sub-Division — Navāṁśa of the Caturthāṁśa

An aṁśa of an aṁśa: a varga found inside a varga.

  • Tradition already uses three: dvādaśāṁśa of dvādaśāṁśa (D-144), navāṁśa of dvādaśāṁśa (D-108), navāṁśa of navāṁśa (D-81). This is an extension.
  • Take the caturthāṁśa as the rāśi chart and divide it again.
  • Its triṁśāṁśa shows weaknesses and problems in that area of life — only in that area.
  • Its navāṁśa shows blessings in that area. D-4/D-9 = blessings in the area of residence.
  • The lagna of such a chart can never be trusted. Use only the planets.

In this chart

The two planets that gave the foreign residence are Saturn and Mars (the D-4 Viṁśottarī lords).

  • In D-4/D-9 Saturn is in Taurus and Mars is in Cancer.
  • Transpose these navāṁśa positions onto the caturthāṁśa. Do the two planets share an influence on any sign? On two.
  • Aquarius: Saturn aspects it by his 10th aspect, Mars by his 8th. Both are full aspects. In D-4/D-9 itself its house is unknown, but in the caturthāṁśa Aquarius is the 12th house. The 12th of the D-4 is aspected by the navāṁśas of both key planets.
  • Gemini, the chara daśā sign: Taurus and Cancer flank it. The daśā sign has a kartari from the navāṁśas of the two planets.
  • By the same logic, a kartari on a daśā sign from the triṁśāṁśas of two bad planets would mean trouble in that period.

Status

"This is open for research. This is not something where we have classical principles given by Parashara. But because navāṁśa and triṁśāṁśa have an extra importance in tradition, we can apply them to divisional charts, not just to rāśi… The limited work I have done has shown some interesting results."

  • How to use it: take the important planets of a divisional chart — say the two that form a rāja yoga in it. In the navāṁśa of that division, are they together? Do they have a common influence on a sign?
  • A student checks: the original navāṁśa? No — the navāṁśa of the division of interest.

Rules From This Class

Śubha graha for a śubha event

  • Pāpa grahas give pāpa results. A good event needs a śubha graha — a functional benefic.
  • Whichever house a pāpa graha occupies or aspects, he ruins. Whichever house a śubha graha occupies or aspects, he promotes.
  • Marriage: a functional benefic associated with the 7th house, the 7th lord, Upapada or the 7th from Upapada.
  • Residence (D-4): only a functional benefic gives stable residence. A functional malefic who links the foreign houses gives travel and short stays, not settlement.

Who delivers a yoga

  • A neutral planet can give a major good event if he is in a good yoga with benefics.
  • When several good planets form a yoga in one sign, and their dispositor is himself a functional benefic in a friendly sign, the dispositor's antardaśā can deliver it — ahead of a planet inside the yoga.

Marriage from a chara daśā sign (D-9)

  1. The sign itself: the 7th house, the sign holding the 7th lord, or a sign the 7th lord aspects.
  2. The sign as lagna: lagna lord, yogakāraka and 7th lord well placed together.
  3. Transit: lagna lord or 7th lord (reckoned from the daśā sign) in the daśā sign or its 7th, or strong in own, exaltation or mūlatrikoṇa sign.
