Example Chart — D9 Marriage Aug 1998: Moon MD + Jupiter AD = Moon-Mars-Sun Raj Yoga in 9H; Key Rule: Dispositor (Jupiter=Owner of Sagittarius) is Best AD to Deliver Raj Yoga When Benefic+Strong; Jupiter Special Aspect on Venus(7L). D4 Libra Char Dasha(7H=Foreign) + Saturn MD(Bhadaka) = Going Abroad; May 2011 Transit (4 Planets in Aries=7th from Libra) = High Probability Window

The cardiologist's marriage on 27 August 1998 came in Moon daśā, Jupiter antardaśā of the navāṁśa Viṁśottarī. Moon is only a neutral 4th lord, but he is in the 9th with lagna lord Mars and 5th lord Sun: two benefics and a neutral make a good yoga. Jupiter gave it rather than the Sun because he is the dispositor of the whole yoga, a functional benefic in a friendly sign, and he aspects the 7th lord Venus with his three-quarter aspect. The class sets this against the old habit of finding a reason for every planet, and returns to Parāśara: a śubha event needs a śubha graha tied to the 7th. The navāṁśa chara daśā was Leo — aspected by the 7th lord, and with lagna lord, yogakāraka and 7th lord together in its 5th — with Sun and Rāhu transiting Leo. In the caturthāṁśa, Saturn daśā links the 7th, 9th, 12th and bādhaka, but as a functional malefic he gives visits, not settlement; Libra chara daśā and the Aries transit of May 2011 time the move, and Saturn in the 10th of both D-4 and D-10 ties it to research.

Key principle

There is a nice Raj yoga in the 9th house, powerful, but Jupiter is the dispositor of all that Raj yoga. So when a lot of good planets are involved in a nice yoga, if the dispositor is also a good planet — he is in a friendly house and he is a functional benefic — he can end up giving the marriage.

Example chart — cardiologist, Aries lagna (1970)
Aug 5, 1970 · 11:03 PM IST · India
D-9 (Aries lagna): Moon, Mars and Sun are in the 9th in Sagittarius, with Saturn. Jupiter is in Scorpio — parivartana with Mars — and his three-quarter graha dṛṣṭi falls on Venus, the 7th lord, in Aquarius. Venus aspects Leo, the chara daśā sign of 1998; from Leo, Sun, Mars and Saturn (lagna lord, yogakāraka, 7th lord) are in the 5th. D-4 (Aries lagna): Saturn, Sun and Mars in the 10th in Capricorn; Jupiter, the 9th and 12th lord, in the 7th in Libra, under Saturn's 10th aspect; Saturn's 3rd aspect on the 12th, Pisces. From Libra, Venus is debilitated in the 12th and Mercury is with Ketu in Scorpio.

Example Chart — a Cardiologist (1970)

A student brings the chart of a medical doctor in India who wants to come to the US as a research scholar and asks whether it is a good move.

  • Birth: 5 August 1970, 11:03 PM IST (5h30m east of GMT), India.
  • Lagna: Aries 1°31′ — the very beginning of Aries. Moon: 28°10′ Leo.
  • Because lagna is in the first degree and a half of Aries, Aries also rises in the navāṁśa, daśāṁśa and caturthāṁśa.
  • Profession: MD, cardiologist. He runs his own clinic and also works in a hospital.
  • Marriage: 27 August 1998.
  • Question (asked in March 2011): going to the US as a research scholar.

The class first checks that the chart explains what is already known — profession and marriage — and only then reads the move abroad.

Marriage in the D-9 Viṁśottarī — Moon Daśā, Jupiter Antardaśā

Marriage: 27 August 1998. The Viṁśottarī daśā of the navāṁśa (reckoned from the Moon) gives Moon mahādaśā, Jupiter antardaśā.

The navāṁśa

  • Lagna Aries. In the 9th house, Sagittarius: Moon (4th lord), Mars (lagna lord), Sun (5th lord) — and Saturn.
  • Mars is in Jupiter's sign and Jupiter is in Scorpio, Mars's sign: Mars–Jupiter parivartana.
  • Venus, the 7th lord, is in Aquarius. Mercury is in Leo. Ketu is in Cancer.

A student's first answer, and why it is not enough

  • A student says the pāka–bhoga falls in the 7th house. Good, but that is true of Jupiter antardaśā in several mahādaśās. The daśā lords themselves must be able to give the event.

Can Moon daśā give marriage?

  • Moon is the 4th lord, a śukla caturthī Moon — waxing but small. He is a neutral planet here, neither too benefic nor too malefic.
  • A neutral planet's daśā gave marriage. One reason can be age: it is a 10-year daśā and no better daśā comes at the right age, and then any daśā can give it. But even so the planet must be a benefic, a yogakāraka, or in a good yoga. Otherwise he would not give marriage.
  • Moon is in such a yoga: in the 9th house of dharma, lagna lord Mars, 4th lord Moon (sukha) and 5th lord Sun (pūrva puṇya) are together, and all three are friends.
  • Navāṁśa longitudes: Moon 13½°, Mars 15°, Sun 21°. Moon and Mars are very close, the Sun not far.
  • Saturn is there too and he is the problem — a functional malefic, and not that far away.
  • Leaving Saturn out: Sun is a great benefic, Mars a good benefic, Moon neutral.

"If two benefics and one neutral planet are giving a yoga, it's a good yoga. So this yoga is powerful enough, so it can give very good events in marital life. And this yoga can be given by any of the three planets."

  • Which planet delivers a yoga's result? The classics have rules — iṣṭa phala, kaṣṭa phala, ṣaḍbala — that have not been studied properly yet. After the switch to Sūrya Siddhānta those balas must be revisited. Left alone for now.

Why Jupiter antardaśā and not the Sun's?

The teacher presses the class. The functional benefics in this chart are few: Sun, Mars and Jupiter.

  • Sun is a bigger functional benefic than Jupiter: he owns only the 5th. Jupiter also owns the 12th. Both are in friendly signs. And the Sun is himself in the rāja yoga.
  • A student objects that the Sun's turn comes too late. No: Sun antardaśā would come in 2004, at 34. That is not too late to marry.
  • A student gives the answer: Jupiter is the dispositor of all those planets.

"There is a nice Raj yoga in the 9th house, powerful, but Jupiter is the dispositor of all that Raj yoga. So when a lot of good planets are involved in a nice yoga, if the dispositor is also a good planet — he is in a friendly house and he is a functional benefic — he can end up giving the marriage."

The 7th-house link

Parāśara's basic rule is that pāpa grahas give pāpa results; for a śubha event a śubha graha must be involved. But what he taught for marriage is more specific: marriage is given by a functional benefic associated with the 7th house — occupying or aspecting the 7th house, the 7th lord, the Upapada or the 7th from Upapada.

  • The parameters are many, but the functional benefics are few, so the test is short.
  • Upapada is left out: it is not yet known how to compute it in this approach.
  • The 7th house is not aspected by the Sun or Jupiter.
  • The 7th lord Venus is aspected by Jupiter with his three-quarter aspect (graha dṛṣṭi: Aquarius is the 4th from Scorpio).
  • So Jupiter has some link to the 7th lord. Once Upapada can be found, Jupiter will probably show a stronger link there.

"Whatever we are doing now is the tip of the iceberg. We are still seeing something consistent with it."

How it used to be done — and why that explains nothing

With the old methods almost every planet in this navāṁśa qualifies:

  • Ketu: secondary kāraka for marriage, in fruitful Cancer.
  • Venus: 7th lord and kāraka.
  • Sun: 7th lord from Venus.
  • Mercury: in the 7th from Venus.
  • Mars: lagna lord. Sun and Moon: with him.
  • Saturn: dispositor of Venus, and aspecting him.
  • Jupiter: 9th lord, and marriage is a matter of dharma.

"We know who gave marriage, so we basically explain only that and highlight those points. But the fact of the matter is, any of them really could have given marriage based on the kind of rules we were using."

The method now is the basics of Parāśara:

  • Saturn: functional malefic. Placed in a bad house he would have been good. In the 9th he is a problematic planet.
  • Sun, 5th lord in the 9th: excellent. Moon, 4th lord in the 9th: excellent.
  • Śubha grahas give good events, pāpa grahas give bad events.
  • Whichever house a pāpa graha occupies or aspects, he ruins. Whichever house a śubha graha occupies or aspects, he promotes.

Marriage in the D-9 Chara Daśā — Leo Daśā

In August 1998 the chara daśā of the navāṁśa is Leo (with Saturn and Mars taken as the stronger co-lords of Aquarius and Scorpio).

Which signs are candidates

Before taking the daśā sign as lagna, look at the sign itself: who occupies it, who aspects it, how is its lord, which house is it.

  • Libra — the 7th house. The obvious first guess.
  • Aquarius — the sign holding the 7th lord Venus.
  • Signs aspected by Venus. Venus aspects Leo (the 7th from Aquarius, by graha dṛṣṭi). So Leo can give marriage.

Leo as lagna

  • From Leo: lagna lord Sun, yogakāraka Mars and 7th lord Saturn are together in the 5th (Sagittarius), the house of pūrva puṇya.
  • A very powerful combination. This too makes Leo a sign that can give marriage.

Transit

The event comes when transits agree: the 7th lord in the 7th or in lagna, the lagna lord in the 7th, or lagna lord or 7th lord strong in own sign, exaltation or mūlatrikoṇa.

  • In August 1998 Sun and Rāhu were transiting Leo, the daśā sign.
  • From Leo, Sun is lagna lord and Rāhu a 7th lord (co-lord of Aquarius). Lagna lord and 7th lord together in lagna.
  • Jupiter was in Pisces.

"It's not just the transit. The daśā is interpreted not just based on transit. There has to be something showing there."

A student's question: do the transits of the daśā lords matter?

Since Moon and Jupiter gave the event, should the transits of Moon and Jupiter be seen?

  • It makes sense, but the teacher knows no consistent rules. He has seen interesting things, nothing consistent. A good area for research.
  • The daśā lord's transit is supposed to be important. But the daśā lord here, the Moon, moves very fast. Jupiter's transit should be of interest.
  • From where? There must be valid principles that take the daśā lord's natal position — or his graha āruḍha, the manifestation of the graha — in the divisional chart of interest as the reference, and see transits from there. They remain to be unearthed.

Going Abroad in the Caturthāṁśa — Saturn Daśā and Libra Chara Daśā

The houses for going abroad: 7th, 9th, 12th and the bādhaka. Not the 4th.

In the D-4, Aries rises. Saturn (21° Capricorn), Sun and Mars are in the 10th. Jupiter (26° Libra) is in the 7th. Venus is in Virgo, Mercury and Ketu in Scorpio.

(The D-4 Viṁśottarī is computed with the year of 360 tithis. Jupiter daśā is over; Saturn daśā is running.)

Saturn daśā — can he take the native abroad?

  • Saturn is the 11th lord, and for Aries the 11th is the bādhaka. He is the bādhaka lord.
  • By his 3rd aspect from Capricorn he aspects Pisces, the 12th house.
  • By his 10th aspect he aspects Libra, the 7th house.
  • In Libra sits Jupiter, lord of the 9th and 12th. Saturn at 21° and Jupiter at 26° — the 10th aspect is exact within 5°.
  • Saturn links all four factors: 7th, 9th, 12th and bādhaka.

Why he leaves — and why he will not settle

  • Lagna lord Mars and 5th lord Sun are with Saturn, in an inimical sign. The 5th shows patriotism; the lagna–5th yoga shows being in the motherland.
  • Saturn is their dispositor and their enemy: a malefic afflicting two benefics. For staying in his own country, Saturn is the problem. He can make the person go away.
  • But Saturn is a functional malefic.

"Unless he is a functional benefic, he can't give stable residence. This is the chart of residence. Functional benefics are auspicious. He is an inauspicious planet. So during his daśā, the residence will be unstable."

  • When someone packs his bags, goes to a faraway country and settles to a good life, the planet giving the move has to be a benefic. Saturn is unlikely to give that.
  • In Saturn daśā he will travel a lot and move around. The foreign trips will be short or medium range, not settling down. Very likely several countries, not just the US.
  • A student asks whether the move should even be recommended when a malefic is giving it. The teacher's advice: think of visiting abroad, staying for some time and going back — not of settling.

Libra chara daśā (from August 2008)

"A great candidate for taking abroad." Two readings, in this order.

First, the sign in the natal D-4 — do not take it as lagna to start with:

  • Libra is the 7th house.
  • It is occupied by Jupiter, the 9th and 12th lord.
  • It is aspected by Saturn, the bādhaka lord (his 10th graha dṛṣṭi).

Then, Libra as lagna:

  • Lagna lord Venus is in the 12th, debilitated: leaving the place, going somewhere else.
  • Mercury, the 9th and 12th lord from Libra, is with Ketu and aspected by Rāhu, the kāraka. He is in a jala rāśi, and jala rāśis are conducive.

When — the transit

The class is in mid-March 2011.

  • Jupiter is the key planet: 9th and 12th lord in the natal D-4. He is in Pisces now. When he enters Aries he is in the 7th from the daśā sign — and natally too he is in the 7th from lagna. From then, about a year has a very good chance.
  • Saturn is transiting the 12th from the daśā sign (Virgo), and he is the natal bādhaka lord. Saturn in the 12th with Jupiter in the 7th from the daśā sign is a very good combination.
  • A student points out that around 14 May 2011 Mars, Venus, Sun and Jupiter are all in Aries, the 7th from Libra. Jupiter moves in May, not June as the teacher first thought.
  • From Libra: Mars is the 7th lord, Mercury the 9th lord, Venus the lagna lord, Sun the bādhaka lord. All of them conjoin in that house.

"That is a very interesting transit… May has a very good chance."

  • The student then says the native is in fact coming to the US in May.
  • Verdict: a good move for him. He may travel a lot and go back and forth for the next few years.

Why the move is about his career

  • Saturn is the 10th lord in the 10th house in the D-4 — and again the 10th lord in the 10th in the D-10.
  • Sun and Mars, who are with Saturn in the D-4, are the 6th-house planets of the D-10 that show the surgery. (A student notes the two Sun–Mars pairs are in mutual trines: Capricorn in D-4, Virgo in D-10.)
  • So going abroad is tied to his work. And since Saturn in the D-10 shows research, it is tied to research. Through the foreign residence, Saturn's influence is coming into the life.

"If a planet is in the 10th house in the chart, very strongly, whatever changes in residence happen due to that planet are likely to be due to something relating to career."

  • The 10th house is many things, career among them. So say "maybe a career link", then go to the D-10 and see what that planet shows there and whether planets or signs correlate.
  • The same holds for other houses of the caturthāṁśa: the 3rd shows the initiative in going abroad; the 10th shows work in relation to it.

Is he asking for trouble?

  • A student: he is giving up a running practice to be a research scholar. Another: Jupiter is also the 12th lord — that may show a compromise.
  • The teacher: you never know. He may give something up for a while, and it may help his career later. When he goes back after a couple of years his standing may improve.

The 7th house of D-4 and marriage

  • The 7th in the caturthāṁśa means long travel. It can also mean travel because of marriage — someone marries and moves to a faraway country.
  • For that, the more important factor is a link with the 7th house of the navāṁśa. With that link it can be said with more confidence. The next chart is the example.
