Example Chart (1966, Pisces Lagna): Venus(3L+8L)=Functional Malefic Dasha+Dispositor of Jupiter(1L)=Health Difficulties; D30: Saturn-Saturn=1L in 6H+Parivartana(1L-6L Exchange)=DURYOGA Not Raj Yoga; Kapha Dominant=Moon Vargottama Cancer; Kapha Diet: Trikatu+Millet+Spicy+No Dairy. Vargottama=Same Sign Rasi+Navamsa. Parivartana Duryoga Rule: Kendra-Dusthana Exchange=Problems

A health reading of a Pisces-lagna man (1966) with diabetes and weakness. The Rasi chart shows average health: lagna lord Jupiter is retrograde in Venus's sign, a great enemy's sign, and Mars, Saturn, Gulika and Mandi afflict the 12th, but Saturn is in his own sign and Rahu is 20° from Jupiter. The trouble is the dasha: Venus is the 3rd and 8th lord and the dispositor ("landlord") of the lagna lord, with the 6th lord Sun and bādhaka lord Mercury 12° away. In D30 (Capricorn lagna) the lagna lord Saturn is in the 6th and exchanges signs with the 6th lord Mercury, who sits in the lagna with the 8th lord Sun — a Duryoga, not a Raj Yoga, due in Saturn–Mercury. The page then covers his Kapha constitution with Pitta on the Moon, the Kapha diet (trikatu, millet, brown rice, heating oils), Sita Rama as the remedy, and the Vargottama Moon in Cancer.

Key principle

If Kendra and Trikona lord exchange, that's a Raj Yoga. But if a Kendra or Trikona lord exchanges with a Dusthana lord, like 6th, 8th, 12th, it is a Duryoga. So here the Saturn and Mercury exchange is a Duryoga.

Example Chart

Example chart — journalist turned farmer (Pisces lagna, 1966)
Feb 4, 1966 · 10:00:10 AM IST · Andhra Pradesh, India. The class software has the nodes about 1° further on and Venus just under 7°30′ Capricorn, so the site differs in D4 (Venus, Ketu) and D12 (Ketu).
Rasi: Pisces lagna. Jupiter (lagna lord) in Taurus in the 3rd with Rahu, 20° apart. Mars and Saturn in Aquarius in the 12th. Venus (3rd and 8th lord, dasha lord) at 7° Capricorn in the 11th with Sun and Mercury at 20–21°; all three aspect the Moon at 0° Cancer in the 5th, who is Vargottama (Cancer in D9). D30: Capricorn lagna, Saturn in Gemini in the 6th, Mercury (6th lord) and Sun (8th lord) in the lagna — the 1st–6th lord exchange.

Background, as the student gives it:

  • Taught for some time, then moved into journalism: reporter and editor at a newspaper.
  • Wrote well-received articles and editorials and became popular. Did political writing and went towards exposing people.
  • Had issues with the management and lost the job. With no other choice he went back to his home town and now works in the fields.
  • This happened at the end of Ketu dasha and the start of Venus dasha. The student: "Ketu was a very, very bad period for him."
  • His father is an MLA. People visit him every day with their problems and are pushing him towards local politics. He himself is not interested.
  • Health: diabetes, feels weak, no strength for the early-morning farm work. Age about 46.

Questions: mainly health, second finances, third career (should he enter politics?).

A note on the site's chart: the lagnas and almost every placement used in class are reproduced. The teacher's software puts the nodes about a degree further on (Rahu near 8½° Taurus, against 7°28' here) and Venus just under 7°30' Capricorn (7°37' here). Both sit on a division border, so three placements differ on the site: in D4 the class has Venus in Capricorn (2nd house) and Ketu in Aquarius (3rd, with Jupiter), the site shows Venus in Aries and Ketu in Scorpio; in D12 the class has Ketu in Aquarius, the site shows Capricorn. The notes follow the class.

Rasi Chart — Health Analysis

Method: for health, first the Rasi chart with Vimshottari, then Trimsamsa.

Is it a healthy chart overall?

  • Lagna lord Jupiter is in Taurus (3rd house) with Rahu, the 12th lord (co-lord of Aquarius). There are about 20° between them, so the affliction is not a big problem.
  • Jupiter is retrograde in Venus's sign — not just an inimical sign but an adhi-śatru rāśi (sign of a great enemy). The lagna lord is not well placed.
  • Nobody aspects the lagna.
  • 12th house (Aquarius) is strong and afflicted: Mars and Saturn, about 12° apart, with Gulika and Mandi also there. The 12th is the house of hospitalisation and losses; malefics there give some problems. But Saturn is the 12th lord in his own sign, so it is not that bad.

Verdict on the chart: average health. Not perfect, but no serious problems overall in life.

The dasha: Venus

Venus dasha is running, and Venus is a bad planet for health here:

  • Venus is the 3rd and 8th lord — a functional malefic for Pisces lagna. The 8th is the house of chronic illness.
  • Venus is the dispositor of Jupiter: the planet in whose sign the lagna lord is badly placed. "Lagna lord, if he is well placed, he protects health. If he is badly placed, he can give some trouble." Venus holds the key to that.
  • Venus is in the 11th house (Capricorn) with the Sun and Mercury. The Sun is the 6th lord — illness that comes from time to time and goes. Mercury is the 7th lord and so the bādhaka lord for a dual lagna — problems that are difficult to diagnose.
  • But the Sun (21½°) and Mercury (20°) are about 12° away from Venus (7°). Had they been closer, the problem would have been more serious. Venus is mostly on his own.
  • The 11th is the Hara sthāna — not great for health either.

"This is a chart of somebody who has average health. Not perfect health, but definitely not serious problems overall in life. But the current period that he is running right now is one of the worst."

D30 Trimsamsa — Health

D30 lagna: Capricorn
Dasha read from D30: Saturn–Saturn

  • Saturn, the D30 lagna lord, is in the 6th house (Gemini): problems coming and going.
  • The 6th lord Mercury and the 8th lord Sun are in the lagna. The planets that give health problems sit in the lagna — not auspicious.
  • One may say lagna lord in the 6th is a good placement. But Saturn is in Mercury's sign and Mercury is in Saturn's sign: a parivartana between the 1st and 6th lords.
  • The 8th lord Sun, sitting with Mercury, also influences this exchange.

Rule — not every exchange is a Raj Yoga:

"If Kendra and Trikona lord exchange, that's a Raj Yoga. But if a Kendra or Trikona lord exchanges with a Dusthana lord, like 6th, 8th, 12th, it is a Duryoga. So here the Saturn and Mercury exchange is a Duryoga."

Timing:

  • Sun, Mercury and Saturn dashas (as read in D30) are not great: the Duryoga gives its results in them.
  • Sun and Mercury are the same two planets that are with Venus in the Rasi chart, and Venus dasha is running there.
  • Right now Saturn–Saturn is not that bad, and in the Rasi chart Venus–Jupiter has only just started, so the 8th-lord results have not fully set in. He has concerns, not serious problems: diabetes and weakness.
  • The period of more concern is Saturn–Mercury (or Mercury–Saturn): that is when the exchange between the lagna lord and the 6th lord is triggered.

Ayurvedic Constitution — Kapha Dominant

The body: lagna

  • Lagna lord Jupiter is in a Venusian sign. Jupiter and Venus are both Kapha planets. Kapha is dominant.
  • Rahu can show Vata, or āma — toxins accumulated in the body. But Rahu is far from Jupiter, so this is not a major concern.
  • The running dasha shows the vikṛti (the current imbalance). A Vata person running the dasha of an afflicting Kapha planet can accumulate Kapha, and such disease is hard to treat: treating the dosha that has shifted throws the original one out of balance. Here there is no such conflict — the dasha is of Venus, a Kapha planet. He is a Kapha person and Kapha is dominating now.
  • The student confirms: he looks like a proper Kapha person, yet he works hard.

"Kapha basically means your anabolism is stronger than your catabolism, so you tend to accumulate body mass. If they don't work, they can be fat. If they work hard, they will be of reasonable build, but they are unlikely to be thin."

The mind: Moon

  • He is bald. That is unusual for Kapha people and points to a Pitta influence somewhere. The other factor to check after the lagna is the Moon.
  • Moon is at 0°36' Cancer, in his own sign. He was born on Śukla Caturdaśī. A full Moon is Kapha, an Amāvāsya Moon is Vata, and in between it is proportional — so this Moon is almost fully Kapha. (Kapha because he is nearly full, not because he is in Cancer.)
  • Venus, Sun and Mercury aspect the Moon by graha dṛṣṭi from Capricorn. Venus is Kapha. Sun is Pitta. Mercury is tridosha and behaves like the planet he is with: he is at 20°, the Sun at 21½°, Venus at 7° — closer to the Sun, so he acts as a Pitta planet.
  • So Mercury, the mental planet, and the Sun, the planet of power, put Pitta on the mind.

"Instead of here, there is fire accumulated in the head, in the brain, which is the seat of the mind."

  • Fire in the physical body would mean strong digestion and tissue fires, and a muscular, athletic build. That is not the case here: on the lagna the influence is Kapha.
  • Fire on the mind means aggression, stress, irritation, frustration — and baldness is possible. Whatever influences the mind also leaves its footprint on the body, so there is a secondary Pitta influence.
  • Conclusion: by both Moon and lagna he is mainly Kapha. His food should follow the Kapha guidelines.

Kapha Diet

  • Dairy: not too much milk, ghee or butter. Yogurt is quite bad for him. If he must, take it diluted as buttermilk with pepper, chilli or sliced ginger. If he eats yogurt with rice, put pickle in it so that the spice balances the Kapha-increasing quality.
  • Spice: spicy food instead of bland. His metabolism is not strong; spice raises it. Ginger is very good for him.
  • Trikatu rasāyana ("thrice pungent"): ginger, black pepper and long pepper powdered and mixed with honey, every day with the meal. If he cannot do that, put ginger and black pepper in the food.
  • Fats: heating fats, not cooling ones. Sesame oil is good; mustard oil is the one recommended for Kapha because it is even more heating. Olive oil, coconut oil and ghee are cooling — they suit a person with strong Pitta.
  • Sweets: they increase Kapha. Not too many.
  • Rice and diabetes: it is not only sweets that give diabetes. White rice eaten every day is nothing but carbohydrate. Brown rice keeps the outer shell, digests slower and releases sugar into the blood slower. "Just changing from white rice to brown rice will make a lot of difference."
  • Wheat: okay, but not recommended as a rule. Rice is the tridoshic grain, suitable for all doshas provided it is brown; wheat suits some doshas and not others.
  • Millet (pearl millet — bajri/bajra in Hindi, sajjalu in Telugu): the best grain for him. His system has too much of the watery element and needs drying; millets are heating and drying. Eaten as roti or cooked like rice. Ragi is a different grain and is also okay.

Remedy — Dispositor, Sita Rama, Vargottama Moon

The teacher puts precautions first: prayers will help, but the better remedy is the right food and Ayurveda.

Which planet to propitiate

  • Lagna is Pisces, so praying to Jupiter or a deity of Jupiter is always good for health. But that is the generic, lifelong remedy.
  • For the present period it is better to propitiate Venus: he is the dispositor of Jupiter, a functional malefic, and his dasha is running.

Dispositor (asked by a student):

"Dispositor is the planet in whose sign you are. Dispositor is like landlord. Just like your landlord can put some pressure on you and say, unless you do this, I'll evict you — like that, the dispositor has some control over the planet."

Jupiter is in Taurus, so Venus is Jupiter's landlord and has some control over Jupiter's agenda.

Which deity

  • Venus shows Parāśakti, Lakshmi. Propitiating Lakshmi is a good idea.
  • A finer choice: Venus is with Mercury and the Sun. Mercury shows Vishnu. Among Vishnu's avataras the Sun shows Sri Rama. So Mercury + Sun shows Sri Rama, and Venus with them shows his consort Sita Devi. Pray to Sita Rama.
  • If there is a Sita Rama temple locally, help it. He has standing in the place: an unafflicted Vargottama Moon is in the 5th house. Otherwise worship Sita and Rama at home.
  • The same remedy serves the career: Venus is the dasha lord in D10 as well. Any Lakshmi avatara such as Sita, a Sita Rama stotra, or a Lakshmi stotra.

Vargottama Moon

Vargottama (asked by a student):

"Vargottama means in the Rasi chart and the Navamsa chart, the planet occupies the same sign. Then the planet becomes particularly powerful."

  • Moon is at 0°36' Cancer, Punarvasu 4th pada: Cancer in Rasi and Cancer in Navamsa. Own rasi, own navamsa, nobody with him, not much affliction. Very powerful.
  • Any watery lagna except Scorpio — Cancer and Pisces — tends to be sensitive or emotional. Here both the lagna (Pisces) and the Moon (Cancer) are in those signs: a very emotional, very sensitive man.
  • He connects to people and they connect to him. The student confirms: people come to him every day with their problems, which is why they push him towards politics.
  • The teacher's regret: the Moon's dasha is not the one running. "If Moon dasha was running now, I would have predicted he will be a successful leader." The dasha running is Venus — so go to the Dashamsa.
