Example Chart — Career Decision via Annual TP & A9+A10+A4 Material Raja Yoga
An engineer unhappy with his company's management holds an offer that means relocating: change now or stay? The lagna is at 0°06' Taurus, so the birth time is first tested on his marriage and the sex and timing of his children in D7. The decision is then read from the 2004 annual Tithi Pravesha chart. The ruler of the year, Mercury, is 8th and 11th lord in lagna afflicting the 10th lord Sun; in D10 he is lagna and 10th lord in a Raja Yoga with Venus, who is in Marana Karaka Sthana as 2nd and 9th lord — resources and direction from superiors are what suffers. The running Jupiter dasha has the Badhakesha in A10: a change of job. The 2005 chart is checked before advising: a parivartana of the 1st and 7th lords with the Yogakaraka on lagna, and A9, A10 and A4 together — a material Raja Yoga. The deity for the year is taken from Moon and Venus.
Key principle
The conjunction of A9, A10, and A4 is like a material Raja Yoga. A9 is the tangible fortune that you enjoy. A10 is your tangible karma. A4 is your tangible sukha.
Example Charts
Example chart
Question: he is project lead in a startup. The management is doing badly on an important project. He holds an offer that means moving to another state. Take it, stay where he is unhappy, or look locally?
Lagna on the Border
- Lagna is at 0°06' Taurus. Nineteen seconds earlier it is Aries.
"When people like this come to you, you have to be really careful."
-
Known events to test it on: marriage in July 1997, a boy in December 2000, a boy in June 2003. He first worked as a co-op student — a student who works for credit; the class notes give 1994.
-
Check whether both lagnas call for the same dasha. Sometimes Taurus needs one dasha and Aries another, and both charts must be judged with both. Here regular Vimshottari applies either way.
-
So take one dasha and see which lagna the known events fit.
Marriage — July 20, 1997, Rahu–Venus
- In Navamsa (Capricorn lagna) Rahu is with the 7th lord Moon. "Both have the same agenda."
- Venus can give marriage at any time, and he is the dispositor of Rahu and of the 7th lord.
- In Rasi Venus is in the Upapada Lagna (Sagittarius).
- "There is some reasonable chance that Rahu–Venus can give marriage." Not a perfect on-the-dot explanation, but it makes sense.
First Child — December 2000, Rahu–Moon
- D7 lagna is Scorpio, an even sign → count backwards. The 5th counted backwards is Cancer. Lord: Moon.
- Moon is with Rahu in Libra. Rahu shows a male child.
- The lagna of that child carries Rahu and Moon → born in Rahu–Moon. Boy ✓
Second Child — June 2003, as Jupiter's Period Began
- The next child's sign is Taurus. No node stands in the way of this jump.
- Its lord Venus is in Sagittarius, alone.
"See any planets who are in that house, not counting Venus. If there are, they will decide. If there aren't, or if there are equal influences of male and female planets, see what kind of sign it is."
- (For the first child Libra did not matter. Rahu with Moon decided it.)
- Sagittarius is odd → male. Boy ✓
- Sagittarius is the lagna of this child. Who can give him? Venus, who is in it; Jupiter, its lord, who also aspects it; Sun, who aspects it.
- The child came as soon as Jupiter's period started. The class notes give the period as Jupiter–Jupiter.
So Taurus Stands
- Boy and boy fit, the dashas at both births fit, the marriage fits. A student had already tried the end of Aries and got a boy and a girl.
Third Child — Expected at the Time of the Class
- The third child's sign is Pisces. Ketu (in Aries) lies on the way from Taurus.
- When Rahu or Ketu is in the way, the next child comes only after much difficulty — unless the next sign has the protection of Jupiter or Venus.
- Pisces is Jupiter's own sign, and Jupiter in Virgo aspects it by both rasi drishti and graha drishti. "There is full Jupiterian protection."
- Jupiter is also the 5th lord of the D7, in the 11th house of gains. "Jupiter should save."
- The wife is already pregnant. Otherwise there may be some tension; praying to Shiva would make it sure.
- But that is the end: "There is one possibility of jumping over Ketu. In such cases there will not be any further children."
- Sex: Jupiter is a male planet but sits in Virgo, an even sign → likely a girl.
"We don't care about Pisces. If you just go by the house, there is a clear pattern — male, female, male, female. That's not the case. You go by the lord of the sign."
- The sign the lord occupies is the child's lagna. Here Virgo: Jupiter in lagna, Ketu in the 8th, Sun in the 10th with digbala → a spiritual, noble child, good in administrative positions.
- Timing: Jupiter dasha, and by the dates probably Saturn antardasha. Saturn is in a trine from Jupiter and aspects Pisces. "It's not a solid explanation like we saw for the last two children."
The Working Window
- The time can go back at most 19 seconds. Saptamsa and Navamsa allow up to about 10 minutes forward.
- A recorded 3:49 is unlikely to be 4:00. It could be 3:52 or 3:53. Practically: a few seconds back, 3–4 minutes forward.
- The Dasamsa lagna (Capricorn) is the same at the end of Aries and the start of Taurus. The last Dasamsa of an odd sign and the first Dasamsa of the next even sign always coincide — the count runs forward from the odd sign itself and from the 9th of the even sign.
The 2004 Annual Chart — Should He Change Jobs?
Why the Annual TP
"When somebody asks me for an advice and I must give an advice in the next 10 minutes, I just go to the Tithi Pravesha chart. I don't even bother about Vimshottari, because in Vimshottari there are so many layers of interpretation. If you miss some, you may misjudge. But in Tithi Pravesha the vanilla techniques will simply work, because you are talking about a short period."
- The class is in August 2005. His birthday falls in November, so the running year is the 2004 chart.
- Cast for November 17, 2004, 7:14:22 AM. Scorpio lagna.
- Hora lord — ruler of the year — Mercury. He is also the Karana lord. Karana is the active element, for accomplishments, so Mercury is the key planet for work.
Rasi of the Year
- Mercury is 8th and 11th lord, a functional malefic, in lagna. "Undoubtedly bad." A year of anxiety, tension, changes, uncertainty.
- Bad in which area? Mercury afflicts Sun, the 10th lord, in lagna. The 8th lord afflicting the 10th lord → tension over career. Sun could also be father or bosses.
- Read the houses owned, the house occupied and the yogas of the ruler of the year, "the king of the year". That gives the theme of the year.
- A side look at children: in the year's D7 Jupiter is in lagna and the lagna lord Mercury is in the 5th; in Rasi Jupiter is 5th lord in the 11th aspecting the 5th. Happiness from children, and news of a new child is possible.
D10 of the Year — Mercury
D10 lagna is Virgo.
- Mercury is lagna and 10th lord in the 6th house (Aquarius).
- The 6th is a good house for Mercury. His good houses from lagna are 4, 6, 8, 10 and 11 — see the Ashtakavarga definitions for each planet. He shows obstacles to be overcome through the year.
- He is in a Raja Yoga: Venus, the 9th lord, joins him — 9th with 10th lord, 9th with 1st lord. "Yogas of the ruler of the year are very important."
- But Venus in the 6th is in Marana Karaka Sthana.
"Is it good for a planet to be in a yoga with somebody who is dying, who is really irritated at being there? Not really that good."
- Venus is 2nd and 9th lord. What is suffering "almost as if it's dying" this year:
- 9th house — the guidance, direction and protection he gets from superiors.
- 2nd house — the resources they supply him with.
- And the ruler of the year sits with that planet. "The whole kingdom knows about it if the king knows about some problem."
- This is exactly his complaint: irritation at the direction of the company's management.
The Running Dasha — Jupiter
In the D10:
- Jupiter is 4th lord and Badhakesha (7th lord of a dual lagna), in the 2nd house.
- The 7th could be business, but the 6th is much stronger than the 7th here. He gives a strong desire for something better.
- Peace in career is seen from the 4th house of D10. The 4th holds Ketu, the 3rd lord. The 3rd is the 12th from the 4th — loss of sukha. Rahu, the 6th lord, aspects it.
"The 4th house is being hammered by nodes. So there is no sukha."
- The one hope is the 4th lord. Jupiter owns the 4th and has argala on it from the 2nd. He gives some peace.
- As Badhakesha he gives unexpected change, or an inexplicable worry: should I change, should I move, should I do this or that.
- He is in the 2nd, an artha trikona. He aspects the 6th and the 10th by graha drishti, and the 10th lord Mercury by both rasi and graha drishti. A positive influence on all the artha houses.
- Jupiter sits in A10. A10 is the tangible career — the actual title, "project manager at so-and-so company". The Badhakesha in A10 → a change of job in this period.
In the Rasi of the year:
- Jupiter is 5th lord in the 11th, aspecting the 5th, in a Raja Yoga with Venus — a weak one, Jupiter at 17° and Venus at 29°. He is in the Arudha Lagna.
- His image is protected and perhaps raised in Jupiter dasha.
"The chart is showing that during this period there can be a change in job. So your advice is very, very correct advice."
Rahu Dasha — September 10 to October 21
- In D10 Rahu is the 6th lord in the 10th house, in parivartana with Mercury, the ruler of the year, and aspecting the 2nd. Tied to the artha houses — a dasha that matters in career.
- But he is the 6th lord: compromises, adjustments, obstacles to overcome. After a change of job it takes time to adjust.
Mercury and Venus Exchange Results
Mercury and Venus are together in the 6th of D10, so they exchange results. (Rahu's own exchange is ignored here.)
- Mercury dasha, March 30 to May 29 — gave the results of Venus, the planet in Marana Karaka Sthana. He would have felt terrible: "as if his bosses are idiots". He felt it all year; in April and May it was at its peak.
- Venus dasha, from October 21 — gives the results of Mercury, ruler of the year, lagna and 10th lord. Short, but "a superb dasha".
The Reading
- To September 10: auspicious changes, despite some tension.
- September 10 to October 21: tension, obstacles, worries, irritations.
- From October 21: auspicious.
- Advice: change the job.
Badhakesha and Sudden Change
After the closing prayer PVNR adds: the Badhakesha usually brings changes. As the Badhakesha in D4 shows a change of place, the Badhakesha in D10 shows a sudden change in career. The D4 of this year was not examined for the move.
Check the Next Year — 2005 Chart, A9+A10+A4 and the Deity
Always Look One Year Ahead
"Whenever you advise somebody, yes, go ahead and change, you should see how the next year is. Because for all you know, this year may be conducive to change, but next year may hammer him."
- If the next year is worse, say so: you will change anyway, but be careful. He is then prepared and will not ask, "Why didn't you tell me?"
- People come without expectation and leave with a lot of it. If things go wrong they are unhappy with you, "and it is bad karma for you".
The 2005 Annual Chart
Begins December 6, 2005, shortly after 11 AM. Capricorn lagna.
- Ruler of the year: Moon.
- Lagna lord Saturn is in the 7th and 7th lord Moon is in lagna — parivartana of the 1st and 7th lords.
- Venus, the Yogakaraka (5th and 10th lord), joins Moon in lagna.
- 1st, 7th, 5th and 10th lords: "superb Raja Yogas on lagna, given by the ruler of the year as well as the lagna lord". Like the ruler of the year, the lagna lord is a key planet.
- Moon is at 28°, Venus at 1°, Saturn at 17°. Far apart in degrees → moderately strong, not very strong.
A9 + A10 + A4 Together
A9, A10 and A4 all fall in Capricorn, with Moon and Venus.
"The conjunction of A9, A10, and A4 is like a material Raja Yoga. A9 is the tangible fortune that you enjoy. A10 is your tangible karma. A4 is your tangible sukha."
- You may be happy or unhappy inside. Whether people see you as happy is A4.
- Moon and Venus are both planets of happiness, relaxation and enjoyment, and they sit in these three arudha padas.
"He will seem like a very fortunate man with a very good career, having lot of happiness and peace. That is how he will seem to the world during the next year."
- Conclusion: after the change, the new year is very auspicious. The advice is well founded — for one year. "If something goes wrong after that, you are not responsible."
- PVNR turns to the D10 of 2005 but goes back to the Rasi for the arudha point and does not read the D10 in class.
Deity for the Year
If he believes in such things, he should pray at the moment the new year starts — December 6, between 11:00 and 11:30 — at a temple or at home.
- The planets of the yoga are Moon, Venus and Saturn. Moon and Venus show a form of the Divine Mother.
- Venus shows Lakshmi. Moon is the planet of amrita. Moon with Venus can show Amriteshwari — he can be directed to Mata Amritanandamayi — or any form of the Mother, Lakshmi or Parvati.
- If he is a Christian: Mother Mary, with whatever observance they have, on that day at that time.
"Even if he doesn't do it, next year is a good year. If he does it, it will be even better."
- Final word to the native: change the job; expect a couple of months of tension and worry; the next year is very auspicious.
