Example Chart — D10 Career, Bhoga Formula & D16 Vehicles

A Dasamsa worked from rectification to timing. Moving the birth time two minutes changes the D10 lagna from Scorpio to Libra and puts Mercury in the 10th, which explains a software career followed by television production. The 10th lord in the 6th makes a workaholic; papakartari on Mercury from Saturn and Rahu acts like a Maharaja Yoga because both own the 5th; the 7th lord Mars in the 3rd and in the Arudha Lagna gives the image of an entrepreneur; the dikpala amsas show the approach to work. The bhoga formula then times the Mercury daśā: bhoga in the 10th for Mercury–Mercury and Mercury–Jupiter, in the 12th for Mercury–Rahu. D16 is the mental sense of pleasure and vehicles, with the kama trikonas and A3 showing a particular trip, read on PVNR's own chart.

Key principle

The paka, where the antardasha planet is — that house shows where the activities are focused. But the bhoga shows where the results are coming, what is being experienced. Bhoga means experience.

D-10 Career Analysis — The Example Chart

Rectifying the Dasamsa lagna

  • With the time as given (10:50 PM) the Dasamsa lagna is Scorpio.
  • The student had rectified to 10:47 PM. Moving the time 2 minutes 6 seconds back, the Dasamsa lagna becomes Libra.
  • Events used: first job in November 1995 as a software consultant; change of line in December 2001 to producing and directing TV programmes.
  • With Libra lagna, Mercury is in the 10th house. The class accepts the rectification.

The Dasamsa with Libra lagna

  • Lagna Libra. Venus (lagna lord) and Sun in Scorpio, the 2nd.
  • Mars in Sagittarius, the 3rd. Arudha lagna is also in Sagittarius.
  • Jupiter in Capricorn, the 4th, debilitated. He owns the 3rd and the 6th.
  • Ketu in Aquarius, the 5th.
  • Moon (10th lord) in Pisces, the 6th.
  • Saturn in Gemini, the 9th.
  • Mercury (9th and 12th lord) in Cancer, the 10th.
  • Rahu in Leo, the 11th. A7 (Darapada) and A9 are in Leo.

10th lord in the 6th — a workaholic, not "obstacles"

A student reads the Moon in the 6th as obstacles. PVNR does not accept the word.

  • The Moon is in Jupiter's sign. Jupiter is a permanent friend, and by placement a temporary friend too (planets in the three houses on either side are temporary friends; Jupiter in Capricorn is the 11th from the Moon). Permanent friend plus temporary friend = adhimitra. The Moon is in an adhimitra sthana.
  • The lord of one artha trikona placed in another artha trikona, in an adhimitra sthana, does not show bad results.
  • The 6th is the house of overcoming obstacles. If you meet a small obstacle and easily overcome it, and then another, you stop calling them obstacles. What it shows is working hard.
  • 10th lord in the 6th of the Dasamsa = a workaholic. Whatever small problem comes up, the person gets involved and does it himself; he does not tell somebody else to do it. Tom Hanks has a very strong 6th house in the Dasamsa.

Mercury daśā gave the career — 9th lord in the 10th

  • The first job came in Mercury daśā, Mercury antardaśā (November 1995).
  • Mercury is the 9th lord of the Dasamsa placed in the 10th. The 9th is purva punya — the blessing for the good done in past lives. In the Dasamsa it is the blessing as far as career is concerned, not marriage or parents.
  • As long as Mercury daśā runs, the career will be fine, with ups and downs.
  • A student adds that Mercury is also the 12th lord. PVNR agrees: the 12th is loss, or giving up, or giving things.

Papakartari on Mercury that works like a Maharaja Yoga

A student notices that Mercury is hemmed between two malefics: Saturn in Gemini and Rahu in Leo.

  • When a planet is hemmed between two planets, they give results as if they were with that planet. It is as if Saturn and Rahu were with Mercury in Cancer. That affliction is bad.
  • But see what they own. Saturn owns the 4th and the 5th and is the yogakaraka. Rahu owns the 5th (Aquarius). Both are lords of the 5th.
  • They join Mercury, the 9th lord. Parashara says the 5th and 9th lords influencing each other, with a strong lagna lord, is a Maharaja Yoga — "he did not even say Raja Yoga."
  • So the kartari, though called a papakartari, brings results akin to that Maharaja Yoga in her career.
  • They are still malefics. Compare Swami Jayendra Saraswati, whose lagna has papakartari from Saturn and Rahu: in the antardaśās of those two he may have come under the influence of wrong people close to him.
  • For her, in the Rahu antardaśā (running at the time of the class) or the Saturn antardaśā: on the ground it is a good period with gains and a powerful position, but reaching it may involve slightly wrong means or wrong people.
  • Rahu is in the Darapada (A7) — the people you associate with. Throughout her career she may tend to associate with undesirable people, or with outcasts: people who are shunned not for anything bad they do but because they are untraditional. It is more likely in the Rahu antardaśā.

Planets in the dikpala amsas

The deity of the Dasamsa division shows the flavour of the karma.

  • Mercury, Venus and Sun are in Ishana amsa; the Moon is in Ananta amsa. Four planets of the artha trikonas are in Ishana and Ananta amsas.
  • Had the planet in the 10th been Jupiter or Ketu instead of Mercury, she would have been a priest or in the religious line. With Venus, Moon and Mercury she is in television — but the religious line is very favourable, and there will be a streak of religion in her work. If it has not happened yet, it may later: some devotional activity, or, if she writes, writing on religious matters. The student confirms she is about to take up devotional work.
  • Do not read spirituality from the Dasamsa. How religious the person is, whether she does puja, whether she sees God in herself and others — that is seen from the Vimsamsa (D-20), and to some extent the Navamsa, which is your dharma. The Dasamsa is the karma you do in society. Ishana and Ananta amsas strong there mean the work done in society has something to do with religion.
  • Lagna's amsa shows the overall approach of the person in professional matters. Her lagna is in Varuna amsa: patiently handling a lot of people; people management and people interfacing; typically business, dealing with many vendors.

Service or business?

A student says service, because the 6th house has the 10th lord and the 7th is empty. PVNR does not accept that the 6th is stronger.

  • The test being applied: the 6th stronger in the Dasamsa shows service; the 7th stronger shows business.

  • The 7th lord Mars is in the 3rd, another kama trikona. The 7th is the centre of the kama trikona — desire. The 3rd is the house of initiative.

  • Mars is the karaka of the 3rd, placed in the 3rd, and the 3rd falls in a fiery sign with a fiery planet in it. That is fiery determination: when she wants to do something in her career, she will do it.

  • Mars is in the Arudha Lagna (Sagittarius). The arudha lagna of the Dasamsa is how the people who know you through your work see you. Sagittarius: seen as dharmic, righteous. Mars there: seen as a warrior who finishes what he embarks on.

  • So her image is decided by Mars more than by the Moon. People know her as an entrepreneur more than as a workaholic. Mars is the significator of enterprise, definitely so when associated with the 3rd and 7th.

  • "Just because the 6th house has one planet and the 7th house is empty, you can't conclude that the 6th house is stronger than the 7th." That one Mars is enough to lift the kama trikona. The artha trikonas are quite strong and the kama trikonas almost equally strong.

  • The student then says she runs an advertising agency.

The amsa of the business planet shows the approach to business

  • Her Mars is in Brahma amsa. Brahma rules the downward direction: research, digging into details, minute plans. She will not start a business just because she knows some people. She researches, breaks down every detail, makes a clear plan, and then jumps.
  • 7th lord in Agni amsa: transformation, engineering. The person has an idea for a machine or a process and jumps into business on the idea, without working out how to run it.
  • The business planet in Nirriti amsa: an illegal or underground activity that somebody says will not be caught. On the positive side, a weird and untraditional product nobody else would think of.

Bhoga Formula in D-10

The formula

  1. Count from the daśā lord to the antardaśā lord.
  2. Count the same number again from the antardaśā lord. That sign is the bhoga.
  3. Read the house it falls in from the lagna of the divisional chart.

For a deeper level, count from the level above: antardaśā from mahādaśā, pratyantardaśā from antardaśā, sūkṣma from pratyantara, and so on.

Paka and bhoga

"The paka, where the antardasha planet is — that house shows where the activities are focused. But the bhoga shows where the results are coming, what is being experienced. Bhoga means experience."

  • This is why a planet in the 5th house can give terrible results in its antardaśā: the bhoga is somewhere else.
  • The same antardaśā gives different results in different daśās, because the bhoga moves.
  • The formula can be used in every divisional chart and with other daśās as well.

Auspicious bhoga houses in the Dasamsa

  • Lagna, 5th, 9th and the 10th. The Dasamsa is focused on the 10th house; bhoga there brings important developments in career.
  • Bhoga in the 12th is not good: loss, or giving up.

Mercury daśā in the example Dasamsa (Libra lagna; Mercury in Cancer)

AntardaśāCountingBhogaReading
Mercury–MercurySame planetCancer, 10thVery good. The career began (Nov 1995)
Mercury–Venus (1997–2000)Venus is 5th from Mercury; 5th from ScorpioPisces, 6thNot very auspicious. The 6th is a good house here, so no big setbacks: hard work, getting along, no important developments
Mercury–MoonMoon is 9th from Mercury; 9th from PiscesScorpio, 2ndMore resources and more money. Scorpio is the strongest artha trikona in this chart, holds the lagna lord with the Sun, and several important arudhas
Mercury–Rahu (running; Oct 2003 – May 2006)Rahu is 2nd from Mercury; 2nd from LeoVirgo, 12thLoss or giving up
Mercury–Jupiter (next; May 2006 – Aug 2008)Jupiter is 7th from Mercury; 7th from CapricornCancer, 10thVery auspicious. One of the antardaśās that will stand out when she looks back twenty years later

Mercury–Rahu: give something up

  • "If she gives up something in favour of something else, that is good. Because if she doesn't give up, something may be taken away from her."
  • Rahu himself is in the 11th, so she will be working towards gains. He is in A7, which besides associates shows business: the 7th is desire and is intangible, A7 is the desire manifested where people can see it. She will be working to manifest her desires — a business or some visible activity. That is the paka. The bhoga, what she is forced to experience, is the 12th.
  • For contrast, Ketu daśā Rahu antardaśā, a long way off (2014–2015): Rahu is 7th from Ketu, and the 7th from Rahu is Aquarius, the 5th. Bhoga in the 5th: recognition of abilities, some name and fame. The same Rahu antardaśā, a different result.

Mercury–Jupiter: debilitated 6th lord is a blessing

PVNR asks whether Jupiter's debilitation is good or bad and wants a clear answer.

  • Jupiter is the 3rd and 6th lord. A debilitated dusthana lord (6th, 8th or 12th) is a blessing.
  • Jaya Yoga (victory): 6th lord debilitated and 10th lord exalted — in essence, the 10th lord strong and the 6th lord weak.
  • Here the 10th lord Moon is not exalted but is in an adhimitra sthana, which is akin to exaltation, and the 6th lord is debilitated. It is not a perfect Jaya Yoga; an approximate one exists. Jupiter takes part in it, so his period is good.

"Don't have thumb rules that exaltation is good, debilitation is bad. Thumb rules never work. Everything depends on the situation."

What an antardaśā can and cannot show

A student asks whether the finer levels matter once the bhoga of the antardaśā is known.

  • A daśā shows the overall theme of ten or twenty years. An antardaśā shows the focus of one to three years.
  • Within a good two-year antardaśā she can be tense one month over a deadline, praised the next, relaxed after that. Looking back after five years, the two years stand out as the time she achieved something.
  • To see whether a two-year period brings a new beginning, setbacks, losses or fulfilment of desires, the antardaśā is sufficient. The finer levels exist (Part 8), and need far more accuracy.

D-16 Shodasamsa — Pleasure, Vehicles and a Particular Trip

PVNR asks which chart shows "having fun." A student offers the Navamsa. No: the Navamsa is dharma and marital life. The chart is the Shodasamsa.

What D-16 shows

  • Parashara gives pleasure and displeasure (sukha, asukha) and knowledge of vehicles (vahana) to the Shodasamsa.
  • Divisional charts 1 to 12 show physical existence. 13 to 24 show existence at the level of the conscious mind. 25 to 36 show the subconscious.
  • 16 − 12 = 4. D-16 is the 4th house — sukha — at the mental level. Not physical comfort, but the mind's concept of comfort: what gives it happiness or sadness, what troubles it.

The houses of enjoyment

  • For entertainment and enjoyment the houses are the kama trikonas: 3rd, 7th and 11th.

Houses are intangible, arudhas are tangible

  • Bhoga is what is experienced. When you speak of experience, manifestation is the important thing, so the arudhas in the bhoga sign matter.
  • The 3rd house is travel in general — intangible.
  • A3 is a particular trip, a particular vacation: going to a particular place and seeing it.

Applied: PVNR's Mercury sūkṣma antardaśā in Jupiter pratyantardaśā

  • In his D-16 (Cancer lagna), Mercury is in the 9th from Jupiter. The 9th from Mercury is Capricorn, the 7th house. Bhoga in a kama trikona.
  • A3 is in Capricorn.
  • Bhoga in a kama trikona holding A3: a trip, and enjoyment from that trip. That is the family vacation of those days.
