Four Purusharthas: Dharma=Fire Signs, Artha=Earth, Kama=Air, Moksha=Water; Bhava=Intangible (Sanskrit: Meaning), Arudha Pada=Tangible (Sanskrit: Word); Example Chart (Leo Lagna 1960): D24 Mars Dominant on 9th Lord+A9 = Mechanical Engineering; D10 All 3 Kama Trikonas (3-7-11H) = Business; Rahu in A7 = Power Systems (Big Machinery)
The four Purusharthas map to the elements: dharma to the fire signs, artha to earth, kama to air, moksha to water. A house (bhava, "meaning") shows the intangible; its ārūḍha pada ("word") shows the tangible — the learning against the degree, the wish to do business against the company. The case is a mechanical engineer born in 1960 whose power-systems business is in debt. In D24 the 9th lord Saturn is debilitated in a sign of Mars and aspected by Mars, and Mars aspects A9: Mars with Saturn gives mechanical engineering. In D10 the 6th lord is poorly placed while the 3rd, 7th and 11th are linked through Ketu, Mars and Jupiter, so he is made for business; Rahu with A7 makes big machinery the right field, but A7 in the 12th from lagna holds the business back and points to a foreign angle.
Key principle
The Sanskrit word for house is bhava, and the Sanskrit word for this concept is pada. The word bhava means meaning. And the word pada means word. Meaning is intangible. Words are tangible.
Example Chart
The Four Purusharthas and the Elements
The teacher brings this in to explain why verse 67 names Aries and Sagittarius.
| Purushartha | Meaning | Element | Signs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dharma | Doing the right thing; righteous deeds | Fire | Aries, Leo, Sagittarius |
| Artha | Gathering the resources needed to do one's dharma | Earth | Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn |
| Kama | Desire | Air | Gemini, Libra, Aquarius |
| Moksha | Liberation, freedom from it all | Water | Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces |
- Artha is not looked down upon. One gathers what is needed to do one's dharma.
- Kama. It is hard to work at anything with nothing in it for oneself; some desire has to be there. Some desires are virtuous, some evil.
- Moksha does not come by wanting it. Becoming a monk and shutting oneself in a hut does not free a person who still carries karmic debts from earlier lives. They must be paid back, and that needs righteous action, resources and reasonable desires.
"A good human being will strike a balance between all the four. And slowly, as life progresses, he will move more towards moksha."
Why each element:
- Fire — doing right is bright, gives light, and can burn. Upholding dharma may mean hurting oneself or another, even fighting.
- Earth — accumulation is solid.
- Air — a solid stays where it is put, a liquid stays in its glass, but a gas let into a room fills the whole room. Desire, once let in, fills the consciousness. It is expansive: "You have to be careful with that."
- Water — moksha.
The same four as house trines (stated again in the D10 discussion): 1-5-9 dharma; 2-6-10 artha — overcoming obstacles and getting money, the basic career houses; 3-7-11 kama; 4-8-12 moksha — giving up, letting go.
Bhava and Pada — Intangible and Tangible
A9 came up in the case study, and the teacher stopped to explain it. From a house, by a calculation, one gets a point called its ārūḍha pada (A1, A2 … A12). It has to do with the tangible manifestation of that house.
"The Sanskrit word for house is bhava, and the Sanskrit word for this concept is pada. In Sanskrit, words have different meanings, and people hide sophisticated knowledge in the double and triple meanings of the words. The word bhava means meaning. And the word pada means word."
- A meaning is in the mind — the speaker's and the listener's. Nobody can put a finger on it. It is intangible.
- A word is heard by everyone. It is tangible.
- So the house shows the intangible, and its pada shows the tangible.
| Matter | The house — intangible | The pada — tangible |
|---|---|---|
| 4th house | Happiness; whether one feels luxury from the vehicle | The car the world sees — a BMW, a Harley-Davidson, a Hyundai; the TV |
| Communication | One's communication skills | The lecture given, the conference proceedings, the book written |
| 9th house (bachelor's education) | The learning | The degree, the stamp: mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, lawyer |
| 7th house (business) | The wish to do business, thinking up a deal | The company he owns or is a partner in, and its fate |
Use:
- For the subject of the bachelor's degree, mix the 9th house and A9 and take the common factor.
- For an actual business — what it is, how it fares — read A7, not only the 7th house.
Case Study — The Chart, Its Accuracy, and D24
The question
- A mechanical engineer. As far as is known he went into business more or less straight away.
- He started a business about ten years before the class (the class is in mid-2010). It never got off the ground. He has struggled ever since and is now heavily in debt.
- Is relief coming, and what can he do?
- Other known facts: two children, a boy then a girl. Marriage date not known.
Is the time usable?
- Readings are only as good as the birth time. People round to five minutes, and the definition of birth itself is disputed, so allow up to five minutes of error.
- Lagna at 28°25′ Leo sits in the middle of the last daśāṁśa (27°–30°), not on a border.
- D10 lagna changes sign only 5m55s earlier or 6m30s later. D10 lagna Taurus is taken as correct.
D24 — why mechanical engineering
General early education is the 4th house, the bachelor's degree the 9th, the master's the 2nd.
- D24 lagna: Gemini. The 9th is Aquarius, lords Saturn and Rahu.
- No planet has more than a three-quarter aspect on the 9th house. So look at the lord.
- Saturn is in Aries — debilitated, weak, in a sign of Mars — and Mars aspects him (graha dṛṣṭi: Mars in Libra, the 7th from it).
- A9 is in Capricorn, a sign of Saturn. (The teacher first read Sagittarius, then corrected a software option.) So Saturn rules both the 9th house and A9: he is the key planet.
- Mars in Libra aspects A9 in Capricorn by his 4th aspect — 90%.
- So Mars has the strongest say over the 9th. Saturn is too weak to give the education himself; Mars gives it. Mars shows engineering.
- The second influence on Mars is Saturn, not Rahu or Ketu. So it is not electrical or electronics. It is the structural kind — civil or mechanical.
"So because of the Saturn-Mars influence, he is a mechanical engineer."
- D24 lagna would become Taurus 3m51s earlier and Cancer 1m19s later. Since the chart explains the degree, the time is good to within about a minute. "Somebody did a decent job."
D10 — Business, Not Service; A7 and the Field of Business
D10 lagna: Taurus, at 14°. The teacher counts houses from the lagna degree: the 1st house runs from 14° Taurus to 14° Gemini. A planet in the lagna sign but below 14° is in the 12th house. This matters three times below.
The 6th or the 7th
- 6th strong → he works for somebody else.
- 7th strong → the desire is strong, he has to call the shots, he deals with people → own business.
- 3rd is initiative, 11th is gains. 3, 7 and 11 are mutual trines and support each other. If they are linked, or one of them — the 7th above all — is very strong, he will be in business.
In this chart:
- 6th lord Venus (6th = Libra) is in Aries, the 12th sign, a sign of Mars who is no friend of his. The house of service is not well placed.
- 7th = Scorpio, with two lords, Mars and Ketu. Ketu is in Scorpio — a lord in his own house makes the house strong.
- The other lord, Mars, is in the 3rd (Cancer) — initiative, boldness, starting things. 7th and 3rd are joined.
- 11th lord Jupiter is in Pisces, his own sign, and aspects Mars by the 5th aspect (graha dṛṣṭi, Pisces to Cancer).
- So all three Kama Trikonas — 3, 7, 11 — are connected.
- Saturn is the karaka of service, Mars of business. The 7th is tied to Mars.
"This is actually a no-brainer. I explained it in such detail, but if you see this chart, there is no ambiguity at all."
Will he succeed? The lagna
- For success the lagna must be strong. Here the Sun and Rahu are in the lagna sign. The Sun, planet of recognition, is eclipsed by Rahu.
- Lagna lord Venus. The teacher first called him "in the 12th house" (Aries). A student pointed out that by degree he falls in the 11th house. The teacher accepted it: "Oh, lagna lord is in 11th house. Okay, that's good then." So that weakness is withdrawn.
- No conditional daśā applies — lagna is not vargottama, lagna lord is not in the 7th nor the 7th lord in lagna. Use Vimshottari.
A7 in the 12th from lagna
-
The business as an owned, visible thing is tangible, so it is read from A7.
-
A7 is at 6°6′ Taurus — below the lagna degree, so in the 12th house from lagna.
-
In his mind he wants to do business. The tangible business sits in the house of loss.
"So forget the dashas. In general, this is a chart where the person may not be able to make much success in business because A7 is in the 12th house of loss."
- Had A7 been in the 9th from lagna, there would be a chance.
- The way out is in the 12th itself. The 12th is not only loss; it is also foreign things, things far away. Business in a far country, or business with a far country — importing or exporting — has a better chance. He is in India.
- Rahu in A7 also shows dealings with foreigners. The teacher's view: he should have taken partners or given the business a foreign angle.
Is power systems the right field?
- "Power systems" is a tangible description → read A7, not the 7th.
- The Sun is below A7 in Taurus — the 12th from A7. He will not give success.
- Rahu is at about 9° Taurus, within 3° of A7 → in the 1st house from A7.
- Rahu shows big machinery. Ketu shows small machines, computers.
"I was suspecting maybe he is doing a wrong business. But given that Rahu is in A7, this is probably the right business for him. He has chosen the right field."
The field is right. The trouble is A7 in the 12th from lagna.
What the site's chart shows differently
- The teacher's software has Rahu at the very start of Virgo in the rāśi chart; the site's chart has him at the very end of Leo. In D10 both put Rahu in Taurus, but the degree differs, so "Rahu at 9° Taurus, within 3° of A7, in the 12th house" cannot be read off the site's chart.
- The site shows houses by sign. By sign Venus is in the 12th, Saturn in the 4th (Leo), Jupiter in the 11th and Rahu in the 1st. The class places them by degree from a 14° Taurus lagna.
