Example Chart (1980, Aries Lagna) — Marriage Crisis D7/UL Analysis: 8th from UL Loaded (7 Planets on 2nd/8th Axis), Jagannatha Hora Ayanamsa (Fixed Chitra Plane) & First vs Second Marriage via Tithi Pravesh
A marriage of 2008 is in crisis: the wife has left and wants a divorce. In the Rasi the Upapada is in Capricorn with Mercury and Ketu in the 2nd from it and five planets in the 8th from it, including its 7th lord Moon — the first marriage does not survive. The native had earlier lived with a woman for three years, so the question is whether the 2008 wedding is the first marriage or the second. Narayana Dasha and Vimshottari justify both; the Tithi Pravesha of 2008 settles it, because the Tithi Ashtottari dasha of the 7th lord Jupiter gave the wedding. It is the first marriage, since marriage is a life commitment and not just living together. The Tithi Pravesha Navamsas of 2008 and 2009 and the wife's chart all point to a break, with June–July 2009 critical and October–November the only opening. The page also explains the Jagannatha ayanamsa, which moves the native's Venus from 29°59'58" Aries to 0°03' Taurus.
Key principle
What is marriage? It is basically commitment to a person. You basically think of spending your whole life with that person.
Example Charts
Jagannatha Ayanamsa
The topic comes up while the chart of Part 4 is being entered. With Lahiri ayanamsa Venus is at 29°59'58.78" Aries, under 2 seconds of arc from the border. With the Jagannatha ayanamsa Venus is at 0°03' Taurus. No other planet changes sign.
Why a reference plane is needed:
- The planets are not in one plane. They lie near a plane, each a little off it. Their positions have to be projected on one two-dimensional plane, and on that plane you mark 0°, 30°, 60° and so on.
What is normally done (Lahiri):
- The plane used is the plane of the Sun and the Earth's motion around it on that day — the ecliptic of date.
- Tomorrow or a year later that plane is slightly different. So a different plane is used every day.
- This plane wobbles about a mean plane.
- The zero point is fixed by putting Chitra at 180° on one particular day. After that day Chitra wobbles around 180°; it is not exactly there.
Jagannatha ayanamsa:
- The mean plane is the plane in which the Sun, and the whole solar system with it, goes around the Vishnu Nabhi. For all practical purposes, by what can be measured now, that plane is fixed. All positions are projected on it; the ecliptic of date is ignored.
- The start of the zodiac is set so that the projection of Chitra on this plane is at exactly 180° every day, at every moment.
- Nothing is arbitrary. Many ayanamsas rest on a coincidence date, a day on which the tropical and sidereal zodiacs are taken to have coincided. This one has no such date. It rests on two assumptions only: Chitra at 180°, and the plane of the solar system's motion around the Vishnu Nabhi.
What it changes:
- It makes a difference in Tithi Pravesha.
- In natal charts it almost never matters. It matters in border cases like this one: Venus changes rasi, so the Narayana Dasha changes, in the Rasi and in the Navamsa.
- The teacher: "I strongly recommend this ayanamsa." It is available only from Jagannatha Hora 3.2.
Chart Analysis — A Marriage in Crisis
The Question
- The class had seen this chart before. Engagement: November 24, 2007. Wedding: April 25, 2008.
- The wife wants a divorce. She left the previous month and went back to her family abroad. The native and his parents do not see enough reason for it.
- The question comes through his mother: is reconciliation possible, and is there any remedy?
Rasi Chart
- Aries lagna. The 7th lord Venus is at 0° Taurus in the 2nd house (with Lahiri it was in lagna).
- Five planets in Leo, the 5th: Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu. Mercury and Ketu in Aquarius, the 11th. Sun in Pisces, the 12th.
- A student points to the previous class: 7th lord in the 2nd gives many wives. The teacher: that could be, but do not jump to a conclusion from one planet.
Why the First Marriage Does Not Survive — Upapada
This was the verdict of the earlier reading. It did not rest on Venus, which was then taken in lagna. It rested on the Upapada (UL) in the Rasi chart.
- UL is in Capricorn.
- 2nd from UL (Aquarius): Mercury and Ketu.
- 8th from UL (Leo): Mars, Moon, Saturn, Rahu, Jupiter.
- Seven planets on the 2nd–8th axis of the Upapada, five of them in the 8th house of death.
- Among the five, counted from UL: the 7th lord Moon — "7th lord in 8th is a terrible combination"; the 2nd lord Rahu; the 3rd lord Jupiter. Saturn is also 2nd lord, but he is the lagna lord of the UL too, so he is not that bad.
- Verdict: the first marriage is very problematic and will not survive.
First Marriage or Second?
Before this marriage the native lived with a woman for three years. The earlier reading took that as the first marriage and the 2008 wedding as the second. The teacher tests that.
Narayana Dasha of the Rasi:
- Capricorn dasha, Aries antardasha. The antardasha sign should aspect the Upapada for marriage.
- Aries does not aspect Capricorn. It aspects Leo, the 8th from UL, which stands for the second marriage. This favours the second marriage.
Narayana Dasha of the Navamsa (Cancer lagna):
- Sagittarius dasha, Aquarius antardasha. By the three-parts rule the lord Jupiter gives his results in the first third, and that part was running.
- From the 7th house (Capricorn, the first marriage) Jupiter is the 3rd and 12th lord in the 6th — a Viparita Raja Yoga from the 7th. He can give marriage.
- From the 2nd house (Leo, the second marriage) Jupiter is the 5th lord aspecting the 5th. He can give marriage.
- Both can be justified.
Vimshottari:
- Moon dasha began in 2007. Moon is the Navamsa lagna lord; he can give any marriage, first, second or third.
- Had the event fallen at the end of Sun dasha: Sun is the 2nd lord in the Navamsa and can give the second marriage.
- Not decisive.
Matching the wife's chart to the Navamsa:
- Her chart: Taurus lagna, lagna lord Venus with Sun in a fiery sign. Venus and Sun mark her.
- First wife = 7th house of his Navamsa (Capricorn): Venus sits in it, and Sun in Scorpio aspects it by rasi drishti. Its lord is Saturn.
- Second wife = 2nd house of his Navamsa (Leo): its lord is Sun, in Scorpio with Ketu, a Martian sign; Venus and Mars both aspect him.
- Both fit. On this the teacher first leans to the second marriage, then withdraws it.
Tithi Pravesha of 2008 — the clincher:
- The Tithi Pravesha falls on March 18, 2008. Ruler of the year (hora lord): Mercury, in the 7th house of the Rasi (Leo lagna).
- Tithi Ashtottari dasha on April 25, 2008: Jupiter dasha, Mercury antardasha.
- In the Navamsa of that chart (Virgo lagna) Jupiter is the 7th lord in the 3rd house, Scorpio, aspecting the 7th by graha drishti. Mercury is the lagna lord in a trine, the 5th. The 7th lord's dasha gave the marriage. That is a first marriage.
- The second marriage is seen from the 2nd house, Libra. Counted from Libra, Jupiter is the 3rd and 6th lord in the 2nd. "3rd lord in 2nd does not give marriage. He actually breaks it." His dasha cannot give a second marriage.
- The Navamsa lagna has leeway of about 5 minutes forward and 11 minutes backward, so a wrong birth time is very unlikely.
"Using the Tithi Pravesha of 2008, both are not making sense. Only one of them is making sense. The other one is zero sense. So my conclusion is that this is the first marriage."
- So the 2008 wedding is the first marriage. The earlier three years were only a relationship. The Upapada verdict then falls on this marriage: "the chance of success is very low".
What Counts as a Marriage
- Can a man live in the same house with a woman for three years and it still not count? Yes. It depends on what was in his mind.
- Marriage is a commitment to a person: you think of spending your whole life with that person, sharing it and making compromises together.
- His example: someone marries a citizen to get a green card, with an understanding to divorce once it comes. Even after three or four years together that may not count, because it is not a life commitment.
- Some people use a rule of one year of living together. The teacher doubts it: if the commitment is full and the spouse dies after a month, the chart may still show it as a marriage.
- It makes no difference what country or community the partner is from. What the relationship was in his mind decides.
- The only way to tell is from events: look at the dasha running at the event in each system and see whether first or second marriage fits. Sometimes it is clear. Here only the Tithi Pravesha made it clear.
"What is marriage? It is basically commitment to a person. You think of spending your whole life with that person."
The Marriage Year — Tithi Pravesha 2008, Navamsa
The trouble began about two months after the wedding. The teacher reads the Tithi Ashtottari dashas of the year in the Tithi Pravesha Navamsa (Virgo lagna; the 7th house is Pisces):
- Venus (July–August): in the 6th house. From the 7th house he is the 3rd and 8th lord in the 12th, the house of loss. Problematic. The trouble probably started here, at the end of June or in July.
- Sun: in the 12th house of loss. Not good.
- Moon (October–November): in the 8th house with Ketu, eclipsed by him. That is the 2nd, a Maraka sthana, from the 7th house. The really bad dasha.
- Mars: the 3rd and 8th lord from lagna, joined with the lagna lord Mercury and afflicting him. From the 7th house Mars is the 2nd lord and Mercury the 7th lord — two Marakas together.
- Four planets are in Maraka sthanas in this Navamsa.
- "The 8th house has to be involved for an end of marriage." Moon and Mars are the ones: September 29 to December 20. It is not a divorce yet, but in that period the wife said she wanted one and left.
- Mercury, running at the time of the class: the lagna lord. Though afflicted by the 8th lord, he wants to rescue the marriage. A good dasha for thinking of ways to make it work.
The Coming Year — Tithi Pravesha 2009
If a divorce comes, it comes in the next year. That Tithi Pravesha falls on April 6, 2009: Virgo lagna in the Rasi, Pisces lagna in the Navamsa. The Navamsa lagna again has leeway (about 11 minutes backward, 6 forward).
- Ruler of the year: Sun.
- Rasi: Sun is the 12th lord in the 7th house of marriage, combusting Venus there.
- Navamsa: Sun is the 6th lord, in a Dusthana, in an inimical sign.
- The Navamsa lagna lord Jupiter is in the 6th, the house of separation from the wife. He cannot rescue.
- The 7th lord Mercury is in Aries, the 8th from the 7th house, with Rahu. Counted from the 7th house, that is the lagna lord with the 6th lord in the 8th house of mṛtyu — in a person's chart a long or fatal disease. "It is showing death of marriage, unfortunately."
- In the 7th house: Moon is good there, but Venus is with him, and Venus is the 3rd and 8th lord from lagna. A Maraka in the 7th.
- Dashas of the year: Jupiter not great. Rahu, in the June–July period, terrible: he is the one afflicting the 7th lord, and from lagna he is the 12th lord, which shows giving up the marriage. Venus is no better. If there is any chance of a patch-up it is in Moon dasha, October–November. "Until then there is no chance. So that is a lot of time."
The Wife's Chart
January 9, 1981, 3:37 PM, Singapore. It is her first marriage.
Rasi: Taurus lagna. Lagna lord Venus with Sun in the 8th, Sagittarius. Saturn and Jupiter together in the 5th. Moon in the 10th. Mercury, Mars and Ketu in the 9th.
Vimshottari and a rectification:
- Jupiter–Ketu is running, and Jupiter–Ketu also gave the marriage.
- With the given time the Navamsa lagna is Aquarius: Jupiter is the 2nd and 11th lord in the 4th, Ketu is in the 5th. Not a strong case for marriage.
- The teacher tries 3:40:30 PM. The Navamsa lagna becomes Pisces. Jupiter is the lagna lord, Ketu the 9th lord, and from Jupiter Ketu is the 7th lord. Now Jupiter–Ketu giving marriage makes sense.
- The antardasha starting in a few days is Venus. In the Pisces Navamsa, Jupiter and Venus are the lagna lord and the 8th lord together in the 3rd house. The 8th lord's antardasha: a chance of the marriage breaking.
Navamsa Narayana Dasha (Pisces lagna):
- The marriage came at the end of Cancer dasha. Cancer aspects the Upapada and is the 5th from lagna. It can give marriage.
- Leo dasha began a few days before the class. Leo is the 6th house, separation.
Her Tithi Pravesha of 2008:
- Ruler of the year: Mercury. In the Rasi he is connected with the Upapada. In the Navamsa he is the 9th lord in the 7th house, and the 7th lord Mars is in lagna aspecting him — a Raja Yoga. Marriage in this year is well shown.
- But the Tithi Ashtottari dasha at the wedding was Jupiter, and the teacher cannot explain it: "It makes no sense to me. So I don't want to justify it somehow or the other." Tithi Ashtottari, like Vimshottari, fails in a few charts and years; something is still not understood.
- Trouble in the same year: from the 7th house, Moon is in a Maraka sthana and the Moon–Rahu–Ketu axis falls on the 2nd–8th. The 7th house is occupied by its own 6th lord, Mercury, the ruler of the year — quarrels in the marriage.
Her Tithi Pravesha of 2009:
- Ruler of the year: Venus. In the Navamsa he is the 7th lord in the 7th house — some promise. In the Rasi he is the 6th lord and is in the 2nd from the Upapada, so not that good.
- The lagna is in Gandanta. The Navamsa lagna lord Mars is afflicted by the Badhaka lord Rahu and the 8th lord Ketu, and aspected by the other Badhaka lord Saturn. This is the main problem.
- The dharma lord Jupiter is in the 11th, the Badhaka sthana, with the 6th lord of litigation. He gives the 6th lord's results and can give separation.
- Savers: Sun — the 9th lord in lagna in the Rasi, the 5th lord in the 5th in the Navamsa — around September. Moon — the 4th lord in the 4th, a quadrant lord in a quadrant from the 7th house, the 10th from the 7th — in October. Mars is the 8th lord too, but as lagna lord he tries to rescue.
- Rahu dasha, around June, is very bad.
- There is more hope in her chart than in his. Overall it is still not favourable.
Verdict
- Both run the Rahu dasha of their Tithi Pravesha around the same time. June–July 2009 is the critical period.
- In both charts the only opening is October–November. If the matter can be prolonged till then there is some chance of reconciliation.
- "My feeling is this is most likely going to break. If you want, do something about it, but prepare yourself for it."
Remedy
- The Upapada is in Makara, owned by Saturn: worship Saturn, fast on Saturday.
- The 2nd lords from the Upapada are Saturn and Rahu. Rahu is Durga. At the end of the fast read the Durga Saptashati or a Durga stotra, then eat.
- The mother had been told by someone else to pray to Kali. The teacher: the generic form of Kali is for detachment, though there are forms in which she is the mother caring for her children; with Saturn and Mars involved it is possible. He prefers Durga because Rahu dominates.
- The effort needed would be tremendous and the odds are small. If the aim is not met the person loses faith. A prayer given to someone who is not strongly faithful should be for a cause with a good chance of success.
"So I wouldn't really suggest anything. I will probably say, very difficult to make it work."
