Cancer Patient (Taurus Lagna 1977, Rectified 3:24:36): Leo D9 Lagna = Saturn 7L in 7H (Marriage); Gulika <1° from Rasi Lagna + Rahu Aspect = Poison/Cancer Yoga; D30 Scorpio Lagna: Mercury 8L in 12H + Rahu = Hidden Chronic Disease; Rahu-Ketu (Maraka from Lagna+Moon) = June 2010 Critical; Middle Life (Longevity); Nidhana Shula Dasha Virgo → Libra

A 32-year-old man with fourth-stage lung cancer, given three to four months by his doctors, whose chart other astrologers had passed as safe. The birth time is first rectified to 3:24:36 AM (±14 seconds) by testing marriage, a daughter, the move abroad and the first job in Vimshottari on the Navamsa, Saptamsa, Chaturthamsa and Dasamsa, and again in each year's Tithi Pravesha chart. The disease is read in Trimshamsa: Scorpio rises, and the 8th lord Mercury sits there within 2° of Rahu, with Ketu and Gulika, in the 12th house by longitude. In the Rasi, Taurus lagna has Gulika within half a degree and Rahu's 98.7% aspect, with no benefic aspect to relieve it. The three longevity pairs give middle life. Rahu-Ketu antardasha from June 2010 to June 2011 is the maraka period, both from Lagna and from the Moon, with July 2010 the peak by the annual chart; Venus, the lagna lord, can give recovery from July 2011 if he survives.

Key principle

I guess astrologers just look at the Rasi. They don't look at Gulika, Rahu aspect, all these things. They don't even look at longitude. They just see Rahu in 5th house. That's it.

Example chart — Taurus lagna, longevity and D-30 (1977)
Jul 21, 1977 · 3:24:36 AM IST (rectified in class from the stated 3:25) · the example (73°52'E, 18°32'N)
Rasi: Taurus lagna 26°36'. Mars and Venus are in Taurus but before the lagna degree, so in the 12th house by longitude; Jupiter at 0° Gemini is in the 1st. Rahu at 25°43' Virgo throws his 9th-house aspect almost exactly on the lagna degree; Gulika (not drawn) is at 27° Taurus. Ketu is the 7th lord. From the Moon in Leo, Rahu is the 7th lord in the 2nd and Ketu is in the 8th. D30: Scorpio lagna with Mercury (8th lord), Rahu and Ketu in it; Venus, a maraka there, is in the 3rd with Saturn. D9: Leo lagna, Rahu in lagna, Saturn the 7th lord in the 7th. D7: Taurus lagna, 5th counted backwards is Capricorn; the site shows Rahu in Virgo where the class had Leo (Rahu is on the Saptamsa boundary). D4: Aquarius lagna, Rahu and Jupiter in the 5th, Saturn in the 3rd aspecting the 9th, Venus in the 10th. D10: Virgo lagna, Rahu in the 5th.

Example chart

The question (early 2010): A 32-year-old man was diagnosed with lung cancer in February. It may have begun as bone cancer. It is in the 4th stage, and the doctors give him 3-4 months. Astrologers who saw the chart said they do not see death in this period. The illness was first diagnosed in September 2009.

The chart (site's cast, matching the class): Taurus lagna 26°36'. Mars and Venus in Taurus, Jupiter at 0° Gemini, Sun, Mercury and Saturn in Cancer, Moon in Leo, Rahu at 25°43' Virgo, Ketu in Pisces. Navamsa lagna Leo. Trimshamsa lagna Scorpio.

Known events:

  • Failed 11th standard: 1993
  • Father's accident, with the native driving (soft-tissue damage to one leg and one hand): April 1995
  • First job: April 2002
  • House purchased: 2005
  • Marriage: July 28, 2006
  • Went abroad for a new job: April 2007
  • Daughter born: June 17, 2007
  • Land purchased in his mother's name: June 2008

Rectification

The method: test each event in Vimshottari on the natal divisional chart, then in that year's Tithi Pravesha (annual) chart, and each time note how many minutes or seconds the lagna of the chart in use can bear.

"We are basically using multiple techniques to be confident of the time. If everything gels well together, you can be confident ... and then we can confidently give predictions. Otherwise, we are just speculating."

Marriage (July 28, 2006) — Rahu-Saturn, Navamsa

  • A student had already moved the Navamsa lagna back one sign, to Leo. The teacher did the same: 3:24:49, "either this or before. If it is after this, marriage makes no sense." So the stated time is wrong by at least 10 seconds.
  • Leo Navamsa lagna: Saturn is the 7th lord in the 7th house (Aquarius). Rahu, the other lord of the 7th, is in lagna. Rahu dasha, Saturn antardasha giving marriage makes very good sense.
  • A student asked about Venus, the karaka, in the 12th of Navamsa. It did not matter: it was not Venus dasha. Had it been, some displacement or trouble was possible.
  • The site's chart turns the Navamsa lagna to Virgo a few seconds earlier than the teacher's software did: it shows Virgo at 3:24:49 and Leo at the final 3:24:36.

Marriage in the 2005-06 Tithi Pravesha chart

  • Lunar birthday, Shravana Shukla Panchami: August 10, 2005. The 2006 one fell on July 30, two days after the wedding, so the 2005 chart applies.
  • Hora lord Venus, so Venus rules the year.
  • Marriage came in Jupiter dasha, Moon antardasha. (The teacher first read the date as June and said Saturn; a student corrected him.)
  • In the annual Navamsa, Libra rises. Jupiter is exalted in the 10th, but he is the 3rd and 6th lord — not likely to give marriage. He is with the 7th lord Mars and Ketu.
  • Scorpio lagna would need 13 minutes added: ruled out, and it would spoil the natal chart. Virgo lagna needs at least 1 minute 48 seconds subtracted; then Jupiter is the 7th lord exalted in the 11th, and marriage makes sense.
  • It can also be justified as it stands, from Venus lagna (Shukra lagna can be used for marriage besides lagna): Venus is strong, the 7th lord is with him, and Jupiter is his dispositor.
  • No compelling logic either way, so no change was made.

"Usually whatever time people give, it can be wrong by up to 5 minutes."

Daughter (June 17, 2007) — Rahu-Saturn again, Saptamsa

  • Saptamsa lagna is Taurus. For an even sign count backwards: the 5th is Capricorn, lord Saturn. Saturn's antardasha gave the child.
  • Rahu is in the 8th from that sign, and in the 3rd from its lord Saturn. Taking Saturn as the Paka lagna, Rahu is the 9th lord in the 3rd.
  • The site's Saptamsa puts Rahu one sign later (Virgo, not Leo). Rahu is at 25°43' Virgo, on the Saptamsa boundary.
  • From the Paka lagna of a child, planets in the 1st, 3rd and 8th give that child. A student asked why the 3rd: it is the 11th from the 5th, and it is vitality. The 8th is longevity.
  • The antardasha must explain the event better than the mahadasha. A mahadasha runs 18-19 years; an antardasha 1.5 to 3.

"In this case, antardasha is of Saturn, and Saturn is the planet who is showing that particular child."

  • Leeway of the Saptamsa lagna: about 4 minutes earlier, 14 minutes later. So the backward error is under 3 minutes 59 seconds.

Daughter in the 2006-07 Tithi Pravesha chart

  • Lunar birthday: July 30, 2006. Ruler of the year: Sun.
  • June 17, 2007 falls in Saturn dasha (June 12 to July 17), Jupiter antardasha (June 12-18).
  • The first child is from the 5th; its lord is the Sun. Saturn is in the 3rd from the Sun — "just like in the natal chart." Jupiter is the lord of the sign the Sun is in. A planet tied to the 1st and a planet tied to the 3rd from the Paka lagna.
  • Apart from the technicalities: the 5th house must be active. See the 5th from lagna and also from Jupiter, the karaka of children. Jupiter is in Saturn's sign and Saturn is in the 5th from Jupiter.
  • Leeway of this chart: 17 minutes backward, 142 seconds forward. Nothing to narrow.

Going abroad (April 2007) — Rahu-Saturn again, Chaturthamsa

  • Chaturthamsa lagna is Aquarius. Rahu is in the 5th (Gemini) with Jupiter.
  • Rahu is the karaka of going abroad. In the 5th, the house of patriotism and of being in the motherland, he forms Guru-Chandala yoga with Jupiter.
  • Saturn is the lagna lord and also the 12th lord; the 9th and 12th are the houses for abroad. He sits in the 3rd, which is the 12th from the 4th — a big displacement.
  • Saturn aspects the 9th house (Libra) by his 7th-house graha drishti, about 90-94% by longitude.
  • From Rahu, counting backwards, the 9th is again Libra. So Saturn aspects the 9th from lagna and from Rahu.
  • The 9th lord Venus is in the 10th: he goes abroad for work.
  • A student called Jupiter the badhaka. The teacher corrected it: the 11th is the badhaka for a movable sign; for a fixed sign it is the 9th, so Venus is the badhaka here.
  • Leeway: 14-17 minutes. Nothing to narrow.

In the 2006-07 annual chart the move fell in the Mars or the Mercury period. The badhaka lord, the 9th lord and the 12th lord take one abroad. Mars is a badhaka lord and can give it. Mercury fits far better: he is the 9th lord, he is with Rahu, he aspects and disposits the other badhaka lord Ketu, he disposits the 7th lord Moon (long journeys), and he is in a watery sign.

"Mars also makes sense, but Mercury makes ten times more sense."

So the move was probably after April 13 and before June 12.

Career start (April 2002) — Rahu-Rahu

  • The career began as soon as Rahu dasha came.
  • The 6th and 10th show career; the 6th in particular is service. Rahu is the 6th lord in the 5th house of recognition. (True in the site's Dasamsa: Virgo lagna, Rahu in Capricorn.)

"He was recognized and he got a job."

  • Leeway: 1 minute 25 seconds later, 11 minutes earlier. Nothing to narrow.

In the 2001-02 annual chart the job came in the Mars or the Mercury period (March or May). With Aries rising, Mars is the lagna lord and Mercury the 6th lord, and they are together: perfect. If the birth time were 26 seconds earlier the lagna becomes Pisces; then Mars is the 9th lord in the 12th and Mercury the 7th lord in the 12th, and neither shows a career starting.

The final time

  • Not later by more than 1 second, or the marriage makes no sense. Not earlier by more than 26 seconds, or the 2001-02 annual chart fails.
  • Split the window: subtract 13 seconds. 3:24:36 AM, ±14 seconds.
  • The "perfect logic" for the marriage in the annual Navamsa did not come; only the acceptable logic. "We have to live with it."

Disease — Trimshamsa and the Rasi Lagna

Trimshamsa (D30)

Trimshamsa is "the sign of your punishments for the evils that you have done in the past." The teacher read the disease there first.

  • D30 lagna is Scorpio. The 8th house is Gemini; its lord Mercury is in Scorpio with Rahu and Ketu. Gulika is in Scorpio too.
  • The 8th is disease, suffering, long chronic illness.
  • Scorpio is the most evil sign. As the 8th sign of the natural zodiac it shows hidden things, hard to diagnose.

"There is something hidden about it. You don't know what's going on fully."

  • By longitude (as the teacher's software shows the D30): lagna 18° Scorpio, Mercury 4°, Rahu 2°. Mercury is before the lagna degree, so he is in the 12th house, of hospitalization. Mercury and Rahu are within 2°.
  • Rahu is the planet of depletion, an evil planet, closely joining the 8th lord. And Rahu-Mercury is the antardasha running.

Why lungs, why bones

  • Gemini is the 3rd sign of the natural zodiac: lungs, throat. "Gemini lord being in Scorpio is the problem", not the Virgo lord.
  • For breathing, Saturn is the main karaka and Mercury the secondary one.
  • A student suggested bones from Mercury as the earthy planet. The teacher: the karaka of bone is the Sun. But the Sun is aspected by Rahu and Ketu, so a bone problem is not ruled out. (In D30 the Sun is in Taurus, opposite Rahu and Ketu in Scorpio.)

Rasi: Gulika on the lagna, Rahu's aspect

  • Lagna 26°36' Taurus. Gulika 27° Taurus — less than half a degree away.
  • Rahu, from Virgo, has a 98.7% aspect on the lagna (his 9th-house graha drishti, exact almost to the degree).
  • Moon's aspect is only 26%. No other planet aspects the lagna.
  • Gulika and Rahu show poisons. If they afflict the lagna or the 2nd house, the person can die of poison. Poison need not be a snake bite; cancer works the same way.

"Especially when Gulika is afflicting Lagna or 2nd house, if Rahu is aspecting them, it becomes a very evil combination."

  • A student objected that Rahu is not a malefic for this lagna and is in the 5th. The teacher: he is functionally neutral, owns no evil house, and is a natural malefic. By longitude he is in the 4th house, not the 5th. None of that is the point: the point is Gulika on the lagna with Rahu's 98.7% aspect and no benefic relief. Had Jupiter or Venus aspected, it would have saved.
  • Venus is in Taurus, but by longitude in the 12th house. So is Mars, the 7th lord.
  • Jupiter (0° Gemini) is in the 1st house by longitude. He is the 8th lord, so his power to save is minimal — "but he can save. That is the only hope."

Other weaknesses

  • A student noted the 8th lord Jupiter aspecting the 8th. That is not bad: the 8th house is strong.
  • The 1st is the body, the 3rd vitality, the 8th longevity. Even with a strong 8th, a person can die young if the 1st and 3rd are weak.
  • The 3rd house (Cancer) has bad combinations; the 2nd lord Mercury is there.

Vimshottari and the Marakas

PeriodDatesReading
Rahu-Mercurytill June 9, 2010Mercury is the 8th lord in D30, within 2° of Rahu, in the 12th by longitude.
Rahu-KetuJune 2010 – end of June 2011Ketu is with Rahu and Mercury in D30. In Rasi he is the 7th lord: a maraka.
Rahu-Venusfrom July 2011In D30 Venus is afflicted in the 3rd. In Rasi he is the lagna lord.
  • "Rahu-Mercury, Rahu-Ketu is like the worst period of life."
  • The 2nd and 7th are the maraka sthanas. The antardasha coming in June is of a maraka.
  • Venus as lagna lord is in the 12th house by longitude, so he can give hospitalization, but he can give cure.

"Lagna lord doesn't want to kill a person. Lagna lord wants to save the person at any cost, somehow or the other."

  • In Trimshamsa, Rahu is so close to the 8th lord Mercury that Rahu and Ketu can both act as marakas.

Marakas from Chandra Lagna

Said at the end of the class, on why the other astrologers missed it.

"You don't have to look at the maraka only from lagna. You can look from Moon also. Moon is mind and lagna is body. And if mind is dead, body is dead too."

  • From the Moon (Leo): Rahu is the 7th lord (Aquarius) in the 2nd house (Virgo). 7th lord in the 2nd — "pakka maraka."
  • Ketu is in the 8th from the Moon. A malefic in the 8th is a maraka.
  • So Rahu and Ketu are both marakas. From June 2010 to June 2011 he runs Rahu-Ketu.

Longevity — The Three Pairs

PairPlacementResult
Lagna lord + 8th lordVenus in Taurus (fixed), Jupiter in Gemini (dual)Long life
Lagna + Hora LagnaTaurus (fixed), Hora Lagna 10° Aries (movable)Middle life
Moon + SaturnMoon in Leo (fixed), Saturn in Cancer (movable)Middle life
  • The teacher first checked that Hora Lagna is not on a sign border. At 10° Aries it is safely inside.
  • One long, two middle: a middle-life chart, 36 to 72.
  • No planet is in moolatrikona, so no change on that count.

"Whatever you estimate, if it is middle life, it is basically between 36 and 72. But if there are any evil combinations in the chart, you may have to make some adjustments."

The evil combinations are those of Part 6: Gulika on the lagna with Rahu's aspect, and a weak 1st and 3rd.

Nidhana Shula Dasha

  • The teacher used Parashara's Shula dasha, the Niryana (Nidhana) Shula Dasha — the one taught by a maharshi. "The other Shula dasha is not based on a rishi's teaching."
  • Here it starts from the 2nd house, which is stronger than the 8th.
  • Virgo is running; Libra starts soon.
  • Virgo is the 5th house: a trine, not a favorable period. The 7th and the trines are bad.
  • The teacher first took Libra as the 7th, then corrected himself: Libra should be safe.

"He is at the fag end of a dangerous dasha."

The recording sounds like "5th from Arudha Lagna". The count fits the lagna: Virgo is the 5th and Libra the 6th from Taurus.

The Tithi Pravesha Charts for 2009-10 and 2010-11

2009-10 (lunar birthday July 26, 2009)

  • Ruler of the year: Mars. He is the 6th lord, of disease, in the annual Rasi, and he is in the 6th house in the annual Trimshamsa.
  • The diagnosis of September 2009 was probably in the Rahu period. Rahu is in the 12th, of hospitalization, with the Sun, who is the badhaka lord. Mars, ruler of the year, aspects them, and they aspect the 6th.
  • Saturn period: nothing dangerous in Trimshamsa. In Rasi he is the 8th lord in the 3rd. Bad, not terrible. "For somebody to die, it has to be terrible."
  • Jupiter period: in Trimshamsa he is the 3rd lord, of vitality, in the 7th, of losing life. In Rasi he is the 7th lord; he is retrograde, about to enter his sign of debilitation, and by longitude in the 8th house.

"7th lord in the 8th house is a clear killer combination."

  • Sun, the 3rd lord of vitality, is at 9° Cancer with Ketu, a 6th lord of disease, at 6° Cancer. By sign he is in the 2nd, by longitude in the 1st. Both are at least not in an evil drekkana.
  • Sahamas: Apamrityu Saham (untimely death) is in Scorpio; its lord Ketu is with the Sun. Mrityu Saham is in the 7th house, the maraka sthana, owned by Jupiter.
  • Sun and Jupiter are the two ill-placed planets. Sun's period passed in December-January. Jupiter's is to come.

After July 14, 2010 — the 3rd and 4th weeks of July — is the extremely critical period.

2010-11 (lunar birthday August 14, 2010)

  • Ruler of the year: Venus.
  • Rahu-Ketu in the 3rd: not so bad. Lagna lord Venus in the 6th with Mars: bad, but not as bad as the previous chart. Saturn and Jupiter in the 12th, Jupiter being the 6th lord: hospitalization.
  • In Rasi the 6th lord Ketu is in the 12th and the lagna lord Mercury in the 2nd. He will continue to suffer.

"Things are not looking that terrible. This seems a lot better."

Prognosis

  • The Shula dasha, the natal Vimshottari and the annual chart agree. By Vimshottari, Rahu-Ketu from June 2010 to the end of June 2011 is the maraka period. Within it, July 2010 is the peak.
  • If he survives July, the illness can drag on for a couple of years. Once Ketu's antardasha is over, Venus can give recovery from July 2011.

"The chance of survival is very, very low. It is on the chart, extremely low, but there is some hope. It's not like 0% chance."

  • They should do whatever the doctors want and find the right doctors. If a cure comes in Ketu's period it will be through something new.

"There is a chance when Rahu and Ketu are involved, they can be cured through pathbreaking medicines or new technologies."

Why the other astrologers missed it

"I guess astrologers just look at the Rasi. They don't look at Gulika, Rahu aspect, all these things. They don't even look at longitude. They just see Rahu in 5th house. That's it."

It is visible in the chart: in the amsas, and in the marakas from the Moon (Part 7).
