A student’s own chart: Leo lagna, born May 9, 1983, with recurring nose and respiratory trouble for a few months. The trouble did not start with Ketu mahādaśā in 2007 but recently, so the teacher looks to the antardaśā: Saturn, from April 2012. Saturn is the 6th and 7th lord, a functional malefic for Leo, an enemy of lagna lord Sun, and he aspects the Sun. The 6th shows things that come and go; the 8th, long-term disease — so this is not chronic. From the Moon in Pisces Saturn is the 11th and 12th lord in the 8th; a planet showing disease from both Lagna and Moon can be more serious. Saturn is the Vāyu planet, so the complaint is Vata. The page also covers Moon’s dosha by tithi (full = Kapha, new = Vata; Kṛṣṇa Dvādaśī here = 12/15 Vata) and why the retrogression of an exalted 6th lord reduces the trouble he gives.

Key principle

8th is the house of long-term disease, and 6th is the house of things that may come and go. When a planet shows disease both from Moon as well as Lagna, it can be more serious.

Example Chart

Example chart — Leo Lagna, Vata respiratory trouble in Saturn antardaśā (1983)
May 9, 1983 · 1:48:08 PM IST · India
D-1, Leo lagna. Saturn (6th and 7th lord) is exalted and retrograde in Libra in the 3rd and aspects lagna lord Sun, exalted in Aries in the 9th, by graha dṛṣṭi. Moon is in Pisces in the 8th; from the Moon, Saturn is the 11th and 12th lord in the 8th. The tithi is Kṛṣṇa Dvādaśī, so Moon is 12/15 Vata. Ketu mahādaśā from 2007, Saturn antardaśā from April 2012.

The Case — Leo Lagna, Saturn Antardaśā

The question

  • For the last three or four months the native has had recurring health trouble, mostly of the nose and the respiratory system — something goes wrong about every fifteen days. It is making his job hard.
  • He asks: is it short-term or long-term, what precautions to take, what diet.

Mahādaśā or antardaśā

  • Running daśā: Ketu mahādaśā, since 2007.
  • The teacher asks whether the trouble has been there since 2007 or only recently. The native: only in the last year.

"So it is unlikely that these problems are given just by the mahadasha. They are not mahadasha-wide problems. They are short-term problems. So there must be something in the antardasha."

  • Saturn antardaśā started in April 2012. The trouble began within the last few months. Saturn's period started and then the health problems started.

Can Saturn give disease in this chart — from Lagna

  • Saturn is the 6th and 7th lord from Leo lagna. He is a functional malefic for Leo lagna.
  • He is an enemy of the lagna lord Sun.
  • The 6th is the house of disease. So he can give disease.
  • Saturn is in Libra in the 3rd house and aspects the lagna lord Sun in Aries in the 9th (graha dṛṣṭi, 7th aspect). A duḥsthāna lord influencing the Lagna or the lagna lord can give problems.

6th house or 8th house

"8th is the house of long-term disease, and 6th is the house of things that may come and go. So if the 8th house is triggered in an antardasha or a dasha, you have to be more careful because there is a chance that this will be chronic. But that doesn't seem to be the case here."

From the Moon

  • For health, Lagna is the physical body and Moon is the mind. Both are important.
  • Moon is in Pisces. From the Moon, Saturn is the 11th and 12th lord — again a malefic — and he sits in the 8th house from the Moon (Libra).
  • So Saturn has to do with the 6th from Lagna and the 8th from Moon.

"When a planet shows disease both from Moon as well as Lagna, it can be more serious."

  • The teacher's contrast: a virus that enters the body and gives trouble is a bodily thing, related only to the Lagna. But suppose he eats the wrong things and the balance between prāṇa and apāna is disturbed: breathing is no longer normal, and since breathing is the connection between the body and the mind, the mental state is disturbed too — anxiety for no reason, worry, frustration. By "mental balance" he does not mean someone going mental.

What kind of problem Saturn gives

  • Saturn is the planet of Vata. He is the Vāyu planet, of airy nature. He gives Vata-related, "windy" complaints.
  • So respiratory problems in Saturn's antardaśā make perfect sense.
  • One cannot say which led to which, but there is a problem in the breathing and, as a result, some destabilisation of the mind. Each promotes the other, and they grow together.

Prakṛti and Vikṛti — Which Dosha Troubles This Native

Before giving a Vata-pacifying diet the teacher asks what the native's basic nature is — in general, not just in this period.

"If the basic nature of the person, let's say, is Pitta or something, and then you give a diet that is pacifying Vata for the current vikriti, it may affect the original prakriti. So you want to make sure that the vikriti is not too deviant from the prakriti."

The basic nature — fire

  • Lagna is Leo. Lagna lord Sun is exalted in Aries, another fiery sign. A lot of fire — Pitta.
  • Mars aspects the lagna (graha dṛṣṭi: Mars in Taurus in the 10th, 4th aspect on Leo). More fire.

Influences that show the doṣa

  • Look also at influences on the lagna lord. Any duḥsthāna lord — 6th or 8th — who influences the Lagna or the lagna lord can give problems.
  • Saturn, the 6th lord, aspects lagna lord Sun. So Saturn too shows the native's doṣa. Saturn is a Vata planet.
  • Moon is as important as Lagna. Moon is in Pisces, a Kapha sign, and its lord Jupiter aspects it (graha dṛṣṭi: Jupiter in Scorpio, 5th aspect on Pisces). So there is some Kapha influence.
  • But Moon himself is in the 8th house from Lagna, and a planet in the 8th can define the native's problems.

Moon — Kapha or Vata by how full he is

"The way Parashara defined is: full Moon is Kapha, and new Moon, Moon who is zero, he is Vata. In between, you see how full he is. Let's say he is half, then he is half Kapha, half Vata."

  • Here the tithi is Kṛṣṇa Dvādaśī: twelve of the fifteen tithis of the waning half are gone. Moon is 12/15 Vata. He is basically Vata, not Kapha.
  • So: Moon is a Vata planet in the 8th house. Saturn, a Vata planet, is the 6th lord aspecting the lagna lord. There is a Vata doṣa.

Conclusion

  • The basic nature is fire. But nothing fiery influences the 6th or the 8th.

"There is a strong fire in the person, but the dosha that is likely to trouble the person is Vata."

  • With Saturn's antardaśā running, a diet that pacifies Vata is fine.

An Exalted 6th Lord Who Is Retrograde

Another student says he has the same problem and describes his own Saturn. The teacher turns back to the case chart:

  • In the native's chart Saturn is exalted (Libra). But he is retrograde, so he is not so strong.
  • Suppose he were exalted and not retrograde. Exaltation of the 6th lord is not a great thing: the 6th lord's agenda is to give trouble.

"So the fact that Saturn is retrograde is actually reducing the amount of problem Saturn can give in this case."
