Example Chart — Puzzle Chart: Devastating Event Through Narayana Dasha

A puzzle from a mailing list: the native reports a devastating event "last Tuesday" and asks which area of life it was. The class works it out step by step. Narayana Dasha (Aries dasha, Pisces antardasha) from the natal chart and from the entry chart points to career or children: the combust 10th lord joins the 8th lord, Khara. The nakshatra dasha (Shashtihayani, since the Sun is in lagna) puts the bhoga of the sub-period in the 7th of the D-10 — loss of service. The annual Tithi Pravesha chart shows a 5th–6th lord Duryoga with the ruler of the year and the dasha lord in the 3rd of the D-10 and 12th from Arudha Lagna: a job lost, a short break, a fall in image. PVNR then reads when a job returns, the next year's chart (a Raja Yoga with the ruler of the year, a protecting boss) and the next Narayana Dasha. Includes the Marana Karaka Sthana list and the Arudha Lagna rules for image.

Key principle

If the 10th lord is afflicted by the 8th lord, there can be some shock in career. There can be some disappointment in career during that time.

Example chart

The puzzle: the native wrote to a mailing list that a devastating event had happened in his life "last Tuesday" (the 25th), that the background had been building for two weeks, and that all the good events of his life had come on Tuesdays. He asked the list to guess the event and to say what was in store. One person had guessed it, but by prashna. PVNR's question to the class: which area of life?

The answer, given part-way through: it concerns career, not children. He was let go from his job.

On puzzles: "You may go wrong, but it doesn't matter. … That's the best way to learn."

Step 1 — Narayana Dasha from the Natal Chart

  • Running Aries Narayana Dasha, Pisces antardasha.
  • The dasha was started from lagna, not from the 7th. So Aries itself is the progressed lagna.

Pisces from Aries:

  • The 12th house, of losses. The Sun is there.
  • The 12th is the Sun's Marana Karaka Sthana (Part 6). Houses owned by a planet in MKS are destroyed. From Aries the Sun owns the 5th: children, abilities.
  • The Sun is also karaka for career, and specifically for service.

The lord of Pisces:

  • Jupiter is in Libra, the 7th from Aries. The antardasha can give 7th-house events.
  • The 7th is kama, desire. It is also the 2nd from the 6th — maraka for the 6th house of service. "7th house can give a business, or if somebody is in service, it can bring the end of service."
  • So: karaka of service in MKS in the 12th, and his dispositor in the 2nd from the house of service. Loss of job is possible.

Step 2 — Dasha Pravesha Chakra of Aries Dasha

"Compared to the natal analysis, the entry analysis is always clearer." One entry chart serves all twelve antardashas. In it Capricorn rises and Pisces is the 3rd house.

What is in Pisces:

  • Venus, exalted — lord of the 5th (abilities, their recognition) and the 10th (career). Important events in those areas are due in Pisces antardasha.
  • Sun, the 8th lord. Venus is combust.

Combustion of Venus:

  • Among the avataras of Vishnu the Sun is Sri Rama and Venus is Parashurama. When the two met, Parashurama gave all his power to Rama and withdrew.
  • So whenever Venus and Sun are together, Venus becomes powerless and the Sun's agenda is followed, good or bad. "Sun is like the king, and Venus is like dancing girls."
  • A merely combust planet: the person cannot put energy into its areas; strengthen that planet.

The Sun's agenda here:

  • He is the 8th lord: hard work, unexpected things, anxiety.
  • Alone in Pisces he would have been good — 8th lord in the 3rd, a dusthana lord in another bad house, is a Viparita Raja Yoga. But he joins Venus.
  • "If the 10th lord is afflicted by the 8th lord, there can be some shock in career" — whatever the planets are.
  • Two negatives together: Venus is combust, and he is afflicted by the 8th lord (Khara, Part 7). "A powerless Venus is being tortured by the 8th lord."
  • Result: a disappointment relating to the 5th or the 10th house — children, or career.

Arudha Lagna is also in Pisces:

  • 8th lord in Arudha Lagna: changes in image and status, ups and downs.
  • But the Sun is in a friendly house (Jupiter's), and the 8th is a neutral house, not a malefic one. The image changes but ends up good. "It can't totally destroy the image."
  • Sun in Arudha Lagna is the image of a king. Saturn there would be a different matter.

The lord of Pisces — how he copes:

  • The sign shows the circumstances; the lord shows how you face them (Part 10).
  • Jupiter is in the 9th, a kona, and he is karaka of the 9th. He is with the Moon — Gajakesari Yoga. The Moon with Saturn or Rahu is afflicted; with Jupiter the mind is told "don't worry, everything will be fine."
  • So through the whole antardasha year he is level-headed. He may be perturbed this week and regain balance within a couple of weeks.
  • A student asked whether Jupiter in the 9th with the 8th lord strong in Pisces also raises him in occult studies. Yes: a very good year to learn any occult, traditional or classical subject, with good guidance. PVNR believed the native had begun attending a local study group.

What Narayana Dasha does and does not give here: within this one year a big disappointment in career, children or recognition of abilities is possible. Which week or month is hard to see without going to pratyantardashas. "Just focus on dasha, antardasha. One-year resolution is good enough."

Step 3 — Nakshatra Dasha

Which dasha: the Sun is in lagna in the rasi chart, so Shashtihayani Dasha is used. (The class also noted how strong the Moon is.)

Period at the event: Moon – Mars – Sun. Moon mahadasha ran from 1999 until February 11.

Saptamsa (D-7), Capricorn lagna:

  • 7th lord Moon and 9th lord Mercury are together in the 5th — a Raja Yoga for children. Overall happiness from children in Moon dasha.
  • Rahu is with them. Affliction is by closeness in degrees: Rahu is at the end of the sign and the Moon at the beginning, so they are far apart; Mercury is the one badly afflicted.
  • Both children are shown by these planets. The first child's birth carries severe anxiety (PVNR believed there had been a complication); the second also carries some, because the Moon is still in the sign with Rahu.
  • Lagna lord here is Saturn. Rahu co-owns only Aquarius, not Capricorn.
  • Bhoga of Mars–Sun: Sun is the 5th from Mars; the 5th from the Sun is Gemini, the 6th house, where Venus is in Marana Karaka Sthana. And the Sun is the 8th lord in the 2nd, maraka to the 1st. A bad sub-period for children too.

Dasamsa (D-10), Taurus lagna:

  • Sun and Mercury are together (Budha-Aditya Yoga).
  • Moon mahadasha: Moon is exalted in lagna — good spirits. From Arudha Lagna he is in the 9th, the house of protection: "his Arudha is very well protected by exalted Moon." The whole six-year mahadasha is good for status in career. Ups and downs come from the sub-periods.
  • Moon and Venus have a parivartana. From Arudha Lagna they are the 9th and 11th lords exchanging houses, so the Moon also acts as if in the 11th of gains. Venus is with Rahu, but Rahu is the 10th lord from lagna — "not that bad."
  • Bhoga of Mars–Sun: Mars is in the 9th with Ketu. The Sun is the 6th from him. The 6th from the Sun is the 7th house.
  • In the Dasamsa the 6th is service; the 7th is loss of service, or business. "He may have been laid off or something."

After two systems both children and career still stand out.

Step 4 — Tithi Pravesha Chart of 2004–05

TP data: March 22, 2004, 2:54:32 AM, at the birthplace. Sagittarius lagna.

Hora lord = Mars, ruler of the year.

Dasha at the event: Venus (Tithi Ashtottari).

Rasi of the year:

  • Venus is the 6th lord, in Aries in the 5th with Rahu. Mars, the 5th lord, is in Taurus in the 6th. They have a parivartana.
  • Venus exchanges with the ruler of the year, so the event of the year can come in Venus dasha or Mars dasha.
  • It is a Duryoga. The 5th is the 12th from the 6th: one planet shows abilities and recognition, the other the killing of recognition and having to work hard because there is none. "Each being told to do the job of the other — just confusion." (Rule in Part 12.)
  • Arudha Lagna is in Aries, so it touches status. The 6th is involved: enemies, job. The 5th: children, recognition.
  • "We are still in the same quagmire" — neither career nor children can be ruled out yet.

Saptamsa of the year: 5th lord Venus is in the 12th from the 5th, debilitated. Anxiety over a child's health is possible. The puzzle's answer was not about children, but PVNR felt there may have been some such anxiety and said he would ask.

Dasamsa of the year, Virgo lagna:

  • Venus is the 2nd and 9th lord — a functional benefic with no bad agenda.
  • He is in the 3rd house. Good for Sun, Mars, Rahu, Ketu; average for Venus.
  • 3rd house in D-10 = a short break in career (Part 8). The class agreed: a short break.
  • From Arudha Lagna Venus is in the 12th: loss of image, loss of status.
  • A student objected that Venus is a good lord from Arudha Lagna. Rule: count lordships from Lagna only. From Arudha Lagna look only at where the planet sits.
  • Venus stands for resources (2nd) and fortune (9th). They will seem lost, because Arudha Lagna is what people perceive. "People perceive him as somebody who lost his resources, who lost his fortune, who lost his path."

The class's prediction: he lost his job, with a fall in image. From the 3rd house: a short break, not a two-year one.

A student's point: 6th lord Saturn and Rahu are in the 2nd house, so the 2nd and 6th are strong — he is resourceful in overcoming obstacles. PVNR: a strong 6th lord is not desirable, but it is the artha trikona; he will be busy and will work hard.

The background — Rahu dasha (late November to the first week of January):

  • Rahu is with Saturn in the 2nd and gives Saturn's results.
  • Saturn is the exalted 5th and 6th lord. Because Rahu has an interest in the 6th, he makes Saturn act as the 6th lord.
  • Exalted 6th lord = strong enemies (Part 3). "It's a good period for his enemies."
  • Saturn and Rahu: harsh, mean, selfish methods; Rahu adds scheming.
  • So the scheming against him was done in Rahu dasha before he could see it, most of all in the first week of January. PVNR said he would ask the native whether that week mattered.

Step 5 — When Does He Get a Job?

Rasi first. "Rasi is his physical existence. Dasamsa is the professional environment." A man without a job is restless in body, so that must show in the rasi too.

Sun dasha of the year (from March 21) — rasi:

  • Sun is the 9th lord and has a parivartana with 4th lord Jupiter — a Raja Yoga. The Sun acts as Jupiter, so with the Moon there is an indirect Gajakesari, and a Raja Yoga of lagna lord Jupiter with 10th lord Mercury.
  • Before the exchange, 9th lord Sun with 10th lord Mercury is a Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga, but because of the parivartana it will not give in full.
  • The 8th lord Moon is there too. A Raja Yoga joined by the 8th lord is weakened: it fructifies amid uncertainty, change and tension.
  • Still far better than Venus. Physically his tension will be less.

Sun dasha — Dasamsa:

  • Sun is in the 5th house, with Jupiter. Planets in one house exchange results, so the Sun gives Jupiter's.
  • Jupiter is debilitated, but he is lord of Arudha Lagna and of A10 (Rajya Pada, the tangible work) and A11 (the tangible gain, the salary).
  • Both are in Saturn's sign, bad for both. The sign shows the circumstances, so the opportunity comes under some negative circumstance.
  • With Jupiter debilitated: perhaps a lower salary, some lowering of status. "It may not be the perfect job for him."
  • The Sun is also the 12th lord: giving up, settling for less.
  • Their dispositor Saturn is exalted: a routine, laborious job, but he will work hard happily.
  • Prediction: if he has no job by then, he should get one after March 21 and before April 11, and it will not be the best job.

Within Venus dasha — Mercury antardasha (to February 6):

  • Mercury is lagna lord and 10th lord in the 10th — Bhadra Mahapurusha Yoga.
  • Bhoga: Mercury is the 8th from Venus; the 8th from Mercury is the 5th house — recognition.
  • So before February 6 he may land a job, or someone he worked for before, or who knows his work, may call him.
  • Saturn antardasha after it: bhoga falls in lagna, and Saturn is the 12th from the dasha lord. Not bad, not that good.
  • Venus in the 3rd also shows contract positions. Before March 21 a contract or a job may come; something stable is more likely in Sun dasha. PVNR: "I am not fully confident" about Venus dasha.

Step 6 — The Next Year (Tithi Pravesha 2005–06)

TP data: April 9, 2005, 11:32:15 PM, at the birthplace. Scorpio lagna. Hora lord = Sun.

Rasi of the year:

  • Sun is the 10th lord, in the 5th house — and badly afflicted. Sun 26°, Mercury 8°, Venus 28°, Rahu 29° of Pisces.
  • Venus is strong here. Rahu and Venus are great friends (Part 11), and the Sun is himself eclipsed by Rahu.
  • Jupiter is the lord of the sign they all occupy and aspects them from the 20th degree of Virgo — within 7° of the Sun (graha dṛṣṭi). 5th lord and 10th lord aspecting each other: a Raja Yoga.
  • "When you see a Raja Yoga and one of the planets giving it is the ruler of the year, that will dominate during that year."
  • So there will again be scheming against him in the new job, but this time he succeeds. After some anxiety he gets good recognition.
  • When: Sun dasha is only two days in this year, April 9–11; otherwise September 21 – November 23, or after March 12 of the following year.
  • Arudha Lagna is in Cancer, so Pisces is the 9th from it. Planets there protect the image — except Mercury, the 8th lord from lagna, who tends to break it (Part 13). Mercury and the Sun are together and exchange results.

Dasamsa of the year, Pisces lagna:

  • Sun is the 6th lord of service and the 6th is strong: "this year there will be service only", no business.
  • He is in Arudha Lagna: a good image. But he is in the 12th from his own house, so it is not a smooth year.
  • A good boss. Lagna lord and 10th lord Jupiter is in the 9th; 9th lord Mars is in lagna. Parivartana between lagna and 9th — a Lakshmi Yoga. "He will be good to his boss, his boss will be good to him, and the boss will protect him." Most of all in the Mars and Jupiter periods.

Verdict: the problem is solved soon, the break is short, and he redeems himself next year. An anxious year but a very good one for career. "It's a pain that's worth it. Because at the end he will win."

Step 7 — Corroborating with the Next Narayana Dasha

Leo dasha starts April 7, 2005, for 5 years.

Leo in the natal chart:

  • The 6th house: the job is prominent, and there are obstacles to overcome throughout.
  • Ketu is there. Ketu is good in only three houses — 3, 6, 11. He is likely to become more spiritual.
  • A10 is there too. A10 shows the things accomplished in career, so the dasha brings accomplishments he can remember later.
  • A student noted that the 6th lord (the Sun) sits in lagna. PVNR agreed that is bad (Part 15). Overall a good dasha, with many obstacles to overcome.

Leo as lagna:

  • Lagna lord Sun in the 8th: willingly working hard, a karma yogi (Part 15).
  • A big conjunction in the 9th: dharma takes an important place.
  • Jupiter in the 3rd, in Marana Karaka Sthana, as 5th and 8th lord. As 8th lord in MKS that is very good — "any debts that he has can suddenly disappear in one day." As 5th lord and karaka of children: be careful about the children's health.

Entry chart of Leo dasha (Pisces lagna) — antardashas of 5 months:

  • Aries (April–September 2005): the 2nd house; lord Mars exalted in the 11th. Resources, money made and kept. Very good.
  • Taurus (September 2005 – February 2006): the 3rd house; lord Venus exalted in lagna, with afflictions. Nothing stands out. A lot of communication and writing at work.
  • Gemini: lord in lagna, Saturn in the sign. Some discomfort, no important event.
  • Signs whose lord is exalted — Aries, Scorpio, Capricorn — give material gains.
  • Virgo (May–October 2007): Jupiter and Ketu are there, in the 7th house of desire. Jupiter is lagna and 10th lord, Ketu the 9th lord: Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga. Ketu is the Vedas, Jupiter is Vedanta and traditional knowledge. A desire to do good karma in astrology or Vedic knowledge.

"There is no point judging every antardasha this way. Use the technique to identify the years when something important will happen."

Check with the annual chart of that year. "Always corroborate a finding using two techniques."

  • Ruler of the year is Mercury. In the rasi he owns the 6th and 9th and sits in the 2nd with Rahu, the 2nd lord, in own house. Mercury in the 2nd is good for prediction; Rahu makes it intuitive rather than built on solid principles. Rahu or Ketu in the 2nd gives intuitive predictions, and Rahu is very strong here.
  • In the Dasamsa Mercury, lagna and 10th lord, is in the 8th with 11th lord Moon and 8th lord Mars. Lagna lord in the 8th: good hard work on 8th-house matters — occult activity in society.
  • Jupiter and Ketu are in the 7th again, as in the entry chart. "Ketu is Vedic, Jupiter is wisdom."
  • Prediction: in 2007–08 he becomes very active astrologically, makes good predictions and organises events.

Homework: take events from your own life, find the Narayana Dasha, open the entry chart and see whether it makes sense. Bring the ones that do not to the next class.

Marana Karaka Sthana (MKS) — Complete List

Recited while reading the puzzle chart, where the Sun is in the 12th from the progressed lagna.

PlanetMarana Karaka Sthana
Sun12th house
Moon8th house
Mars7th house
Mercury7th house
Jupiter3rd house
Venus6th house
Saturn1st house
Rahu9th house
  • "When Sun is in Marana Karaka Sthana, houses owned by Sun will be destroyed." The rule is applied to any planet.
  • It is counted from whichever lagna is in use: from the progressed lagna (Sun in the 12th from Aries), in a divisional chart (Venus in the 6th of the D-7), from a dasha sign taken as lagna (Jupiter in the 3rd from Leo).
  • A dusthana lord in MKS is good: the 8th lord in MKS makes debts vanish.
  • A planet can also be in MKS from its own house: in the 2005–06 Dasamsa the 6th lord Sun is in the 12th from Leo, so the year is not smooth.

Khara — The 8th Lord's Special Name

  • The 8th lord is called Khara.
  • Exact definition: take the cusp of the 8th house. Born at 2° Virgo, the cusp is 2° Aries. See where that point falls in each divisional chart. The lord of that sign is the Kharesha of that chart.
  • Khara was one of the army commanders of Ravana. The word means mischievous.
  • "The lord of the Kharasthana always gives some shock or the other. That is his agenda."
  • In the puzzle chart's entry chart the combust 10th lord Venus joins Khara — hence a disappointment in the 5th or 10th house.

What the 8th lord wants (from PVNR's own Aquarius antardasha, Part 2): hard work, struggle, no relaxation; sudden and unexpected developments; hidden things. The 8th is a neutral house, not a malefic one. A person already working hard has met his demand.

Image Protection — Planets Relative to Arudha Lagna

Arudha Lagna is "what seems, what people perceive". Status in career is read from Arudha Lagna in the Dasamsa.

Rules Used in This Class

PlacementEffect
Planet in the 9th from ALProtects the image and status
…but if it is the 8th lord from lagnaTends to break the image
Planet in the 12th from ALLoss of image and status. What that planet stands for seems lost
8th lord in ALChanges in image, ups and downs. In a friendly sign the image ends up good
Sun in ALThe image of a king — fine
Saturn in AL"A different matter"

"If any planet is in the 9th from Arudha Lagna, it is unlikely to spoil your image, … unless he happens to be 8th lord."

Lordships Are Not Counted from Arudha Lagna

  • "See the lordships from Lagna only. When you look from Arudha Lagna, just look at the planetary position."
  • (In one place PVNR does name the 9th and 11th lords from Arudha Lagna — the Moon–Venus exchange in the natal D-10.)

Examples

  • Natal D-10: exalted Moon in the 9th from AL — status protected through all of Moon mahadasha.
  • Annual D-10 2004–05: Venus in the 12th from AL — he is seen as having lost his resources and fortune.
  • Annual rasi 2005–06: the Pisces planets are in the 9th from AL — the trouble there does not hurt the image. Mercury, 8th lord from lagna, is the exception.
  • Annual D-10 2005–06: Sun in AL — a good image.
